Guillermo Del Toro Says ‘Hobbit’ Departure Was ‘Extremely Painful’

‘I believe these films will happen,’ filmmaker says in message to fans. By Josh Wigler Guillermo Del Toro Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage In an open letter thanking his supporters (and even “those that never did convert or believed”), Guillermo Del Toro has issued his final farewell to the world of Middle-Earth and further explained his departure from “The Hobbit.” The director announced his withdrawal from the New Zealand-based two-part “Lord of the Rings” prequel early last week, citing the “ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming” as the main reason for his decision. While Del Toro didn’t clarify the details surrounding these delays, his latest message, posted as a reply to a comment from “Pasi” on the TheOneRing.net forum, gives an overview of the emotions driving his departure from the project. “My commitment to the project demanded enormous sacrifices both in personal and professional terms, the consequences of which will ripple for years. I relocated my entire life and family to New Zealand and first came on board in 2008,” he said. “So, while the cited delays, contractual complexities or obstacles cannot be attributed to a single event or entity, you will simply have to believe that they were of sufficient complexity and severity to lead to the current situation. Trust me on this, Pasi — leaving [New Zealand] and the ‘Hobbit’ crew is extremely painful.” Although Del Toro will no longer direct “The Hobbit,” he remains onboard as one of the film’s many writers. Additionally, several of Del Toro’s designs, story boards and animatics that “accurately [represent] my ideas” will remain in place for the films. Producer Peter Jackson’s manager said last week that though Jackson has no intention of taking the director’s chair, he remains committed to the franchise. “I believe these films will happen,” Del Toro stated. “Perhaps even sooner than we may anticipate we will look at the finished film and then — I will tear up whenever I recognize a set or a creature or a quirk created under my supervision. Everyone on [the One Ring message] boards will get two movies. Me? I will be watching filmic family albums. Katherine Heigl Feels ‘Horrible’ For Missing ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Finale

‘I really miss that relationship,’ she tells MTV News of onscreen romance with Justin Chambers. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Katherine Heigl Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, Katherine Heigl’s departure from “Grey’s Anatomy” caused quite a stir. The rumor mill was rife with gossip regarding the actress’s diva-like demands on set, months before her departure (Heigl’s last appearance as Izzy was January 21). But now that Heigl has officially left the program to focus on being a mom to her adopted daughter, she has gone to great lengths to right any wrongs (i.e. the recent Entertainment Weekly cover story titled “I’m Sorry”). MTV News recently caught up with the actress (while chatting about her upcoming romantic comedy “Killers”) and discovered that the 31-year-old has nothing but warm feelings for her onetime castmates. And because Heigl had not yet seen the complicated medical drama’s season finale, our own Josh Horowitz attempted — via a “creative interpretation” courtesy of Wikipedia — to summarize the detailed plot and bring the actress up to speed so she could comment. Midway through Josh’s delivery of the details, Heigl interrupted when he mentioned that a main character was pregnant. “I’m sorry, wait,” Heigl said and held up a hand to stop the recap for a moment. “A pregnant who? Meredith is pregnant?” she said, totally surprised. “You’ve made me feel horrible [for not watching yet]. “I’m going to have to watch this now. I have to see [Alex] call for [Izzy] and her never come. … I really miss that relationship,” Heigl said of her former onscreen romance with Alex (played by Justin Chambers). “Justin Chambers is one of the most amazing men and certainly a spectacular actor. I feel oddly attached to him and the character and my character being together. It just seems what’s supposed to be, but you can’t have it all.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Killers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Pussycat Dolls’ New Members Revealed

