‘Paranormal Activity 2’: Everything We Know So Far

We track the progress of ‘Paranormal Activity’ sequel, from first film’s debut to new teaser trailer. By Josh Wigler “Paranormal Activity” Photo: DreamWorks Pictures You thought the cameras were off. You thought the ghosts were gone. You thought the nightmare was over. You were wrong. The first teaser trailer for “Paranormal Activity 2” premiered online on Wednesday (June 30), offering a startling way to start the day for working stiffs across the country. But even though it feels like the horror sequel is emerging completely out of left field — indeed, it was less than a year ago that the lucrative cult phenomenon first hit theaters — there have actually been several moves behind the scenes to bring “Paranormal 2” to the big screen. The real surprise with “Paranormal Activity 2” is the fact that the film even exists. The original Oren Peli-directed film was nothing short of an astonishing Cinderella story, filmed on a shoestring budget of $15,000 and going on to make close to $200 million worldwide. “Paranormal Activity” caused such a stir that ancillary merchandising unspooled almost immediately after the film’s release, with talk of a sequel following shortly thereafter. Of course, getting the “Paranormal” sequel off the ground wasn’t without some false starts. The sequel was first announced with Michael R. Perry tackling the script and Kevin Greutert directing the film, while original director Oren Peli moved on to film a new horror film, “Area 51.” But Greutert was soon removed from “Paranormal 2” due to his contractual obligations to direct “Saw VII 3-D.” Rumors ran rampant regarding Greutert’s successor, with “Scarface” director Brian De Palma connected to the job at one point. Ultimately, Tod “Kip” Williams won the role. The director’s chair wasn’t the only vacant position that needed filling — the “Paranormal” sequel needed stars, too. Actress Katie Featherston, who was nominated for an MTV Movie Award this year for her “Paranormal” performance, expressed some skepticism about returning for the sequel when she spoke with MTV in May. “I don’t know. I’m waiting to hear,” Featherston said . “If they had a way to put me in there in a way that would be reasonable and make sense — I don’t know how they’d do that — I’d definitely be down for it. If I get that phone call, I will be there. I will be scared or happy or whatever they want me to be.” Actor Micah Sloat seemed to know much more about the status of “Paranormal 2” than his co-star, despite his character’s tragic fate at the conclusion of the first film. “I know a lot I can’t tell you,” Sloat told MTV News in March. “All I can tell you is I’m very excited for the project, it’s really cool, it’s gonna be really interesting and it’s not gonna suck, which most horror sequels … would. This is gonna be good.” Sloat touched on a key difference between the two “Paranormal” films: while the first movie was filmed cheaply as a necessity, “Paranormal Activity 2” has access to a far greater budget thanks to its predecessor’s success. “We we have money now, but we’re staying true to the heart of the movie, to the spirit of it, to the vision,” he said at the time. Judging by the recently released trailer, it’s clear what Sloat meant in terms of staying true to the vision: the franchise’s unique camera perspectives remain intact, if evolved. The scares are sure to deliver as well. Certainly, there are several key details remaining to be filled when it comes to “Paranormal Activity 2,” but there’s one thing that requires no explanation: The sequel’s very existence owes everything to the first film’s outpouring of fan support. “If our fans didn’t go online and ‘demand’ that the movie expand to their own cities, it wouldn’t have gone anywhere. If you didn’t spread the word on Twitter and Facebook, and tell your friends and family they had to see it for themselves, no one would have cared. It was because of you that ‘Paranormal Activity’ expanded from city to city, and eventually — when a MILLION of you demanded that it open nationwide — it finally got the wide release we’d been dreaming about for years,” director Oren Peli said in a statement released to MTV earlier this year. “Looking back on everything, I can truly say that it was your passion and enthusiasm that made it all possible.” Are you excited for “Paranormal Activity 2”? Daniel Radcliffe Was ‘OK’ With Being A Shorter ‘Harry Potter’

‘As long as Emma and Rupert weren’t shooting up too quickly either,’ star tells MTV News of falling few inches shy of Harry’s height in books. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe and Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News In J.K. Rowling’s universe, Harry Potter isn’t a giant but he’s eventually described as slightly taller than average as the series progresses. So what did the actor who’s become synonymous with the wizard think of playing a character whose proportions don’t quite match his own? Daniel Radcliffe tells MTV News he wasn’t too concerned — but with some conditions. “I didn’t get particularly worried because as long as Emma [Watson] and Rupert [Grint] weren’t shooting up too quickly either, I’d look [fine],” he told us earlier this month at the opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios . “We’d all look relatively [the same height]. It was all going to be OK,” Radcliffe added. Still, Radcliffe admitted he wouldn’t mind adding a few inches to his real-life frame. “I was worried on a personal level because I wanted to be slightly taller than I am, ideally,” he explained. “But I’ve now accepted it. Basically, I’ve came to the conclusion a while ago that you can either be really bitter about it or you can make loads of funny jokes.” What kinds of jokes, we asked. “When I meet people now and they all say, ‘God you’re so much shorter than I expected!’ I always say, ‘No! I’m actually slightly further away than you think,’ ” he smiled, adding, “Which confuses them.” Can you imagine anyone besides Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! Fat Joe Denies Sexual-Assault Claims

