Lady Gaga Brings Contagious Energy To Staples Center

After a 72-hour bender of recording new songs, Gaga played the favorites at first of two L.A. shows. By Matt Elias Lady Gaga performs at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Fresh from her headlining gig at Lollapalooza, Lady Gaga rolled her Monster Ball into L.A. on Wednesday night for the first of two shows at the Staples Center. Hours before the concert started, Gaga’s little monsters marauded around the venue, decked out in Gaga gear. The theme for the ball may as well been a “no pants party,” with fans of both sexes parading in fishnets and leotards. It wasn’t just Mother Monster’s kin in attendance — Perez Hilton tweeted that Britney Spears was on hand for the show, though he said she left after a few songs. With the pop princess watching, Gaga took the stage just after 9 p.m. It was everything you would expect from a Gaga production — the sets! the costumes! the lights! — but what can’t be overlooked is the energy. Gaga and her dancers gave it their all for two hours and change. With four major set changes, 19 songs (not including the interstitial tunes) and an arching narrative throughout the show, the Monster Ball seems less of a concert than a Broadway musical at times. The set kicked off with “Dance in the Dark,” “Glitter and Grease” and “Just Dance” (the opening notes of which were played on a keyboard that was hidden under the hood of a broken down car). Gaga’s first wardrobe choice of the night was a pair of oversize purple shades, a giant shoulder-padded purple jacket and a purple leopard-print leotard underneath. After the first few songs, Gaga addressed her adoring crowd. “The Monster Ball is sexual freedom,” she declared. “Tonight in Los Angeles we’ll be super freaks and monsters.” And she continued her conversation with the audience throughout the night. With fans on their feet during a rousing rendition of “LoveGame” (encouraged by Gaga’s “Now dance mother—-ers!), she thanked them for buying tickets and supporting her. “Tonight, I want you to free yourselves, forget your insecurities.” Next up was “Boys Boys Boys,” followed by a brief exit. She returned from beneath the stage on a riser to perform “Money Honey.” She then took time to call a fan in the cheap seats and surprise him with tickets closer to the stage. It was a perfect segue to “Telephone,” which was one of the most elaborate dance routines and biggest sing-alongs of the night. But Gaga had to settle the crowd for at least a few minutes during the night. With her piano rising from the beneath the stage, she launched into “Speechless” — which she dedicated to her dad, who was also in attendance. Next was new tune “You and I,” proving that all the she really needs is her voice and a piano. The new song was a tease of what’s yet to come. Gaga announced that she had been on a 72-hour bender of writing and recording new music. “I want to put it out tomorrow,” she said, “but I can’t!” “So Happy I Could Die,” “Monster” and “Teeth” kept the show moving until the climactic “Alejandro,” “Poker Face” and Paparazzi.” At one point, Gaga emerged in a bra and panty set that sprayed sparks from her unmentionable regions. But the crowd’s biggest eruption occurred during the encore. With the curtain still down, Gaga’s familiar “oh, oh, oh-oh-oooh” broke over the speakers, and fans instantly recognized “Bad Romance.” As fans roared, the curtain lifted to reveal her in a rotating sphere wearing a mirrored angular outfit. It was her 19th song of concert — with almost as many wardrobe changes — and it was finally time for Gaga to call it a night as her monsters exited the ball sweaty and satisfied. And his collaboration with Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Steve Aoki and crunk king Lil Jon , “Turbulence,” has become a staple in house-music sets at some of the biggest music festivals around the world, even before its official release. In addition to all of that, Luke is in the running to become America’s Best DJ , and he counts Ti

Flo Rida ‘Looks Forward’ To David Guetta Bringing Home A VMA

Guetta is up against Lady Gaga, Usher and others for Best Dance Music Video at the 2010 Video Music Awards. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images As if working with the Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Rihanna weren’t enough of a signal of international dance music’s crossover star David Guetta ‘s two-year ascension to the top of the American urban pop-music scene, the French house-music producer is up for a Moonman at this year’s Video Music Awards . Nominated for Best Dance Music Video for his hit single “Sexy Chick,” featuring Akon, Guetta is up against some stiff competition for his big night in L.A. on September 12. His fellow nominees include Usher for “OMG,” German dance group Cascada (remember “Everytime We Touch”?) for “Evacuate the Dancefloor” and Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” featuring Snooki, the Situation and company. And let’s not forget the biggest of elephants in the room, Lady Gaga for “Bad Romance.” Still, DGuetta’s boy, rapper Flo Rida, with whom he currently has a top 10 hit in Europe with “Club Can’t Handle Me,” thinks his chances of winning are rather good. “My reaction to David Guetta being nominated for ‘Best Dance Video’? Well, he’s definitely a household name,” Flo told MTV UK today in London. “Not just nationally, but he’s internationally known. He’s a passionate dude about his music and he gets the party crunk. I look forward to him taking that home.” “The genius of him is the fact that he is a perfectionist. He strives to make sure that a record has the right gumbo,” Flo said using the analogy of the Southern dish of random ingredients that somehow just tastes right. “It moves you — having you bob your head. If you are a dancer, it will make you try some new moves. David Guetta has that work ethic and that drive to make sure he has the #1 party record, like we do right now with ‘Club Can’t Handle Me.’ ” And while fans will have to wait till the big night to find out if Guetta proves the victor, Flo Rida has a special message for all you David Guetta fans out there. “To David Guetta and his fans, y’all make sure and support him,” Flo said. “David, you know you work hard. You grind. Win or lose, I feel like you are still the winner because you have fans that are very loyal to you. So do your thing. Keep your head up.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12. Christina Aguilera’s ‘Burlesque’ Trailer Debuts

