Cannes: Mid-Way, Haneke’s Amour Charges Ahead With Palme d’Or Momentum

As Cannes hits the half-way mark Monday night with the world premiere of Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love , momentum for the coveted top prize, the Palme d’Or, appears — for now — to be with German-born director Michael Haneke’s Amour ( Love ). Not to say there are not some strong fellow contenders, and the whims of any jury member may run counter, near or parallel to general opinion. But here are some of Palme d’Or’s other big suitors at the mid-way point. Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom received mostly positive accolades by attendees, with one journalist commenting at the press conference on the opening day that “it was a surprisingly good opening film.” Opening titles at Cannes (or other festivals for that matter) are often not the strongest of any lineup, or even in the top tier, though they usually offer up some kind of flash in the form of stars. Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone came out of the gate strong. Its early morning press screening concluded at the Lumière with rounds of applause and chatter among some attendees was that it’s the director’s best film — and his most accessible. But the film has its detractors, though any eventual Palme d’Or winner isn’t without its critics. Also among the big Official Selection competitors this year, Reality by Italian director Matteo Garrone passed muster. Garrone was hailed back in 2008 for the Naples mob feature Gomorrah , receiving the Cannes Grand Prix. His latest has not generated the same emotional responses of that film, but it has achieved sustained reaction. John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-set Lawless has picked up boosters and detractors since its debut Saturday. Some fest-goers have praised the director’s use of violence — it’s raw and quick. One of the many trade print editions here in Cannes declared that Danish director Thomas Vinterberg “is back” with his latest film, Jagten ( The Hunt ). He was a toast of Cannes back in 1998 for The Celebration , part of the Danish Dogme 95 movement he spearheaded along with fellow Dane filmmaker, Lars von Trier. Von Trier has gone on to attend many a Cannes, occasionally putting his foot in his mouth publicly (he awkwardly joked that he ” understood Hitler ” last year) but he consistently makes headlines worldwide. Finally, this may be a bit of a long-shot, but hey, Cannes can be unpredictable. In 2010 Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul smashed through the establishment and grabbed the Palme d’Or for his film about, well… Uncle Boonmee recalling his past lives. So perhaps a bit of a wild card might be Ulrich Seidl’s Paradies: Liebe ( Paradise: Love ). The premise goes something like this: Middle-agish European women travel to Africa seeking the affections of African boys. The movie is essentially about Euro-cougars who head down to Africa to get it on with young African men who earn a living satisfying their yearnings. The promo-material journalists received in their mailboxes at the Palais des Festivals is pretty straightforward: Plumpish naked women; lean, naked African 20-somethings… you get the picture. Check out the clip below of Paradies and some of the other competition films that have screened so far, with accompanying official Cannes Film Festival descriptions: Moonrise Kingdom : Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore — and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way. Amour Georges and Anne are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack. The couple’s bond of love is severely tested. Rust and Bone ( De Rouilles et D’Os ) Ali suddenly finds himself in charge of Sam, his 5-year-old son that he barely knows. Penniless and without friends, he leaves the north of France to seek shelter at his sister’s in Antibes. Even though she and her husband do not have much money, they make a room for them in their garage and take care of Sam. Ali finds work as a bouncer at a local nightclub. After diffusing a fight one evening, he meets Stephanie, a beautiful, self-confident woman. He takes her home and leaves her his number. But she is a princess and he is a poor fellow. Stephanie is a killer whale trainer at the local Marineland. After a terrible accident one day, Ali gets an unexpected phone call from Stephanie. When he sees her again she is crammed into a wheelchair. She has lost both her legs and her dreams. Ali will share genuine moments with her, without pity, and help her to live again… Lawless Lawless is the true story of the infamous Bondurant brothers, bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel The Wettest County In The World , the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave. Jagten ( The Hunt ) Following a tough divorce, 40-year-old Lucas has a new girlfriend, a new job and is in the process of reestablishing his relationship with his teenage son, Marcus. But things go awry. Not a lot. Just a passing remark. A random lie. And as the snow falls and the Christmas lights are lit, the lie spreads like an invisible virus. The shock and mistrust gets out of hand, and the small community suddenly finds itself in a collective state of hysteria, while Lucas fights a lonely fight for his life and dignity. (In Danish) Reality Luciano is a Neapolitan fishmonger who supplements his modest income by pulling off little scams with his wife Maria. A likeable, entertaining guy, Luciano never misses an opportunity to perform for his customers and countless relatives. One day his family urge him to try out for Big Brother . In chasing this dream his perception of reality begins to change. (In Italian) Read more of Movieline’s coverage from Cannes.

