Julie Taymor’s Public Appearances Latest Spider-Man Casualty

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark painmaster Julie Taymor was set for an interview appearance at a New York Times Arts & Leisure weekend next month, but her PR just released the following regret: “With the changes in the ‘Spider-Man’ production schedule, Julie will be deep in rehearsals and will not be available to participate.” The seclusion begins? She should’ve tried this technique when Across the Universe garnered that Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture . So silly! [ NYT ]

‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ Actor Recovering As Show Goes On

Stuntman Christopher Tierney is walking again after suffering multiple broken bones in a fall during a performance last week. By Terri Schwartz “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Marvel Thanks to new safety measures put in place on the set of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” the Broadway musical’s preview shows continued on without incident over the holiday weekend. Several “Spider-Man” performances were canceled last week after stuntman and aerialist Christopher Tierney fell an estimated 20 feet and suffered severe injuries during a show last Monday (December 20). Tierney’s father, Timothy, told The New York Times in a phone interview on Friday that his son walked for the first time since the accident with the help of a walker and a brace. The actor had undergone back surgery on Wednesday to treat three fractured vertebrae he sustained in the fall, and had been expected to remain in the intensive care unit of New York’s Bellevue Hospital Center until Monday (December 27). Christopher Tierney also suffered a hairline fracture in his skull, a broken scapula, a broken bone close to his elbow, four broken ribs and a bruised lung. “My understanding is that Chris is fortunate to be alive,” Timothy explained to The Times . Apparently, the 31-year-old had been falling headfirst from a platform after the safety tether to his harness malfunctioned, but he managed to land on his right side in the basement below the stage of the venue — the Foxwoods Theater in Times Square. Timothy Tierney also spoke with The Associated Press about his son’s injury, and said that the musical’s cast and crew were “eagerly waiting [Chris’s] return. “He just felt so blessed to be part of this whole creative process, and he just cannot wait to get back and perform in the show,” Timothy added. Timothy also said doctors were “cautiously optimistic” that his son would eventually resume his career, but the performer will take a while to heal. “We just feel very blessed that Chris is alive and well, and thank goodness that he knew enough to roll onto his right side and land that way rather than land on his head or back,” Timothy said. “Some people fall from a lesser height than Chris and suffer more damage, even fatal damage.” On Wednesday, meanwhile, “Spider-Man” director Julie Taymor issued a statement and wished Tierney a safe recovery. Preview performances continue at the Foxwoods Theater this week as the days tick closer to the musical’s planned official opening on February 7 . The $65 million production features music written by U2’s Bono and The Edge.

Spider-Man Injury Update: Safety Inspectors Plan to Visit Production

If Broadway had an NFL -like injury report, Julie Taymor’s production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark would be listed as “questionable.” In the wake of Monday night’s latest injury — when a stunt performer fell nearly ten feet into a pit beneath the stage — safety inspectors with the New York State Department of Labor will pay a visit to the production. “We’ll be talking to the production team, checking the harnesses, cables, and other equipment, and trying to determine what happened, and we’ll have more information after that,” said a department spokesman to the Times . Cher Recalls VMA Meeting With Justin Bieber

‘I felt like I should cover up before I take a picture with this baby,’ pop legend says of meeting Bieber while wearing racy ’80s outfit. By Jocelyn Vena Cher at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Cher turned heads at the VMAs back in September when she proudly showed up in the same barely there outfit she wore for her 1989 “If I Could Turn Back Time” video. However, the 64-year-old pop icon admits that she began feeling a bit inappropriately dressed when she was introduced to Justin Bieber that evening. “I thought, ‘I’ll do myself in a decade’, and that [body stocking] was the closest thing I had. And then someone said, ‘Will you take a picture with Justin Bieber,’ and I said, ‘Sure’, not knowing who he was,” she recently recalled to British talk-show host Graham Norton. “And then this child, who came up to here [my chest], and I felt like I should cover up before I take a picture with this baby.” Of course, Bieber wasn’t the only up-and-coming star Cher had the pleasure of meeting that night. She also had the honor of holding Lady Gaga’s meat purse when the latter singer took the stage to accept a Moonman in the now-infamous meat dress. “Well, I wear that every night in Las Vegas, so I just whipped it out,” Cher said recently to MTV News of her scanty VMA getup. “I didn’t have time to think of, like, getting a costume. So I had it and thought it would just be fun to just take off on myself, not knowing I was going to be handling the meat purse. “But, you know, there’s those moments you just remember [forever],” she added. ” ‘Here, Cher, will you hold my meat purse?’ ” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s VMA Night Behind The Scenes At The 2010 VMAs Related Artists Cher Justin Bieber

