’50/50′: The Reviews Are In

Most critics think the comedy about cancer proves anything can be funny. By Eric Ditzian Anna Kendrick and Joseph Gordon Levitt in “50/50” Photo: Summit Entertainment When Will Reiser first found out he had cancer, he and his comedy-writer buddies (including Seth Rogen and “Pineapple Express” scribe Evan Goldberg) would jokingly wonder if Reiser’s disease would bring them all a Make-a-Wish opportunity to hang with Led Zeppelin. That rock-and-roll dream never came true, but Reiser’s battle with, and eventual remission from, cancer did gift them all with one thing: “50/50,” a comedy (out now) that is drawing rave reviews from critics and is being discussed as a possible contender come awards season. Though not all reviewers have found it easy to find yuks in a deadly serious topic, far more point to the film as an example that nothing is out of bounds when it comes to art and comedy; handled deftly, anything can lead to laughter and learning. The Story “Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a nice guy with a great job at a Seattle NPR station, a promising relationship with up-and-coming artist Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), a best-friend-since-high-school named Kyle (Seth Rogen) to hang with — and, as he learns to his horror in a doctor’s office, cancer. … Also woven deftly into the mixture is Anna Kendrick as a young (very young) therapist assigned to work with Adam; [Anjelica] Huston as the kind of mother who explains ‘I want you to know that I smothered him because I love him’ to anyone who will listen. … It’s not a perfect movie, but it doesn’t matter. ’50/50′ takes on a bold subject and makes us laugh and cry. I thought I didn’t want to see a cancer comedy; I was wrong.” — Moira McDonald, The Seattle Times The Laughs “Scenes where the pals trash a piece of once-important memorabilia in a backyard rampage and the after-effects of pot-laden cookies scored at the chemotherapy clinic show loopily grinning Gordon-Levitt at his best. Kudos to [director Jonathan] Levine for not letting Rogen’s very funny comedic bits overshadow the proceedings. The actor dials it down ever so slightly and isn’t afraid to be the butt of jokes — watch for Gordon-Levitt’s spot-on Rogen impersonation. The suggestion a bald head and a cancer diagnosis could be the ultimate pickup leverage leads Adam and Kyle into funny territory. But the hilarity turns with the exploration of deeper relationships as Adam finds new friends among the genial stoners of all ages at the chemo clinic.” — Linda Barnard, Toronto Star The Writing “[Reiser] draws on his personal battle with a rare form of that disease. His success rate in the delicate balance between comedy and the profound devastation of such an illness is much greater than 50/50, but the film is not without its tonal lapses. … Reiser has written his characters with an indelible sweetness and vulnerability, which allows the cast to deliver performances with some depth. So a situation such as Kyle insisting that Adam and he should cruise girls at a bar looking for sympathy lays — Cruisin’ with the Big C as it were — comes off as quite funny as does Adam’s first chemo session where he ingests weed-laced sweets created by a fellow patient’s wife and floats out of the hospital afterwards.” — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter The Dissenters “In the pantheon of tastelessness designed to make you laugh at diarrhea, menstruation, masturbation, yeast infections, fellatio and worse, you can now add a stupid horror called ’50/50.’ Artificial, irresponsible, filthy and forgettable, it knocks itself cross-eyed trying to make you roar with laughter at chemotherapy, with the nauseating Seth Rogen milking most of the yuks. But a stoner comedy about cancer? I don’t think so.” — Rex Reed, The New York Observer The Final Word “The reason ’50/50′ works is it’s not trying to force us into any particular emotion. It fits in the emerging category of sad-man comedies such as ‘Up in the Air’ and ‘Crazy, Stupid Love,’ telling its downbeat tale with tenderness, sincerity and warmth. ’50/50′ isn’t a cancer buddy comedy or a male weepie but a message movie. The message is that you can tackle pretty much any subject matter and tell a story any way you want to onscreen as long as it’s absorbing.” — Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune Check out everything we’ve got on “50/50.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Epitome Of Bad Parents: Couple’s Son Dies After They Refused To Give Him Water For Five Days During Texas Heatwave

