Katy Perry Talks Grammy Performance, Tour

Singer says her Grammy appearance will ‘show a different side.’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic This is shaping up to be another big year for Katy Perry. She’s gearing up to release a new single, possibly “E.T.,” her dance ode to loving an alien, and she’s also set to perform at the Grammy Awards next month. “I’m going to do something beyond that,” Perry tells Zap2it about the performance, for which she’ll be pulling from hits like “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “California Gurls” and maybe even including a surprise or two. “I’m going to do a really cool, heartfelt song that I really love, and show a different side. I think I’ll do a medley of sorts, too, but not too much. It’ll be quite a surprise.” On February 20, just days after the February 13 Grammy broadcast, Perry will be kicking off her California Dreams Tour in Portugal, and she admits she’s working hard to get herself together for it. “It’s like training for the Olympics,” she said. “I’m off to the gym to build stamina … and I hate working out, but I have to go, because this is a really energetic show. It’s not like I’m going to make my fortune off of touring; I’m basically doing this as a big I.O.U. for all the love and support I’ve gotten. I need to go shake some hands and kiss some people.” Perry will bring the tour to the States in June, and she’s been tweeting all about her plans for the show. “[Opening act] @robynkonichiwa [Robyn] and I will be dancing up a storm watching your set! Can’t wait, BTE!… best tour ever!” she wrote . “I feel like this tour is building a bridge between the hipsters & the popsters. Hip-Pop is so 2011. Get wit it. #californiadreamstour!” Related Photos 2011 Grammy Performers Related Artists Katy Perry

‘Amercian Idol’ Exec Says ‘Legend’ Steven Tyler Will Be Good TV

‘You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in,’ Nigel Lythgoe tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Nigel Lythgoe Photo: MTV News One thing that fans of “American Idol” can count on each season is a level of unpredictability, particularly once the show narrows the contestants down to 20 and the performance rounds and weekly eliminations begin. This season has upped the unpredictability factor in the form of new and potentially wayward, wacky judge Steven Tyler. When MTV News caught up with the reality show’s returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe , we asked if he was worried about having to censor the Aerosmith frontman. “Oh yes, [I have] every worry about that,” Lythgoe readily admitted about Tyler’s sometimes-potty mouth. “But we’re on a delay, and he’s already done it. And then he forgets that he’s not allowed to say it, so he’ll say, ‘F—! Did I say f—? Oh f—. Sorry mate.’ ” Lythgoe — who also appears as a judge on Fox’s other reality talent show, “So You Think You Can Dance”— has said that a large part of Tyler’s appeal is not being able to predict what he’ll say or do. “He has come through that whole rock and roll circus,” said Lythgoe of Tyler , whom he also hopes will perform on the show, along with judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, at some point. “Why wouldn’t you want a legend there? You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in.” As for 62-year-old rock icon Tyler , he seemed genuinely excited about the entire process but with one concern as the show prepares for its season 10 kickoff. “The part that’s a little difficult is judging young kids,” he said this week. “It took me a couple minutes to get into the role of that, but I’ve grown accustomed to it and it’s fun and I get to sit next to J.Lo and Randy taking [the] you-know-what out of everybody.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Jennifer Lopez’s ‘American Idol’ Past: A Look Back

J.Lo first surfaced on season six as a mentor, drawing on her dance roots to motivate ‘Idol’ wannabes. By Eric Ditzian “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Who could have predicted that when Jennifer Lopez appeared on “American Idol” in 2007 and pronounced her love for the infamous Sanjaya Malakar that the diva-turned-guest mentor would one day return to the reality competition? But return she has, this time as a judge. As we prepare for her debut Wednesday night (January 19), alongside Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler , we’re taking a look back at J.Lo’s season-six “Idol” appearance, looking for clues as to how she’ll handle the tricky task of being both entertaining and instructive in the course of a seconds-long sound bite. Lopez stepped into “Idol” world for Latin night, when there were eight contestants still vying for the crown. What shines through most during her rehearsals with the singers is her desire to be supportive. When Haley Scarnato struggled to inject some passion into her performance, Lopez invited beat-boxing impresario Blake Lewis into the room to provide some energy. And instead of slamming Phil Stacey for butchering Santana’s “Maria Maria,” she urged him to imagine singing to someone as a way to connect with the emotional core of the tune. “The songs have to mean something,” Lopez explained. “They have to come from somewhere. Otherwise you just leave people feeling vacant.” That’s a key insight, even if it’s a bit obvious, and it’ll bear repeating again and again as the new contestants move onto increasingly bigger stages as the competition progresses. But it’s not just compassion and assistance with vocals that Lopez provided to the season-six crew. She also drew on her years as a dancer to help with the contestants’ theatricality. “Ride the rhythm,” she told LaKisha Jones as the two shimmied side by side. J.Lo also hoped that eventual winner Jordin Sparks would infuse her performances with more hip-shaking mojo, saying, “Let the rhythm in her body just move her a little bit.” Mentoring contestants for one day, of course, is a very different task than judging them for an entire season. It remains to be seen if Lopez will channel her ’07 performance during the new season, or whether she’ll seek to stake out new territory or fill in perceived personality gaps left by the departures of Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi. What is clear is that even before she became an official “Idol” employee, she understood what separates the also-rans and wannabes from the singers who make it to the very end. “When [viewers] watch you guys every night, they’re like, ‘Who’s going to give me goosebumps?,’ ” she told the final-eight. “It doesn’t necessarily mean the one who hits the highest note. It’s the one who makes them feel good.” How do you think J.Lo will do on “Idol”? Tell us in the comments! Afrojack Talks His Part In Chris Brown’s ‘Look At Me Now’

