The toll rose from eight overnight with new fatalities including a man hit by a falling tree in North Carolina, a woman in Maryland hit by a falling chimney, and a man killed by a storm-related electrical fire in Connecticut. The death toll from Irene has risen to 12 across five eastern US states, emergency officials said Sunday, as the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm, passing New York City. Elsewhere In The World: Egypt Fires Hundreds Of Dirty Cops For Killing Innocent Citizens During Anti-Mubarak Protests

If you think this means there’s a little more justice in Egypt, we hate to tell you that’s not the case. Over 600 Egyptian police officers were let go today, but it was more to try to get people complaining about the lack of justice for the fallen to shut up. Because really, not much has changed in Egypt since Hosni Mubarak left. The move came on the same day the military council ruling the country announced that parliamentary elections planned for September would be delayed until October or November. The postponement will help new political parties challenge the more experienced Muslim Brotherhood, which was expected to win at least 25% of the seats in parliament. Secular parties had pressed for a delay, fearing that a parliament heavily influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood’s conservative agenda would threaten human rights and religious tolerance. The Islamist organization’s reach may be further diminished by new regulations for choosing the 100-member assembly that will draft a new constitution. The firing of 669 police officers was the biggest reshuffle in the Interior Ministry’s history. It includes 505 brigadier generals, 82 colonels and 37 officers charged in the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the weeks-long revolution that overthrew Mubarak on Feb. 11. The announcement came during the sixth day of demonstrations in Tahrir Square by activists seeking to pressure the interim government to bring Mubarak and members of his regime to justice. The government and military council fear that the return of tents and banners to the square will further disrupt a nation facing labor strikes, a troubled economy and political unrest. “The firings are to gradually dismantle the police state we used to live in,” said Ammar Ali Hassan, head of the Middle East Center for research and political studies. “Protesters have succeeded in forcing security officials and the police into such changes, despite police efforts to keep the system they had before the Jan. 25 revolution.” So far, only one police officer has been found guilty of killing demonstrators last winter. He was sentenced to death. The country is awaiting the trials of Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib Adli, both of whom have been accused in the deaths of protesters. We hope that slow crawl to justice doesn’t cost too many more lives. Source

Mama Cat Found Injured and Tortured, With Her Face Duct-Taped, Inside Clothes Dryer

Cat Found Injured And Tortured Inside Riverside Dryer December 3, 2010 4:23 PM Officer Chris Peck holds an abused and tortured cat found in Riverside. (credit: rivcocha.org.) RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (CBS) — Officials are looking for the person, or persons, responsible for abusing and torturing a 4-year-old cat found Friday with her face duct taped. The cat, who apparently is also a recent mom, was found inside a clothes dryer at a Riverside apartment complex. The feline was discovered early this morning in a laundry room at a building in the 3000 block of Watkins Drive, near UC Riverside, according to Riverside County Department of Animal Services spokesman John Welsh. He said a resident opened a dryer and found the gray tabby inside with duct tape over part of her face. It’s unclear whether the cat was in the dryer while it was running, but the feline’s injuries indicated she was, said Animal Services Sgt. Jason Sanders. “This is an act of a coward,” Sanders said. “Who would do something like this to a defenseless animal?” The cat suffered a punctured left eye and fractured tooth, according to Welsh. Animal Services veterinary technician Eileen Sanders said the tabby is able to drink and eat. “I can’t imagine what this poor thing must have felt going through that ordeal,” Sanders said. “Whoever did this is going to move up and harm other animals, or maybe people.” She feared the mommy cat’s kittens were starving — “if they haven’t already been tortured.” Welsh said Animal Services personnel looked around the apartment complex, but couldn’t find any trace of the kitties. He said a kitten was found in the area a few hours later. Animal control officers weren’t sure whether it belonged to the injured feline, but when the two were introduced, “the little kitty cuddled right up.” Animal control officers encouraged anyone who might be able to help with the investigation to call (951) 358-7387. The cat is not available for adoption yet because of her condition. Welsh said anyone interested in adopting her in the future should e-mail the shelter at shelterinfo@rivcocha.org . added by: EthicalVegan

Arizona ‘death panel’? State Medicaid cuts poised to let some poor patients die

A law in Arizona that cuts Medicaid funding for certain transplant operations is likely to bring about the deaths of poor residents in need of such procedures. Starting in October, a measure passed by the Republican-led state legislature began denying Medicaid funds for organ transplants such as bone-marrow, lung, heart and liver transplants, which can be very expensive and are often performed in life-threatening cases. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/12/arizona-medicaid-cuts-kill-poor-patients-doct… added by: riverratt50