Rapper’s lawyer says woman making claims ‘posed as a fan’ and then made ‘false allegations.’ By Gil Kaufman Fat Joe Photo: Carlos Marino/ Getty Images A lawyer for rapper Fat Joe vehemently denied allegations by a Wisconsin woman who claimed she was a victim of sexual assault in the MC’s limousine on Sunday night. “Rapper Joseph Cartagena, known as Fat Joe, members of his entourage and security staff were briefly questioned by members of the Madison, Wisconsin, Police Department who were investigating false allegations made by a woman who initially posed as a fan and later claimed to be the victim of an assault after demanding money,” Joe’s lawyer, Dawn Florio, wrote in a statement, which was called “Groupie Pretender Targets Rapper for Shakedown.” The statement continues, “At no point did Mr. Cartagena or any member of his entourage assault or have any improper contact with the woman. It is truly unfortunate that false allegations such as these cause the public to doubt the claims of actual victims of sexual assaults.” Police are still investigating the claims made by an unnamed local 33-year-old woman who called police around 12:46 a.m. Monday to report the alleged incident. Joe was in town on Sunday night to perform a gig at the Orpheum Theater. The woman claimed that after the concert, she was invited to ride in the rapper’s Cadillac limousine with his entourage on the way to their hotel, according to an incident report from the Madison PD. She claimed that she was inappropriately touched while riding in the limo. Joe was detained for questioning, along with other unidentified members of his crew, but was not arrested, and he was released early Monday morning. No arrests have been made so far in the incident, and the investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the Madison Police Department said the alleged victim was scheduled to be interviewed a second time by police on Tuesday (June 22) but that no other information was available on the case at press time. Daniel Radcliffe Thought Justin Bieber Was A Woman

‘I’m so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don’t even try anymore,’ ‘Harry Potter’ star admits. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Radiohead, Hope of the States — these are the kinds of bands Daniel Radcliffe listened to for years to get into character for his scenes in the various “Harry Potter” films. Sometimes at 6 in the morning, he’d pop into the makeup chair and start blasting old-school ska and punk tunes for all to hear. That’s the sort of stuff that gets Radcliffe pumped up to do his job, so it should come as no surprise that he’s rather less familiar with the musical stylings of Justin Bieber. But it is a surprise — and a pretty funny one, at that — to hear who the “Potter” star thought was actually behind hits like “Baby” and “One Time.” “I only heard Justin Bieber for the first time two weeks ago,” Radcliffe told MTV News. “I genuinely thought it was a woman singing. I’d never heard it before. Is it big in England yet?” Well, Bieber’s My World dropped in the U.K. in January and went gold by April, and while the pop star’s upcoming tour will keep him within the confines of North America through 2010, there’s always the possibility that he’ll cross the pond again next year. Just don’t count on Radcliffe to be in attendance when that happens. “I’m so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don’t even try anymore,” he admitted. That’s not to say he’s completely disconnected from everything mainstream. Radcliffe has much respect for the artist who’s produced tunes like “Alejandro” and “Telephone.” “I know who Lady Gaga is,” he said. “I think she’s kind of amazing. She’s really got a voice. My god. Not my kind of music, particularly, but she can really sing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . RPattz’ Role Model

He may be one of the biggest stars on the planet – as well as one of the most sought after men in Hollywood- but when it comes to his future, Robert Pattinson has mass admiration for a boy, a boy wizard that is. RPattz tells us this week that he still looks up to fellow British actor Daniel Radcliffe and would like to follow in the footsteps of the Harry Potter star. The two worked together in two Potter films, Order of the Phoenix and Goblet of Fire , and have been friends ever since…but it’s the way Radcliffe managed to move on from the hugely successful franchise and steer his career in a new direction that Pattinson admires the most. Although the Potter films are what put Radcliffe on the map, he’s still found a way to pull off a number of different roles in recent years, including the 2007 Rod Hardy film December Boys as well as several plays – perhaps most famously appearing nude in Equus during its run in the West End and on Broadway. “I love the mix of stuff he has done in his career,” Rob tells us, “always pushing the boundaries and stuff like that. I also envy his stints on stage – he is a great actor.” RPattz is now thought to have instructed his agent to look for theatre roles for him, in the UK and the US.

Daniel Radcliffe’s PSA For LBGT Help Line Debuts

‘If you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, there’s always a safe place to turn,’ he says in the Trevor Project PSA. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, MTV News was on hand as “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe recorded a public-service announcement for the Trevor Project , a nonprofit organization focused on crisis support and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. “It’s something I’ve always been quite passionate about,” the British actor explained to us after the shoot. “Because I grew up around gay men, it was always a natural thing to me. It was never something I ever gave a second thought to. … And now I am in a position where I can help an amazing thing like the Trevor Project.” Radcliffe’s charitable effort has now debuted online. “If you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, there’s always a safe place to turn,” he says in the PSA. Anyone can call the organization’s number — (866) 4-U-TREVOR — for free and confidential support. “You can talk to someone 24 hours a day,” the actor says. “There are about 160 people in total who work around the clock, and that number is obviously growing over time. It is an incredible thing,” Radcliffe told MTV News. “I was talking to one of the [volunteers], who said, ‘I hate the fact that this needs to exist.’ But it’s so important that it does.” Founded by the filmmakers of an Oscar-winning short film called “Trevor,” the Trevor Project is the leading national organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. The group’s prevention hotline and trained counselors have helped save lives and sought to foster safe, inclusive environments for at-risk youth at homes and schools. Their message — and Radcliffe’s — is a simple and powerful one. As the actor says in the PSA: “Be proud of who you are.” What do you think about Radcliffe’s PSA? Share your thoughts in the comments.
