REVIEW: First Position May Be Mostly About Ballet, But It’s Also About Being Young

Documentaries don’t have to be technically great to be irresistible, and Bess Kargman’s First Position , which follows six young ballet dancers as they prepare for an elite competition, is a case in point. You may think you can guess what’s going to happen by the end of First Position : Some will win and others won’t, there will be some tears shed, this or that dancer will be sidelined by an injury – and yet somehow, even though nothing hugely surprising happens, the details Kargman captures somehow feel fresh. Maybe that’s because this isn’t just a documentary about ballet and the extraordinary discipline it requires; it’s also about youth and its attendant hopes and risks, spelled out in language that’s painfully universal. Kargman follows her six young dancers on their way to the Youth America Grand Prix, an international dance competition held in New York and judged by a group of professionals including reps from ballet schools around the world: A dancers who does well in the competition might be rewarded with a scholarship, or even a slot in a ballet company. This competition is serious business for these kids, all of whom hope to make some sort of life for themselves by dancing. Eleven-year-old Aran Bell, an American who comes from a military family, is an elfin presence who introduces himself to Kargman’s camera, and to us, by trying to articulate what he loves about ballet: “I just love it so much. I can’t explain it.” He shows us around his home, where he demonstrates various torture implements used for stretching muscles. He also picks up a BB gun, wisely noting that it’s probably better not to shoot it – a reminder that this exquisite dancer is still, at heart, just a boy. We also meet Rebecca Houseknecht, a middle-American teen who loves the color pink and whose high-school friends have nicknamed her Barbie, partly because of her ultra-shiny blonde hair and partly because of her mad flexibility. Then there’s the charming and understated Joan Sebastion Zamora, from Colombia, who hopes to do well in ballet so he can improve the lives of his family members back home, a risky proposition if ever there was one. Miko and Jules Fogarty, brother and sister, strive to do well under the watchful – possibly too watchful – eye of their mother. Most affecting of all is Michaela, a teenager who, as a child, was orphaned during the civil war in Sierra Leone. She and another girl were adopted by an American couple, and when Michaela explains how awestruck and grateful she is to have come so far in ballet, there’s no doubt about how much she means it. (We also see her mother, a white woman in her 60s, bent over a pot on the family’s kitchen stove as she dyes some stretch tulle for one of her daughter’s costumes. It’s sold as “flesh-toned,” she explains, but that means it’s flesh-toned for white people, requiring a bath in brown dye to match the color of her daughter’s skin.) Kargman shoots the dancers simply but carefully as they rehearse and, ultimately, perform: There’s no fancy camera work or editing here, thank God. Her camera takes pleasure in their movement, and also tracks the occasional flicker of pain. (Michaela is forced to rehearse and dance despite having suffered an injury, lest she lose her shot at a scholarship or a job – her future hinges on this competition.) This is Kargman’s debut feature, and she’s adept at telling interlocking stories without getting sidetracked by unnecessary minutiae; the picture is as smooth as an expert, seemingly effortless plié. There’s a great deal of joy in it, too. Kargman doesn’t make what these kids do seem easy, not by a long shot. But she does manage to capture, without words, the essence of why they’re driven to, as one of the dancers puts it, force their bodies to do all kinds of things they weren’t meant to do. As Joan performs in the movie’s finale, his movements are so fluid his muscles could almost be liquid, though we can clearly see how solid and defined they are. And Aran’s spritely routine, exuberant but disciplined, places him right at the magical midpoint between childhood and young adulthood. What drives these dancers to work so hard at creating beauty for our pleasure and delight? The answer is written on their faces and in their muscles; words would be useless in explaining it. Random Ridiculousness: Ohio Deputy Gets Fired For Ordering Inmates To Dance To Usher’s “Yeah”