Another ‘Spider-Man’ Actor Injured On Broadway

Stunt double becomes the fourth castmember to be hurt during pre-production on the problem-plagued play. By Jayson Rodriguez “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark” poster Photo: Marvel Maybe U2’s Bono and The Edge should have considered a theatrical production based on Superman (aka The Man of Steel) rather than Spider-Man. The musicians’ plagued play, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” suffered a new setback on Monday when another actor was injured and taken to the hospital, according to The New York Times . Overall, it’s the fourth castmember to be injured during pre-production. According to the New York Post , the injured actor is Christopher Tierney, a stunt double and aerialist, who was hurt when a cable he was attached to snapped during the final minutes of a preview performance. The Times reports that Tierney fell from a distance of approximately eight to 10 feet. “You heard screams,” an audience member told The Times . “You heard a woman screaming and sobbing.” The Post added that Tierney was admitted to New York’s Bellevue Hospital, and that he was listed in stable condition. Producers recently announced that the official opening of “Spider-Man” would be pushed back once again, this time until February 7, as the crew tinkers with creative changes. Last month, Bono and The Edge spoke to MTV News about the project. “It’s like a graphic novel, but a three-dimensional one,” Bono said of the show. “I’m calling it a pop-up, pop-art opera, because I’m pretentious.” The Edge added, “It is elements of rock and roll, it’s elements of circus, it’s elements of opera, of musical theater. It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we’d do something that hasn’t been done before. And really, we, I think, have managed to do that.”

While Conan O’B rien’s Tuesday evening monologue might have left something to be desired , his parody for Julie Taymor’s Spider-Man musical was just about spot on. Bono Calls ‘Spider-Man’ Musical ‘Pop-Up, Pop-Art Opera’

U2’s The Edge describes Broadway’s ‘Turn Off the Dark’ as ‘something that hasn’t been done before.’ By Rick Marshall Bono Photo: MTV News The budget-busting Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” made its long-awaited debut last weekend to preview audiences, and though Peter Parker’s bow was marred by production miscues and a laundry list of problems , one issue that audiences didn’t seem to have a problem with was the music. According to U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge, who composed the production’s score, that’s because comic books and rock and roll music are a natural fit. “There’s always been a thing with punk rock bands and comics,” Bono told MTV News during an interview last week. “It’s always been there. Even the Ramones, who are also from Queens [New York] like Peter Parker and Mary Jane, they covered the theme to Spider-Man.” “It goes through all, not just rock and roll culture, it’s in modern art,” he continued. “You see it in Roy Lichtenstein’s work, all the pop artists’ work; they all sample from comics.” Featuring high-flying stunts and a multitude of moving set pieces that put the audience in the middle of the action when Spider-Man battles Green Goblin, Carnage and the rest of the show’s villains , “Turn Off the Dark” is treading new ground. In fact, the ambitious uses to which director Julie Taymor has put the project’s record-breaking budget have effectively distanced it from its peers — and caused some confusion when it comes time to describe the show. “It’s like a graphic novel, but a three-dimensional one,” Bono ventured. “I’m calling it a pop-up, pop-art opera, because I’m pretentious. Julie’s calling it what?” “I think she’s calling it a rock-and-roll circus drama,” The Edge answered. “We don’t really know what to call it, because there are so many aspects to it,” he explained. “A great night out. I think that’s what it is.” The Edge acknowledged a similar difficulty in comparing “Turn Off the Dark” with anything that came before it. “It is elements of rock and roll, it’s elements of circus, it’s elements of opera, of musical theater,” he said. “It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we’d do something that hasn’t been done before. And really, we, I think, have managed to do that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Spider-Man Shares ‘Lots Of Similarities’ With U2’s Bono, The Edge

‘Turn Off the Dark’ musical began previews on Broadway this weekend. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by James Montgomery Bono Photo: ShowBizIreland/ Getty Images After multiple delays, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” arrived on the Great White Way Sunday night amid a series of technical snafus that marred the much-hyped musical, which officially opens on January 11. With a reported budget in excess of $65 million and original music by U2’s Bono and The Edge, “Spider-Man” has become the most costly production in Broadway history and had already been delayed due to technical difficulties. On opening night, the musical had to be stopped five times, according to multiple reports , as the crew struggled to pull-off stunt work that had actors suspended in harnesses high in the air. Granted, previews are meant for working out the kinks, but this kind of debut is rather fitting. After all, Peter Parker is a work-in-progress, a character forever trying to reconcile his regular-guy mindset with the abilities and responsibilities of a superhero. The show’s creators, too, share much in common with the web-slinging wonderboy. “There are lots of similarities,” Bono told MTV News earlier this month. “He grew up in Queens. We grew up on the north side of Dublin — fairly humble origins. He falls in love with the girl next door. I married the girl next door. He starts to put on a silly costume … yes,” he trailed off with a sly smile. The comparisons don’t end there. As The Edge explained it, whether you’re an arena-packing rock star or a science nerd bitten by a radioactive spider, you still have to deal with everyday life. “[H]e’s a superhero; he can do loads of stuff, but when he comes home, he’s put back in his place,” the guitarist said. “There’s nothing that he does out in the world that means anything when he’s with his loved ones.” Hearing this, Bono happily declared he’s got more in common with one of Spider-Man’s archenemies than the Spidey himself. “I think Peter Parker’s more The Edge,” he said. “I’m more the Green Goblin.” Said Edge, “You just want to be careful, because you know who wins that fight.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
