Post-Peeta, the actor has a horror/comedy film and ‘Red Dawn’ on the horizon. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Those of you who’ve seen “The Hunger Games” will more than likely agree with our sentiment that there are a number of things to love about the weekend’s box-office dominator . The film’s success is first and foremost due to author Suzanne Collins’ brilliance, followed by director Gary Ross’ sleek and stylish take on the adaptation and, of course, the performances of the very talented cast. One of those standout performances is Josh Hutcherson’s portrayal of loyal and lovable boy with the bread Peeta Mellark. He’s so good in the film we just can’t wait to see what he does with the character’s arc in “Catching Fire.” Unfortunately, we have to wait about 20 months until that happens, so in the meantime, here’s a look at where and when you can see more of Hutcherson’s work on the big screen. First up is the R-rated teen horror/comedy film “Detention,” which hits select theaters April 13. In the uniquely twisted and slightly outrageous film, Hutcherson plays Clapton Davis, a student of Grizzly Lake High School just trying to make it through the school year when slasher-movie killer Cinderhella descends on the school and goes on a killing spree. “Detention” played at last year’s South by Southwest film festival and received many surprised-but-delighted reactions . It also stars Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell and Spencer Locke. After watching a different side of Hutcherson’s skills in “Detention,” look for the coming-of-age drama “Carmel,” in which Hutcherson plays an artistically gifted teenager who is abandoned by his drug-addicted mother and ends up in the small seaside town of Carmel, California, where he is introduced to the art-forgery community. Hayden Panettiere and Alfred Molina also star. According to the film’s Facebook page, the release date for the film will be sometime in June, to be timed with the DVD/Blu-ray releases of “Hunger Games” and “Journey 2.” In November, we’ll get to see more of Hutcherson’s action-movie skills in the remake of the 1984 film “Red Dawn,” the release of which has been long-delayed due to the studio’s financial troubles. The story revolves around a group of teenagers who resist the occupation/invasion of a foreign army in their town. Hutcherson stars alongside Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki and Isabel Lucas. After “Red Dawn” comes out, we very likely won’t see Hutcherson on the big screen again until next year, when “Catching Fire” is released November 22, 2013. ‘We liked what we’re doing in this current time and space,’ producer William Orbit tells MTV News about working with the Queen of Pop. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Courtesy of Interscope When Madonna hit the studio with longtime pal William Orbit to work on MDNA , in between brainstorming and recording sessions for the tracks, the twosome also shared many laughs. And in the lull of long recording sessions, they zeroed in on fun, instead of deconstructing the current musical landscape. When Orbit spoke to MTV News about making the album, he insisted that despite the flurry of pop music floating around these days, they didn’t give much thought to the music on Top 40 radio. Instead, they focused on their own music and the bubble of creativity they were living in. “We never played tracks by everybody else, all the current artists. It’s a dangerous road to go down,” he said. “It doesn’t work,” he explained, because those songs are good for their own reasons, so it’s futile to find out why they were good and how that can be replicated. “We liked what we’re doing in this current time and space,” he continued. “What we tended to do was watch old French films from the ’60s or listen to music that was so far away that it wasn’t, in any way, relevant.” However, there was one person who managed to squeeze into their bubble and give them a good laugh: “I did remember, one day, there was a moment when we were waiting for Pro Tools to reboot, or something like that, and we were just looking at links on YouTube,” he recalled. “And I was showing her Kreayshawn , and I’ve been working with her, and I really like her. And she’s obviously got this track out called ‘Hoes on My Di–‘ [with the line] ” ’cause I look like Madonna.’ And, I played it for Madonna … then she was saying afterwards ‘Hoes on my di–, ’cause I am Madonna.’ That was about the only time we looked at any serious contemporary pop music.” At the end of the day, with the dance parties and Kreayshawn sing-alongs long over, Orbit insists the team couldn’t be more pleased with the way MDNA turned out. He added, “It was a good adventure, and we pulled it off.”