Trailer features Cher and shows Aguilera’s character’s struggle to make it as an entertainer. By Eric Ditzian Christina Aguilera in “Burlesque” Photo: Screen Gems It’s been a while since Christina Aguilera was an up-and-coming artist on the pop music scene, and even back then, she didn’t struggle for long. Her debut album hit the #1 Billboard spot and went platinum eight times. But Aguilera’s starring turn in “Burlesque” thrusts the 29-year-old back into the role of aspiring artist, and as the movie’s first trailer shows, Aguilera has taken to the portrayal quite well. Our first glimpse of Xtina comes as she books a one-way bus ticket out of her small town and toward the bright lights and skimpy outfits of Los Angeles. She lands at a nightclub run by none other than Cher and fights her way onto the stage and in front of an audience as a burlesque performer. “When you are putting on your makeup, it’s like you’re an artist, but instead of painting a canvas, you’re painting a face,” Cher explains. The trailer gives us a glimpse at Aguilera’s attempts to convince Cher to give her a shot to perform, her burgeoning relationship with Cam Gigandet, her rivalry with Kristen Bell and, of course, her crazy vocal abilities. “It’s sexy, it’s sensual,” Aguilera said of the film last month. “The whole idea of burlesque has always intrigued me . The art of the tease, the dance, beautiful women — need I say more?” Though “Burlesque” marks Xtina’s feature film debut, director Steven Antin revealed she didn’t have any trouble getting the hang of a movie set. “She figured out how it works within weeks,” he said. “She is a little bit of a freak of nature and a perfectionist. This girl is a movie star.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Burlesque.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Allison Iraheta Gushes About ‘Don’t Waste The Pretty’ Co-Star Orianthi

‘We want to write together,’ she says of her tourmate on Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation jaunt. By Jim Cantiello Orianthi and Allison Iraheta Photo: Donald Kravitz/ Getty Images If you saw Allison Iraheta and Orianthi recently on “So You Think You Can Dance” and thought, “Dang, they have some killer chemistry,” you’re not alone. The two have been rocking together on an almost nightly basis, thanks to Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation Tour , on which they each perform opening sets and collaborate on Iraheta’s single “Don’t Waste the Pretty.” “When [Orianthi] comes out [onstage], I get all crazy,” Iraheta told MTV News when Glam Nation hit New York this summer. “I’m all, ‘Man, I gotta start getting all manly and stuff.’ ‘Cause when she plays — her face, man. She’s intense.” Allison tapped the Australian guitar wiz to give “Pretty” a dirtier rock edge versus the pop recording initially released on her debut album, Just Like You. “She brings something so different to the song. It’s so crazy,” Iraheta beamed. Allison and Orianthi (Alli-anthi?) have so much fun rocking out, the two plan to join forces more often. “We want to write together,” Iraheta said. “I even told her: ‘Let’s bring the Heart [sound] back!’ ” The redheaded rocker (who gained millions of fans when she debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol” with a Heart song, appropriately enough) even went so far as to say she’d consider creating a band with Orianthi down the road. OK, so a permanent Alli-anthi rock band probably won’t happen. Instead, fans should just keep “Don’t Waste the Pretty” on repeat and hope that their busy schedules allow for a killer music video. When we spoke with Allison in June, she hinted that she’d have time to film a proper video once her Glam Nation commitment ended. But that was before Iraheta’s stint on Lambert’s tour was extended through October, thanks to popular demand from fans. Would you like to see Allison and Orianthi join forces on the regular? Cindy Sheehan Says Stop Voting for Either Wing of the War Party, Calls for Impeaching Obama

During the campaign, many colleagues and friends of mine, assured me that Obama was just saying this hostile crap to “get elected” and once he was elected that he would “do the right thing.” Well, first of all, why support such a pandering Jackwagon, and secondly, how has that ever worked? Three days after Obama swore to uphold and defend the Constitution, he drone-bombed a “target” in Pakistan killing 3 dozen civilians—and since that day he has elevated the art of drone bombings to new heights, while the so-called antiwar movement looks on in silent complacency and while Democratic operatives disguised as antiwar groups are hoping against hope that Obama comes out strong with a new antiwar marketing campaign to assure his “re-election.” Even though not one progressive issue has been propagated during his term, these war supporters are looking forward to another four years of the dance of death. Right foot kill—left foot torture—spin around for environmental devastation—allemande left for health care fascism—and shimmy right for bankster bailouts. Wasn’t eight years of this crap during the Bush stain enough for y’all? Many antiwar groups and people who claim they are for peace lose their minds during election season thinking that the razor-thin difference between the Democrat and Republican is enough to go ape-shit crazy in working for the Democrat. Just take the last two Democratic candidates, for example. Kerry and Obama both supported more war. An “antiwar” movement de-legitimizes itself when it works hard for a candidate who does not promise total and rapid withdrawal of troops from wherever they happen to be at the time AND does not promise to end war as an imperial tool of corporate conquest. The majority of the so-called antiwar movement, in fact, voted for a candidate that PROMISED to contract one war only to be able to profoundly EXPAND another. Obama all along said that he is not against all war, just “dumb wars.” If there existed an antiwar movement that had integrity—it would have said that “all wars are dumb,” and we withhold our support for just another dyed-in-the-wool warmonger.