Ohio Deputy Gets Fired For Ordering Inmates To Dance To Usher’s “Yeah” SMH at the inmates doing the worm and the robot to use the phone: Some inmates did the worm, others chose the old school robot. Each dance was performed to the beat of hip-hop artist Usher on command from a now-fired Summit County deputy. The inmate prize: use of a jail microwave. The charges are revealed in an internal affairs report released Wednesday. Deputy Dominic Martucci, 35, was fired for violating the department’s policies, including a mandate that inmates be treated humanely. Martucci is accused of ordering five inmates dance to Usher’s Yeah! song and then inviting other deputies to watch during an early evening shift on April 11. The inmates danced their way to regaining use of a microwave that they had lost earlier that day. Another inmate won the right to use the phone and commissary items for his old-school robot dance routine. Martucci blared the music from a smartphone, the report said. “I did what I had to do so I could use the phone,” the inmate told investigators. A family member had died and he needed to contact relatives, he said. At one point, Martucci signaled a fellow deputy to watch the dance. “Stop and watch this, it’s going to be funny,” he said, according to the report. One inmate said as many as five deputies looked on during the dance. They were also looking to make sure a supervisor was not nearby, investigators said. The inmate said some dancers were rewarded with commissary items, but not him. The inmate was told he “messed up” and faced a trip to the hole. The inmate alleged Martucci demanded he dance “one minute to my liking.” The inmate was eventually let out of lock down, the report shows. The allegations came out through an inmate’s memo to a sergeant sent days later. “[Martucci] told the inmates that if they wanted out of lock up and the microwave back, that they would have to dance for him,” an internal affair report noted. “He let out the [five inmates] and told them to entertain him by dancing…” Martucci was suspended April 23. This week, Sheriff Drew Alexander fired the deputy on departmental charges of mistreating the inmates, misconduct and having a cell phone in the jail. In his defense, Martucci told investigators he forced the inmates to dance in order to regain day room privileges lost earlier in the shift. The inmates did not touch each other. During the internal investigation, investigators said Martucci admitted his actions were wrong, but that he intended only to “lighten the tension” in the jail pod. Another deputy who saw the dancing said the inmates were laughing during the song. SMH. Do you think he deserved to get fired? Source More On Bossip! Kate Upton Does "Cat Daddy" Dance in Bikini, 50 Million Males Lose Concentration at Work

Sports Illustrated cover girl Kate Upton is busting out (her moves) to a new dance, called the Cat Daddy, and Terry Richardson filmed her demonstrating it. We have no idea what inspired this … though it’s pretty obvious. Richardson, a noted fashion photographer perhaps best known for his many provocative Lindsay Lohan photos , may have set the bar too high here. After all, how can you ever top this … at least if you’re a guy? Kate Upton “Cat Daddy” Dance Kate Upton isn’t opposed to showing off her dance moves online, having done the “Dougie” in a similar video back when that was big. Like eight months ago.

Rihanna Searches For Love In ‘Where Have You Been’ Video

Singer goes tribal and gets her dance on in trippy new Talk That Talk video. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna in her “Where Have You Been” music video Photo: Island/Def Jam Rihanna ‘s wondering “Where Have You Been” in the just-released music video for the Talk That Talk single. Her search takes her to mucky rivers, flower-drenched hillsides, desert-scapes and smoke-filled dance parties, overflowing with dancers popping and locking in tribal couture alongside the sexy pop vixen. The video, which she dropped on her Facebook page , opens with Rihanna emerging from a river, scantily clad and as lonely-looking as hinted at in the track’s lyrics. “Where have you been all my life?” she sings while performing more intense choreography than fans of the singer might be used to. She shimmies and shakes in an exotic desert-like setting, wondering where her one true love might be hiding. The video serves as a kind of photo shoot for a tribal-print-themed spread in a fashion magazine, with Ri donning funky looks that feature lots of animal prints, chunky jewelry and headdresses. It’s sexy and full of longing, much like the song itself, and even includes the singer appearing topless in certain shots. And if a topless Rihanna can’t find love, what hope is there for the rest of humanity? As the Calvin Harris-produced track grinds on in all its EDM glory, Rihanna continues her trek throughout the world, looking for that special guy, who seems to slip through her fingers at every turn. Rihanna looks fiercely into the camera, shimmying to the song’s bumping beat, with her siren call being blasted into the wilds of the world. The video turns psychedelic as it nears its end and a kaleidoscope effect is filtered over the clip, with glitter-sprinkled Rihanna making one final plea. Several dance breaks, wardrobe changes and hairstyles later, Rihanna looks as if she still might have to live her life all by her lonesome. At the video’s end, she goes back underwater, with just her dancers to keep her company. Don’t forget to watch Rihanna on MTV tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET to watch the premiere of an exclusive “Battleship” clip, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A with the film’s stars on MTV.com, hosted by MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or via Twitter using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBattleship. Related Artists Rihanna