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ alum Kherington Payne and ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ runner-up Rino Nakasone-Razalan join the group. By Jocelyn Vena Kherington Payne Photo: MTV News Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin has at last revealed who will be joining Nicole Scherzinger in the group after the departure of three members early this year. On Saturday, Antin tweeted a photo of the new group. The four new members are Kherington Payne from “So You Think You Can Dance”; former Lakers Girl Vanessa Curry; Rino Nakasone-Razalan, a former Harajuku Girl and member of “America’s Best Dance Crew” runners-up Beat Freaks, and former Girlicious member Jamie Lee Ruiz. Antin tweeted that the photo was taken after the Dolls performed at a private party. In January, Jessica Sutta left the Dolls to pursue a solo career, and Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Roberts announced their departure in March. Both Antin and Scherzinger asserted that the other singers’ departure group didn’t mean the group was over. “PCD IS FAR FROM OVER! In fact round 3 is just beginning! STAY TUNED if u BELIEVE in PCD! Love you!” Antin tweeted. “Ooohh love you all! Keep sending me ur tweets, positive or not, it just shows u care! I knw there’s a Doll inside all of you! I wanna hear!” The new members have also been posting their own Twitter messages about joining the group. “Thank you Everyone for the love and support!” Payne wrote . “It means the world to me/us! Love you all 🙂 xoxo.” Curry shared similar sentiments. “Thank you everyone for the supportive tweets!! The Pussycat dolls are ready to bring it hard for you guys!! muah :)” she wrote . In March, as Scherzinger was prepping for her turn on “Dancing With the Stars,” she sat down with MTV News to discuss the group’s new lineup. “[The change is] kind of inevitable, right? When it comes to girl groups, I think we did the best that we could for a good chunk of time,” she explained. “We had an amazing time, and then people change and people grow, and sometimes things aren’t right for them. We’re all artists — just go and be creative. I love the PCD. It’s been a blessing for me. I don’t take it for granted, so I can’t wait to do more music.” What do you think of the new PCD lineup? Bret Michaels Back In The Hospital

A test finds a hole in the singer’s heart. By Kara Warner Bret Michaels Photo: Harpo Fresh from a healthier-looking appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” following his hospitalization for treatment of a brain hemorrhage last month, rocker Bret Michaels is back in the hospital after complaining of numbness on the left side of his body in his face and hands. According to Michaels’ website , doctors described the symptoms as a Transient Ischemic Attack or warning stroke. While performing MRI and CT scans, doctors conducted ultrasound tests looking for blood clots — specifically an Ultrasound Bubble Test of his heart — which proved positive for a Patent Forum Ovale, or a hole in his heart. Michaels’ neurosurgeon is quoted on the site: “There is no doubt that the positive Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is devastating news to Bret and his family. The good news is that it is operable and treatable and we think we may have diagnosed the problem that caused the Transient Ischemic Attach (TIA) or warning stroke; however we feel it is highly unlikely this is connected to the brain hemorrhage he suffered just a few weeks earlier. Once again it is great that he quickly reacted to the severe numbness and got to the hospital immediately. “I realize Bret wants to make a full recovery so that he can be active with his family, attempt to attend the finale of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and especially get back on the road to continue making music,” Dr. Zabramski continued. “Without a doubt he is very determined to get healthy and make a 100% recovery. Medically speaking it is a fantastic attitude both mentally and physically for him to have. However, Bret’s brain and body are not quite 100% yet, especially with the hole found in his heart. Further tests will be conducted throughout the week and I will have more information next week as to how this Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) will be treated. For now, Bret will be treated with outpatient care, which includes a daily injection of Lovenox (a blood thinner to reduce the chance of blood clots) and blood tests.” Michaels’ rep, Janna Elias, added the following statement on Bret’s behalf: “Bret wants everyone to know he cannot thank you enough for all of the well-wishes, prayers and good vibes you have sent his way. Even though these last few months have been tough on him and his family, especially this most recent setback, he is in good spirits, great medical hands and is positive and hopeful that everything is going to be OK. He is up, walking, talking, continuing his daily rehab and very happy to be alive, but he has made it clear he is sick and tired of being in the hospital and is ready to rock again.” It was unclear what day Michaels entered the hospital or whether this latest setback will affect his scheduled “Celebrity Apprentice” appearance on Sunday. Simon Cowell Tells Oprah His ‘Time’s Up’ On ‘American Idol’

