REVIEW: Take This Waltz Hums to the Conflicts of the Heart

Take This Waltz is an unusually kind film about infidelity — not because it sidesteps or shortchanges heartbreak, but because it doesn’t let any one of its characters bear the full burden of blame. That such a thing needs to or should even be assigned in this scenario is beside the point, as the film defers to the vagueries of the human heart and the way we can, despite our better judgment, form a connection with someone that can’t easily be set aside. It’s tempting to glibly connect this clear-eyed empathy with the fact that  Take This Waltz is Canadian and somehow inherently prone to niceness — it’s set in a rosy version of Toronto in which the characters all live in charmingly shabby chic houses and sporadically work in quirky jobs. But what it actually comes from, I think, is that the film is the sophomore feature of actress-turned-director Sarah Polley, who constructs her central love triangle with a determinedly feminine perspective and places all of the choice on her female protagonist Margot, played with typical grace by Michelle Williams. Margot wants anything but to have to make a difficult call, especially one that will result in someone getting hurt. One of the film’s first scenes finds her visiting the living history museum of the Fortress of Louisbourg for work and getting pulled in front of a crowd by costumed, in-character staffers to help with a flogging. “Put your back into it!” yells a man from the crowd when she ineffectually flails at the prisoner, clearly mortified. Later, she ends up sitting next to the heckler on the plane. His name is Daniel (Luke Kirby), and he’s just watched her board in a wheelchair despite not having needed one before, leading her to confess that she pretends at airports because of her terror of missed connections, something born not out of a need not to miss a flight but because, as she puts it, “I’m afraid of wondering if I’ll miss it. I don’t like being in between things.” Margot will, however, spend the movie in between things — between Daniel, who turns out to live across the street (“Shit!” she mutters when she finds out), and Lou (Seth Rogen), the husband of five years with whom she shares a loving if childlike and seemingly no longer passionate relationship. Margot loves Lou — the two tussle like kids and talk adoring about the terrible violence they’re going to do one another (“I’m going to put your spleen through a meat grinder,” Lou sighs) — but she may not be in love with him any longer, and she has an undeniable heated spark with Daniel, an artist who pulls a rickshaw and who watches her with guarded longing. Take This Waltz , which was also written by Polley,   has moments of overdetermined dialogue — the line about airport connections is one, and another finds Margot describing Lou, who’s a cookbook writer, as “a really good cook, if you like chicken.” It’s stronger in its moments of wordless sensuality, from its opening scene in which Margot makes muffins, the camera drifting to her bare feet and then her face as she leans it against the over glass. Daniel offers to take Margot and Lou downtown in his rickshaw when they’re headed out to celebrate their anniversary, and we track her gaze across the muscles of his arms and back, catching his eye in the side-view mirror. The draw of the flesh is not inconsiderable, and  Take This Waltz doesn’t make it so easy as being a kind of passing temptation, an indulgence to be resisted. Margot and Lou have a stable and relatively happy life together — we see them at home and in the company of their friends and family, including Lou’s sister Geraldine (a memorable Sarah Silverman), a recovering alcoholic. It’s a lot to trade for attraction, no matter how significant, but the film feasibly puts the two on a level, leaving Margot to navigate the decision with growing distress as she tries to avoid Daniel, only to go out of her way to run into him, and then flees back to Lou professing her love and fear. Kirby makes his improbable swain just dangerous enough, the embodiment of the promise of the new, while Rogen shows off his dramatic chops as a man who’s obviously never given thought during his time with Margot of what things would be like without her. But the weight of the film rests on Williams, and she finds a poignant and quiet agony in her character as she realizes she’s the only one who can make this decision and must deal with the consequences either way, after time and again trying to push it off or onto other people. It’s a world of bittersweet sophistication from Polley, and one that accepts that, as a stranger reminds Margot at a swim class, “new things get old,” but that doesn’t make them any less appealing.

