D.A.: Conrad Murray a Danger to Society

The L.A. County D.A. is far from pleased that Dr. Conrad Murray wants judge to spring him from jail while he appeals his conviction for involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors assert that Murray, who was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison for his role in in the death of Michael Jackson, is a danger to society. According to court documents, the D.A.’s office says Murray’s shown zero remorse for “reckless and criminal conduct that directly caused Michael Jackson’s death.” In other words, the D.A. says Murray just doesn’t get it, a key point of their argument, as they say he could engage in the same conduct again if he’s set free. The D.A. also claims Murray is a flight risk who is terrified of jail and who no longer has strong ties to California now that his medical license has been revoked. As for Murray’s grounds for appealing the conviction, the D.A. claims they bogus – the judge’s decision to exclude Dr. Arnold Klein’s testimony in particular. Klein gave MJ Demerol shots in the months preceding his death, but the D.A. says no traces of the drug were found in MJ’s body at the time of his death. Thus, there’s no evidence to suggest Murray’s conviction was unfounded, at least in the eyes of the people who put him away … and probably everyone else.

NewJersey.com reports that Whitney Elizabeth Houston has been laid to rest beside her father, John Russell Houston: A gold hearse carrying Whitney Houston’s casket this morning pulled out of Whigham Funeral Home in Newark to head to the star’s burial in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. Just after 11:10 a.m. today, Houston’s hearse followed behind a black Chevy pickup truck with a bed brimming with flowers — light purple roses, pink carnations and white lilies among the arrangement. “We love you, Whitney!” fans called out trotting next to the hearse for about a block as it slowly pulled away. A backseat window displayed a black and white headshot photo of the star. The driver of the hearse appeared to be crying as she played “I will always love you.” Read the full story here. Adele’s 21 Ties Whitney Houston Chart Record

Houston’s Greatest Hits re-enters Billboard albums chart at #6 with only one day of sales after her death. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images Grammy queen Adele will celebrate a career landmark next week when her Album of the Year-winning 21 matches a Billboard 200 chart record. The excitement will come with a tinge of sadness, though, as the remarkable 20th nonconsecutive week at #1 matches the high-water mark set by Whitney Houston ‘s “Bodyguard” soundtrack in 1992-93. In a tragic coincidence, Adele matched that mark in the same week that the “I Will Always Love You” singer was found dead Saturday at age 48 in her Los Angeles hotel room. The death came less than 24 hours before Adele scooped up six Grammys for 21, which will mark a full year on the charts during the next reporting cycle. Adele reached that mark with sales of 237,000 copies of her album, a 95 percent increase over the previous week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The increase pushed the album past the 6.6 million mark in total sales, and experts predict that sales could double yet again next week in the wake of the Grammy triumph. There were plenty of other new faces in the almost all-new top 10, including reunited rock icons Van Halen , whose comeback album with original lead singer David Lee Roth, A Different Kind of Truth, will come in at #2 on sales of 187,000. Right behind was Now That’s What I Call Music! 41 (#3, 142,000), followed by Scars & Stories by The Fray , Paul McCartney ‘s covers album Kisses From the Bottom (#5, 74,000) and Houston’s resurgent Whitney: The Greatest Hits, which, within just one day of her death, climbed to #6 with sales of 64,000. The uptick represents a 10,419 percent gain over the previous week, when it moved just 1,000 copies. Country star Dierks Bentley ‘s Home debuted at #7 (55,000) and the 2012 Grammy Nominees album was at #8 (51,000). Adele’s debut, 19, jumped up 10 places to #9 as sales increased 103 percent to 36,000, and Drake ‘s Take Care rounded out the top 10 with sales of 32,000. Though the true Grammy bump won’t hit until next week, show performers Coldplay got an early boost, with sales of Mylo Xyloto up 105 percent to 28,000 as the album moved 14 spots to #14. It was a harsh second-week comedown for polarizing pinup crooner Lana Del Rey , though, as her debut, Born to Die, suffered a 62 percent drop, plunging 11 spots to #13 on sales of 29,000. Tune in as we celebrate the life of an icon with “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Chaka Khan Questions Why Pre-Grammy Party Was Held After Whitney Houston’s Death [VIDEO]

Read more:

Chaka Khan spoke with CNN’s Piers Morgan about the death of Whitney Houston and questioned why Clive Davis held his pre-Grammy party after Whitney’s death. Chaka called the decision “insanity” and criticized those who let it happen: “I thought that was complete insanity,” Chaka Khan, who sang with Whitney Houston on ‘I’m Every Woman’, explained. “I don’t know what could motivate a person to have a party, in a building where the person whose life he had influenced so enormously, and whose life had been affected by her… I don’t understand how that party went on.” Adding: “A more honest tribute, in my opinion, would have been, maybe, call everybody together, say a prayer, let’s eat dinner and go home.” RELATED: Bobby Brown Dismisses Reports He’s Unwelcome At Whitney Funeral, Says Daughter Is “Doing Better” Aretha Franklin Sings Tribute For Goddaughter Whitney Houston [VIDEO] Whitney Houston Private Funeral Set For Saturday In New Jersey Celebrity Atlantans Remember Former ATL Resident Whitney Houston Whitney Houston May Have Died From Combination Of Xanax & Alcohol [REPORT] Jennifer Hudson Sings Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” At Grammys [VIDEO] New Edition On Whitney Houston’s Death: “We Are Shocked And Saddened” Bobby Declares Love For Whitney On Stage [VIDEO]