Judge also says he ‘hated’ his reaction to Susan Boyle’s appearance on ‘Britain’s Got Talent.’ By Kara Warner Simon Cowell on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Photo: Harpo The end of “American Idol” season nine next week will also bring the departure of controversial-yet-adored judge Simon Cowell . The Brit appeared on Thursday’s (May 20) “Oprah Winfrey Show” to discuss his reasons for leaving, whether he’ll miss the show and why he’s starting a new, seemingly similar show. Oprah started the interview by asking Cowell point-blank why he’s leaving “Idol.” “Time’s up,” he answered. “It feels like the right thing to do.” The often sharp-tongued Brit said part of the reason behind his departure is due to boredom. “After a while, you start to go on automatic pilot. Too many times I was sitting there [at the judges’ table] bored. The audience deserves more than that … and I can’t hide when I’m bored.” To combat that boredom, Cowell said he’s launching a U.S. version of his “X Factor” talent show that, although similar to “Idol,” will have several differences. “It’s different because there’s no upper age limit. … Singing groups can enter the show,” he explained. “I have no idea whether it’s going to work or not, but I’ll put its success and failure on whether we can find a star.” Oprah then asked if Cowell is bored on “Idol” now why he would move on to yet another talent show. “I actually like doing it, funny enough,” he said. “I remember Fantasia singing ‘Summertime,’ and for three minutes, I lost myself. I like the buzz it creates. You want to be part of something people are talking about. I love that feeling.” While recalling some of his favorite contestants (Carrie Underwood and Fantasia) Cowell readily admitted that his “big ego” often gets in his way — particularly with the case of Susan Boyle’s now-famous audition on “Britain’s Got Talent” “On the day [of her audition], I was in such a bad mood, I didn’t want to be there, I never thought we’d find anyone good,” he remembered. “When I watched the clip back, I actually hated myself. We’re all sneering, we’re not listening. I didn’t like what I saw. It was a wake-up call, and I was happy she made us look stupid, because we deserved it.” Yet all in all, and given his track record (and reported $1 billion net worth from his various productions), Cowell said he’s confident he can still find undiscovered talent: “I do trust my judgment as somebody who can spot a potential star.” Regarding his impending “Idol” departure, Cowell said he expects his last night on the ratings juggernaut to be poignant. “The final night will be quite emotional,” he told Oprah. “I’ve had a great time. I love working over here [in the U.S.] and never thought I would.” What did you think of Cowell’s interview? Let us know in the comments! Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ Returns To First Place

Jay beats ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ in his first week back, but the gap narrows in the second week. By Josh Wigler Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” Photo: NBC Despite the strong showing of fan support for freshly ousted “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien, it appears that many late-night television viewers have settled their personal differences with NBC and Jay Leno. According to The Associated Press, Leno averaged 5.6 million viewers in his first week back as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” easily outmatching the 3.66 million that tuned in for CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman.” Letterman, who consistently beat O’Brien in ratings throughout the recently departed host’s run on “The Tonight Show,” famously finished in second place next to Leno before he vacated the talk-show chair for his failed prime-time experiment, “The Jay Leno Show.” Additionally, Leno’s return to late night proved beneficial to “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Entertainment Weekly reports that the “Saturday Night Live” castmember-turned-host beat out CBS’ “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” by a margin of 147,000 viewers. While Leno’s first week marked a decisive win for NBC over CBS, his second week back wasn’t quite as victorious. From Monday through Thursday of this week, Leno averaged 4.3 million viewers against Letterman’s 4 million, depicting a much closer race between the late-night hosts than Leno’s first week back behind the desk seemed to indicate. Leno returned to “The Tonight Show” last week following a widely publicized dispute between NBC and Conan O’Brien. In his first show following his return to the 11:35 p.m. time slot, Leno joked that he would hold on to the “Tonight Show” hosting gig “at least for a while.” Since his departure from “The Tonight Show,” O’Brien — who is contractually prohibited from making television appearances until September 2010 — has kept his presence intact by joining Twitter and announcing a national comedy tour that will take place from April 12 through June. Have you been tuning in to Jay’s “Tonight Show” return? Do you miss Conan? Let us know!
