See How Michel Gondry Accepted Sony’s Offer to Direct The Green Hornet

As the wonderful Michel Gondry told Movieline this week , his decision to direct The Green Hornet — a film he had played footsie with since 1997 — was not some desperate money grab, but rather the fruition of a lifelong dream: “I came into Hollywood trying to do this movie.” Was Gondry nervous then when Sony finally offered him the opportunity? The director — who is also quite the proficient sketch artist — was kind enough to draw his feelings on the matter for Metro reporter Ned Ehrbar . Click ahead to see the results.

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Ordered To Stand Trial

Murray faces manslaughter charges in the singer’s death; his medical license has also been suspended. By Kara Warner Dr. Conrad Murray Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Dr. Conrad Murray has been ordered to stand trial for manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson. According to The Associated Press, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor made the decision after a six-day preliminary hearing during which witnesses testified that the Houston cardiologist administered a dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and other sedatives then left the pop star unmonitored. During the course of the hearing, testimony was given that Murray ordered hundreds of bottles of propofol in the months before Jackson’s death. The AP report also cited the fact that the prosecutors concluded their case with testimony from two doctors who said Murray acted outside the standard of medical care when he administered propofol and failed to provide proper care. Other damning testimony included that of Jackson’s bodyguard, who said that on the morning of the singer’s death, it appeared that Murray didn’t know how to administer CPR to his dying patient. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor also granted a request by the California Medical Board to suspend Murray’s license to practice medicine in the state. Pastor said he made the decision in the interest of public safety and ordered Murray to notify every district in which he practices of the decision within 24 hours. Murray has clinics in Houston and Las Vegas. Murray, 57, has pleaded not guilty, and his attorneys have argued that he did not give Jackson anything that should have killed him. Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Related Artists Michael Jackson

Markai Durham, 16 and Pregnant Star, Under Fire Over Abortion Special

MTV somehow managed to upstage the antics of Teen Mom firebrand Amber Portwood this week with a controversial episode of 16 and Pregnant . The special, entitled “No Easy Decision,” chronicled the decision of Markai Durham, 19, to terminate her second pregnancy. Yes. She had an abortion. Durham already has a daughter with her teenage boyfriend, and the couple concluded, sadly, that they simply couldn’t afford to raise another child. 16 19 AND PREGNANT : Markai Durham made the decision to end her second pregnancy. Reactions to this vary widely depending on one’s view of abortion. While Entertainment Weekly called the MTV reality show a ” vivid, unsparing look ” at a “harrowing decision,” Fox News described the special as “controversial.” The N.Y. Post reports that anti-abortion critics railed against the “one-sided portrayal” of the issue, saying “the pro-life issue will simply get tackled.” For her part, Markai Durham is standing by her decision saying, “I get sad from time to time thinking about it, but then everything happens for a reason.” A post on Durham’s Facebook fan page sought to quell negativity as well: “Let me say this again: If you DONT like Markai or her decision. UNLIKE the page, its simple. Markai feels enough pain for making her choice, she DOESNT need to be ridiculed for it. Shes been honest with you when she could have hid it.” “Have some respect or leave! Seriously there are plenty of pages “talking (expletive)” so go there. Dont waste your time, Im just going to ban you.” If nothing else, you have to credit Markai for courageously subjecting herself to the criticism she knew she’d face when this special episode aired. Was their decision not to have a child they couldn’t afford actually responsible? Why not practice safe sex? Is it all unethical? So many questions. No matter where you stand on the pro-life issue, abortions do happen. What do you think? Did MTV tackle the subject fairly? Share your comments.

Lindsay Lohan to Paparazzi: Back Off!

