American Student Falls To His Death In Rome According to Mail Online A 21-year-old American student fell to his death from a wall in the Trastevere district of Rome after allegedly going on a pub crawl with friends Monday night. The victim, identified as Indiana native Andrew Keith Carr, was walking on a ledge near the historic bridge Ponte Sisto when he lost his balance and tumbled 50 feet below onto the sidewalk along the River Tiber, according to police. The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Carr, who attended classes at John Cabot University in Rome, had been drinking with friends in the historic Campo dei Fiori square and the Trastevere district before he ended up on the wall along the river at around 2am. The inebriated 21-year-old student got on the ledge about 50 feet above the sidewalk and was pretending to be a tightrope walker when he fell to his death, witnesses told police. Officials say Carr died on impact after breaking his cervical vertebrae. Law enforcement agents who responded to the scene after getting reports of a man falling from the wall questioned the victims’ friends, who were said to be a state of shock. Carr’s death is the third fatality since 2007 involving a foreign national falling to his death along the River Tiber. It is believed that alcohol had played a role in the previous incidents as well. According to the TV station Fox59, Carr, who was a student at Marquette University in Wisconsin, traveled to Rome as part of a study abroad program. The 21-year-old graduate of Greencastle Senor High School in Indiana studied operations and supply chain management in the College of Business Administration, and was frequently on the dean’s list, according to Marquette University President Rev. Scott Pilarz. Carr was also a brother at the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and a member the school’s Quidditch team. ‘His light only graced this campus for a short time, but his memory will live in his family, his friends and our Marquette community forever,’ wrote Pilarz. Last July, a 19-year-old American student was killed along the river after falling off the Bridge of Umberto I following a night of drinking with friends, the Italian-language site Roma Today reported. In 2009, a 20-year-old Australian man fell to his death into the River Tiber under similar circumstances, drawing attention to the ‘pub crawl’ phenomenon popular among tourists and college students, who pay 20-30 euros to drink in several participating establishments.
