Singer emails MTV to say thanks for her ‘Rolling in the Deep’ topping our year-end list. By James Montgomery Adele accepts her award for MTV’s Best Song of 2011 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday (December 14), Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” bested the likes of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Katy Perry’s “Firework” to be named MTV’s Best Song of 2011 . And while that news isn’t exactly shocking to anyone who listened to the radio/ watched TV/ got on the Internet at any point this year, it was a surprise to Adele herself, who emailed MTV News — and included a photo of her kissing her newly won hardware — to express her gratitude and continued amazement at the deeply personal song’s success. “Thank you very much for your support!” she wrote. “It’s overwhelming how many people my life has resonated with. I find it quite hard to wrap my head around it.” To that end, though “Deep” was not only the year’s best-selling song (and her 21 the year’s best-selling album), Adele just can’t seem to comprehend how the tune has come to mean so much to so many. After all, she was writing about her own failed relationship, and though she wanted the song to be the lead single from 21, she never thought it would end up being more than a critic’s fave, let alone MTV’s Song of the Year. “I was pretty insistent it be a single. But I thought it would be more a tastemaker vibe than a hit,” she wrote. “I loved the song the minute I wrote it. The melody and the beat added some conviction to it. I think that’s why people have connected with it.” Though she’s currently recuperating from her recent throat surgery , Adele closed her email by promising big things on the horizon (and sending us holiday well-wishes). There’s talk of a full-blown arena tour and, of course, her expected triumph at February’s Grammys . In fact, if you thought 2011 was huge, just wait until 2012. “Happy holidays,” she wrote. “And see you next year.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Demi tells MTV News why she’s looking forward to Britney’s VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: MTV News Britney Spears is set to get the tribute treatment this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards . At 29, she may be younger than your typical awards show tribute subject, but looking back at Brit’s catalog of great videos and memorable VMA moments , we think she deserves it. As part of the new generation of pop stars following in Britney’s footsteps, Demi Lovato is pretty excited to see how the icon will be honored on Sunday night. “Who isn’t a Britney Spears fan?” Lovato asked, just days before the show goes live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “My favorite Britney Spears song is ‘I Wanna Go,’ ’cause it’s the latest song that she has and I love it.” Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo. Since Spears first took the VMA stage back in 1999, alongside ‘NSYNC, she’s managed to rack up five performances and take home four Moonmen, the first of which was back in 2008, over 11 years after her first appearance on the show. At this year’s show, she’s up for two awards for her video for “Till The World Ends,” Best Pop Video and Best Choreography. Demi has a simpler reason for a Britney tribute: ” ‘Cause she’s the ultimate pop star; nobody can touch her,” Lovato said. “She’s been around for such a long time now and she’s the epitome of pop. So when I think of pop music, I think of her.” While Demi is gushing about Brit’s long pop career, she’s poised to launch the next phase of her own. She will drop her album Unbroken next month. Its lead single, “Skyscraper,” rocketed to the top of the charts when it was released earlier this summer. What are you hoping to see in the Britney Spears tribute? Share your thoughts in the comments below! The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Victoria Justice and Jessie J also heap praise on the breakout star. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage If Adele is ever feeling unloved again, all she has to do is look at the charts and see that she has more than 3 million people who are really feeling her second album, 21. And as she prepares to take the stage at Sunday night’s VMAs , where she’s nominated for seven awards for the smash hit from her breakthrough effort, “Rolling in the Deep,” she can also take heart in knowing that a lot of her fellow divas are crushing on her as well. “She’s a breath of fresh air and she’s so exciting and her music is adding another dimension to radio that’s so important,” Lady Gaga, who is opening the 2011 VMAs , told MTV News. “She’s [also] a truly lovely person — which, to me, is always my favorite.” Whether they’re enamored with her powerful singing voice, her sweet disposition or her stirring live performances, Adele has plenty of other professional admirers. “I’m so proud [of her],” said “Price Tag” singer and pal Jessie J, who will be the house artist at Sunday’s VMAs . “I did go to school with Adele and she’s a good friend of mine, and I’m so proud of her and I’m so excited to see her. I definitely think she should win something this year. She deserves it.” “Victorious” star Victoria Justice is also a big fan. “I’m really excited to see Adele perform. … ‘Rolling in the Deep’ is amazing, but her new album, 21, is just really, really great. I’m excited to see her live. I think she’s so talented, and I’m so happy that she’s become this huge star.” In addition to her multiple nods, Adele will take the stage Sunday night to perform at the VMAs, along with Beyonc
‘She probably gonna kill it,’ Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones predicts. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Adele in her video for “Rolling in the Deep” Photo: Columbia LOS ANGELES — Chiddy Bang won’t be performing at this year’s big show, but the hip-hop breakout duo got a chance to warm things up alongside Swizz Beatz at the Taco Bell Feed the Beat MTV2 VMA concert on Friday at the Music Box. And when asked which act they were most excited to see at Sunday’s Video Music Awards , both group members agreed that Adele tops the list. “Man, we saw Adele at the Brit Awards in the U.K., which is like the British Grammy Awards, and she just made everyone weep with her strong vocals,” the group’s MC, Chiddy, told MTV News’ Sway. The other half of Chiddy, producer Xaphoon Jones, also recalled the February awards show, which featured performances by Tinie Tempah, Cee Lo Green, Rihanna and Adele, who sang “Someone Like You,” the second single from her wildly successful 21 album. “Adele just came out there with just a piano, and she was just making obese, grown British men just cry. It was unbelievable,” Jones said, before speculating on what the British singer might do at the VMAs. “She probably gonna kill it again.” The “Rolling in the Deep” singer’s spirited stage show has provided some unique inspiration for Chiddy Bang. “That’s something I aspire to down the road,” Xaphoon joked, “I just want to make British dudes cry, pretty much.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