‘Walking Dead’ Season Two Is All About ‘Escalation’

Finding Sophia “kicks things off in a big way,” writer Robert Kirkman tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC Killing zombies is no walk in the park. But harder still is killing your fellow man. Former sheriff Rick Grimes knows this all too well: In the most recent episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Nebraska,” our gun-slinging hero put down two hot-blooded humans with two well-placed pistol shots, all because they posed a potential threat to his family and friends. For Rick, killing these two travelers was just another step forward on the bloody path he’s been walking since the series first began — and he’s not the only one embracing his inner darkness. Indeed, the death of poor Sophia in the “Walking Dead” midseason finale was just the start of a shift in momentum toward a deadlier, faster-paced string of episodes, where each and every one of the show’s characters will find themselves tested. “I think the loss of Sophia and looking for Sophia was a big thing that anchored the entire story of the first half of our second season,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about what to look forward to in the rest of season two. “For them to find her in that last episode in such a way, it puts a button on that group of episodes and opens the world up for the next half of the season. It kicks things off in a big way. Finding Sophia is the beginning of an escalation that brings us all the way to the very end of the second season. People are going to begin to see that escalation over the next several episodes.” Shown runner Glen Mazzara agrees with Kirkman, adding that Rick and Hershel are taking the death of Sophia especially hard. “When Hershel sees his family coming out of that barn, he realizes he’s been mistaken about everything he believed,” he told MTV News. “Rick also loses hope. Those two men have to figure out how to lead the group.” But there’s another outlier in the mix: Shane Walsh, the disgruntled ex-cop who’s losing more respect for Rick and becoming increasingly dangerous with each passing day. “Shane doesn’t agree with either one of them, and he wants to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “It really puts pressure on all of the characters in an interpersonal way that really makes the show incredibly exciting, to find out what’s going to happen and who’s going to lead that group.” What did you think of the latest “Walking Dead” episode? Tell us in the comments!

Whitney Houston’s Final Days

While the cause of her death is still unclear, details emerge about how the pop legend spent her last few days. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston and Kelly Price perform in Los Angeles last Thursday Photo: Gabriel Olsen/FilmMagic The circumstances behind Whitney Houston ‘s death are still murky, but details about the legendary singer’s final 72 hours provide a conflicting view of how she spent her last days. Houston died on Saturday at the age of 48, with the most recent reports suggesting that she may have succumbed to a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol , and not as a result of drowning in her hotel bathtub as initially thought. Houston had kept a relatively low profile recently, emerging sporadically in late 2011 to promote her role in the upcoming film, “Sparkle,” in which she plays singer Jordin Sparks’ mother. The remake of a 1976 film about talented young musicians struggling with addiction — a story Houston was sadly familiar with in her own life — is slated for release in August. It was Houston’s first major film role in 16 years and was to be a precursor to her expected role in “Waiting to Exhale 2.” As investigators try to piece together what killed the singer, a clearer picture is emerging of how Houston spent her final days. February 7 : According to TMZ , Houston paid the second of two recent visits to a Beverly Hills doctor, though it has not yet been determined what kind of physician she saw. February 9 : Houston dropped in on a pre-Grammys party in support of her old friend and R&B singer Kelly Price , who told MTV News her old pal seemed just fine. “We were talking about the kids, she was telling me how proud of me she was for doing this record, doing it independently … and singing the truth,” said Price, dismissing rumors that Whitney was partying heavily that night. “I was still at my hotel getting my hair curled and they called me and said, ‘Whitney’s there!’ She beat me to my own party,” said Price, who performed a gospel duet with Houston that night in what turned out to be Whitney’s final stage appearance . “She strolled down the red carpet, she smiled, she interviewed. She went down to the VIP area and she waited for me. … My friend has had some troubles and challenges down throughout the years, but you have to judge a moment by the moment. You can’t just automatically assume that something else happened. … She was happy that night.” February 10 : Though she had no official appearances on the day before her death, witnesses told TMZ that the singer had “partied heavily” with friends at the Beverly Hilton Hotel that night. The boisterous group reportedly drew stares at the hotel bar packed with other Grammy revelers. The site also claimed that Bobbi Kristina, Houston’s 18-year-old daughter with Bobby Brown, allegedly fell asleep in a bathtub in the same hotel less than 24 hours before her mother’s demise. February 11 : Hours before she was reportedly scheduled to attend mentor Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy bash, news broke that Houston was found dead in the bathtub of her Beverly Hilton Hotel room by members of her staff. CPR was attempted and did not work, and the 48-year-old singer was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Police found no evidence of foul play and are currently awaiting toxicology reports. February 12 : LL Cool J leads a night of tributes to Houston at the 54th annual Grammy Awards, culminating in a stirring rendition of Whitney’s signature cover song, “I Will Always Love You,” by Jennifer Hudson . February 13 : posts a report containing photos of what they claim are the room-service trays ordered by Houston just before her death. They show several meals, as well as a Heineken can and an empty champagne glass, which suggests that she may have had several drinks on top of whatever prescription drugs she ingested before getting into the bathtub. (There is no proof, though, from the pictures that Houston alone consumed the drinks.) Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page.
