Alexander Skarsgård May Holla ‘Tarzan’

In the last couple years, Alexander Skarsgård has taken on roles ranging from controversial Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier’s Melancholia to Peter Berg’s Battleship , but now it looks like the 6′ 4″ heartthrob may be heading to the dense foliage of the tropics. The Swedish-born actor has risen to the top of the contender list to star in David Yates’ Tarzan for Warner Bros., Variety said . The film still is awaiting the official go-ahead from studio brass, but a late summer shoot is expected. Come summer, Skarsgård may don the character of John Clayton III, aka. Tarzan. The story follows the “re-assimilated” Clayton who is asked by H.M. Queen Victoria to team with mercenary George Washington Williams to save the Congo from a warlord who controls a rich diamond mine. Samuel L. Jackson is a possibility to play Williams who is a Civil War vet who wants to repair his name following his involvement in a massacre of Native Americans. Yates officially committed to the project last week, which, given all the colonial subtext, risks running afoul a sensitivity issue or two. Yates directed the last four installments of the Harry Potter franchise. Toronto premieres Disconnect and What Maisie Knew will be Skarsgård’s next starrers. [ Source: Variety ]

Harry Potter Director David Yates on Life After Hogwarts, Ron and Hermione’s Kiss and Harry’s Oscar Chances

This past July was a bittersweet month for Harry Potter fans who flocked to theaters en masse to bid farewell to their beloved J.K. Rowling franchise with David Yates’s final film installment Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 starring, one last time, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. Fortunately for honorary Hogwarts members, J.K. Rowling’s mythical universe is still very much alive at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Parks in Orlando, Florida — where, this weekend, Warner Bros. hosts a junket for the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 home release.

Ari Graynor on Lucky, Her Dramatic Plans, and Being a Funny Lady in Hollywood

Chances are you first laid eyes on former Verge designee Ari Graynor as a gum-snapping party girl in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist , the breakout role that put the 28-year-old actress on Hollywood’s radar back in 2008. Since then, she’s continued to steal scenes in films like Youth in Revolt , Whip It , and Holy Rollers , but as she prepares for another big comedic year ahead of her (plus a run on Broadway), Graynor’s ready to take her next big leap — right into leading lady territory for the first time — in the indie black comedy Lucky .

Harry Potter Screenwriter Steve Kloves Explains Some Deathly Hallows Changes

Judging from the advanced ticket sales and pent-up anticipation, the chances are good that you braved the crowds of costumed Harry Potter fans to see The Deathly Hallows Part 2 at midnight. The tragic, violent and nostalgic finale hits many of the notes Potter fans have been waiting to see onscreen with aplomb (“I open at the close”!), but there are still some pretty hefty changes — especially involving Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape. Why did screenwriter Steve Kloves decide to move the location of Snape’s biggest Hallows moment?

REVIEW: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Guides the Franchise to a Graceful, Moving End

Editor’s note: This review may contain spoilers, particularly for those who haven’t read the books. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was an in-between moment of a movie, a picture that left many fans of this most unusual movie franchise — not to mention the books they’re based on — feeling adrift and forlorn. By necessity, it was only a story half-told: Adapting the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling’s series required splitting the story into two parts. Now, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves guide the story to a graceful and satisfying end. The movie’s final moments are the equivalent of the half-jubilant, half-mournful thrill you get when you close the cover of a book you’ve savored.

Gift Guide: The Harry Potter Films Get Their Own Book

Say what you will about the Harry Potter franchise — and believe me, we have said plenty — but one thing is undeniable: The films look great. Even though directors Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Newell and David Yates have fallen short of successfully translating J.K. Rowling’s dense narrative to the big screen, they’ve certainly captured the imagination of her universe. It’s with that in mind that fans both young and old will delight in Brian Sibley’s ultimate Potter coffee table book: Harry Potter Film Wizardry .

Peter Jackson Reportedly Negotiating To Direct ‘The Hobbit’

Guillermo del Toro stepped down as director just over three weeks ago. By Eric Ditzian Peter Jackson Photo: MTV News In a stunning development in the long-delayed big-screen adaptation of “The Hobbit,” just over three weeks after Guillermo del Toro abandoned directorial duties , Peter Jackson is reportedly negotiating to step into the director’s chair for the two-part production. Deadline.com reports that Jackson is in the midst of negotiations with Warner Bros., New Line and MGM. Jackson, of course, is intimately familiar with Middle-earth, having directed the three installments of the “Lord of the Rings” franchise and winning the Oscar for directing in 2003. He was already co-writing the “Hobbit” screenplays, based on the 1937 book by J.R.R. Tolkien, and shepherding development as a producer. And while rumors surfaced last week that Jackson was being courted to direct as well, that possibility seemed like wishful thinking for Tolkienites. Both “Hobbit” films are said to be gearing up to shoot back-to-back in Jackson’s native New Zealand. MGM has been waging a very public struggle with financial issues, and Deadline repots that the studio is being encouraged to “loosen the purse strings and make the movies happen.” Since del Toro left the production late last month, after two years of pre-production, directors like David Yates (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) and Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) have been rumored to be circling the job. But Jackson and his creative team have reportedly scheduled trips to London and Los Angeles to meet with potential actors, lending further credence to the idea that Jackson will, in fact, take on “Hobbit” directing duties. MTV News’ requests for comment from Jackson’s representative and MGM were not returned as of press time.