Axl Rose Robbed After Paris Concert

Thief reportedly stole three gold-and-diamond necklaces valued at $200,000 after frontman wrapped a Guns N’ Roses show. By John Mitchell Axl Rose Photo: Getty Images Axl Rose was robbed of $200,000 in jewelry after a Guns N’ Roses concert in Paris on Tuesday. The thief reportedly made off with three of the legendary frontman’s gold-and-diamond necklaces. A Paris police spokesman said that the theft occurred during a private gathering after the band’s show at the city’s Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy stadium. An investigation into the incident has been opened by police, who report Rose did not appear to be wearing the necklaces when the theft occurred. The theft is the latest news-making incident to plague the band’s European tour. Fans at Guns N’ Roses’ May 31 concert at London’s O2 Arena were angered when security stopped anyone wearing a T-shirt featuring former lead guitarist Slash and asked them to remove it or be denied entry to the venue. “We were told by the management not to allow anyone into the O2 Arena who is wearing a Slash T-shirt, and we are asking anyone who is to remove it, and if they refuse, they will be turned away,” O2 Arena security told British music magazine NME. Rose is the only original member of Guns N’ Roses that remains in the band and he recently received widespread criticism over his decision to not attend the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . He said his decision was “personal” and not “meant to offend, attack or condemn” any of his former bandmates. However, in a letter posted to the band’s Facebook page, Rose declared that his decision to “respectfully decline my induction as a member of Guns N’ Roses” was principally based on who the Hall decided to induct as members of the band. “I feel we’ve been polite, courteous and open to an amicable solution in our efforts to work something out,” Rose wrote. “Taking into consideration the history of Guns N’ Roses, those who plan to attend, along with those the Hall — for reasons of their own — have chosen to include in ‘our’ induction … and how those involved with the Hall have handled things … [it] doesn’t appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected.” (Rose was booed in absentia by attendees at the Rock Hall induction ceremony.) Guns N’ Roses are scheduled to play in Moenchengladbach, Germany, on Friday before returning to France for a series of shows in Strasbourg, Toulouse, Clisson, Montpellier and Toulon as part of their European tour, which runs through July 22. Starz to Kill Off Spartacus After Season 3 [PICS]

Spartacus and its prequel series, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, have been a veritable Bacchanalia of bare boobage. But much like the Roman Empire itself, it isn’t going to last forever. In fact, it’s only going to last one more season. Usually networks let a show go on as long as it’s profitable- sometimes even after the creators have lost interest- but Starz is taking a different approach with Spartacus . It’s Starz’ most-watched show by a wide margin, but still network head Chris Albrecht and series creator Steven DeKnight have announced that after Spartacus: War of the Damned airs next January, they’re going to end the show for good. (DeKnight cites many “bumps in the road” explaining the decision in a recent interview , including the death of original star Andy Whitfield last year.) There’s still plenty to look forward to in Season 3- Kiwi cutie Anna Hutchinson has joined the cast for War of the Damned along with fellow Underbelly alum Jenna Lind , taking over for the departing Viva Bianca and Lucy Lawless . Both actresses have good track records for nudity, as does Spartacus and Starz generally, but still those teats will be bittersweet for fans of the show. Soak up those bath scenes while you can, fellas. Trayvon Martin Autopsy Report Released; Family Slams "Strategic" Leaks in George Zimmerman Case

The attorney for Trayvon Martin’s family claims there have been strategic leaks of records in the case intended to benefit defendant George Zimmerman. Attorney Benjamin Crump said on Wednesday he wants “full transparency” in the case, and called for all the police files on the subject to be released. After several news outlets were given access to a sealed medical examiner’s report on Martin and a police report on Zimmerman, Crump was incensed. “It was leaked for a beneficial purpose, certainly to help George Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense,” he said. “This report needs to be vetted with a keen eye.” “Look at this in the full context. George Zimmerman made the decision to get out of his car, profile Trayvon Martin, pursue Trayvon Martin and confront him.” According to NBC News, the autopsy on the slain 17-year-old says that Martin was killed by a single “penetrating gunshot wound to the chest” Feb. 26. Meanwhile, medical records leaked to ABC News showed Zimmerman likely suffered a broken nose, black eyes and was bleeding from the back of head . His lawyer, Mark O’Mara, said he may seek a dismissal of the second-degree murder charge against his client under Florida’s “stand your ground” law. Zimmerman pleaded not guilty last week and is free on bond.

