‘Dancing With The Stars’ Kicks Aiden Turner To The Curb

Kate Gosselin saved from elimination despite another low-scoring night. By Kelley L. Carter Edyta Sliwinska and Aiden Turner Photo: ABC “Dancing With The Stars” will be a little less hunky, not that Aiden Turner, the British “All My Children” soap stud, was eliminated Tuesday night. “Each week I came out here, I gave it my all and I got less nervous dancing in front of an audience, and last night I had the best time,” Turner said after his elimination. Joining him in the bottom three were comedienne Niecy Nash and reality-TV mom Kate Gosselin, the latter of whom managed to survive another week in spite of being Monday night’s lowest scorer. The first two safe couples of the night were Chad Ochocinco and partner Cheryl Burke, and “Bachelor” star Jake Pavelka and partner Chelsie Hightower. Before they knew if they were safe, Pamela Anderson and partner Damian Whitewood, were asked to repeat Monday’s rumba, the dance with which she wanted show the judges that she could be a refined dancer, not just sexy. To draw out the suspense, the show aired clips of mock movie trailers, which helped promote next week’s theme of “Movie Night.” “Ten seasons, first time I’m actually speechless,” host Tom Bergeron joked after airing a trailer that featured a partner dance play on “Rambo.” Tuesday night’s guest performances were diverse. Chart-topping artist Sade performed her latest single, “Babyfather,” and an old favorite “Sweetest Taboo.” Nuttin’ But Stringz, the violin-playing brothers Damien and Tourie Escobar added some hip-hop flavor to the show, delivering a high-energy string set layered over traditional hip-hop break beats, while dancers from the New York City ballet performed in front of them. And then montages of grainy video and old school photos of the show’s professional dancers were shown, followed by performances by younger dancers who represent the future of ballroom. Backstage, after being saved, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger talked about why she cried at the conclusion of Monday night’s show. “I was upset about my performance,” she said. “I was upset because I let my nerves get the best of me. I was just really frustrated with myself.” Related Photos The 2010 Cast Of ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Kate Gosselin Speaks on Dancing "Breakthrough"

Kate Gosselin electrified the Dancing with the Stars crowd last night. Okay, not really. She sucked and still got the lowest score. But she sucked a lot less than previous weeks, and that’s building up her confidence. “Dancing is starting to feel natural; that’s scary, right?” Kate told E! last night after her Dancing With the Stars “mini-breakthrough” of a tango. Does Tony Dovolani agree about the bane of his existence his partner? Believe it or not, yes: “She crossed over to the dancing side,” he said. “It sounds like the dark side,” she joked. No doubt Jon Gosselin would have a witty retort if he weren’t chasing mediocre skirts somewhere. It’s not saying much, but last night was Kate’s best effort yet. “I was totally in the dance,” Kate added . “This was the first week I had fun out there. I was with Tony the entire time. Who had time to be nervous? I was dancing!” Will the fans keep her around for another week? If they did so the previous two, you’d have to think she stands a good chance this time. She sure hopes so, too. “I am psyched, we’re going to practice after this,” she said following her interview earlier today. “I’m totally into this and using my time wisely,” she promised. Who are you rooting for on Dancing with the Stars?

Ryan Tedder Doesn’t ‘Remember’ Telling Lady Gaga To ‘Be Careful’

