5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis

See more here:

Source: Pool / Getty T he race to be Florida’s next governor became that much clearer after the first debate between candidates Sunday night. Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum decidedly out-dueled his Republican opponent Ron DeSantis , showing that the Tallahassee mayor had a major advantage on multiple fronts weeks ahead of Election Day next month. DeSantis, a former congressman who left office under a shroud of controversy, has routinely resorted to racist rhetoric during this contentious campaign. And while much of that type of talk was absent from the debate, it became increasingly and painfully obvious that he was not qualified for any elected office, let alone the governorship of Florida. As a result, there were five distinct takeaways from the one-sided debate that needed to be emphasized. 1. Gillum is head and shoulders above DeSantis when it comes to the issues. From the start of the debate, Gillum was all about policy and issues, punctuating his political knowledge with a quip about how he would be “a governor that believes in science,” a slick reference to DeSantis denying the proof behind climate change. Democrat Andrew Gillum on how to deal with industries hurting the environment: “We are going to hold them accountable because this is our air, our water, our beaches, our oceans and there is not a profit margin in this state big enough to take control of that.” #FLGovDebate pic.twitter.com/IrUcjZ1HkT — CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) October 22, 2018 Gillum said he was incredulous that DeSantis was against solar energy, especially considering how Florida is known as the “Sunshine State.” The Tallahassee mayor also showed his masterful knowledge on taxes and Medicaid , two other issues important to Florida voters. Andrew Gillum roasts the Florida GOP’s climate change denial: “What Florida voters need to know is that when they elect me governor they’re gonna have a governor who believes in science, which we haven’t had for quite some time in this state.” #FLGovDebate pic.twitter.com/IxEHsOS1Uw — Adam Best (@adamcbest) October 22, 2018 2. DeSantis is extremely disrespectful. The former congressman who resigned in April in part because of a House ethics complaint against him repeatedly cut off Gillum’s well-articulated debate responses while continuously calling Gillum by his first name. Moderator Jake Tapper announced the two had only met in person moments before the debate began, making it even more noticeable how DeSantis called Gillum “Andrew” while Gillum called DeSantis by more respectful terms, such as “congressman” or “my opponent.” It is notable that @AndrewGillum calls @RepDeSantis “Congressman” and DeSantis calls him “Andrew.” Gillum is still Mayor of Tallahassee, and DeSantis is not even a Congressman anymore. It is clear what his word choice implies. — Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) October 22, 2018 Ron DeSantis calling Andrew Gillum by his first name feels a lot like him trying to call him “boy.” — Clint Smith (@ClintSmithIII) October 22, 2018 Adding insult to injury, DeSantis ducked accusations of racism despite his rhetoric revealing the opposite and repeatedly lied about Gillum’s record, including an embellished and disproven report about Tallahassee’s murder rate. 3. Jake Tapper did a horrible job moderating. The CNN anchor kept cutting off Gillum during his responses while seemingly ignoring how DeSantis made a habit of going well over his 70-second allotted time for his own responses. @jaketapper quit cutting Gillum off. — kimmiesue (@Kimzjourney) October 22, 2018 Damn, @jaketapper ’s bias is showing so clearly in this debate. He’s giving DeSantis more time, let’s him ignore the question and sits silently as DeSantis continuously interrupts Gillum. This debate should put to rest the idea that Tapper is fair and balanced. — A Little Royal (@alittlebitroyal) October 22, 2018 I could be wrong here but it seems like Tapper is giving DeSantis more time and rudely interrupting Gillum more. And I think Gillum is wiping the floor with DeSantis! — Janni Rae (@JanShar44080635) October 22, 2018 To top it off, Tapper didn’t ask a handful of questions that Florida voters may have wanted to hear, including the contentious topic of the state’s Stand Your Ground law , which has come under renewed scrutiny lately and seemingly gives white gun owners a get out of jail free card for shooting Black people in Florida. 4. DeSantis is a Trump loyalist through and through. He blindly lent his loyalty to the president and even said Donald Trump was a role model for kids. Gillum offered the perfect response. This was the moment of the debate for me: @AndrewGillum gives the PERFECT reaction to DeSantis' weird answer about Trump being a role model for kids. Perfect. And hilarious. #FLGovDebate pic.twitter.com/wP608iIxIA — Tommy Christopher (@tommyxtopher) October 22, 2018 5. This campaign isn’t even a contest. Gillum showed he and DeSantis are not operating on an even level in any capacity, but especially politically and intellectually. The Tallahassee mayor outshined him on every topic that came up and showed himself to be a more personable and likable candidate. In addition, Gillum was and has been polling ahead of DeSantis. But, of course, as the entire country knows from 2016, polling means little to nothing until the Election Day results are tallied. Gillum got me sending him money for his campaign and I live in the North East. He's winning this debate and he will win the election. Now monkey that up DeSantis as you're spluttering all over the place. Gillum clearly has you rattled! #FLGovDebate pic.twitter.com/aLpSIQFLai — Dipped in Chocolate (@nativenuyorker_) October 22, 2018 All the more reason to go vote on Nov. 6. Jill Duggar: Latest Photos of Baby Samuel Spark Debate

