Demi Lovato is featured on the cover of the latest Self , delving into issues both personal and professional with the magazine in one of the singer’s more revealing interviews. Why did she cut herself back in the day? “There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin – that if I didn’t do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode… I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn’t care what happened. I had no fear.” How is she recovering? “I make time for myself and meditate. I’ve spent the past two years getting over an eating disorder and issues like self-harming and bipolar disorder . I have to work on this stuff every day. I’m reminded of that whenever I eat or feel down.” What is her new perception of beauty? “I used to feel my most beautiful when I was on the red carpet or at events or something where I’m all dolled up. Now I feel like the moment when I feel most beautiful is when I’m able to hang out with a guy without my makeup on or lay on the beach with no makeup on and not even worrying about what my hair or what I look like before I fall asleep.” How does she feel about her fellow X-Factor judges? “Britney is such a sweet girl! We’ve gone through a lot of the same things, so we have a connection. Simon’s so funny and so cool, and LA – he’s really awesome.”

Be warned, future X Facto r hopefuls: Demi Lovato means business. Especially when it comes to drugs. The new judge – whose history with substance abuse is well-known – reportedly stopped a couple of contestants in their rapping tracks this week because their lyrics included references to “bath salts,” a synthetic powder that has been compared to cocaine and crystal meth – and was even rumored to be responsible for zombie attacks in Miami earlier this year. Said an E! News source of the Greensboro audition: “She wasn’t having any of it. She said ‘It’s really irresponsible to be rapping about drugs in front of kids.’ Then they tried to make excuses and Demi said, ‘You talked about bath salts, I heard you.'” Lovato ordered the young rappers to exit the stage, the insider added, and the “rest of the judges completely backed her.” Between this example, and reports that Britney Spears recently walked off the X Factor set because a drag queen tried to pay tribute to her with a rendition of “(You Drive Me) Crazy,” there’s little doubt: Season 2 of the Fox competition will bring the serious drama!

Jessica Simpson, her fiance Eric Johnson and daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson posed for a cute photo July 4, with fireworks as the fitting backdrop. Aww. Two-month-old Maxi, who came into the world on May 1, was proud to help America celebrate its 236th birthday along with her happy parents. Here’s a cute and festive family photo: Jess and Eric sure look proud, but Maxwell manages to upstage them, and the fireworks display with an adorable onesie (fortunately not a bikini onesie ). “Hope everyone had a great 4th!” wrote Simpson, 31, who dressed in an appropriately patriotic ensemble for the holiday (no cleavage this time sadly). She’s clearly taken to parenting in these past two months. “From how I sleep to what I think about,” she said earlier this summer, “Maxwell has definitely taken over everything life has completely changed.”

The Oak Island, N.C., product has “put on 20 lbs. recently,” according to a source because she is pregnant with another baby … supposedly. Allegedly. Hey, at least she’s in a “stable” relationship at this point. Her engagement to Gary Head has already lasted two whole weeks, beating analyst expectations. Is she actually pregnant though? We doubt it. It’s just hearsay. Still, “she’s so irresponsible, it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s pregnant,” says an insider. “But for her to want another child would be crazy, because it doesn’t seem to bother her at all that she doesn’t have custody of [2-year-old son] Jace.” Who said anything about wanting one? Anyway, baby or not, Gary is stoked he gets to see Jenelle Evans nude for the rest of his life, or at least until their engagement ends this summer. “She just broke up with Kieffer [Delp] a week before the engagement and immediately got back with Gary,” the insider explains. “Gary is thrilled, because he had asked her to marry him before and she said no. I guess she changed her mind.” Guess so.

But give the singer about a decade and she’ll be ready to settle down. “I want to be married with kids in 10 years,” Lovato tells the latest issue of Cosmopolitan , which is apparently all about sex and nudity for a change. With what kind of man will Lovato end up? She can’t say for certain, of course, but she does dish on one deal breaker:’ “I know one quality I won’t tolerate: I would never be with a guy who is controlling.” That point of view has to do with the problems has Lovato encountered throughout her teenage years, issues related to depression and eating disorders. She tells Cosmo she felt “relieved” when she was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2010. “I felt relieved when I found out. Like I’m not completely crazy; there’s a medical reason for all of it. It’s a daily thing; you don’t get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own.”