Dutch dance producer tells MTV News how he contributed to C. Breezy’s Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Diplo collabo. By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack in an MTV News Skype interview Photo: MTV News Afrojack already had reason to celebrate as he headed into the New Year. The Dutch dance-music producer’s pop-dance single “Take Over Control,” featuring singer Eva Simons, made the top 25 on Billboard ‘s Dance/Club Play Songs chart in December. And now his second U.S. release, packed with hip-hop heavy-hitters, seems primed for chart success. MTV News caught up with the EDM producer (born Nick van de Wall) for a skype chat last week, and he talked about his contribution to Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” the latest offering from the singer’s upcoming F.A.M.E. album. The track is a fast-rapping flurry of awesome self-indulgence courtesy of Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Chris, with an eerie downtempo beat cooked up by chefs Afrojack and Diplo. The pair of producers previously collaborated on “Pon De floor,” off Diplo’s Major Lazer full-length release, and according to Afrojack, “Look at Me Now” is the product of a beat he’d passed along to the Philadelphia beatsmith. “Yeah, Diplo called me,” Afrojack recalled. “He was like, ‘We are in the studio right now, and we are gonna do a track on the beat.’ And I was like, ‘OK, whatever. Have fun.’ ” Eventually, “Look at Me Now,” was born. While Afrojack sounded casual about the song’s evolution, he said he’s certainly pleased with the finished product. “I just love these kind of people on a track like this,” he said. “It’s like hip-hop, but really weird kind of hip-hop. “Busta’s verse on it is really sick,” he continued. “It’s like I can’t even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [ mimics Busta’s rapid flow ], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even try. But it was really, really cool.” So what’s next for Afrojack? Apart from working on a remix for Pitbull , he premiered a new single exclusively for MTV News that we will be sharing with you very soon. All you Afrojack fans stay tuned! Lady Gaga Gets ‘Bigger And Bigger’ On Born This Way, RedOne Says

‘She’s growing all the time, from the day I met her,’ producer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s only a matter of weeks until Lady Gaga releases the first single from her highly anticipated album Born This Way, due in May . Producer RedOne recently chatted with MTV News about their latest collaboration, saying it shows the next step in the evolution of the girl formerly known as Stefani Germanotta. “She’s growing all the time, from the day I met her,” RedOne said. “Of course, she’s an encyclopedia of music. She listened to all the Bruce Springsteens, all the legends, and she has music in her. But on her personal level, she’s always growing and growing and growing and becoming bigger and bigger, and her vision’s the same thing. She just needed this platform to put all her ideas and learning from what she’s been doing [into one place], and she’s doing her thing.” With work on the album close to complete, this is a very exciting time for Gaga and him. “It feels exciting. It feels very exciting,” he said with a smile on his face. “It’s really exciting, and I hope the world is going to enjoy this as much as we do.” RedOne also dished about the album’s forthcoming single . “It’s so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world,” he said. “Honestly, the only thing we do is we get into the studio and suddenly magic happens. We never overthink, or we just do what we do. That’s how it all started. With ‘Just Dance,’ we did it in one hour. There was no overthinking. Even though I remember when we did ‘Poker Face,’ people said musically it brought something new to the music and you won’t be able to top it, we went into the studio and we did ‘Bad Romance’ on a bus. “That explains how we do it, so I can’t tell you anything about what’s coming, but that’s what we do. We just get in and do music we love and feel it, and thank God it comes out good.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s new music? Let us know in the comments!