Lindsay Lohan wants the paparazzi to give her some space. This is no joke, or just an offhand comment she made – girl wants a restraining order up in this piece. The star thinks she’s being denied driving privileges because of all the celebrity gossip personnel on her tail and wants her lawyer to put a stop to it ASAP. She’s seeking a restraining order prohibiting them from chasing her. DRIVING MISS CRAZY : She won’t be, thanks to the paps . The L.A. County Probation Department, along with the DMV, have given Lindsay the green light to drive again, as has the Betty Ford clinic where she lives. But just when LiLo was supposed the get the keys to Michael’s Mercedes, Betty Ford decided it was too much of a safety risk to put her behind the wheel. The paparazzi create an unsafe driving situation, officials believe. It’s unclear if a restraining order is viable legally in this case, or if her handlers will reverse their decision, but looks like Linds is stuck in neutral for now.

The Obama Administration Is Setting Aside 187,000 Square Miles in Alaska as a "Critical Habitat" for Our Polar Bears

The Obama administration is setting aside 187,000 square miles in Alaska as a “critical habitat” for polar bears, Greenspace (Los Angeles Times) Obama administration moves to protect polar bear November 24, 2010 | 9:02 pm The Obama administration is setting aside 187,000 square miles in Alaska as a “critical habitat” for polar bears, an action that could restrict future offshore drilling for oil and gas. The total, which includes large areas of sea ice off the Alaska coast, is about 13,000 square miles, or 8.3 million acres, less than in a preliminary plan released last year. Tom Strickland, assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks at the Interior Department, said the designation would help polar bears stave off extinction, recognizing that the greatest threat is the melting of Arctic sea ice caused by climate change. “This critical habitat designation enables us to work with federal partners to ensure their actions within its boundaries do not harm polar bear populations,” Strickland said. “We will continue to work toward comprehensive strategies for the long-term survival of this iconic species.” Designation of crucial habitat does not in itself block economic activity or other development, but requires federal officials to consider whether a proposed action would adversely affect the polar bear's habitat and interfere with its recovery. Nearly 95% of the designated habitat is sea ice in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off Alaska's northern coast. Polar bears spend most of their lives on frozen ocean where they hunt seals, breed and travel. Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell and the state's oil and gas industry had complained that the preliminary plan released last year was too large and dramatically underestimated the potential economic impact. The designation could result in hundreds of millions of dollars in lost economic activity and tax revenue, they said. Parnell said that the state is pleased that existing man-made structures will be exempted from critical habitat considerations. But, he said in a statement, the state is disappointed it was not consulted on other recommendations. “This additional layer of regulatory burden will not only slow job creation and economic growth here and for our nation, but will also slow oil and gas exploration efforts,” Parnell said. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said reductions included in the final rule were mostly due to corrections that more accurately reflect the U.S. border in the Arctic Ocean. Five U.S. Air Force radar sites were exempted from the final rule, as were Native Alaskan communities in Barrow and Kaktovik, Alaska. The Interior Department has declared polar bears “threatened,” or likely to become endangered, citing a dramatic loss of sea ice. Officials face a Dec. 23 deadline to explain why the bears were listed as threatened instead of the more protective “endangered.” Kassie Siegel, a lawyer for the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group that has filed a lawsuit to increase protections for the polar bear, hailed the decision. “Now we need the Obama administration to actually make it mean something so we can write the bear's recovery plan — not its obituary,” she said. Siegel called for a moratorium on oil and gas drilling in bear habitat areas. “An oil spill there would be a catastrophe,” she said. “That seems like an understatement.” The Arctic Slope Regional Corp., which advocates for Alaska native business interests, said in a statement that the decision disproportionately affects Alaska natives and called the designation the “wrong tool” for conserving the polar bear because it does nothing to address climate change. “The burden of the impacts will be felt by the people of the Arctic Slope,” said Tara Sweeney, vice president of external affairs for ASRC, which is based in Barrow, Alaska. “This is a quality-of-life issue for our people.” Kara Moriarty, deputy director of the Alaska Oil and Gas Assn., said the action would hurt oil and gas exploration in Alaska by creating more delays and added costs to projects in what already is a high-cost environment. “The companies and the industry will be required to go through more permitting and create mitigation measures without a direct benefit to the polar bear or oil and gas development,” Moriarty said. “The Fish and Wildlife Service has found over and over again our activities pose no threat to the polar bear.” added by: EthicalVegan