Critics praise the album for its ‘pumping pop tunes’ and being Madge’s ‘most personal effort to date.’ By John Mitchell Madonna’s M.D.N.A. Photo: Interscope Madonna ‘s MDNA drops officially on Monday — though it leaked online earlier this week — and many critics are calling the set a return to form for the Queen of Pop. ” MDNA — her 12th studio album — is a collection of thoroughly pumping pop tunes, some of which are slices of sheer brilliance. Not only does Madonna take us to the club with MDNA, she exhausts us, drains us, and confides in us,” Billboard writes in its track-by-track review. “Five minutes after an aerobic workout on the dance floor, we’re in her private booth, where she’s spilling her guts about relationships and how things just didn’t turn out the way they planned.” Slant magazine calls the album “surprisingly cohesive” given the seven different producers who worked on the project, but has particular praise for the tracks produced and written by Madonna and her Ray of Light collaborator William Orbit. “It’s obvious Madge and Billy Bubbles [Orbit] can still create magic together,” the magazine writes. “Songs like ‘Gang Bang’ serve as reminders that what separates Madonna from most other mainstream pop stars is her willingness to try new things,” Slant continues. “Fear — of failure, of looking uncool, of death — can either paralyze or propel you. MDNA finds Madonna continuing to defy the laws of nature by doing both.” In an otherwise middling review, Entertainment Weekly praises Madge’s vocal performance on the album’s love songs, which are parsed out between darker tracks that seem to focus heavily on Madonna’s divorce from Guy Ritchie . EW gives particular props to the Golden Globe-winning Orbit track “Masterpiece” and the “synth stomper” “I’m Addicted,” which it says is “a warm ode to a crush [and] offers a good excuse to join in when she says, ‘I need to dance.’ ” Many critics compliment Madonna’s decision to be so emotionally revealing. She’s gotten personal in the past, of course, but on MDNA, she takes it to the next level. “There’s something remarkable about Madonna’s decision to share her suffering the way she once shared her pleasure,” Rolling Stone writes. “Her music has always been about liberation from oppression, but for the first time the oppression is internal: loss and sadness.” The Poughkeepsie Journal sees that as a natural extension of the best Madonna songs. “Yet in some of her most beguiling songs, Madonna has opened her heart and let her defenses down a bit,” the Journal opines. “Think of the pregnant teenager in ‘Papa Don’t Preach,’ begging for support even as she declares her resolve. Or the giddy lover pledging eternal devotion in ‘Cherish.’ Then imagine that those gals had lived a few more years, maybe married and divorced, and you’ll have an inkling of the emotional wallop waiting in Madonna’s most personal effort to date, MDNA. ” More than anything though, critics seem to be assuring fans that they can breathe a sigh of relief on two fronts: Not only is the album good, it is 100 percent Madonna and no one else. “There’s no denying MDNA delivers thrills. In true Ciccone fashion, club pop pounders like ‘Some Girls,’ ‘Love Spent’ and ‘Turn Up the Radio’ seem to push a bit harder than the competition — that last one’s got a drop like an open manhole,” the BBC writes. ” MDNA also has something the last two Madge albums lacked: ballads, both of which are quite lovely. … Best of all, several moments prompt a welcome sigh: ‘God, only Madonna.’ ” Related Photos Five Key Moments In Madonna’s ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ Music Video Related Artists Madonna

MTV News takes a look at why Madge’s upcoming album is a drug worth taking. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna wants us to dance the heartbreak away on MDNA. The record, set to drop on March 26, has some of the finest musical moments we’ve heard from the pop legend in the last few years, recalling the finer songs and themes she explored on Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor. It’s clear that Madge had her heart broken, most likely by her former hubby and British auteur, Guy Ritchie. She explores the pain of life post-divorce on many of the songs on the album, and most of the time, it works perfectly. Madonna really understands heartbreak and she understands even better how it can empower someone to be a better person. While all the buzz seems to be about “I Don’t Give A” and the bit too on-the-nose confessions she makes about her divorce (where she even sings about falling off a horse), her anger is even darker on the William Orbit-produced “Gang Bang.” Sparse at times and always punctuated by a pulsing beat, it’s incredibly hard. It’s the type of record you’d expect to hear at some after-hours club that your really edgy friend knows about. It’s about falling completely in love and falling more deeply into hate when it’s over. Serving as a pop-song revenge fantasy, Madonna sings, “And I’m going straight to hell/ And I’ve got a lot of friends there/ And if I see that b—- in Hell/ I’m gonna shoot him in the head again/ Cause I wanna see him die/ Over and over and over.” On the disco-tinged “Love Spent,” Madge sings about feeling like nothing more than a bank to a former lover (she did have one very costly breakup from Ritchie), and on the remorseful, melodic “Best Friend,” she admits, “Your picture’s off the wall, but I’m still waiting for your call/ And every man that walks through the door/ Will be compared to you.” “Superstar” is light and airy, recalling some of the singer’s highlights from the ’80s. The mid-tempo’s production, which comes courtesy of Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza, certainly helps distract from some of the sillier lyrics that have Madonna comparing her boy toy to famed dudes like Al Capone and James Dean. If anyone was wondering why she called the album MDNA, all they need to do is look to “I’m Addicted,” the super club-thumping track full of bleeping noises, spare moments and then big chugging ones, which are filled out with loopy instances. It’s about letting go and loving someone completely: “Now that your name/ Pumps like blood in my veins/ Pulsing through my body, lighting my mind/ It’s like MDNA and that’s OK.” MDNA, of course, is also known as ecstasy, giving the track the perfect metaphor for love on the dance floor. While most of the album addresses the highs and lows of falling in love, “Some Girls” is all about Madonna proclaiming her awesomeness. Another Orbit jam, it’s a crunchy, robotic, thumping anthem that puts Madonna right in the center of female empowerment. “I’m not like the rest,” she proclaims, as if anyone would ever question that. “Some girls are second best.” On the chorus, she declares, “Some girls are not like me/ I’m everything you’ve ever dreamed of/ I got you begging please.” One of the highlights is “Turn Up the Radio,” which sounds like it was born to be this summer’s feel-good anthem. It’s bright, happy and fun, all about letting go of the past. Over Martin Solveig’s sunny production, Madge sings, “It was time I opened my eyes/ I’m leaving the past behind/ Nothing’s ever what it seems/ Including this time and this crazy dream.” She’s not wrong to be that confident on this album. She’s certainly in the groove. And the album is full of strength, but it’s also her vulnerability that rounds it out. If fans thought link type=”content” id=”1678478″> “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” and “Girl Gone Wild” are what this era is all about, they are only seeing pieces of the MDNA puzzle, that’s only completed when listening to the album from front to back. In the end, this album is a drug worth taking. Are you counting down the days to the release of MDNA ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Madonna