Steven Tyler: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

As Aerosmith frontman kicks off TV gig, we look back on the rocker’s decades-long highs and lows as part of iconic band. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Steven Tyler has seen it all. The famously loud and proud singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Aerosmith has experienced the highest highs of the music business, as well as the deepest depths of career (and personal) misery. In other words, he’s perfectly qualified to be a judge on “American Idol.” Though his selection as part of the new three-judge panel on America’s favorite reality singing show was somewhat of a left-field surprise to his bandmates, the program’s fans and many critics, Tyler seems excited and enthusiastic about the gig as season 10 gets under way Wednesday night. He recently admitted that he hadn’t really watched the show before because of his busy schedule with the Boston-bred hard rock icons (and, ahem, the occasional trip to rehab), but Tyler told The Daily Beast that he sees his “Idol” run as a new wrinkle in his four-decade-plus career. “Television is just an extension of what I’ve always done,” he said. “I don’t think people have seen that Italian side of me, the side of me that can work a room like nobody’s business. It’s what I am. It’s something that people haven’t seen unless there was a party backstage after a show because that ominous person that’s out of his mind onstage is not the same guy that’s sitting in front of cameras.” He’s been everywhere, seen everything and lived to tell about it. Clearly, if there’s anyone who knows what it takes to be a star — and to have enduring success — it’s Tyler. He formed Aerosmith in Boston in 1970, along with guitarist and longtime foil Joe Perry, winning over a loyal fanbase thanks to their white-hot, blues-drenched live sets and Tyler’s magnetic stage presence. The band signed with Columbia Records in 1972 and began an ultra-successful run that spanned the remainder of the decade, releasing classics albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks, along with iconic singles like “Dream On,” “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.” Long story short, the success led to excess and the band limped into the ’80s without Perry. A career resurgence in the late ’80s and early ’90s put Aerosmith back on top of their game with a new generation of radio-friendly hits and the bandmates’ newfound sobriety. In the 2000s, Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continued to tour and release albums. But in 2009, during an Aerosmith gig at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, Tyler fell off the stage into the crowd, leading to the cancellation of their summer tour and then a string of rumors that he’d left the band to pursue a solo career. Yet, despite all of that, Aerosmith still hit the road again this past summer, with Tyler very much onboard after another stint in rehab. So, why, after one of the most successful runs in rock history, would the frontman head to “American Idol”? Sirius satellite radio host Howard Stern asked his old friend that question on Tuesday morning (January 18), and Tyler said it made perfect sense to him. “It was just taking something else other than Aerosmith, it doesn’t mean the band’s over,” said Tyler, 62, noting that last summer’s tour was one of the best he could remember, but that he needed a bit of a break to help him heal from his chronic foot condition. “I needed a rest for [my foot] and it was just something else I could get into. I wanted to see if this would be a good fit.” Setting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern’s show), Tyler said he realized it’s a new day in the music biz and, after whittling down 700 contestants to 20, he finally gets the show. “It’s something that I’ve never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show. When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy … there’s some people who sing their ass off.” After seeing a couple dozen singers who blew him away, Tyler admitted that he’s looking for the whole package: vocals, songwriting ability and the originality that marks a star. “I just thought, ‘What the f—? I get to sit next to J. Lo? … I’m looking for the [Janis] Joplin, the Christina Aguilera. Someone that’s not being Vocoded and trimmed and primped and done up. I’m looking for that natural person that can go in and sing … and the times that I found one, I teared up out there.” As for whether the show will break up the band, which has endured epic battles with drugs, jealousy and managerial interference, Tyler said, simply, hell no. ” ‘Idol’ ‘s gonna take this band up 10 notches!” he promised. Lady Gaga’s New Single Is ‘So Beautiful,’ RedOne Says

Born This Way producer says, ‘We get into the studio and suddenly magic happens.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga Photo: Steven Lawton/FilmMagic On February 13, Lady Gaga will finally release the first single off her highly anticipated May release, Born This Way . Sure, Gaga has said she wants this to be the best album of the decade and that it will most likely “piss people off,” but little is known about the album’s vibe sonically. Her producer, RedOne, wouldn’t spill too many details about the single when MTV News caught up with him at the LA Times’ The Envelope Roundtable – Music Producers, but he did let everyone know that the pair have once again made magic happen. “I think it’s too precious to talk about,” RedOne explained. “It’s so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world.” Last fall, Gaga blew her fans away when she released “Bad Romance,” a catchy, incredibly massive tune including her very own Gaga battle cry. The epic lead single off The Fame Monster has fans and haters wondering if she could ever top herself. RedOne said you don’t have to worry about that. “Honestly, the only thing we do is we get into the studio and suddenly magic happens,” he said. “We never overthink, or we just do what we do. That’s how it all started. With ‘Just Dance,’ we did it in one hour. There was no overthinking. Lady Gaga To Preview New Song At Paris Fashion Show