Tom Gabel Comes Out As Transgender: In Praise Of Bravery

Why the Against Me! singer’s decision to live as a woman is also a genuine act of courage, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Tom Gabel of Against Me! Photo: Getty Images Tom Gabel probably didn’t want to be praised for her decision to come out as transgender ; she just wanted to be comfortable in her own body. But I’m going to praise her anyway. Because when Gabel announced to Rolling Stone on Tuesday that she planned to begin living as a woman — after struggling privately with gender dysphoria for years — it was undoubtedly the most personal thing a major recording artist has ever gone public with, an admission that’s sure to make her the target of cruel insults and petty insinuations (to say nothing about what it might mean for the future of her band, Against Me!). But rather than focus on the close-mindedness of a select few, it is certainly more worthwhile — not to mention important — to laud Gabel for what is, in its purest form, a genuine act of bravery. To be fair, Gabel is not the first musician to come out as transgender. In the 1970s, electronic artist Walter Carlos announced that he, too, suffered from gender dysphoria and underwent sexual reassignment surgery to live life as Wendy Carlos. And just last year, Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo made headlines when he became Mina Caputo. But Gabel’s case is different. Since her earliest days, she has always been a punk pariah , criticized for “selling out” at every step of her career. I got the sense this bothered her on some level (how could it not? ), because when I interviewed Gabel in 2006 for AM!’s major-label debut, New Wave, she definitely made mention of it, saying: “There is no pleasing everybody. … I guarantee our new record will get the same reaction that all our records get. Some will be like ‘It’s awesome,’ and others will be like ‘I absolutely hate it.’ But fast-forward a few years, and the ones who said they hated it are the ones who say they loved it all along.” It will be interesting to see how Against Me!’s fans — and detractors — react when Gabel begins living life as Laura Jane Grace, because they definitely can’t accuse her of selling out anymore. If anything, her decision to begin gender reassignment treatments is the most punk-rock thing imaginable: being true to one’s self, being unafraid to be different, speaking out regardless of the repercussions. These are the tenets the genre (and, for what it’s worth, way of life) were founded on — and, really, what they should still be about today. If you have a problem with Gabel’s decision, you’re probably not a punk at all. In coming out as transgender, Gabel will undoubtedly inspire others to do the same. She is proof that the truth is nothing to be ashamed of, that there is nothing as important — or admirable — as living the life you want to, on your own terms, detractors be damned. And the fact that Gabel’s wife, Heather, will remain by her side as she begins this new chapter is not only equally inspiring, but, in the wake of the passage of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 , which made law that only a “marriage between one man and one woman” would be recognized by the state, it seems even more important. Because truly, is there any greater definition of love — or support, or dedication or unwavering union — than what they share? You can quote biblical verses to deny that fact, but really, you’d be missing the point. For years, fans like me have marveled at Gabel’s pained yet poignant lyrics, with their searing desires to break free and find a place in the world (on the standout New Wave track “The Ocean,” Gabel growled, “And if I could have chosen/ I would have been born a woman”). It turns out, it went much deeper than that: Gabel was at war with her own body, and now, finally, she’s found the courage to make peace with that conflict. It’s beyond admirable; it’s downright brave. Like she told me six years ago, “There is no pleasing everybody.” Ultimately, you’ve got to please yourself. And with courage and conviction, Gabel has done that. No matter how you feel about her new life, you can’t deny that it’s everyone’s basic right to live life on their terms. That goes beyond music or politics or religion: It’s humanity, pure and simple. Related Artists Against Me!

Jonas Brothers Part Ways With Longtime Label Hollywood Records

‘We’re all looking forward to this next chapter,’ Nick Jonas says of the shakeup. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: El Universal The Jonas Brothers have been tweeting with the hashtag #JB2012 lately. And it seems that it now has a whole new meaning as the brothers enter the next chapter of their careers. Nick, Joe and Kevin have confirmed they are leaving Hollywood Records, the Disney-owned label they’ve been with since 2007. In addition to parting ways with Hollywood, the band of brothers has confirmed that they also bought the rights to their master recordings, merchandising and publishing. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter , Nick opened up about the decision to push forward with their music career without the assistance of the label backing them. “This was a decision that we made as a group,” he said. “Naturally, as with any partnership, when you do part ways, there is emotion tied to it. We’ve been blessed to have a lot of success with Hollywood and with Disney, but speaking on behalf of my brothers and our team, we’re all looking forward to this next chapter. We’re ready for that next step as a group, and being able to take our work with us was so important.” As of now, the band is label-less, their manager Johnny Wright confirmed. He added that the guys, who are currently working on their next album, will seek a different type of deal if or when they sign with another company. Their next deal, he added, will give them more control. “This will allow them to chart their own destiny,” he said, adding that given their relationship with Disney had pretty much come to the end of the road, this decision came at the perfect time. “The industry and distribution channels are changing so rapidly, we don’t even know what it means anymore to put out a record,” he explained. “If we wanted to take another deal with a major, it would be different than what we entered into when we signed with Hollywood. We don’t have to become just an artist to the label, we could be a partner or do it ourselves and then come back later on. There’s no plan here — the plan is whatever we decide to make it.” The guys are now focused on the future, which as a group includes their next album . Individually, Nick will wrap up his run in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Broadway this July , and Kevin, with his wife Danielle, will premiere their E! reality show this August . Joe is coming off of a solo album he dropped last year. “In these past three years, my brothers and I have not released a record, but we’ve really come into our own as men,” Nick explained. “And we’ve also lived life, which is an important part to making a record. … I’ve got a studio set-up in my apartment in New York where we can all put down our ideas. It’s a really liberating feeling to just be able to create and write whatever is on our hearts.” The newly free agents’ next album, the follow-up to 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times, should drop by the end of 2012 or early 2013 . Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model Firing: Time for a Boost!

