Howard Stern Debut Doesn’t Boost ‘America’s Got Talent’ Ratings

Despite the hype surrounding Stern’s debut, the show’s ratings are down more than 15 percent from last year. By Gil Kaufman Howard Stern Photo: MTV News Over the past week it has felt like Howard Stern was everywhere. The self-proclaimed “King of All Media” was doing his best to make that title sing in the lead-up to his debut as a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” by doing a rare publicity swing of talk shows and feature interviews. He was excited and he wanted America to be excited, and by the looks of the blanket ads, billboards and promotional stunts, NBC clearly thought that adding the controversial shock jock to the mix on the family-friendly show was going to be big news. Stern did his part
, delivering a warmer, fuzzier version of his outrageous radio persona on Monday night’s two-hour debut and earning almost universal praise
for his playful, personal touch. The ratings, however, were another matter. According to overnight figures from Nielsen, Monday’s show was seen by 10.3 million viewers and earned a 3.6 rating, which was solid, but meant that viewership was down 33 percent (from 15.3 million) and ratings fell 16 percent from last year’s debut (4.3). Stern spent a while on his SiriusXM satellite radio show on Monday tamping down expectations for the first night’s ratings, mixing a cocktail of his own self-deprecation with the cold-hard facts about the competition. According to Entertainment Weekly unlike last year, when “AGT” bowed at the end of May and was paired with the first season of “The Voice,” Monday night’s episode went up against the one-hour season finale of “How I Met Your Mother,” as well as the season finales of “Two and a Half Men” and “Mike & Molly.” Oh, and it also had to contend with the penultimate performance night on “Dancing with the Stars.” While the ratings may not have been the kind of slam-dunk success NBC was hoping for, Stern may have one less potential headache to deal with (for now). After lambasting NBC for hiring Stern for the show
, citing the broadcasting veteran’s more risqu

Azealia Banks Blasts T.I. On Twitter After Radio Show Comments

Young MC calls Tip a ‘snitch’ after he talked to Chicago morning show about her beef with Iggy Azalea. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Nadeska Alexis Azealia Banks Photo: Jim Dyson/ Redferns T.I. has been involved in his fair share of rap beef. From Lil’ Flip to Ludacris to Shawty Lo, Tip has held his own against some pretty serious dudes, but when it comes to the attacks from rookie female MC Azealia Banks , the Trouble Man wants no part of it. Banks took exception when T.I.’s new artist Iggy Azalea landed the 2012 XXL Freshman cover earlier this year. The Harlem rapper had no problem lashing out at Iggy via Twitter , and when Tip defended his new prot

One Direction Vie For Your Battle Of The Boy Bands Vote

Round one is in full swing. Can these Brits go all the way? By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The Battle of the Boy Bands is on, and that means fans can vote now on which of the 32 contenders can rise to the top and win the honor and distinction of being the fan-voted Best Boy Band of All Time. With so many bands in the running, MTV News caught up with the guys from One Direction, who weighed in on their chances of going all the way. But before the guys explain why you should vote for them, we have some facts about the fivesome that may help you decide if they’re your ultimate boy band in the battle: Highest Chart Achievement The guys broke a record with their debut album, Up All Night, when they released it in the U.S. last month. Selling 176,000 copies, the band became the first British group to have their debut album enter the chart at #1. Standout Video Their sunny, beachy clip for “What Makes You Beautiful” is their biggest entry into the world of music videos so far and certainly sets the tone for the five fun-loving lads. The Brits definitely won over American girls with the video’s SoCal vibe. Defining Tune The guys have won the hearts of teen girls across our great land thanks to the feel-good anthem “What Makes You Beautiful,” about loving a girl who doesn’t know how beautiful she really is. Debut Album Up All Night dropped internationally in November 2011, and just like its chart success here in the States, it sold big, debuting at #2 with 138,631 copies in the U.K., which was enough to give it the highest sales for a #2 album in the U.K. for 2011. Biggest Competition Mostly the guys from the Wanted, who are the bad-boy answer to One Direction group of nice guys. So why do One Direction think they should win our Battle of the Boy Bands? “You should vote for us to be the ultimate boy band if you like us,” Liam Payne said, with Louis Tomlinson adding, “If you like our music, then feel free to vote for us as the ultimate boy band. We’re just us.” Harry Styles had this final bit of advice: “We like to have a lot of fun.” Voting in round one of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands is now open and runs until noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates! It spawned singles like “Ha” and the rump-shaking “Back That Azz Up.” Juvie left CMR in 2002 and has largely carried on by himself. He dropped his last solo album, Beast Mode, in 2010 and earlier this year released his Mardi Gras mixtape with DJ Smallz. Now you can’t have a party without DJ Khaled . Since 2006, the Miami representative has been carving his lane as a hitmaker. Nas Delivers Illmatic And ‘The Don’ At SXSW

