Seriously, something has got to give with these athletes. According to NBC Sports: Dallas Cowboys practice-squad linebacker Jerry Brown was killed in a one-car accident Saturday and teammate Josh Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter. Irving police spokesman John Argumaniz said the accident happened about 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the Dallas suburb. Brent was speeding when the vehicle hit a curb and flipped at least once, Argumaniz said. Argumaniz said the 25-year-old Brown – also Brent’s teammate at the University of Illinois for three seasons – was found unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead at a hospital. The police spokesman said officers conducted a field sobriety test on Brent and arrested him. The charge was upgraded after Brown was pronounced dead. “We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. “At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry’s family and all of those who knew him and loved him.” The team said in a statement that Brent was not on the team flight to Cincinnati, where the Cowboys play the Bengals on Sunday. Argumaniz said Brent was being held without bond. Brent is named as Joshua Price-Brent in the police news release. Argumaniz also said Brent missed a 10 a.m. Saturday booking session with a judge because he was intoxicated. He did not know if Brent had an attorney. The Cowboys signed Brown to their practice squad Oct. 24, but he hasn’t been on the active roster. He was released from the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad Oct. 20. “On behalf of the entire Colts family, our sincerest condolences go out to Jerry’s family and friends, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement. “He was a good teammate that was well liked by all. Today’s tragic news is just another reminder of how fragile life is and how everyday given is a gift.” Brown played for San Antonio in the Arena Football League this year. In 2011, he played for Jacksonville in the AFL and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. Wow. Extremely sad. R.I.P.

Kevin Clash says he is gay and has never tried to hide that, and indeed was involved a relationship with the younger man accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior. The voice of Sesame Street’s beloved Elmo says the accuser was over 18, however, not underage as he has alleged. Clash took a leave of absence Monday. Kevin Clash , who’s performed as Elmo for 27 years, is 52. He admits he had “a relationship with the [now 23-year-old] accuser,” but not an illegal one. “It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was,” he said in a statement. “I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false, defamatory allegation.” Clash also confirmed he is “a gay man” and has “never been ashamed or tried to hide it, but felt [ my relationship with the accuser ] was a personal and private matter.” Sesame Workshop backs up Clash on one count, saying that after a “thorough investigation” they “found the allegation of underage conduct to be unsubstantiated.” Still, the family-oriented organization found that Kevin Clash “exercised poor judgment and violated company policy regarding Internet usage and he was disciplined.” The Workshop added that Clash “insists that the allegation of underage conduct is false and defamatory and he is taking actions to protect his reputation.” As for why he was disciplined by his employer, an email Clash wrote to his accuser reads, “I’m sorry I keep talking about sex with you, its driving me insane.” The puppeteer adds, “I want you to know that I love you and I will never hurt you. I’m here to protect you and make sure your dreams come true.” “I’ll have my assistant book a ticket for you to come to NY and we can talk about this in person.” To clarify, the email was written well after the accuser turned 18 ; the allegation made by the accuser is that the two were intimate before he was 18 . Clash denies any wrongdoing , while admitting a consensual relationship .

This morning’s horrific Colorado multiplex shooting , which left at least 12 attendees of a midnight Dark Knight Rises screening dead, has prompted an ongoing wave of reactions from Hollywood to the White House and beyond. President Barack Obama, who canceled a campaign event scheduled for this evening, issued a statement : “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.” Also from the campaign trail came comments from presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who cited preliminary casualty reports: “Ann and I are deeply saddened by the news of the senseless violence that took the lives of 15 people in Colorado and injured dozens more. We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice.” Meanwhile, Warner Bros. called off its Paris premiere and issued its own statement: “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.” MPAA chief Chris Dodd spoke out as well: “We share the shock and sadness of everyone in the motion picture community at the news of this terrible event. We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones and all those affected by this tragedy.” Reactions on Twitter are those of sustained shock and grief, perhaps best characterized by Michael Moore, whose 2002 documentary Bowling For Columbine explored the issue of gun violence in America (particularly in Colorado): Too sad at the moment to comment. — Michael Moore (@MMFlint) July 20, 2012
I was deeply saddened yesterday to hear of the death of Andrew Sarris , a passionate critic and elegant writer who didn’t just change the landscape of criticism; he changed the way many of us think about movies, challenging, with gentle humor and lots of grace, everything we thought we knew. Sarris was at the vanguard of film criticism in the ’60s and ’70s, along with Pauline Kael and Manny Farber. Over the years, there’s been plenty of fuss made over the Sarris/Kael feud, and movie lovers have often felt pressured to choose one camp or the other. But why? As I’ve said elsewhere, criticism isn’t about consensus – what’s most valuable is a critic’s ability to open your eyes, to make you see things that wouldn’t have occurred to you otherwise. The challenge isn’t just part of the bargain – it’s the whole bargain. And especially as we move further into an era of critic-proof big-budget movies – abetted by newspapers and other publications that happily repackage studio hype even as they’ve decided that professional critics are relics – Sarris’ contributions to the tradition and craft of film criticism have come to seem even more precious. In fact, they’re immeasurable. I knew Andrew only a little, but he and his wife, the extraordinary film critic Molly Haskell, have shown great kindness and generosity toward me. It would have been enough for Andrew Sarris to have been a fine critic. But in the end, it’s how you treat people that matters, and Sarris, who was a teacher as well – he was beloved by his students, and I can only imagine he was wonderful – led by example. Those of us who care about film – who continue to care about its guts and innards as an art form, and about the way it opens us to the wider world – owe a great deal to Andrew Sarris. We won’t see his like again. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
Beyonce’s only job right now is mom to one-month-old baby girl Blue Ivy Carter, but she’s already plotting a return to the recording studio sometime soon. She’s got plenty of new inspirational material, after all. Snger/songwriter Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, who has helped produce big time hits with Adele , Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Beyonce herself (“Halo”), says he’s working with B again, and has already sent the superstar songs about motherhood. “The conversations about her next album literally just started and there [are] two projects happening,” Ryan explained . “All I can say is you kind of feed her the best that you have; Beyonce’s this phenomenal filter and she takes it all in.” He declined to specify what the star’s second project will be, on top of the new album, although a release of remixes for her album 4 has been rumored. For the time being, however, Jay-Z and his wife are “enjoying the time off” at their Scarsdale, N.Y., mansion and $6.85 million TriBeCa loft. Says Tedder: “She has been totally doting on Blue … She’s up whenever the baby’s up!” Aww. If you haven’t seen them, check out the first Blue Ivy Carter photos ! [Photo: WENN.com]
Charlie Sheen will star in Anger Management on FX this summer. In promotion for the sitcom, the network has been using photos of the actor from his most recent gig, Two and a Half Men , a move that resulted this week in a cease and desist letter from CBS, which is demanding Sheen and his production company stop illegally profiting from its images. To this, Sheen has a simple response: GOOD! “I”m thrilled,” the actor tells TMZ , in a way only he can. “It insulates me from having to redundantly see myself in the idiotic bowling shirt. Perhaps if Warner Bros. spent as much time and energy focusing on THEIR show, it wouldn’t be such a steaming pile of ass.” Hmmm… we wonder how he really feels about his former series. UPDATE: A bit later in the day, Sheen called TMZ and said of the man who replaced him: I’m tired of pretending the show doesn’t suck … I’m tired of pretending Ashton doesn’t suck. It’s nothing personal … I just feel bad for him … he’s saddled with such bad writing.