But the OneRepublic singer does say that, as an artist, ‘you gotta take care of your health first.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder and Eddie Fisher Photo: MTV News Here’s the thing about OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder’s recent comments about Lady Gaga in People magazine: He doesn’t remember actually making them, but that doesn’t mean he’s backing down from them either. A quick refresher: Late last month, after footage surfaced of Gaga nearly collapsing onstage during a concert in New Zealand (an incident she chalked up to “jet lag”), Tedder supposedly told People that he was concerned for LG’s health. “Gaga has to be careful,” he was quoted as saying. “She’s already larger than life. How do you get larger than that?” It seemed like a fairly harmless comment, though as it began to make its way around various gossip sites, all of that changed. When MTV News spoke to Tedder and his OneRepublic mates last week, we decided to ask him to clarify his statement. And, as it turns out, he did a lot more than that. “I’ve had two or three people ask me about that, and I had friends who picked up People magazine last week or the week before, and they’re like, ‘You’re in People, someone asked you about Lady Gaga,’ ” Tedder said. “I don’t even remember saying that. To be honest, I don’t even know that I did. ” At press time, a rep for People had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment. While Tedder doesn’t recall saying he was concerned about Gaga’s health, he freely admits that he is. After all, he’s been through the wringer a time or two and knows how taxing and tormenting it can be, and he doesn’t want to see Gaga go down the same path he did. “I’ve only met her once, but I had, like, a two-hour conversation with her nonstop the first time that I hung out with her, right before ‘Just Dance’ came out, and thought she was the coolest, smartest [person]. I was like, ‘God, she’s got her crap together.’ She was legit,” he said. “So I don’t know her, I don’t pretend like I know her, but the fact that I, for a moment, connected with her humanity, and I know how hard we work, and I know the schedule after ‘Apologize’ blew up … the longest stretch of time we were home in a row, for about 13 months, was two and a half days. And that can push you to a brink, where your job becomes who you are, and you end up reaching a breaking point, where all of a sudden you hate it, and you just want to quit. “Or you get sick — we pushed it so hard earlier this year, we were touring with Rob Thomas, and every single day was ‘show, promo/press during the day, show that night,’ and I lost my voice and got swine flu,” Tedder continued. “And the doctor was like, ‘Look, I’ve dealt with a lot of you artists. I’ve had Kanye in here, I’ve had R. Kelly, I’ve had all these different people come through my office. … If you don’t slow down, your body will shut you down completely.’ And so, if you’re collapsing onstage, I don’t care how much money [you have] or how much you love your ‘Little Monsters,’ you gotta take care of your health first. For anybody. For us. I mean, we’ve had to slow down.” So while Tedder isn’t trying to preach, he just hopes Gaga will slow things down a bit. But, knowing her reputation, he’s not sure she will. “My hat goes off to her. Nobody works harder than Lady Gaga. Nobody. She is unbelievable. I don’t know how she sleeps, or when or if,” he said. “But I know people who work with her, and they’re like, ‘She is the most dedicated, committed, hardworking person around.’ ” To be honest, Tedder isn’t even upset that something he may (or may not) have actually said has gotten twisted up. Far from it. If anything, he’s sort of used to it by now. “I’ve had different quotes. Like, something involving Simon Cowell a long time ago, and the British press got a hold of it, and it was like me and Simon were fighting,” he said. “And then something recently about me ripping on a producer that did our first album, which never happened. It’s just funny.” What do you think about Ryan’s explanation? Do you think Gaga should take it easy? Let us know in the comments! Ferry Corsten Delivers All-Original Tracks On Once Upon A Night

The Dutch trance DJ/producer shunned remixes for his new compilation. By Adam Stewart and Akshay Bhansali Ferry Corsten Photo: MTV News With the success of his satellite radio show “Corsten’s Countdown,” and previous albums L.E.F. and Twice in a Blue Moon, Dutch DJ/producer Ferry Corsten has established himself as a mighty brand in the electronic music world. Over the years Winter Music Conference has often been the chosen occasion for Corsten to launch his new projects, so, naturally, when MTV News caught up with him just before his show at Karu & Y, in Miami last month, he had a bit of news to share. Corsten was eager to talk about his compilation album Once Upon a Night, which contains only exclusive tracks made specifically for this release, an unusual move in a business consumed by previously mixed and remixed albums. “This is not your usual mix compilation,” Corsten told MTV News. “It’s sort of like a ‘Ferry and Friends’ artist album in the way it’s mixed. All 25 tracks on the double disc have been exclusively produced for this compilation, so it’s all brand new stuff. It’s a bit of a different approach, a bit of a risky one.” Ferry enjoyed the creative process of collecting all-original music. “The cool thing is … it’s not just looking for the right tracks,” he said. “It’s also directing the artists that I’ve invited to submit tracks, directing them in a certain direction. [Saying,] ‘This is what I’m looking for. This kind of sound. This kind of vibe.’ It’s just real cool to do it that way.” In support of Once Upon a Night — which features mega-producer BT, and up-and-comers Mark Sixma, Akira Kayosa and Rafael Frost — Corsten is heading out on a global tour by the same name. He said fans can expect a fresh interactive visual element to the stage show. “You hear certain things happen in the music,” he said. “You’ll either see some words come out, or you’ll see me on the screen doing something in time with the music. It’s very responsive to the crowds. I’m traveling with a crew, and these guys are right on the button, and whatever happens, they’re on it.” After performing at London’s O2 arena on Friday (April 9) and Nijmegen, the Netherlands, on Saturday, Corsten plans to hit China, Korea, Japan, the Philippines and Australia in the first six weeks of the tour, before returning to Europe. He’ll come to the States in the fall. When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. Poreotix Say Winning ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ Is ‘A Dream Come True’