On MSNBC, an Incensed Maddow Howls Over Obama’s Kind Words for George W. Bush

President Barack Obama’s decision to include, in his Tuesday night address from the Oval Office on the end to the “combat mission” in Iraq, a sentence respectful toward former President George W. Bush, appalled MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. Anchor Keith Olbermann recited Obama’s graciousness toward Bush (“It’s well known that he and I disagreed about the war from its outset, yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops or his love of country and commitment to our security”) and then, obviously speaking for himself and the entire MSNBC team, proposed: “There are people who would support President Obama who would howl at hearing that said aloud more than once.” Maddow indeed howled, launching into an indignant rant: To have in this speech, as combat operations are ending, to have…the President not only not addressing the circumstances in which we went to war, but these kind words for President Bush , describing his “commitment to our security” despite the recklessness with which President Bush discarded that national security in favor of this war of choice, which only diminished our security, and is responsible, probably, for the Afghanistan war still going on today, for the deaths of people who have died in Afghanistan after the time after which that war would have ended had we not gone to Iraq — not to mention all of the people who died in Iraq. After finally taking a breath, she continued: To talk about him having a demonstrated “commitment to our security,” having started this war on the terms on which he started it, I mean, it’s beyond restraint from President Obama and anybody in the pro-Iraq war, pro-Bush camp who doesn’t feel like they’ve been given the greatest political present they never deserved, was not listening to this speech. From MSNBC’s Countdown at about 8:24 PM EDT, just after President Obama completed his August 31 speech carried by all the networks: KEITH OLBERMANN: That one sentence in there, “It’s well known,” referring to President Bush, “that he and I disagreed about the war from its outset, yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops or his love of country and commitment to our security.” There are people who would support President Obama who would howl at hearing that said aloud more than once. Once again, contextualize this in terms of the entire administration. RACHEL MADDOW: Yeah, I’m, I think we shouldn’t get past how remarkable it is, how much the proponents of the Iraq war are getting off easy here. I mean, we’ve got Paul Wolfowitz and John Bolten and these guys, like out now offering their suggestions on what ought to happen in Iraq next. Paul Wolfowitz, who said that the war would pay for itself, that we wouldn’t have to spend any money there. And to have in this speech, as combat operations are ending, to have – as you point out Keith – the President not only not addressing the circumstances in which we went to war, but these kind words for President Bush, describing his “commitment to our security” despite the recklessness with which President Bush discarded that national security in favor of this war of choice, which only diminished our security, and is responsible, probably, for the Afghanistan war still going on today, for the deaths of people who have died in Afghanistan after the time after which that war would have ended had we not gone to Iraq — not to mention all of the people who died in Iraq. To talk about him having a demonstrated “commitment to our security,” having started this war on the terms on which he started it, I mean, it’s beyond restraint from President Obama and anybody in the pro-Iraq war, pro-Bush camp who doesn’t feel like they’ve been given the greatest political present they never deserved, was not listening to this speech. OLBERMANN: They won’t.

Leftist AOL Contributor Attacks Pope, Equates Him With Hezbollah Leader

AOL News contributor Paul Wachter launched an inflammatory attack on Pope Benedict XVI in a Thursday post where he also defended recently-fired CNN editor Octavia Nasr for her eulogy of Hezbollah’s spiritual leader. After hinting that the network “overreacted,” Wachter suggested that CNN should also fire “anyone who speaks highly of the pope, who…has contributed to the deaths of millions from AIDS.” Wachter began his commentary, ” Octavia Nasr Firing: Should CNN Also Ax Anyone Who Praises the Pope? ,” by recounting the former Middle Eastern affairs editor’s Tweet where she expressed how she was “sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.. One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot.” He then echoed Nasr’s own synopsis of the Hezbollah spiritual leader: “Fadlallah left a complex legacy. He was staunchly anti-Zionist, a defender of suicide bombings and approved of the suicide attacks on American barracks in Beirut during the United States’ ill-fated intervention in Lebanon during the country’s civil war. But he also championed women’s rights under Islam and spoke out against honor killings.” The writer, who also contributes to left-leaning publication such as New York Time Magazine, The Atlantic, and The Nation, then launched his attack on the Pope, and lumped in Jerry Fallwell for good measure at the end: An argument can be made that CNN has overreacted here , but if Nasr must go, is it too much to ask that the network at least be consistent going forward? Should it, for instance, also fire anyone who speaks highly of the pope, who covered up the clerical rape of young boys and whose anti-contraception proselytization has contributed to the deaths of millions from AIDS? Or anyone at the network who had a kind word for Jerry Fallwell, who said the United States was getting its just deserts with the 9/11 attacks and that the anti-Christ was among us, disguised as a Jewish man? So Wachter believes it’s a matter of established fact that the pontiff “covered up the clerical rape of young boys”? That’s not surprising, given the secular anti-Catholic company he keeps. As for the wild accusation that Benedict contributed to the deaths of millions from AIDS, it was CNN itself that came out on Wachter’s side last year after the Pope stated that condoms “increases the problem” of AIDS during his first trip to Africa. Correspondent Zain Verjee couldn’t seem to find any health “experts” who agreed with the Catholic leader during a March 17, 2009 report . CNN commentator Jack Cafferty condemned the pontiff’s remarks a day later , concluding that “it is past time for the Catholic Church to enter the 21st century, or at least try to drag itself out of the 13th century.” All of this came despite the fact that Dr. Edward Green of Harvard’s AIDS Prevention Research Project cited how the ” the best evidence we have supports the pope’s comments .” In any case, there’s little risk of Wachter’s hypothetical situation of a CNN employee praising the Pope happening any time soon, given the network’s slanted coverage of the priest sex abuse scandal so far during 2010 .

Heroes Finally Canceled

It’s the end of an (initially exciting, then terribly frustrating) era. NBC has decided to completely cut the cord on Heroes — that’s right, no reduced episode order, no miniseries, no wrap-up movie, no nothing. It was quick and brutal, and unlike the deaths on the show itself , this one’s going to stick. [ THR ]
