Former ‘Canadian Idol’ Contestant Arrested In Terrorist Plot

Khurram Sher, charged in connection with a bombing plot in Canada, tried out for the show in 2008. By Gil Kaufman Khurram Sayed Sher on “Canadian Idol” Photo: CTV A Montreal man authorities have charged with conspiracy in a terrorist plot to bomb sites in Canada and abroad tried out for “Canadian Idol” with a moonwalking, robot popping, off-key version of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” in 2008 that amused judges, but has confused authorities. Khurram Sayed Sher made a bid for the Northern version of “Idol” two years ago and was featured in the televised audition rounds as one of the lesser talents, with the Winnipeg Free Press reporting that he got a thumbs-up for his dance moves from the judges, but no love for his shaky vocals. “That was some genuine crap singing,” judge Zack Werner said at the time. “It’s sort of absurd. It is a little weird,” said Jake Gold, one of the judges on the Canadian show. “He was a funny guy. At the same time, it’s not a laughing matter.” Sher, a native of Pakistan, appeared on the show wearing a traditional shimmering green salwar kameez outfit, typically worn in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and a Pashtun hat and speaking in a thick accent that disappeared when he sang. He told judges he was from Pakistan and came to Canada in 2005. But those who knew him when he attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal told the Toronto Star that Sher was born in Montreal, had no accent and seemed very “westernized.” One unnamed person who reportedly knew him well said he used the fake Pakistani accent and wore the traditional clothes as a goof. “He did it as a joke,” the friend said. Sher, 28, a hockey player and father of three, is a pathologist who graduated from one of Canada’s most prestigious medical schools, and was a humanitarian aid worker who helped earthquake survivors in Pakistan in 2005. He was arrested on Tuesday after Canadian authorities alleged he was part of a terrorist conspiracy. He was named in court documents as being part of a conspiracy in Ottawa to “knowingly facilitate terrorist activities” in Canada and abroad, including a plot to build and detonate remote-controlled bombs in Canada.

Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood Call Off Engagement

Couple reportedly ‘fought a lot’ and ended their seven-month-long engagement last week. By Jocelyn Vena Evan Rachel Wood and Marilyn Manson Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood have called off their engagement. After getting engaged in January when Manson popped the question to his on-again, off-again girlfriend onstage in Paris, the pair has decided to split, according to People.com . They reportedly ended the relationship last week. UsMagazine.com reports that “they fought a lot. It was always on and off. He’s a creative mind so not the easiest person to be in a relationship with.” A rep for the “True Blood” actress hadn’t responded to MTV News emails to confirm the reports by press time. The two have reportedly always been very on-and-off. After initially dating in 2006, they split two years later before reconciling and getting engaged earlier this year. During their time apart, Wood was reportedly dating “Nikita” star Shane West. And it seems Manson is handling his broken heart by hitting the town. Manson, who was once married to burlesque star Dita Von Teese, and guitarist Twiggy Ramirez were seen getting their party on in Los Angeles on Saturday night. They had dinner at hotspot STK before getting their dance on at Boudoir along with Playmate of the Year Colleen Shannon. E! News reports that Manson also had an unidentified brunette with him and was introducing her to people as his new girlfriend. “They just broke off their engagement, and he needed a night out with friends,” one source tells People.com. Last year, Wood spoke to MTV News about Manson , saying, “We have the same sense of humor.” And she admitted that no one was too surprised by the pairing. “They would be more shocked about [my ‘Whatever Works’ co-star] Larry David,” she joked. “Nobody asked me why — they asked me how.” Related Artists Marilyn Manson