America’s Next Top Model will look very different next season, as long-time contributors Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander were let go from The CW series this week. What was the basis for their ousting? “We reached a point where were feel the show needs a new boost,” head honcho Tyra Banks told Access Hollywood at New York City’s Matrix Awards. “It’s very difficult because I love my guy.” Banks added that she’s not against working with any of the trio down the line (“My partner Ken Mok and I have projects we’re developing, and we’re a family – it doesn’t end,” she said), though it’s unclear if they feel the same way. Barker has said he wasn’t shocked by the decision to not renew his contract, but he also sounded a tad bitter this week when he wished good luck to his eventual replacement . America’s Next Top Model averages around one million viewers and will return for Cycle 19 this fall. [Photo: WENN.com]

China Censors Titanic 3D Nudes for Fear of Audience Participation

Kate Winslet ‘s chest icebergs were restored for Titanic 3D ‘s Indian release, but censors in China are now denying viewers in their country the same, uhm, release. The skinfamous scene where Kate instructs Leonardo DiCaprio to “draw me like one of your French girls” has been cut from Titanic 3D on the orders of China’s State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television, who justified their decision in a statement: “Considering the vivid 3D effects, we fear that viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people’s viewing. To avoid potential conflicts between viewers and out of consideration of building a harmonious ethical social environment, we’ve decided to cut off the nudity scenes.” So if you ever find yourself in a Chinese movie theater, don’t reach out and touch someone. But the real irony here is that the nude scene was included when the original Titanic played Chinese theaters in 1997. 2D boobs? Ok by China. 3D boobs? Not so much. Kourtney Kardashian Explains Pregnant Hair Dyeing: It’s Safe!

Yes, Kourtney Kardashian dyed her hair a couple weeks ago. And, yes, she’s pregnant with a girl . But, no, despite the criticism Kourtney thinks she’s been getting, this decision was not an irresponsible one. She explains why in a new blog entry. I “followed all of the guidelines from my doctor and took the proper precautions necessary,” Kourtney wrote yesterday. “I highlighted my hair, which is considered the safest form of hair color while pregnant, and not to the root, so nothing ever touched my scalp. I also used products that did not contain any ammonia.” In Kourtney’s defense, she has no way of making money aside from coloring her hair, posing in a bikini , fabricating tabloid stories, etc. So she really did make this move with the best interests of her child in mind. Saying she thought it was “time for some fun,” hence the change, Kourtney koncluded: “Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I take caution in all the products I use all the time, but especially when pregnant.” Yes, the one thing anyone who knows anything about Kourtney Kardashian would cite about this reality star is that she takes caution in all the products she uses all the time, especially when pregnant.

Bethenny Frankel and Husband: Not Hoppy Ever After?

Bethenny Frankel has admitted in the past that her marriage isn’t perfect. (Poor Jason Hoppy and his cobweb-filled penis !) But now In Touch Weekly is reporting the relationship is in serious trouble, with Hoppy recently storming out of the pair’s New York City residence and checking in to the Cosmopolitan Hotel. “The fighting has gotten worse,” an insider says of the reality TV-based couple , citing Frankel’s obsession with her looks and her fame as a cause of the contention. “Her energy has been nervous and neurotic. He can’t take it anymore, so he’s been doing everything on his own.” Hoppy is just telling friends he’s living elsewhere temporarily, however, and referencing renovation on the tandem’s $5 million apartment as the reason why. Bethenny and Jason have a 23-month old daughter named Brynn.
