Bret Michaels Sues Tonys Over 2009 Onstage Injury

Lawsuit cites the incident as cause of Poison frontman’s near-fatal brain hemorrhage last year. By James Dinh Bret Michaels Photo: Brian Ach/WireImage Bret Michaels is suing Tony Award Productions and CBS for his stage mishap at the 2009 Tony Awards , where the rock singer slammed his head against a stage prop that descended from the ceiling. TMZ reports that the lawsuit, which was filed Friday (March 25), has Michaels alleging that he was not properly instructed on how to exit the stage following his “Nothin’ But a Good Time” performance alongside his Poison bandmates and the cast of the “Rock of Ages” musical. He claims he had to be hospitalized for a broken nose and a cut lip. However, things took a turn for the worse six months later when the rock star nearly died from a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage . And in the lawsuit, Michaels, who is suing for unspecified damages, claims that the onstage injury is in direct relation with his near-fatal hospitalization. “One of the most common causes of this type of hemorrhage is head trauma — exactly like the one Michaels suffered at the hands of the Tony Awards,” the lawsuit claims. “Through his sheer will to live, to see his children grow up, [he] was able to survive this trauma.” Bret says in the suit that producers have “failed and refused” to help aid the situation and claimed that he “missed his mark” during the performance. Reps for Michaels have previously alleged the awards show’s negligence in the incident. In a statement to MTV News days after the mishap, the singer’s reps cited a “lack of communication” between their client and “the producers, directors, stage managers and crew” of the awards show. Oksana Grigorieva to Sue Mel Gibson For All Kinds of Stuff; Probably Vice Versa

Despite Mel Gibson’s no contest plea to battery last week, Oksana Grigorieva plans to file a lawsuit alleging battery, emotional distress and defamation. Sources close to Gibson say he will wage legal war if Oksana does so. Forget settling out of court … it is ON like legal Donkey Kong this time around. The actor will “gladly” file his own lawsuit against the woman he says put a $15 million price on the Mel Gibson tapes in return for keeping quiet. It could be just beginning for Mel and Oksana … Oksana’s lawyer, Daniel Horowitz, said “our position hasn’t changed” regarding Mel’s no contest plea and her plans to sue for myriad damages. This looming lawsuit likely played a huge role in Mel’s no contest plea on misdemeanor battery charges, for which he will serve no jail time. Pleading no contest subjected him to similar sentencing as a plea of guilty, but there was no admission of guilt that will bolster her claims. Basically, he denied her account before, he’s likely to keep denying it now, and Daniel Horowitz and Blair Berk are going to bill a lot of hours. [Photo: Fame Pictures]

Christina Aguilera Hit With Lawsuit

Suit alleges Sony Music paid wrong group to sample song for use in ‘Ain’t No Other Man.’ By Shawn Adler Christina Aguilera Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage Sorrows continue to come as battalions for pop superstar Christina Aguilera who, less than a week after getting arrested for public intoxication, may be back in hot water again due to a federal lawsuit filed against the singer and Sony Music by TufAmerica, according to TMZ.com . The lawsuit, filed in New York, claims Sony paid the wrong distributer for rights to the 1968 song “Hippy Skippy Moon Strut” by Dave Cortez and the Moon People, which Aguilera sampled for her Grammy winning hit “Ain’t No Other Man.” TufAmerica reportedly owns the rights to the song, which Sony arranged to sample through deals with Condigo Mysic and the Clyde Otis Music Group. TufAmerica is seeking to nullify other publishers’ claims to the rights, as well as punitive damages. The lawsuit comes at the tail end of a rough year for the 30-year-old diva, which began with the poor sales of her album Bionic and continued with a canceled U.S. tour , a flop in her big-screen debut “Burlesque” and a divorce from her husband Jordan Bratman . Aguilera’s woes got worse in 2011, with a now infamous flub of the National Anthem during the Super Bowl pre-game show, and an arrest on March 1 for public intoxication . “She was not capable of taking care of herself. … She was incapacitated, not belligerent, but just intoxicated,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department spokesperson Steve Whitmore said of the arrest in a press conference. Aguilera will not be prosecuted for the misdemeanor offence. “Ain’t No Other Man” was the lead single on Aguilera’s third album Back to Basics. For it, Aguilera won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Katie Holmes Sues Tabloid For $50 Million

Katie Holmes is seeking damages of $50 million from American Media, the owner of celebrity gossip tabloid Star, based on a recent cover story. The lawsuit, over a cover extreme even by Star standards, takes issue with reports that Katie is on drugs , and was filed in federal court in L.A. Star’s “vicious lies about plaintiff, designed to hype sales of a sleazy tabloid magazine, were calculated to cause severe harm,” reads the suit . DRUG SHOCKER : The shocker is that they printed this! “The average reader (would invariably) believe that plaintiff has become shockingly addicted to drugs. There is no other way to understand them.” The suit continues: “The cover even created the false impression that, but for plaintiff’s nightmare drug addiction, she would ‘leave’ her husband.” In a statement, AMI said it stood behind the story in Star, which also raised eyebrows for reporting Jason Trawick beat up Britney Spears last year. Inside, the magazine backs off the claim of addiction, citing incidents in which Holmes joins Scientology sessions where an “e-meter” is used. Used in the controversial group’s auditing sessions, e-meters allegedly measure electrical resistance and reflecs past emotional experiences. The article states that the electrical device might release endorphins, or “hormones that cause a pain-killing, mood-elevating effect.” A Scientology member (not Tom Cruise) is quoted as saying about using the e-meter, “Like a heroin addict, you want another dose.” Yup, better get ready to pay up guys.

Ke$ha Sued By Former Managers

DAS Communications’ lawyer claims producer Dr. Luke convinced her to breach contract. By Jocelyn Vena Ke$ha Photo: Fotonoticias/ Getty Images Ke$ha is being sued by her former managers at DAS Communications for upwards of $14 million, Ken Freundlich, who is representing DAS in the case, confirmed to MTV News. “DAS was Ke$ha’s manager since the beginning of 2006, and there was a written agreement, and they worked closely, and sometime in September 2008 [producer] Dr. Luke, for his own personal gain, somehow induced her to breach that contract,” Freundlich said. “And she unceremoniously terminated DAS without justification and then ended up with Luke, basically. So we sued Ke$ha for breach of contract and Luke for interference, and that was last year, and the defense’s reaction was to try and delay us. They made motions. “The judge denied all their motions, and now we’re going forward. We’re going to have our day in court,” he continued. “And we’re going to prove that Dr. Luke induced her to breach the contract. She had no right to do so, and we’re gonna get damages from her.” Freundlich explained how he and his team came to the $14 million sum, explaining, “We don’t know exactly how much, but we assume it’s in that range. She’s been quite successful. The case is set. It’s gonna go on the rest of this year. We’re gonna go straight to the trial if we have to.” Ke$ha has filed a suit in California against the management team, but Freundlich is confident nothing will come of her claim that they acted as an “illegal talent agent.” “That’s pending out in California. Even though that case is still pending, I don’t think it has any merit,” he said. Calls to Ke$ha’s legal team and rep were not returned to MTV News by press time. Related Artists Ke$ha
