Barack Obama stands with Ahmed Mohamed. As detailed in the following video, this 14-year old Muslim from Texas was actually detained by the police after he brought a homemade clock into school. Student Arrested For Bringing Homemade Clock to School The teacher believed it to be a bomb and called the authorities. No charges were filed, but the story spurred talk of Islamophobia online, with the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed quickly trending on Twitter and his sisters setting up an account for their sibling at @istandwithahme. It has amassed over 26,000 followers in just a few hours. Among those who have taken notice of the story? A certain Commander-in-Chief. “Cool clock, Ahmed,” Barack Obama wrote on Twitter this afternoon. “Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.” (But isn’t America not great? Don’t we have to make it great again, as Donald Trump says on his hat?) According to The Dallas Morning News, Ahmed made the clock in question out of a circuit board, which was covered by a pencil case that resembled a metal briefcase. When the item started beeping inside his bag at MacArthur High School, administrators called the police and Ahmed was suspended for three days. Ahmed told the newspaper he was “interrogated” by multiple police officers, who took mug shots of him and who even placed him in handcuffs (for “safety” reasons, Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd said in a press conference). “It made me feel like I wasn’t human,” Ahmed told the newspaper. “It made me feel like a criminal.” Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg have expressed support for Mohamed via Twitter, prompting the 14-year old to write in response: “Thank you for your support! I really didn’t think people would care about a Muslim boy. #Thankyouforstandingwithme #IStandWithAhmed. “We can ban together to stop this racial inequality and prevent this from happening again.” View Slideshow: 11 Stars Who Should Run for President

Jeb Bush Says Black Lives Matters Movement Is Just A Slogan Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush dismissed the Black Lives Matter movement and its eponymous chant as a political “slogan” Thursday, and said potential Democratic rival and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley should not have apologized for saying “white lives matter” during a protest last weekend at Netroots Nation. Via MSNBC : “If he believes that white lives matter, which I hope he does, then he shouldn’t apologize to a group that seems to disagree with it,” the Republican presidential candidate told reporters Thursday at a town hall in New Hampshire. The Black Lives Matter movement, sparked largely in response to recent killings of unarmed African-Americans by white police officers, shook up the presidential election this week following a surprise protest at the annual Netroots Nation conference in Phoenix, Arizona. On Saturday, the progressive gathering was interrupted when black activists took the stage during a presidential candidate forum, forcing O’Malley and fellow White House hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont into uncomfortable territory as they struggled to respond to questions on race relations and police violence. O’Malley came under fire for adding “white lives matter, all lives matter” to the protesters’ calls – a statement he has since apologized for. But Bush said Thursday that O’Malley had nothing to be sorry about. “I mean, we’re so uptight and so politically correct now that we apologize for saying ‘lives matter?’” Bush said. “Life is precious, it’s a gift from God. I frankly think that it’s one of the most important values that we have. I know in the political context, it’s a slogan, I guess. And should he have apologized? No.” Earlier in the day, Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – who skipped this year’s Netroots and was, therefore, spared from the ambush – attempted to soar where her rivals had floundered on the issue and spoke at length about racial justice. Addressing a packed church in South Carolina, where an apparent hate crime recently left nine African-American parishioners dead, Clinton said: “It is essential that we all stand up and say loudly and clearly, ‘Yes, black lives matter.’” Discuss… YT

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is not only standing by his controversial remarks on immigration, he says he will win the Latino vote. Rising in GOP primary polls despite hemorrhaging business deals as a result of his comments, Trump was as defiant as ever in a sit-down with NBC. He slammed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton for promoting immigration ideas that “let everybody come in… killers, criminals, drug dealers.” “I have a great relationship with the Mexican people,” Trump said. “I have many people working for me – look at the job in Washington.” “I have many legal immigrants working with me. And many of them come from Mexico. They love me, I love Mexican people .” “And I’ll tell you something,” Trump said of the 2016 presidential election, “if I get the [GOP] nomination, I’ll win the Latino vote.” How? Because of his record creating jobs, he says. “Hillary Clinton is not going to be able to create jobs, I will tell you right now,” he said, turning his attention to a GOP rival as well. “Neither is Jeb Bush going to be able to create jobs.” “I will create jobs and the Latinos will have jobs that they don’t have right now,” and as a result, be boldly claims, ” I will win that vote .” The former First Lady, he adds, is “weak on immigration. I might be divisive on immigration, but she’s weak, which is far worse.” Trump warned that her policies would increase crime, and labeled Clinton “the worst secretary of state in the history of our nation.” “The world blew up around us,” he said of her tenure. The 69-year-old mogul said he has “nothing to apologize for” since he announced he is running for president earlier this summer. Doubling down on a previous point, he urged an “impenetrable” wall between the U.S. and Mexico and to “make” Mexico pay for it. “Mexico’s making a fortune off the United States,” he said. “I would get them to pay for the wall. Believe me.” Trump, who has been fired by Macy’s and NBC among others, dismissed the idea that his business has been hurt by his campaign. “This is too important. Yeah, I’m losing some contracts. Who cares?” he said. “They’re weak and they want to be politically correct.” “Some of them have already apologized to me.” Trump was also asked about a Washington Post report about illegal immigrants working on his aforementioned hotel project in D.C. “We have a very strong system,” he replied, saying that the paper did not reference any of the alleged undocumented workers by name. “I have a contractor, one of the biggest in the nation. So far, they’re doing a very good job. We have a very strong verification system.”