Oscar Winner James Marsh Has Harsh Words for 2012 Oscar Doc Snubs

Oscar-winning Man on Wire director James Marsh is clearly unafraid of dropping real talk ; during this month’s Sundance Film Festival he unleashed a tongue-lashing on the Academy for its recent Oscar documentary nominations, which notably did not include Marsh’s own well-received Project Nim . But that’s not the real problem — Marsh laments the entire class of ’12 Academy Awards doc selections, which he claims overlooked the best films of the year and makes the entire branch “look stupid.” Marsh, in Park City with his narrative feature Shadow Dancer , wasn’t terribly precious about Nim ‘s snub in conversation with The Daily Beast ‘s Marlow Stern (via SUNfiltered ). “Putting Nim to one side, if you created a short list of five films that would reflect the best documentary filmmaking of the year, none of those films were nominated.” “I’m a member of the documentary branch so I’m criticizing my own branch here, and it’s really about trying to recognize the best work out there. The system that we have, which I think we’re improving next year, doesn’t seem to do that on a regular basis. Instead, it creates a ‘we look stupid,’ clearly overlooking great ones every year.” Which great docs, then, should have been nominated? Marsh rattled off a laundry list of acclaimed works that many expected to be vying for the Oscar. “I was shocked that film of The Interrupters ’ ambition, quality, and heart didn’t get in…[Its omission from the Top 15 cut ] is a disgrace to our branch, and I don’t mind saying that publicly. And it’s not about taste. I think we can all agree that that is a great piece of documentary filmmaking. Likewise, Senna was a gripping character portrayal of a very interesting man, but also an exciting cinematic experience. Both those films found audiences as well. I was also surprised that Bill Cunningham didn’t make the last, which is a charming and lovely film.” Marsh’s criticism extends to the Oscar documentary selection process, which this year earned a set of revisions . But the branch member also had words for the foreign documentary category, which he says demands attention. “Something is not working here and it’s an annual controversy. I think the system that’s being mooted now is a slight improvement, but [the Best Documentary] category does have a responsibility to getting these films exposure, and we’re also eliminating a lot of foreign documentaries that really should be part of this discussion as well. There was a Danish film called Armadillo two years ago; brilliant film that didn’t get anywhere in that category. We need to try and rectify this.” • Oscar-winning MAN ON WIRE director James Marsh rips Best Doc Oscar noms, talks brilliant new film SHADOW DANCER [SUNfiltered]

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Star Rooney Mara Says Role Was ‘Internal Experience’

Fans of the novel wondered if Mara could live up to Noomi Rapace’s 2009 portrayal of Lisbeth Salander. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rooney Mara Photo: MTV News When Rooney Mara was cast as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s big-screen adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” fans of novelist Stieg Larsson’s best-selling franchise immediately wondered if she could fill the shoes once worn by Noomi Rapace in a 2009 film version of the novels. Even when Mara saw those films, months before she auditioned for the role, she wondered the same thing. “I saw [the Danish movie] before I ever read the books. And I think she’s incredible,” Mara told MTV News at the junket for the film, which opened Tuesday. “I left that movie thinking ‘I can’t do that, I don’t even want to try doing that.’ ” However, a turning point came for Mara when she finally picked up the novels. “And then whenever I read the books I had a different interpretation of the character,” she said. “And then I felt like I had to do it. I couldn’t imagine my life without doing it.” Mara had to physically transform herself into the tatted and pierced hacker from the books, emotionally battered but physically strong. While she could have reached out to Rapace for advice on how to get into that headspace, she opted to go it alone. “You know, I think this is such an internal character and I think playing it is such an, it’s sort of an internal experience,” she explained. “Even though I felt so supported, it’s really something you have to go through on your own. So I don’t think we would have much to talk about ’cause it’s sort of your own quiet experience.” The flick also features Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsg