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga’s biggest hits come out to play. By John Mitchell Lady Gaga arrives in Seoul on April 20 Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga kicked off her hotly awaited Born This Way Ball at Seoul, South Korea’s Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite protests from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was “obscene” and could “taint” young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident. Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the BTW Ball’s enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle. While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to elevate the age rating for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga’s tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show — which at the time was still in rehearsals and has not been reviewed publicly — was considered unsuitable for children under 18. The likely catalyst for the board’s decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group covered Seoul with posters accusing Gaga of “spreading unhealthy sexual culture” through “lewd lyrics and performances.” The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she tweeted her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn’t), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga’s most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert. Before the show, Gaga tweeted , “I can you hear you Korea. I’m shaking.” Gaga’s performance was heavy on material from her Born this Way album, though her biggest hits, including “Bad Romance,” Poker Face” and “Just Dance,” were represented. Rosa Acosta Does A Little Cake Shaking For “Entourage” Promo Shot By Director X [Video]

The rhythm is gonna get ya… Rosa Acosta Dances In New “Entourage” Commercial Shot By Director X If you’ve missed Rosa’s moves, they show up in a brand new commercial for “Entourage” which is heading to the Spike network very soon. In honor of the move Director X was recruited to film a brand new promo. Check out her very special two step in the “Entourage” car: While the video is plenty (of a$$) on it’s own — King Magazine tracked down Director X to talk with him about the project. Check out some excerpts from their interview below: KING: Tell us how this “Independent Project” come about? DIRECTOR X: It’s just something we did. That’s actually the Entourage car from [the show’s opening sequence]. So, we’re shooting the commercial, and we have Rosa do a dance in the car. But Rosa is pretty talented. So, she goes and choreographs something in her head. That’s what I mean: she’s a next level type of girl. And she does this. It’s only two takes, something we shot at the end of the day. When I was in the edit I realized this is gold, it’s so good I had to do something else with it. So I had Snoop’s CD, grabbed [”Luv Drunk” featuring The-Dream”], I put the two together, it looked like that’s what she was dancing to, and boom: we got the independent project. So is Rosa the star of the video or is the car the star? C’mon, Rosa. It’s nice that the car is from Entourage, it’s f***ing amazing that Rosa is doing what she’s doing on it. But this was from her actual sequence in the commercial, right? Oh yeah, you see a clip [of this dance] in the Spike commercial. The concept of the commercial is these girls rapping about the fact that they were once in Entourage. The commercial has all kinds of crazy stuff, Gary Busey’s in there…it’s just kind of insane. [Rosa’s] platform was to dance in the car. And normally when you tell a girl that, they just freestyle it away. But she actually planned something out. I haven’t seen any girls do anything like that. So is this the beginning of something bigger? Or is this a one-and-done type of deal? One and done. I didn’t plan to do it, but I did it. The world deserves to see all that footage, so there you go. You’ve set more than a few trends in the Hip-Hop video world. Do you see someone dropping a video of a girl in a car anytime soon? Let’s see what happens and how people respond to it when we put this out. We all know what Snoop and Dream look like. Would it have been better if we saw [them] in there rapping and singing at some point? I don’t think so. I think it’s perfect with just two shots of Rosa on a car. One wide, one medium, and she dances and there you go. Now that the social awareness of hip-hop has broadened, do you see people doing more artistic, conceptual videos instead of the norm? I don’t know, man. People are kinda stuck in their ways, so I’d be surprised to see a really big shift. But things like this show you…you can make something engaging. But you have to have Rosa Acosta. You need a girl of that talent. It’s not just a hot girl shaking her a$$. For more on X’s thoughts on his “HYFR” video visit KING So what did you think about about the video? We’re interested to see how Gary Busey fits into this one. More On Bossip! ‘Dancing With The Stars’: Katherine Jenkins Hits High Note Again