Jill Duggar’s parenting has become a subject of great interest amongst the Duggar faithful in recent months. Typically, when Jill posts a new photo of her children, the response from fans goes something like this: The first comments consist mainly of fawning praise for her skills as a mother and compliments about how cute her kids are. Then the haters and mom-shamers come out in force. Whether Jill is putting a tortilla on her son’s head as a hat or seeming to favor one child over another, her followers are always quick to let her know they disapprove. Sometimes, their concerns are legitimate (Derick allowing his infant son to play with a plastic water bottle was a recent parenting low-light.), but more often the goal seems to be to shame Jessa into believing she’s an unfit mother. Fortunately, Jill’s latest pic attracted a far more innocuous form of criticism: That’s Samuel with his aunt Johannah Duggar. The pic attracted hundreds of comments within minutes of going live, and for once the debate had nothing to do with Jill’s parenting skills” “He is too cute!! He looks a lot like Jessa to me!” wrote one fan. Believe it or not, this comment sparked a heated debate about which Duggar Samuel most closely resembles. Not only did fans pick apart Samuel’s appearance in an effort to figure out which of his aunts and uncles the baby most closely resembles, they subjected Johannah to the same treatment. “Johannah is so grown up, I think she looks like a mix of Joy-Anna and Jessa,” “Wow, she looks just like Joy at that age!” “She looks just like Josh,” Interestingly, 12-year-old Johannah is now the second-oldest Duggar girl who still lives at home with her parents – but it’s by a pretty sizable margin. (Jana Duggar, 28, is the oldest.) Of course, it wouldn’t be a Duggar social media post if there wasn’t some harsh criticism and pointed questioning, as well. “Where is Israel? Y’all haven’t posted a picture of him in a while….and y’all didn’t take him to Texas with you last week? Hope he’s ok!”  wrote one fan. Another seized the opportunity to bring up the Josh Duggar sex scandals, writing: “Were Jill, Jessa, Jinger, and Joy NOT abused by Josh? YES they were. Multiple times. And religious indoctrination IS abuse. So is blanket training. What you see on tv is all scripted and rehearsed.” Just another day in the life of reality TV’s most controversial family. What Kurse? Jeff Van Gundy Calls Kardashian Haters “Low Rent” As Cavs Win Final’s Game 4

Getty Images Welp: NBA News Caster Jeff Van Gundy Says Be Easy “Kardashian Kurse” Talk An NBA news reporter went off on a tangent about Kardashian haters last night during game 4 of the finals. Kourtney and Khloe giggled court side cheering on “double T” aka Khloe’s boo Tristan Thompson. Van Gundy addressed their “kurse” rumors cameras passed the sister. I’ve noticed a lot, in this series, the debate about why Tristan Thompson has not played well,” the former Knicks and Rockets coach said. “And he hasn’t played well. But the debate about whether his significant other, Khloe Kardashian, and the ‘Kardashian curse,’ is the reason, to me, is downright low-rent. My thing is this: When LeBron James struggled in 2011 in those Finals, did we say it was his significant other that caused him to not succeed, or last year with Steph Curry, was it Steph Curry’s wife, when he didn’t play up to standard? See the clip here. Jeff Van Gundy goes on rant defending Khloe Kardashian during game 4 of the NBA finals pic.twitter.com/SSz828NtV3 — gifdsports (@gifdsports) June 10, 2017

Donald Trump Invited WHO to Tonight’s Debate?!

At 9 pm EST tonight, Donald Trump will square off with Hillary Clinton for the third, and thankfully final, presidential debate. At this point, these things are like dentist appointments: We all agree they’re necessary, but they can be intensely painful experiences. Anyway, Trump got trounced in the first debate , and rather than redeeming himself in round two as his supporters had hoped, he arguably made an even bigger mess of his second clash with Clinton. Have you ever seen a 70-year-old man crash from an epic coke high in a televised town hall setting? We have, and it was ugly. Anyway, with less than three weeks remaining until the election, this may be Trump’s last chance to shift the momentum in his favor. So naturally, the real estate mogul/anthropomorphic Flamin’ Hot Cheeto is pulling out all the stops. Sources say he’s boning up on tonight’s topics, such as the national debt; he’s participating in mock debates; and of course, he’s … inviting President Obama’s half-brother?! Yes, in the sort of move that kind of makes you wonder if he’s participated in some sort of Freaky Friday mind-swap with a petulant toddler, Trump is attempting to psych Hillary out by making Malik Obama his guest of honor. If you’re wondering about the reasoning behind the decision, as far as we can tell, there isn’t any. It’s true that Malik supports Trump, but it’s not like he’s Hillary’s half-brother. We’re sure lots of politicians have relatives who are diametrically opposed to them ideologically. Is that the point Trump is making here? That’s not a rhetorical question; we’re legitimately confused. Not surprisingly, Trump didn’t offer much in the way of insight when he was asked about his decision during a recent press conference: “I look very much forward to meeting and being with Malik,” Trump said, sounding very much like he and the 58-year-old recently arranged a smash session on Tinder. “He gets it far better than his brother.” “I’m excited to be at the debate. Trump can make America great again,” Malik told reporters. Asked about the allegations that Trump sexually assaulted as many as a dozen women, Malik – a Kenyan-born American citizen – trotted out the lame-ass Cosby defense: “I don’t believe them,” Obama said. “Why didn’t they come forward before?” Well, he’s certainly delusional enough to be a Trump supporter! View Slideshow: 19 Things Donald Trump Has Actually Said While Running for President Inviting the President’s half-brother seems like kind of a pointless stunt, but who knows? Maybe the sight of Malik sitting in the crowd will somehow sway every undecided voter in the country and a few million Hillary supporters over to Trump’s side. Then, when Trump gets elected on the strength of the Malik bounce, the whole country can groan a sarcastic, “Thanks, Obama!”