Another child lost at the hands of the people who should have been keeping him safe. Texas police say a 10-year-old boy died of dehydration after his parents kept water from him for five days as punishment for wetting his bed. Michael Ray James and Tina Alberson are charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury in the July 25 death of their son Johnathan James. Both parents are 42. Jonathan’s twin brother, Joseph James, and a 12-year-old stepbrother weren’t hurt and are staying with relatives. Joseph told The Dallas Morning News that his parents put Jonathan in a room without air conditioning and told him to stand by the window. Temperatures in Dallas hit 100 or more every day but one last month. Police documents show the boy collapsed and hit his head on the floor the night he died. SMDH. Source

5 Reasons Baby Hasn’t Bought That $8 Million Maybach

Excerpt from:

According to Allhiphop.com , Baby “Birdman” Williams has yet to purchase the $8,000,000 Maybach Exelero that he claimed he was buying some time ago.  A representative for the European entrepreneur who owns the car told magazine MotorAuthority that Birdman has yet to pay for the pricey vehicle. Why make such a claim and back down? Here are five reasons we think he’s waiting on the purchase. 5) Feeling The Heat Baby bet some lucky person $2 million that the Miami Heat would defeat the Dallas Mavericks in this year’s NBA Finals. Dirk Nowitzki and company cleaned house on the “Heatles” putting Birdman in the hole for two times a Milli. We imagine he is paying that debt before he purchases an 8 million dollar car. 4) Sloppy Seconds Baby caught up on his DVR’d recordings of “Rap City” from 2005 and realized that Jay-Z already flaunted the car in his video for “Lost Ones.” Even if he paints it red he’ll never get over Jigga man popping the car’s cherry. 3) Law & Order Baby has a history of lawsuits going back to 2003. Whether it’s an unpaid jewelry bill ,  royalties over his Lugz shoes , or producers  lining up for back royalties on Tha Carter III , Birdman stays “lawyered up” and that can’t be cheap. 2) Hedging Bets Baby is planning to bet $10 million on the dream fight between Floyd Mayweather and  Manny Pacquiao. Depending on how he makes out he’ll be able to buy two Exeleros (even though there is only one in exsitence) with his winnings. 1) “Otis” Envy After seeing what Jay-Z and Kanye West did to that Maybach in the video for “Otis,” buying a regular old car just seems so 2010.  Given that NASA just decommissioned the Space Shuttle program,  expect Baby to put in his bid to purchase Atlantis, Endeavor or Discovery with his first Billion. Kirsten Dunst on Her Nude Scenes in Melancholia: "Yes, I Do Have Big Boobs"

Danish director Lars von Trier is known for being an, ahem, rather unpleasant man- he refuses to fly, he psychologically tortures his leading ladies ( Nicole Kidman famously once asked him why he hates women), and recently he was banned from the Cannes Film Festival for saying he “understood” Hitler. But you gotta give the man one thing- he finally got Kirsten Dunst to bare her Kirsten cunst. We reported earlier this year that Dunst makes her full-frontal debut in Von Trier’s latest gloom-and-doom masterpiece, Melancholia – you can even catch a faraway glimpse of her totally nude and lying on a rock in the film’s trailer (seen at left). In advance of Melancholia ‘s stateside debut, Kirsten was interviewed by Elle magazine about her experiences filming the movie. Snatchurally, the subject of nudes came up: One of the surprises about Melancholia is Kirsten’s curvaceous body. She is naked in several scenes and as Von Trier refuses any form of retouching or airbrushing, surely it caused some anxiety? ‘I trusted everyone and the lighting was beautiful. I didn’t work out beforehand, it was all very natural. I don’t have any real body issues. I never really overeat, I shed weight in the summer, put it on in the winter and yes, I do have big boobs. People don’t realize because I cover up a lot, but they are there. Big boobs.’ Oh, we’ve realized for years, Kirsten- ever since that skintillating nip slip of yours in Crazy/Beautiful (2001). In other Von Trier nudes, the director has just announced his next project, the titillatingly titled Nymphomaniac . The movie will depict “the sexual evolution of a woman from birth to age 50″, and the always-tactful Dane has already confirmed that “As a cultural radical I can’t make a film about the sexual evolution of a woman from zero to 50 without showing penetration.” Oh, Lars. You’re a kook, but you’re our kind of kook. Members can see all the breast scenes from Lars von Trier ‘s movies, like Bryce Dallas Howard in Manderlay (2005) and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist (2009)- right here at MrSkin.com!