The dance group credit their victory to ‘being true’ to themselves. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Poreotix and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News On Thursday night, “America’s Best Dance Crew” found its latest champs: Poreotix . And the California natives admit that they still can’t believe they managed to rise up the ranks and beat out the Blueprint Cru as season five’s winning team. When MTV News caught up with the crew, they said they were still reeling from the news. Describing the win as “a dream come true,” they explained they were not only excited by the win but also the fact that the show gave them the chance to “inspire the fans.” So, what made the Poreotix stand out? In their opinion, it was their ability to be themselves week after week that connected most to fans. “I think we did a lot of stuff the other crews wouldn’t have done,” Dumbo Nguyen explained. “We don’t move around the stage a lot, but we definitely entertain a lot of people.” Dumbo summed up their dance mantra this way: “We want to show people that we’re able to stand here and entertain you and don’t have to run around the stage and do crazy stuff. As long as you bring your true self out and people enjoy that, that’s all that matters.” The crew said their biggest challenge was during disco week. And the guys will be back for charity week, when they plan to bring their game again by “being true to ourselves again. Popping choreography robotics,” Dumbo said. And what will the guys spend their winnings on? Whatever’s left over after school tuition and rent, they’ll put into savings. It seems these guys aren’t just dance machines, they’re also practical. Are you happy with Poreotix’s win? Talk about your favorite “ABDC” moments in the comments below! Weezer, Kid Cudi, Lil Jon Work With Steve Aoki On New Album

‘It should be interesting,’ Aoki says of the eclectic collaborations. By Adam Murphy, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Steve Aoki Photo: MTV News At this year’s Winter Music Conference in Miami, MTV News spoke to some of the biggest names in dance music and beyond. One name that we couldn’t escape was West coast electronic tycoon Steve Aoki. To assign any one title to Steve Aoki is to do his talents a disservice. DJ, producer and record-label owner (Dim Mak) are but a few of the hats which he somehow manages to wear all at once. And if you’ve heard him spin, Aoki doesn’t miss a beat. As mainstream artists are increasingly consulting underground icons of dance music for production advice, Aoki has a well-trodden path from the major labels to his doorstep, having remixed hit singles for Weezer, Kid Cudi, Robin Thicke, The Killers and beyond. On the international scene, however, Aoki is a completely different phenomenon. His track “I’m in the House,” which features Zuper Blahq (who is almost certainly the alter ego of Will.I.Am ) has been making waves in the clubs and on the indie and dance singles charts abroad since it dropped in November of last year. This reboot of the chant-along sensibility of classic house (also revamped by David Guetta in “On the Dancefloor”) may offer us a glimpse of Aoki’s forthcoming LP. “With my album I’m doing a couple of different tracks with some familiar voices,” Aoki said. “Zuper Blahq, Kid Cudi, Lil John, Weezer, Black Star, Uffie, Sky Ferreira … just mixing it up with some hip-hop vocals, rock vocals, house vocals. So yeah, it should be interesting.” Aoki’s eclectic sensibility and his D.I.Y. spirit perhaps stem from his roots in — of all things — hardcore punk bands. And as more and more “bedroom producers” ascend to international stardom, the independent spirit seems to be the look of the moment. “We’re all doing it ourselves,” Aoki offered. “We’re making enough of a riot in our own world that more people are getting interested and want to get involved in what we’re doing. And if it makes sense to do a collaboration with a familiar voice that everyone knows, then it can make sense on both sides. It can work on the underground and it can work in the commercial world.” When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week.