Nicki Minaj Doubles Up On Billboard Hot 100

Young Money MC features on Jay Sean, Sean Kingston singles — two of only four tracks debuting on this week’s chart. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj is featured on two of the four tracks debuting this week on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 chart as she makes guest appearances on Sean Kingston’s “Letting Go (Dutty Love)” and Jay Sean’s “2012 (It Ain”t The End).” The chart successes follow the Young Money femcee’s own #1 single, “Your Love,” which currently sits in the top 20. But the Kingston and Jay Sean records prove an underlying point about Minaj: The Queens lyricist has managed to make her mark via collaborations; she sizzled on numbers with Usher ( “Lil Freak” ), Robin Thicke ( “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy” ) and Mariah Carey (“Up Out My Face”). “It feels crazy,” she told MTV News earlier this year about all the calls for collaborations. “I never imagined it. I never really imagined all of this. It feels good because when you’re working at something, sometimes you feel like you’ll never be recognized for your true talents. Especially when you’re a girl, you feel like people will only see one thing. But now when people hit me, it’s, ‘Could you be on this remix?’ It shows that they respect my talent, and that means a lot.” The animated rapper recently revealed the name of her forthcoming debut album, Pink Friday, via Twitter. She’s been mostly hush, though, regarding details of the project. But this month she explained to MTV News that she’s enjoying the process of crafting her first album. “The album is progressing miraculously , I would say,” Minaj told us. “It’s coming out way better than I could even have imagined or dreamed or hoped for.” Who do you think Nicki Minaj should work with next? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj Sean Kingston Jay Sean

Lady Gaga Says Her New Album Is ‘Utter Liberation’

Pop star tells i-D magazine she wants to ‘create the anthem for my generation.’ By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga may have caused a stir with her recent talk of sex and drug use, but the singer knows that in the end it all boils down to the music. In the pre-Fall issue of i-D magazine that surfaced online on Friday (August 13), the songstress opens up about what she has planned for her upcoming album. “The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it,” Gaga said of her still-untitled album. “The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.” While the singer has frequently worked with producers like RedOne (“Bad Romance” and “Just Dance”), Gaga plans to keep her sound fresh with a line of new producers on the forthcoming project. But she’s keeping them a secret, saying, “I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them. So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.” And for those who were wondering if the Elton John-esque ballad “You and I” was an indication of the project’s sound, Gaga said, “It’s not totally indicative of the new album sound; it’s just a really big rock-and-roll hit.” The pop star confirmed that the song, which she first performed at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball in June, will appear on the LP. “I do have these hopes that it could be a great rock crossover record, so I’m going to put my producer’s hat on and get it to a place where I feel like it could reach the masses,” she said. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful lyric and melody. I wrote it at the piano I grew up playing in New York.” Despite the success of Gaga’s collaborations with Beyonc

Lauren Froderman doesn’t just think she can dance. The 18-year old cheerleader is certain of it after being crowned the So You Think You Can Dance winner for 2010. But while many viewers are happy for Froderman, they are buzzing over another performer on last night’s episode: Ellen DeGeneres! Indeed, the talk show host may not consider herself a worthy judge on American Idol , but she clearly has a place on reality TV when it comes to dancing. So You Think You Can Dance Finale: The Winner Shakes It All

Let’s discuss whether the winner earned his/her title and whether surprise guest Ellen DeGeneres added any anti- Idol shade to the proceedings.

Lauren Froderman Wins So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance ended its season finale last night with two broken hearts, one dancer $250,000 richer and everyone in need of a crash cart. The three finalists – Kent Boyd, Lauren Froderman and Robert Roldan – danced eight routines between them, and the All-Stars got quite the workout, too. When the votes came in, Lauren was the winner. The 18-year-old cheerleader from Phoenix, Ariz., pulled a modest upset over Kent, the judges’ and fans’ golden boy from the first audition of the season. “There’s a ton of things I’d like to say,” said Lauren, battling shock, laughter and tears as her name was announced over Kent’s (Robert was ousted first). “But I can’t!” AMERICA’S FAVORITE DANCER : Lauren Froderman deserved the honor! Despite being the only female dancer in the show’s top six this year, Lauren proved week after week that she was a force to be reckoned with, even against Kent. She couldn’t be confined to one particular genre and managed to be sexy, feminine and technically proficient in ways most dancers, even elite ones, struggle to. One awesome, random surprise of the So You Think You Can Dance finale ? Ellen DeGeneres filling in for the injured Alex Wong to get down with some hip-hop. The woman loves to dance. Wonder if there’s something to the fact that producer Nigel Lythgoe is returning to American Idol , which Ellen just left the panel of. In any case, congratulations again to Lauren (and Kent and Robert)!
