An American in Paris: 9 Lessons From Moviegoing in the City of Light

Despite the fact that I do not speak French, I moved to Paris a little over two months ago to stay with my girlfriend while she earns a Master’s degree in the language. I started taking classes of my own last month, and remain nowhere near mastering it myself. In the meantime, my main refuge for the English language and American culture has been the movie theater. I’ve since learned that even going to the movies here requires some cultural adaptation. And so, in grand Movieline tradition , I present nine lessons learned thus far about seeing movies in the City of Light.

The Great Harry Potter Liveblog Epilogue: Deathly Hallows Diary

Daniel Radcliffe Thinks ‘Twilight’ Spoof Won’t Bother Robert Pattinson

‘You cannot be in a film as big as either “Potter” or “Twilight” and not have a pretty good sense of humor about yourself,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Simpsons’ cameo. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Daniel Radcliffe has found Robert Pattinson’s rise to fame instructive. “I have no concept of what “Potter” looks like to the rest of the world, because I’m so involved in it,” Radcliffe once told us . “So to watch “Twilight” kind of explode globally had been fascinating.” Radcliffe also finds RPattz — his onetime “Potter” co-star — an appropriate target for some good-natured mockery. Earlier this month, the 21-year-old actor voiced a vampire character on “The Simpsons,” a pasty-faced heartthrob named Edmund directly inspired by Pattinson’s Twi-hunk Edward. Radcliffe hasn’t yet heard from his pal about the episode, but he’s pretty sure Rob didn’t mind the parody. “You cannot be in a film as big as either “Potter” or “Twilight” and not have a pretty good sense of humor about yourself,” Radcliffe told us. In the Halloween-themed episode, young Lisa Simpson falls for Radcliffe’s character after he saves her from an out-of-control school bus, a direct reference to the way in which Edward and Bella connect in “Twilight.” “I love your pallor,” Lisa coos. Radcliffe himself has found himself a “Simpsons” target in the past, with references ranging from a Homer Simpson pet pig named Harry Plopper to a religious-minded character noting Potter and his wizard pals are going to hell. “South Park,” too, has zinged “Potter”: During a send-up of “The Lord of the Rings,” one character mocks a group of kids for dressing up like the Hogwarts crew. Radcliffe thinks it’s all hilarious, and he’s sure RPattz does too. “I find it all so cool and funny and flattering,” he said. “I’m sure Rob’s got a sense of humor about [it]. “I’m sure I’ll be getting a bouquet of flowers,” he added. Daniel Radcliffe Sees Hope After Gay Teen Suicides

‘Deathly Hallows’ star tells MTV News that tragic recent events have given way to ‘more publicity’ and ‘more awareness.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Daniel Radcliffe has long proven to be a dedicated activist when it comes to crisis support and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. He taped a public-service announcement for the Trevor Project and has spoken out on issues ranging from bullying to the importance of acceptance. The 21-year-old actor tells MTV News he’s watched in horror as a wave of gay teen suicides has swept the country, but he sees some cause for hope in the wake of these tragedies. “The attention and the more publicity and the more awareness that can be raised by everybody — it is such a good cause and such an important thing,” the “Harry Potter” star said. Radcliffe has also been pleased to see how messages conveyed by campaigns like “Love is Louder” and “It Gets Better” have cropped up in recent weeks in response to the suicides, transcending matters of sexuality to encompass all of those who’ve experienced persecution. “What’s interesting to me is it has taken on a wider meaning than just the Trevor Project and just people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered,” he explained. “It’s taken on, for everyone who has ever felt victimized or ostracized by the people in their class or in their community, it’s taken on a wider meaning, which I think is amazing.” The Trevor Project was inspired by the story of a gay teen who attempted to take his own life, and Radcliffe is heartened to see similar tragedy-into-opportunity activism springing forth from recent events. “It is, I think, indicative of the spirit of the organization that is the Trevor Project, that out of such tragic circumstances as we’ve seen over the last few months, they are managing to push forward to a brighter solution to this problem,” he said. Do you think initiatives like “It Gets Better” and “Love Is Louder” are helping to spread awareness? Tell us in the comments. Daniel Radcliffe Comes Out: I’m Single!

So much for those Olive Uniacke rumors. Despite being romantically linked to that British party girl, the Harry Potter star tells the latest issue of Out that he’s single. “I was in a relationship with somebody for just about three years, and we broke up just shortly before we hit that mark. But [the breakup] was very amicable. At the moment, I’m just being single and running around chasing girls,” Radcliffe said, laughing. Elsewhere in the interview, Radcliffe makes it clear why he’s the rare child star unaffected by his early fame. How many people his age in general would have the following, mature viewpoints on gay marriage, politics and Hollywood? On Nick Clegg, England’s the Deputy Prime Minister : I’m a very big fan. I’ve actually met him, and I have to say he’s a really, really good man. I don’t agree with everything he says, but of all the party leaders, he was the one I voted for. I thought he was a great speaker and very charismatic and very statesmanlike. And I’m glad that he is still in a prominent position in British politics because I think he could make a great contribution. He comes from absolutely the right place in terms of what his values are. On the growing acceptance of alternative lifestyles : I think that with every generation, people become more open to those ideas and more aware and more educated. But it’s a really, really slow process. If you take any family with parents who are bringing their kids up in a narrow-minded way that includes homophobia, it will take a very profound moment of realization to change those deep-seated views. On recently visiting Hollywood… for the first time : People seem to have a very bizarre perception of me – that I’m a Hollywood actor. I don’t think of myself that way. And when I was out there and telling people it was pretty much my first trip, jaws just hit the floor. They were looking at me like I had two heads. Expect to hear a lot more from Radcliffe as he continues publicity for the November 19 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows .

Daniel Radcliffe To Star In ‘The Woman In Black’

‘Harry Potter’ actor will lead cast of thriller based on Susan Hill’s 1983 ghost story. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Although his “Harry Potter” duties are not quite behind him — “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” parts 1 and 2 open, respectively, in November 2010 and July 2011 — superstar Daniel Radcliffe is already lining up work. His post-Potter plans now include three projects that, like “Potter,” are book adaptations, as it was announced on Monday (July 19) that Radcliffe will lead the cast of “The Woman in Black,” based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel. Radcliffe will also return to Broadway for a revival in spring 2011 of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (from Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book of the same name) and recently signed on to star in a remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” due in 2012 and derived from Erich Maria Remarque’s beloved novel. In “The Woman,” a thriller to be directed by James Watkins (“Eden Lake”), Radcliffe will play a young lawyer named Arthur Kipps who’s dispatched to sort out a recently deceased client’s affairs. He works from her creaky old house and, according to the studio’s press release, soon discovers the nearby town “is held hostage by the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance.” While Radcliffe’s upcoming endeavors have the based-on-a-book aspect in common, his lineup is actually very diverse: The young star seems determined to follow up his “Potter” credits with work that will show him to be a serious actor.