Nas presents his debut album Illmatic and gives first performance of ‘The Don’ in Austin. By Nadeska Alexis Nas performs at SXSW 2012 Photo: Getty Images A classic never dies and Nas proved that to a packed house during the final night of SXSW, with a performance of his debut album Illmatic at ACL Live at the Moody Theatre. The 20th anniversary of Illmatic ‘s release (April 19, 1994) is quickly approaching, and to commemorate the occasion, VEVO tapped the Queens, New York MC to perform his celebrated album in its entirety. The stage of Austin’s Moody Theater was transformed into an elaborate set designed to replicate the atmosphere of mid-90s Queens. An image of the Queensbridge Houses were set behind a New York City bus stop tagged up with “RIP Ill Will,” (a tribute to Nas’ childhood friend Willie “Ill Will” Graham) and Nasir Jones climbed a flight of stairs, emerging from a subway tunnel to begin his set. The veteran rapper was brief with his words, simply introducing himself, “My name is Nas and tonight I’m bringing you Illmatic ,” before beginning “N.Y. State of Mind.” Legendary producers DJ Premier and Pete Rock, who both had a hand in crafting Illmatic , manned the turntables and joined Nas in reminiscing about his early days. Rapper AZ joined Nas to assist on “Life’s a Bitch,” and the duo diverted from Illmatic momentarily to perform The Firm’s “Phone Tap.” DJ Premier kept the memories coming, teasing Nas about the first time he heard him rapping back in 1991 (“You were rapping some sick, demented s—“), which prompted Nas to perform his verse on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbecue.” In between classics like “The World is Yours,” “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” and “Halftime,” DJ Premier and Pete Rock encouraged crowd participation and kept energy levels high with a short tribute to fallen legends Big L and Guru. But before Nas finished his set, he brought things back to the present, with the first performance of his new single “The Don,” which will appear on his upcoming tenth studio album Life is Good. Romeo Santos, Former Aventura Frontman, Ventures Solo

Bachata star tells MTV News his first solo tour will present ‘nearly every single song on my new album, Formula, Vol. 1 .’ By Christina Garibaldi Romeo Santos Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images For over 15 years, Romeo Santos was the lead singer of the popular bachata group, Aventura . They performed across the globe, won 21 Billboard Latin Music Awards and released six studio albums — but now, Santos is stepping out on his own. The Bronx, New York, singer is returning to his hometown to play three sold-out shows at New York’s famous Madison Square Garden, a venue he sold out numerous times with his former band. “I love performing in New York,” Santos recently told MTV News. “Just something about the energy that the crowd gives you, you give it back, a lot of interaction. I’m looking forward to it.” Yet, this time, it will be a different experience for Santos, since he will be performing on his own. This past November, Santos released his debut solo album, Formula, Vol. 1 , which mixes his famous bachata style with R&B. On Friday (February 10), Santos will kick off his tour at MSG, performing for the first time in over a year. So, what can this sold-out crowd expect? “A lot of energy,” Santos said. “I don’t like to plans things a lot. It’s gonna be a show with a little bit of everything. You’re gonna hear some of my Aventura classics, nearly every single song on my new album, Formula, Vol. 1 , and what I do is I go onstage and I just ride it out. I don’t like planning what am I gonna say to the crowd. Sometimes the show takes a whole different twist.” Santos, who said he’s more anxious than nervous to take the stage without his Aventura bandmates, will be on the road until the end of March, and is humbled by the positive response he’s received from his fans. “I’m really, really grateful. I don’t take anything for granted,” Santos said. “I’ve been working very, very hard. I was very focused on this last production. I wanted it to represent a lot and not abandon my genre, my roots. ” Santos, who teamed up with Usher and Lil Wayne on his debut album, is not ruling out the possibility that these two might join him onstage during his tour. “It’s possible,” he said. “What I normally do is keep it a surprise, but it’s a possibility.” Are you excited to see Romeo Santos in concert? J. Cole’s Grind Earns Him Best New Artist Grammy Nod

Coveted nomination follows #1 debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, and a string of well-received mixtapes. By Nadeska Alexis J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic It’s been a long road to release for J. Cole, who finally dropped his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in September after putting out several mixtapes. Now, the Roc Nation signee is seeing his hard work pay off with a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards . Cole World debuted at #1 in September and has sold more than 500,000 copies to date, making it an impressive freshman LP for a rapper. Make no mistake, though, Jermaine Cole’s success has been a long time in the making. After dropping his mixtape The Come Up in 2007, the North Carolina native polished his craft and released The Warm Up two years later, catching the ear of Jay-Z — specifically with the hit single “Lights Please” — and landing himself a record deal at Roc Nation. Even with Hov as his mentor, however, Jermaine continued to push things along with his own solo efforts. His debut album was hit with a series of delays and he made up for the wait by releasing his late 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights. Between his tapes and a few free-floating singles he’d recorded over the years, Cole had enough material to warrant an opening spot on Rihanna’s Loud Tour in June. When that wrapped, Cole kicked off his Any Given Sunday series in the summer of 2011, which found him releasing new tracks or EPs weekly, leading right into the debut of his first studio album. That persistent grind resulted in noteworthy album sales and a Grammy nomination, which Jay-Z said is well-deserved . “I think it’s great for him, because I’m sure it’s a dream of his. We grew up seeing Michael Jackson, and I’m sure he grew up seeing whatever moment stuck in his mind, so I know it’s great for him to do that,” Hov told MTV News. “I think he’s already won Best New Artist, to me. His journey is what I’m really excited about.” Tune into the Grammys on Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET to see if Cole takes home the award for Best New Artist. His competitors in the category are Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, Bon Iver and the Band Perry. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