Gladys Knight earned the lowest scores on Motown night, while Jaleel White and Jenkins each earned a pair of 10s. By Kelley L. Carter Derek Hough and Maria Menounos Photo: ABC Monday night’s telecast of “Dancing With the Stars” opened with R&B legend Smokey Robinson crooning his Motown hit “Tears of a Clown.” Then Martha Reeves came in singing her hit with the Vandellas “Dancing in the Streets.” Then came the (current lineup of the) Temptations singing their classic hit “Get Ready.” And Motown founder Berry Gordy was in the audience, to boot. It was the perfect way to intro Motown night — this week’s theme — for the popular ABC dance reality competition. This week’s scores included bonus points for a group cha-cha dance marathon. At the top of the pack this week were Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas. The opera singer once again impressed judges with her moves. She and Ballas danced to the Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next to You,” and the judges thought she continued to deliver. Her prize? She earned a pair of 10s in her initial score for an almost perfect score. “Tonight, girlfriend, you let it loose. That was amazing!” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. 29/30 + 10 = 39. Here’s how the others fared: Jaleel White and Kym Johnson The former child actor jumped right back near the top of the leaderboard. He danced the cha-cha to “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” and the judges found his movements to be sharp and filled with attitude “You’re back!” head judge Len Goodman told him. He also was rewarded with a pair of 10s from the judges. 29/30 + 8 = 37 William Levy and Cheryl Burke The Latin soap opera star danced the rumba, and judges loved the steam that came from the pair. Their ending was over-the-top sexual (they were laid out on top of one another on the dance floor), and the judges — and the live audience, gauging from the screams and hooting and hollering — enjoyed it thoroughly. “William! Absolute and utter filth. And I loved every minute of it!” judge Bruno Tonioli said. “On behalf of all of the women out there, I thank you,” Inaba said. Goodman thought it was a bit on the raunchy side. 27/30 + 9 = 36 Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd The football star danced the foxtrot to a Temptations track, and the judges were impressed by his showmanship. “Donald, you are a showman! Confidence! Power! Your performances get better and better. You should be in the theater,” Tonioli said. 27/30 + 7 = 34 Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy The actress danced the Viennese waltz to Robinson’s lush hit “Ooo Baby, Baby,” and judges thought her lines were beautiful. “I see poetry starting to happen in your movements. I see the artistry there,” Inaba told her. 24/30 + 6= 30. Maria Menounos and Derek Hough The TV journalist danced the foxtrot to a Reeves’ hit, and even though she made a few missteps, judges thought she pulled it off quite nicely. “You lost your footing, but you caught up quite brilliantly,” Tonioli told her. 26/30 + 4 = 30. Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower The Disney star danced to a Robinson hit, and the judges thought his moves were more suitable for a hip-hop dance — his specialty — than the ballroom. Goodman said that the execution of his routine was “clipped and jerky.” “In general, I thought your moments were a bit over-exaggerated tonight and it made it hard for me to watch,” Inaba said. 23/50 + 5= 28. Gladys Knight and Tristan McManus The soul legend took the stage first — kind of fitting, considering she recorded with the Detroit label — and she performed the rumba. Judges thought her routine was passionate and said her star quality was undeniable. They thought her rumba should have been a bit steamier and noted how she lost it a bit at the end. “You’re not the best dancer, but I’ll tell you what you are … Gladys, you are the most charismatic dancer, I’m telling you. It is so appealing,” head judge Len Goodman said. “It’s just easy like Sunday morning!” 21/30 + 3 = 24.

Ashley Tisdale Thinks She is Fabulous of the Day

I wonder if this is one of those self encouraging moments….you know, positive affirmations to encourage change….If she wears a shirt that reads “Fabulous” she’ll feel fabulous…and hopefully this brainwashing will not only work on herself but also on the onlookers in effort switch our negative view on her….especially her face….because being a second rate Vanessa Hudgens, even though she has a hotter body, is less hairy, tries harder, hasn’t got a nude scandal and they started off and got famous on the same show…..is starting to get her down….down enough to use her titties to generate even more buzz to her “fabulous”…watching the trials, tribulations and struggles of underserving cunts is always funny.

Closed Captioned Rihanna Dancing in Leggings of the Day

I don’t give a fuck about Riahnna and her tribal jigaboo dance moves… I don’t even care about her doing the dance in leggings…because she’s a whore and should be in a thong or naked…with labia flapping in all directions….a memory of the damage she did to herself by prostituting at the age of 14 to tourists back home even if that prostituting got her where she is today….. What I care about is that they subtitled her – even though she’s speaking english….like America has got to the point of stupid where they can’t understand the guys on Swamp People….or even Caribbeans….it’s almost offensive to her uneducated ass…but more importantly…a terstament to our uncultured retard nation….or maybe it isn’t our nation but Rihanna and her uneducated whore ass….that we should just watch gyrate instead of listening to her talk about it….focus on her skills yo. On a sidenote…. She wore a garter belt to dinner….and I approve…. (click the pic to see more) On another sidenote Here are her tits for instagram – no wonder they sold for a billion dollars….
