Holy Swashbucklers! Rumors are flying that Johnny Depp is considering a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean installment, and the speculation may be overheating. Some international papers including The Sun say the newly single star could make some rather unprecedented cha-ching — to the tune of £60 million (that’s about $95 million at current exchange rates). That would be some crazy treasure even the likes of, well, a pirate, could only dream of… But is the super-star actor worth the stupid money even if the rumors were only say, mostly true? Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed in May that a fifth Pirates script was in the works. He told the Los Angeles Times that he could only make the pic with Depp on board. Who else could play Captain Jack Sparrow after all? “Hopefully, if this one does well, (Depp) will want to come back and play the character again,” Bruckheimer told the L.A. Times. “But it’s going to depend on the screenplay. It always does. He’s maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience.” Apparently, Depp is considering another round of Pirates , according to The Wrap. The site also noted last summer Depp cashed had cashed in with the franchise at almost $350 million at the time. OK, so Depp already owns a Bahamian island and likely could seize some more with his current Pirates war chest alone, but is he worth potentially the biggest pay out yet if he takes on a fifth installment? Here’s a breakdown of the franchise’s worldwide grosses: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tide : $1,043,871,802 ($250 million production budget) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End : $963,420,425 ($300 million production budget) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest : $1,066,179,725 ($225 million production budget) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl : $654,264,015 ($140 million production budget) Of course, these are theatrical grosses, never mind all the other tie-ins. So, is a mega-package, whether it’s a cool $90 million — or so — worth the payout? [ Source: The Wrap , Box Office Mojo , The Sun ]

Yes, yes, I know Mr. Eko has a real name. But who doesn’t like imagining Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ‘s LOST alter ego duking it out with Dr. Who (okay, Chris Eccleston) and Thor (FINE, the Huntsman the jock the Wolverine Chris Hemsworth) in an epic Thor 2 Norse space brawl? Per Variety , Akinnuoye-Agbaje has landed the role of Dark Elf bruiser Algrim the Strong in Thor 2 (AKA Thor: The Dark World ). The nerdy details: In the comicbooks, Algrim the Strong was the most powerful of a race of Dark Elves, who is coerced by Malekith to fight Thor. After he’s betrayed by Malekith and injured during a battle, Algrim is healed and transformed into a much more powerful being called Kurse, who is twice as a strong as Thor. Alan Taylor has taken over directing duties from Kenneth Branagh, with cast members Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgard, Rene Russo and Kat Dennings returning. Thor 2 hits theaters November 8, 2013. [ Variety ]

In the latest installment of One-Sheet Wonder , a column going deep on the best, worst, weirdest and other milestones of contemporary movie-poster art, Movieline takes a look at the new poster for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master . — Ed. The Master , Paul Thomas Anderson’s enigmatic follow-up to There Will Be Blood , has been trailed by speculation and assumption for months — Is it about Scientology? Is Philip Seymour Hoffman portraying L. Ron Hubbard in a biopic capacity? — and every question has been met with denials and mystery. But each new marketing piece sheds more light on what we’ll get. After two beautiful , beguiling teaser trailers, a beautiful, beguiling one-sheet for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master debuted today over at Ain’t It Cool News . But like the clips before it, the poster tells us almost nothing about the movie. (Or do they?) The first trailer was peppered with Scientology-ish personality questions, and this poster seems based on an abstraction of an e-meter, the device used in Scientology auditing. The close-up of a barreled piece of silver metal seems like an unfinished soda can. But take a look at the tubes in this photo (pictured right) and it’s not a far leap to see the poster as a macro view of one of those e-meter tubes. But then what’s that dirty, flat-champagne-like liquid draining out of the poster (notice the drops at the top)? It could reference Hubbard’s Naval background and his life on a yacht, and there’s a vague nautical element to the fonts. Or it could refer to the flushing of alcohol that comes with the Scientology auditing process. Whatever the case, it creates a nice refraction in the word “MASTER,” bisecting it and putting the halves increasingly off kilter as you go from left to right, a reflection of the schism hinted at in the second trailer (” Just say something that’s true! “). This probably won’t be the only poster for The Master , but don’t expect a second one-sheet to bathe the plot in sunlight. There Will Be Blood had two domestic one-sheets, and while the teaser was far more engaging than the final art neither gave the game away. Time will tell whether The Master follows suit, but like with TWBB the mystery surrounding the film — encapsulated in this excellent first poster — makes the wait to see it interminable. Dante A. *: As determined by Movieline’s Institute For the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics after crunching 23 weeks of data from the awards cognoscenti and beyond. Thank you for reading; our work here is done. The Final 9: 1. The Artist 2. The Help 3. The Descendants 4. Moneyball 5. Hugo 6. The Tree of Life 7. Midnight in Paris 8. The Daldry 9. War Horse What’s to say? The die was cast long ago, and unless all those old-ass , inactive white dudes who apparently make the Academy magic happen suddenly decide they want to recognize The Help (or come around on Moneyball a la some latecoming pundits or at least one old-ass, distaff counterpart ), then you might as well just plan to go out on Sunday night to take advantage of the quiet restaurants and/or grocery stores. (And maybe follow our livetweeting here if/when the urge strikes.) The Final 5: 1. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 2. Alexander Payne, The Descendants 3. Martin Scorsese, Hugo 4. Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life 5. Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris Did we ever settle on how many of these guys are actually going to show up to lose to Hazanavicius in person? The Final 5: 1. Viola Davis, The Help 1. Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady 3. Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn 4. Rooney Mara, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 5. Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs Sasha Stone wrote a few days ago about the “general consensus” solidifying around some shakier frontrunners; Davis seems the most locked-in of that class. Anything could still happen this weekend, which is fine by me as long as it happens fast and we can get on with our lives. The Final 5: 1. Jean Dujardin, The Artist 2. George Clooney, The Descendants 3. Brad Pitt, Moneyball 4. Demi
With its soapy survey of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe, the new NBC potboiler Smash is clinging to reasonably good ratings since launching last week. And now The Weinstein Company, never one to miss an opportunity, has discreetly hitched its double Oscar nominee My Week With Marilyn to Smash ‘s own (alleged) Marilyn-fueled momentum. There’s the obvious Oscarcast factor as well, but the implications in this note just over the ML transom are clear enough: The Weinstein Company announced today that they are expanding MY WEEK WITH MARILYN into 600 theaters nationwide. This will give audiences a chance to see for the first time or revisit the film in theaters in advance of the awards. MY WEEK WITH MARILYN garnered two Academy Award Nominations for Michelle Williams, Best Actress, and Kenneth Branagh, Best Supporting Actor. Audiences are again embracing Marilyn Monroe with the success of the film and now the small screen hit, SMASH. MY WEEK WITH MARILYN is currently in select theaters and will be expanding on February 24th. A little desperate, sure, but at least it beats ” WHAT MOVIE REPRESENTS THE THING THAT HAPPENED IN CINEMA THIS YEAR? ” You’ve come a long-ish way, Harvey. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter .
