Malin Akerman Cast in Lindsay Lohan’s Inferno Role

She says the decision to part ways was mutual, while our reports say Lindsay Lohan got fired from Inferno . Regardless, she’s out of the Linda Lovelace biopic. The filmmakers have already replaced her, too. Malin Akerman, best known for roles in Watchmen , Couples Retreat and The Heartbreak Kid , will star instead. “Malin is passionate to take the challenge of the role to task,” says Inferno producer Chris Hanley, “and we feel she has the talent to meet that challenge.” The downside? All the Lindsay Lohan pics to promote the film are wasted! CHOKE ARTIST : A scene from Lindsay Lohan’s bedroom Tuesday night Inferno .

CBS Spins Civilian Court Debacle of Detainee as a Setback for the ‘Government,’ No Mention of Obama

Of the three morning shows on Thursday, only CBS left out any mention of Barack Obama or Attorney General Eric Holder while reporting on the nearly complete acquittal of a former Guantanamo Bay detainee. Early Show news anchor Erica Hill asserted that “the verdict is in for the first Guantanamo detainee to be tried in a civilian court and it is being seen by some as a serious setback for the government. ” Ahmed Ghailani was acquitted on 284 out of 285 charges against him. The President's name never came up on CBS. Over on NBC's Today, the four hour morning program devoted a scant 40 seconds to the topic. But even in that short amount of time, reporter Ann Curry was more definitive than CBS. She at least allowed, “But, the decision could undermine President Obama's plan to put other Guantanamo Bay detainees on trial in civilian courts.” read more

PBS Humorist Andy Borowitz Makes Crack About FNC as ‘Fake News’

On Friday’s Need to Know program on PBS, humorist Andy Borowitz devoted his regular “Next Week’s News” fake news segment to the story that he is supposedly leaving the show after this week. After showing clips of himself from previous episodes, he ended the segment by taking a shot at Fox News Channel as he joked that he will be moving to FNC next week because he so enjoys making up “fake news.” Borowitz: “Now, what’s next for Andy Borowitz? Well, I love doing two minutes of fake news each week, but it’s whetted my appetite to do fake news on a full-time basis. And so, starting next week, I’m moving to my new home: The Fox News Channel.” Below is a complete transcript of the Friday, September 17, “Next Week’s News” segment from PBS’s Need to Know program: JON MEACHAM: It is our sad duty to report that this is the last time we’ll be able to feature the prognostication skills of Andy Borowitz. Andy is moving on from Need to Know. ALISON STEWART: And while there are a few of you who will say it’s not a moment too soon, we speak for your legions of fans who’ll say we’ll miss you on Need to Know. The news of the future will not be the same without you, Andy. ANDY BOROWITZ: Well, thank you so much, Alison and Jon. It’s been great. Well, tonight is, how do I put it, it’s bittersweet for me because this is the last edition of “Next Week’s News.” Now, I’ve had a great time doing this segment, but I’ve been offered a new challenge that, well, I just couldn’t turn it down. More about my decision in a moment. But first, let’s take a look back at some very special moments from “Next Week’s News.” (CLIPS ARE SHOWN WITH THE SONG “GOD LIFT US UP WHERE WE BELONG” PLAYING) BOROWITZ: Good times. Now, what’s next for Andy Borowitz? Well, I love doing two minutes of fake news each week, but it’s whetted my appetite to do fake news on a full-time basis. And so, starting next week, I’m moving to my new home: The Fox News Channel. Alison, Jon? MEACHAM: We’ll be watching. Thanks for everything, Andy.

If Octopuses Are Self-Aware, Are You Less Likely To Eat Them?

Photo via Brian Gratwicke Does the intelligence of an animal factor in on your decision whether or not to eat them? Many people consider pigs to be incredibly intelligent, but they’re still mostly factory farmed in often abhorrent conditions. Scientists are pushing for dolphins and other cetaceans to have non-human person status, complete with inalienable rights. But they’re still hunted every year as a fish stock, as the documentary The Cove has highlighted. And what about cephalopods, a.k.a. octopuses and squid, which are known to be highly intelligent — so… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Justin Bieber Vs. Jonas Brothers Hair-Off: ‘Camp Rock 2’ Stars Vote

‘Well, there are three Jonas Brothers versus one Bieber …,’ co-star Chloe Bridges reasons. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Demi Lovato told us recently that the littlest Jonas brother, Frankie, has swag like Justin Bieber . And as it turns out, the elder Jonas Brothers, namely Joe, Kevin and Nick, and Justin Bieber are all known for something they have in common, and we’re not talking about their bustling careers. We’re referring to their incredibly famous and all-important heads of hair. While Bieber is known for his signature swoop, the brothers Jonas are recognized for their curly mops. This fascinating paralell raised a question: Who has better hair, the Jonas Brothers or Justin Bieber? Their “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” co-stars weighed in on this battle for the ages. “I’m friends with the Jonas Brothers [and] I do have to see them later on, but I know that Bieber has this whole thingy, the swoop thingy,” Jasmine Richards pondered. “I’m gonna have to say Jonas Brothers only ’cause their hair’s great. … But Bieber … can I be in the middle?” Nick Jonas’ “Camp Rock 2” love interest, Chloe Bridges, compared the decision-making process on this issue to choosing a favorite summer sweet. “Well, there are three Jonas Brothers versus one Bieber. So I don’t know,” she explained. “They might win, however, they both have good hair. It’s hard to say. It’s like vanilla versus chocolate — do you like the straight or the wavy? It’s like ice cream flavors.” Anna Maria Perez de Tagle seemed to have the decision locked: “Oh, the Jonases, for sure! I mean, they all have different hairstyles, which is awesome,” she said. “Justin Bieber has the one hairstyle. For sure, the brothers!” Who do you think has better hair, Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos JoBros, Demi Lovato, More At ‘Camp Rock 2’ Premiere

‘The Expendables’ Defeat ‘Vampires’ At Box Office

Stallone’s ’80s-era action sendup continues to dominate, out-earning ‘Vampires Suck’ and other new releases. By Josh Wigler Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Randy Couture in “The Expendables” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Expendables” ($16.5 million) #2 “Vampires Suck” ($12.2 million) #3 “Eat Pray Love” ($12 million) #4 “Lottery Ticket” ($11.1 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($10.1 million) Goofy vampires, lucky lottery winners, killer piranhas, quirky nannies and generous sperm donors all failed to capture box-office gold over the weekend thanks to the staying power of a pack of old action heroes who are apparently not past their prime. Actor, director and screenwriter Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables” remains the top dog at the box office, emerging from its second straight weekend victory with $16.5 million to its name. Featuring an all-star lineup of action icons both new and old, “The Expendables” has earned $64.9 million domestically in just 10 days. Given the film’s success, Stallone and his heavily muscled compadres are already thinking about story ideas for an “Expendables” sequel. The repeated success of “The Expendables” comes in the midst of a particularly crowded session at the box office, with five new wide releases arriving this past weekend. Of these movies, parody flick “Vampires Suck” fared the best, winning a second-place medal worth $12.2 million from Friday through Sunday. The “Twilight” spoof has earned $19 million since opening on Wednesday, clearing almost its entire production budget of $20 million in less than a week. Although it hasn’t quite lived up to its title, “Lottery Ticket” proved a worthwhile investment for Warner Bros. with an $11.1 million fourth-place finish, a solid start towards recouping its reported $17 million production budget. The rest of the newcomers didn’t land quite as well, with “Piranha 3D” scoring the best at sixth place. Emma Thompson’s “Nanny McPhee” sequel arrived in seventh place with $8.3 million, while the romantic comedy “The Switch,” starring Jennifer Anitson and Jason Bateman, fell flat on its face with an $8.1 million eighth-place debut. Upcoming Releases “Takers” and “The Last Exorcism” could give “The Expendables” some trouble, but the “Avatar: Special Edition” re-release could pose even greater problems for every competitor at the box office next weekend. Wyclef Jean Vows To Fight Exclusion From Haitian Presidential Election

‘I cannot in good conscience give up my quest to lead Haiti to the greatness I know we are capable of,’ he said in a statement. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images Wyclef Jean was dealt a harsh setback on Friday when his name was left off a list of potential candidates in the upcoming presidential election in Haiti. But the rapper and humanitarian vowed over the weekend to fight the ruling that declared him ineligible to run in the November 28 election. “After careful consideration and much soul-searching, I have made the decision to contest Haiti’s board of election’s pronouncement stating that I am ineligible to run for the presidency of the country,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday afternoon. “I will be seeking a solution through legal channels, and I urge my countrymen to be patient through this process. ” According to The Associated Press, Clef was slated to go to Haitian court on Monday (August 23) with his lawyers to appeal the decision before the national election dispute office. Jean told the AP on Sunday that he has a document that shows “everything is correct” with his presidential bid and that he and his aides suspect that his exclusion “has everything to do with Haitian politics” and not his legal eligibility for the position. Though the election board did not specify why it rejected the former Fugees leader’s bid, it is presumed it was because he did not meet the country’s residency requirements, which state that a candidate must live in the country for five years. Wyclef, who left Haiti with his family to live in New York at the age of 9, said on CNN that he was running because he felt he had been “drafted by the population” in the wake of the country’s devastating January earthquake. “After January 12 … being out here with my wife and picking up dead bodies from the ground, I felt that because of the youth of Haiti and the population, that this is not even Wyclef saying that ‘I want to be the president of Haiti.’ I feel like I’m being drafted by the population right now to give them a different face, a different voice,” the singer explained. “In the 36 hours since the board’s decision, I have been in constant conversation with my family, friends and advisers, and reading the comments of good people and supporters throughout the Haitian diaspora,” he said in his weekend statement. “I’ve also been closely monitoring the situation on the ground, which I am happy to report has remained peaceful and thoughtful. I, along with my supporters, am deeply disappointed that I have been denied the chance to present my candidacy to Haiti’s voters. I want to continue in my efforts to always keep Haiti top of mind for the world — I don’t want to give anyone the chance to forget the earthquake victims, or my impoverished homeland, rich only in human potential and kindness. “These factors, and more, inspire me now. I am heartened by the world’s focus on Haiti and its needs, as well as the great spirit of the Haitian people — my people, and I cannot in good conscience give up my quest to lead Haiti to the greatness I know in my heart we are capable of reaching. I cannot surrender now, simply because an obstacle has been set before me; now is the time I must stand up and show Haiti — and the world — that my vision of a nation renewed and redeveloped is a vision for which I am willing to fight.” The “If I Was President” singer, whose candidacy was questioned by his former Fugees bandmate Pras , was one of 34 people vying to replace Haitian president Ren

CBS ‘Early Show’: Nearly Five Minutes on Gay Marriage Ruling, One Sentence to Critics

In a report on Friday’s CBS Early Show, correspondent John Blackstone described the fallout of a decision by California Judge Vaughn Walker to lift his stay on gay marriages after overturning Proposition 8: “Inside San Francisco City Hall dozens of same-sex couples lined up for marriage licenses, anticipating their wedding day.” A headline on screen declared: “Save the Date.”   Blackstone explained how gay couples were still upset that the stay would not be lifted until August 18: “Despite a celebration here, these advocates know this may be just a temporary opening. And it turned out it wasn’t opened yet….Among the disappointed couples was one of those who filed the lawsuit challenging California’s ban on same-sex marriage.” Finally taking note of critics of the initial Proposition 8 ruling and the lifting of the stay, Blackstone remarked: “The delay gives opponents time to appeal and a political issue.” The only sound bite of a critic was that of Maggie Gallagher from the National Organization for Marriage: “The extreme nature of this decision is, in fact, going to impact the elections in 2010.” Blackstone then concluded his report this way: “Polls show a majority of Americans oppose same-sex marriage, but in California, where there were 18,000 such marriages two years ago, plenty of wedding plans are now being made for next week.” He made no mention of the majority of Californians also being opposed. Following Blackstone’s report, co-host Harry Smith spoke with liberal George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley about the issue. While Turley described the judge’s decision as “very controversial,” he also made sure to tell viewers where he stood: “I actually support same-sex marriage.” Smith was puzzled by the delay in allowing gay marriage: “Why would the judge leave – well, open the window and then say, ‘okay, we’re going to close the window until next Wednesday’?” Turley replied: “Well, he’s actually doing a very standard and responsible thing….This is a controversial decision. And for the people on the other side of this debate, they should be entitled to make their argument to the court of appeals.” Later, Turley assured his fellow gay marriage supporters that allowing Judge Walker’s decision to be appealed would “add legitimacy to his opinion.”                              Here is a full transcript of the August 13 segment: 7:00AM TEASE ERICA HILL: Save the date. A California judge says same-sex couples will have to wait one more week to get married, allowing for an appeal to move forward. We’ll tell you why this could end up going all the way to the Supreme Court.         7:01AM SEGMENT HARRY SMITH: We begin with the court room battle over California’s same-sex marriage ban, the federal judge that threw that ban out now says that same-sex weddings can be held next week, unless higher courts get involved. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone has the story. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Save the Date; Judge Delays Same-Sex Weddings to Allow Appeal] JOHN BLACKSTONE: Inside San Francisco City Hall dozens of same-sex couples lined up for marriage licenses, anticipating their wedding day. Outside, a crowd gathered. The judge, who last week ruled that California’s ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional, said he is lifting the stay he placed on that decision. Same-sex marriage in California has been on a roller coaster, sometimes legal, sometimes not. Despite a celebration here, these advocates know this may be just a temporary opening. And it turned out it wasn’t opened yet. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: The good news is the stay is lifted. The bad news is the judge has said it’s lifted next Wednesday. CROWD: Aww. BLACKSTONE: Among the disappointed couples was one of those who filed the lawsuit challenging California’s ban on same-sex marriage. JEFF ZARRILLO: We’re hopeful that we will be able to get married and we’ll be able to announce wedding plans as soon as possible. BLACKSTONE: The delay gives opponents time to appeal and a political issue. MAGGIE GALLAGHER [NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MARRIAGE]: The extreme nature of this decision is, in fact, going to impact the elections in 2010. BLACKSTONE: Polls show a majority of Americans oppose same-sex marriage, but in California, where there were 18,000 such marriages two years ago, plenty of wedding plans are now being made for next week. John Blackstone, CBS News, San Francisco. SMITH: And joining us now from Washington is George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley. Good morning, sir. JONATHAN TURLEY: Hi, Harry. SMITH: Why would the judge leave – well, open the window and then say, ‘okay, we’re going to close the window until next Wednesday’? TURLEY: Well, he’s actually doing a very standard and responsible thing. What he’s doing is he’s giving the court of appeals a short period of time to review his decision and decide whether they want to impose a stay. Most federal judges will do that. In fact, if he didn’t do that, it’d be viewed as a little bit odd, if not aggressive towards the court of appeals. What he’s saying is, ‘look, I’m one judge. This is a controversial decision. And for the people on the other side of this debate, they should be entitled to make their argument to the court of appeals.’ SMITH: So what is the likelihood, then, a court of appeals would get involved in this by Wednesday? TURLEY: Well, they’re going to have to. I mean, they’re going to have to take a look at whether they want to impose a stay. And’s it’s going to be tempting for some of those judges. You know, this did overturn a majority of people who voted on the proposition. It’s a very controversial decision. Some judges might be inclined to say, ‘You know what? Let’s go ahead and stay this until other judges have looked at it.’ But what Judge Walker said in this opinion was I don’t see the irreparable harm being done to people by allowing people to get married. SMITH: Right. TURLEY: And he gave a very strong opinion saying, I don’t think this should be stayed by the Ninth Circuit. SMITH: If you are a proponent of same-sex marriage, how should you interpret this? TURLEY: I would encourage my friends on that side – and I actually support same-sex marriage – but I would encourage people on the side of same-sex marriage to understand that they benefit, in some regards, with – from Judge Walker’s move. He’s going to add legitimacy to his opinion. It’s not going to be just one judge. It’s important for this to be reviewed, to satisfy all parties that it’s not just one judge making his own decision, but that it’s going to be other judges making independent decisions of their own. SMITH: Right. Since this thing came down people have said this is likely to end up in the Supreme Court. Do you agree? TURLEY: Well, you know, as you know, you’ve been around a long time, it’s dangerous to predict when the court will accept something. They have actually avoided the same-sex marriage issue in the past, but if any case has a chance, it would be this one. By my count, there seems to be four justices on both sides of this issue, if you’re going to make an early prediction. And as usual, Justice Kennedy’s right in the middle. But Kennedy has been very sympathetic towards gay rights in the past. So, it would be a very interesting issue to go before this court at this time. SMITH: Jonathan Turley, we sure do appreciate your expertise this morning. Thank you very much. TURLEY: Thanks, Harry. SMITH: Alright, you bet.
