Chris Rock Perplexed By Spike Lee’s Sundance Tirade

‘I just asked a normal question,’ Rock tells MTV News about what prompted the director’s passionate criticism against Hollywood. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Chris Rock Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — The old refrain of “more money, more problems” seems to apply to Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer,” the director’s new drama he unveiled at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday. During a Q&A session following the screening of the filmmaker’s religion-focused feature, actor and comedian Chris Rock (at Sundance for his new film “2 Days in New York” from Julie Delpy) asked Lee if he would have done anything differently had he “actually gotten… studio money” for the film. Lee’s response was a fiery one, fueled with comments that condemned the Hollywood studio system for knowing “nothing about black people.” “We never went to the studios with this film. I bought a camera and said we’re gonna do this mother[bleeping] film ourselves. I didn’t need a mother[bleeping] studio telling me something about Red Hook! They know nothing about black people,” Lee said in response to Rock’s question, according to the New York Post . “And they’re gonna give me notes about what a 13-year-old black boy and girl do in Red Hook? [Bleep] no!” Lee’s response was nothing short of perplexing to Rock, who told MTV News that he “just asked a normal question.” “I just asked him how it would have been different if he’d had it financed by a studio. If he had more money,” he continued. “That was it. That’s all I said. Everything else, I don’t know. You gotta ask Spike.” In “Red Hook Summer,” Lee tells the story of a young boy sent by his mother from Atlanta to spend the summer in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with his grandfather, a strict preacher he’s never met. The film stars Clarke Peters, Jules Brown and Thomas Jefferson Byrd. Do you think Spike Lee’s criticism at Sundance out of line? Sound off in the comments section! The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Fantasia Gives Birth To Son

‘I feel so blessed that my son Dallas Xavier was born healthy,’ says singer, who gave birth Tuesday in North Carolina. By Jocelyn Vena Fantasia Photo: Courtesy of J Records Fantasia Barrino gave birth to a baby boy, Dallas Xavier Barrino, Tuesday in North Carolina. In a statement to People , the season-three “American Idol” winner said, “I feel so blessed that my son Dallas Xavier was born healthy, and is a wonderful new addition to our family. I thank all my fans for their well wishes and continued support.” In an interview with Wendy Williams back in October, the singer revealed that she was expecting a son by the end of December. Fantasia, 27, has remained quiet about who the father of Dallas is, but she has been linked to on-again, off-again boyfriend Antwaun Cook since 2010. This is the second child for the singer, who has a 10-year-old daughter, Zion, from a previous relationship. In August, Fantasia announced she was pregnant during a show in Florida. “You are the first persons that I share this news with. And I share this with you because I can relate to you,” she told the Jacksonville crowd. “And for a while I walked around figuring out what will they say and what will they think about me. But now I tell you, I don’t live my life for folk. This child that I carry, God has given me this child. And I don’t have to hide it from none of y’all.” Life for Barrino has been on the mend since the summer of 2010, when she made headlines for suffering a drug overdose after ingesting a combination of aspirin and a sleep aid. Rumors abounded that the singer’s alleged relationship with Cook, who was married at the time, was a factor in her suicide attempt. She quickly recovered, however, to promote her album Bittersweet . In her 2010 “Behind the Music” special, Barrino addressed her ups and downs, concluding, “I know that I am beautiful and special. I am who I am — and that’s what makes me Fantasia.” Share your well-wishes for Fantasia in the comments below! Related Photos Fantasia’s Career In Photos Related Artists Fantasia

Shailene Woodley on The Descendants, Positive Thinking, and Her Future in Film

The roster of actors in the world who could reduce megastar George Clooney to rubble with a single withering look is short, but add newcomer Shailene Woodley to the top of the list. As Alex, the acerbic 17-year-old daughter of Clooney’s Hawaiian landowner and family man in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants , Woodley (of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager ) makes an auspicious film debut that could land her in the Oscar race — not that Woodley, perhaps the most well-adjusted young star on the rise in Hollywood, would take awards razzle-dazzle too seriously.