Gaga tweets that she’ll give a sneak peek of song Wednesday’s Thierry Mugler show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Lady Gaga has found the perfect forum to unleash some of her new music. The singer who has made outrageous fashion a huge part of her identity tweeted on Monday that she plans to preview some material from her upcoming Born This Way album on Wednesday at a Paris fashion show by Thierry Mugler. “I’m the musical director for the MUGLER fashion show,” she told her little monsters. () “I’m remixing/previewing a record on Born This Way , tailored for the show + garments.” She did not specify which song she would be previewing. The news is the latest tease of information about the eagerly awaited album, which is due out on May 23. According to identity Women’s Wear Daily, Gaga got the gig because Mugler’s new creative director is Nicola Formichetti, the designer who came up with Gaga’s infamous “meat dress” for the MTV VMAs last year. Formichetti told WWD that Gaga will serve as musical director for one of the most anticipated debuts of Men’s Fashion Week, which runs through January 23. This isn’t the first time she’s used a Paris runway to launch new music: Gaga premiered “Bad Romance” at Alexander McQueen’s show in 2009. Gaga also tweeted photos of her two 2010 Grammys, which she said were just delivered to her house by her dad. The awards for Best Electronic/Dance Album ( The Fame ) and Best Dance Recording (“Poker Face”), immediately took up residence in an important space in the singer’s home. “Look what just arrived from last year!” she wrote. “My dad put them on the piano I studied on for 14yrs.” The 24-year-old singer is up for six Grammys at next month’s awards show, which will air on February 13, the same day she is set to release the first single from her new album. She is also performing on the program, along with Eminem, Cee Lo Green, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire and Miranda Lambert. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Britney Spears Taking Risks For ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video

‘She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music,’ choreographer Brian Friedman says. By James Dinh Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In Britney Spears’ “For the Record” documentary, the pop icon stressed the importance of dance in her life, even saying that she’d be “dead” without it. And on the heels of a new era in music, the singer is ready to take her signature dance skills to a whole new level in the music video for her latest single, “Hold It Against Me,” according to choreographer Brian Friedman. Speaking with MTV’s “The Seven,” Friedman dished details on rehearsal time, his take on the new tune and his longtime partnership with the entertainer. “This is a dance video. Rehearsals can get pretty rough,” the choreographer said. “We’re playing it safe, we’re not trying to kill ourselves yet, but as the video comes closer and closer, we’ll definitely be hurting our backs. There was a moment while we were rehearsing where I showed Britney a section and it was something I really wanted her to do, and she freaked out. … It’s crazy when you first see something like that, how overwhelming it can be, especially when you haven’t been in the [dance] studio for a year.” Despite Ms. Spears’ early hesitation, the dance mastermind said it was probably the wrong section of the routine to show her first, revealing that the pop superstar has learned the moves and is “killing it now.” Reports of a new Britney music video leaked in December when the fansite BreatheHeavy.com posted a notice for auditions. “It’s been the biggest buzz, you know?” he continued. “There’s been a lot of speculation as to when the actual project started and it’s been blowing up on my Twitter. People have been asking, ‘Are you in rehearsals? Are you in auditions?’ and that’s the mystery that should be unknown. What we do know is we’re in rehearsal studios right now and the video’s coming.” How exactly does “Hold It Against Me” fare in comparison to the slew of other dance tunes under Britney’s belt? Calling the iTunes chart topper “the hardest dance track that she’s ever put out,” Friedman said, “It’s infectious. The beat gets inside of you, and just when you think you know it, it takes a turn. The song, in particular, is one of my favorite songs I’ve heard off the bat. I’m really excited about choreographing it.” Spears and Friedman have a long-standing professional relationship, including working together on the pop singer’s 2002 dance heavy “Overprotected (Remix)” music video. Later on in his chat with “The Seven,” the Illinois native recalled his first encounter with the then-teenager through a mutual friend who was dancing for her at the time. After meeting with the singer, Brian teamed up with her for her Grammy performance. “From then on, we became friends and she is fun to work with,” he gushed. “She’s a Southern girl — she’s all about having fun and laughing and cracking jokes. I think you can expect the unexpected from Britney. She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music — she’s grown up so much, and she’s pushing 30 years old soon, so she’s a strong independent woman and I think she wants to show that.” Are you looking forward to seeing Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” video?
