Executives Yashima White AziLove (U1 Corporate), D’Angela Proctor (TV One), Jay Stevens (Radio One and Reach Media), Kierna Mayo (iONE Digital), Tuwisha Rogers (One Solution and OneX Studios), Dwayne Whitaker (R1 Digital), Kim Bandell (One VIP) and Marvisha Frazier (BHM Digital) converged on a press conference call Thursday, May 11 with news that Radio One, Inc. would now be known as Urban One, Inc. The change was made official on May 5, commemorating the 18th anniversary of its IPO, when the company went public. According to Urban One Vice President of Corporate Communications Yashima White AziLove, per Radio One’s President and Chief Executive Officer Alfred Liggins, the Urban One name accentuates the company’s dedication to black culture. “Well for clarity, Radio One is a legacy name, and one in which we have not departed from. Medical Examiner Deems Student’s Death A suicide Let’s just start by saying that any time a black person is found hanging — it’s suspicious. You may have heard about the case of 20-year-old Kendra Shanice Reid, a sophomore at WSSU in North Carolina who was found hanging at a park on April 28th. The medical examiner recently ruled her death a suicide. According to Winston-Salem Jourdal reports , Reid died from asphyxiation by hanging, according to her death certificate. Her body was found hanging in a wooded area of Finch Park shortly after 9 a.m. on April 28. The public park at 15 Paul Beck Road is just outside of Lexington, where Reid is from. Larry James, the Davidson County medical examiner and the county’s director of emergency services, ruled Reid’s death as a suicide. James said no autopsy was performed as a medical examiner can forego the autopys if death is determinable by an external examination. Some people attempted to link Reid’s death to a video circulating on Facebook, but Reid’s mother Sophia Giles claims those rumors are not true. In response to James’ suicide ruling, the Atlanta chapter of Black Lives Matter has released the following statement: As President of Black Lives Matter Greater Atlanta we are compelled to express our outraged of the senseless death of our dear sister Kendra Shanice Reid 20, who was found hanging in a park. We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn that yet another black body is lifeless. Kendra Reid was a 20 year old sophomore student at Winston-Salem State University in Lexington. She was loved by her community, her school and of course naturally by her family. After learning that Larry James, the county’s medical examiner ruled that the cause of death was a suicide. We know that couldn’t have been any further from the truth. Kendra was full of life, she loved her family, and she was an active member on campus and a member of the WSSU Marching Band who looked forward in graduating. We expect second investigation to be conducted by an private independent examiner, and anticipate a thorough full criminal investigation to be launch by either The Department of Justice’s Office of Civil Rights and The FBI. The black community in Lexington has little to no faith in Lexington Police Chief Mark Sink and his ability to execute a fair and complete investigation. This is why we takes to the streets, organized, mobilized and disrupt business as usual. Black Lives Matter Greater Atlanta we will continue to monitor this case with a close eye In struggle, Sir Maejor Page President Black Lives Matter Greater Atlanta Do you think it’s possible that this young woman was murdered? Do you think the police and medical examiner have done enough to make sure that she was not murdered? Photo Courtesy Black Lives Matter Atlanta

Horror, from Rosemary’s Baby to The Babadook, is uniquely equipped to explore the intimate violence that can accompany pregnancy and motherhood. There’s little blood in The Handmaid’s Tale, but Hulu’s 10-part adaptation, which debuted with three episodes yesterday (April 26), is no less terrifying for it. Like Get Out, the series contributes to this year’s… Read more »

So Lena Dunham has lost a lot of weight recently, right? A considerable amount of weight, really. But the thing is, she doesn’t want any of us to talk about it. “But why?” you might be thinking. “She keeps talking about it herself, what does she expect?” And those are good questions — Lena started losing weight a few months ago, and she’s been open about the reason behind it. In a February interview with Howard Stern, she explained that “Donald Trump became president and I stopped being able to eat food .” “Everyone’s been asking like, ‘What have you been doing?'” she went on. “And I’m like, ‘Try soul-crushing pain and devastation and hopelessness and you, too, will lose weight.'” In January, she called a Glamour cover in which some cellulite was visible on her legs a ” triumph for womankind ,” so she’s clearly comfortable with talking about any and all aspects of her body and her weight. But in a great big long Instagram post she shared yesterday, she insists that she’s not cool with people talking about her weight. We know that because the photo she shared was a screenshot from an article titled “People Need to Stop Talking About Lena Dunham’s Weight.” In her caption, she writes “I feel I’ve made it pretty clear over the years that I don’t give even the tiniest of sh-ts what anyone else feels about my body.” “I’ve gone on red carpets in couture as a size 14. I’ve done sex scenes days after surgery, mottled with scars .” “I’ve accepted that my body is an every-changing organism,” she writes, “not a fixed entity — what goes up must come down and vice versa.” “I smile just as wide no matter my current size because I’m proud of what this body has seen and done and represented. Chronic illness sufferer. Body-shaming vigilante. Sexual assault survivor. Raging hottie. Just like all of YOU.” And this is where it gets weird — she says that “Right now I’m struggling to control my endometriosis through a healthy diet and exercise.” What about Trump though, girl? Why the change in the story? Regardless, Lena continues by saying that her weight loss “isn’t a triumph and it also isn’t some sign I’ve finally given in to the voices of trolls.” “Because my body belongs to ME — at every phase, in every iteration, and whatever I’m doing with it, I’m not handing in my feminist card to anyone.” “I refuse to celebrate these bullsh-t before-and-after-pictures,” she concludes. “Don’t we have infinitely more pressing news to attend to?” … K. It’s just strange because … like, of course her body belongs to her. And as someone who thoroughly enjoys posing nude or nearly nude at every opportunity, she should realize that people are going to notice big changes. Pointing out her weight loss isn’t somehow an anti-feminist move, and it’s not like people are saying “Thank goodness she finally lost some weight, she’s finally a real person now!” Everyone loves a good weight loss before-and-after. It’s human nature. It doesn’t have to mean something terrible, and it doesn’t require an essay. So take that body that belongs to you, Lena, and just chill for a little bit.