Jay-Z And Kanye West Shuffle Watch the Throne Tour Dates

‘We pushed it back to really route it and put other dates on there,’ Jay says of pushing launch to October. By Rob Markman Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Fans eager to experience Watch the Throne live are going to have to wait an extra month before they can see Jay-Z and Kanye West in concert. On Tuesday morning, Live Nation started a pre-sale for the WTT Tour, but the original run, which was set to begin on September 22 in Detroit, is no longer. Instead Yeezy and Hov will now kick things off on October 29 in Atlanta, Georgia. The original 24-date tour is now slated for 17 stops, but Live Nation’s website says that more dates will be announced soon. The October 29 Atlanta date was in fact on the original schedule, as was the October 30, Greensboro, North Carolina, date and the November 1 show in Baltimore. The remaining concerts are all rescheduled. Look back at the events leading up to Watch the Throne ‘s August 8 release. There is still no New York City date on paper yet, though Hov confirmed that there will be one during a radio interview with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez on Monday, when he also denied rumors of a feud between him and Kanye . The Throne will stop at the nearby Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, for two nights and will also land in West’s hometown of Chicago on December 1. “That’s an old list we had to push that back, because it was like, we tried to put it out in pre-order and all the lines got jammed,” Jay told Martinez in the interview as she read off the tour’s original dates. “We pushed it back to really route it and put other dates on there. We’ll probably put four New York dates there instead.” Check out exclusive photos of Jay-Z and Kanye West in the studio. As of now, the last date on the schedule is across the northern border on December 18 in Vancouver. In the radio interview, Jay said that he and Kanye hadn’t worked out the performance details and couldn’t confirm who would hit the stage when or how the two would interact. “We hadn’t worked out those details yet but considerable time will be spent onstage together,” he said. Kings Of Leon’s Caleb Followill ‘Just Trying To Get Better’

On Monday band canceled remaining U.S. tour dates, citing frontman’s ‘vocal issues and exhaustion.’ By James Montgomery The Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill Photo: Skip Bolen/ WireImage On the same day his band announced they were canceling the remainder of their U.S. tour due to his “vocal issues and exhaustion,” Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill was in New York, where he told a TMZ cameraman he was focused on healing. “I’m just trying to get better,” Followill said while walking with his wife, model Lily Aldridge . On Monday, the Kings of Leon scrapped their tour in the wake of a disastrous Dallas show during which Followill repeatedly complained about the heat and then abruptly left the stage after announcing to the crowd at the Gexa Energy Pavilion, “I’m gonna go backstage and I’m gonna vomit. I’m gonna drink a beer and I’m gonna come back out and play three more songs.” He never reappeared, leaving his bandmates to apologize to the audience. Following the show, KOL bassist Jared Followill took to Twitter to express his frustrations, writing, “There are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be addressed. I can’t lie, there are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade.” Initially, the band only postponed a Saturday-night show in Houston, but citing Followill’s health, they made the decision to cancel their remaining U.S. shows, saying in a statement, “The band is devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break.” The Kings are scheduled to return to the road at the end of September, with a run of shows in Canada, but when asked about future touring plans by TMZ, Followill would only say, “I don’t know. … We’ll see how it goes.” The TMZ cameraman then asked Followill how he plans to heal his voice, to which he jokingly replied, “[I] try not to do interviews.” Related Artists Kings Of Leon