Michael Lohan: Cooling His Ass in Solitary, Trying to Call Kim Granatelle Collect

Michael Lohan is still cooling his rear end in solitary confinement in a Florida jail after being denied bail last weekend, but he has been allowed to make calls. Collect calls. Which people apparently don’t answer. A recording of a call he attempted to place to one of his many flames – Kim Granatelle, from The Real Housewives of New Jersey – was obtained this morning. Michael Lohan Collect Call She didn’t actually answer the phone and let the call go to her voicemail. Probably wise. Mike is in solitary for his repeated harassment of ex Kate Major. “Kim has spoken with Michael who told her he was in a lot of pain,” said Kim’s friend , Tom Murro, who shared the recording (hopefully with her knowledge). Keep in mind that he’s in pain from jumping off a balcony and landing in a freaking tree while attempting to avoid the cops. Not prime sympathy material. In an ironic twist, Michael and daughter Lindsay Lohan may be in jail at the same time, albeit on different coasts. LiLo must turn herself in by next week. She’ll likely get sprung faster , however, since she has better lawyers. And isn’t charged with injuring or threatening to kill someone, or resisting arrest.

Selena Gomez Granted Extended Restraining Order Against Stalker, LAPD Confirms Threat

While Justin Bieber fights off questions about Mariah Yeater , his unlikely 30-second-stand/baby mama, the singer’s actual girlfriend was in court this week, dealing with a far more serious problem. Gomez had her restraining order extended today against Thomas Brodnicki, the nut job in custody on federal stalking charges for making repeated threats against the singer. As part of this morning’s hearing, Detective Jose Viramontes swore in a declaration that he interviewed Brodnicki, and the man “reiterated that he had many conversations with God about killing Ms. Gomez.” In conclusion, Viramontes stated before a judge that the stalker poses a “credible, serious threat” to Gomez. Brodnicki pled not guilty to felony criminal stalking yesterday. We’ll keep fans apprised of this scary story as more news breaks. Stay safe, Selena. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kate Middleton Pregnant? Denmark Trip Sparks Rumor

Is Kate Middleton pregnant? The Duchess has ignited speculation that she is expecting once again after a visit to a UNICEF distribution center in Copenhagen, Denmark. With Prince William at her side, Kate avoided a certain food product as they sampled items from UNICEF aid packages sent to famine-stricken East African countries. While members of the Danish royal family and William tasted peanut paste, Kate politely refused and reportedly gave her husband of six months a knowing look. Doctors have frequently recommended pregnant women avoid peanuts and byproducts while expecting in order to help prevent allergies in their babies-to-be. What’s more, The Palace itself even “went out of their way to stress that she has no nut allergy whatsoever,” an editor for Britain’s The Sun told ABC News. Whenever William and Kate Middleton welcome their first child, he or she will inherit the throne. The rules were changed to allow a first-born daughter to rule. If they have a girl first, that is. The UK monarchy recently agreed that a first-born girl should be able to ascend the throne even if she has younger brothers. Still, pregnancy speculation or not, Middleton is certainly not displaying any bump just yet; Britain’s Best Dressed was slim and stylish as ever in Denmark. Congratulations … maybe!

REVIEW: Impressive Cast Mills About Listlessly in Dumb, Lumpy 13

Alfred Hitchcock and Cecil B. DeMille might have been able to successfully redo their own movies, but more recent auto-remakes, especially ones that find directors cranking out a U.S. version of their own foreign-language hit, have been a motley crew. The best, like Michael Haneke’s 2007 Funny Games and Takashi Shimizu’s The Grudge , tend to be merely functional enterprises that revisit what worked the first time around with added English-speaking and possibly more famous actors. But others highlight in a painfully clear way the compromises that so often come with working in Hollywood. Ole Bornedal’s wan Nightwatch lost the nasty edge of the Danish original and retained no other distinguishing characteristics, and George Sluizer’s 1993 The Vanishing ditched the finale of his 1988 Spoorloos , an uncompromisingly bleak and great ending, for a studio-friendly happy one that undoes everything toward which the first film built.
