Whitney Houston’s ‘Sparkle’ Trailer Debuts

We finally get a glimpse of singer/actress’ final performance. By Fallon Prinzivalli Whitney Houston in “Sparkle” Photo: Sony Pictures The trailer for Whitney Houston ‘s “Sparkle” debuted Monday (April 2), giving fans a sneak peek at the singer/actress’ final performance. The first glimpse of Houston in the trailer shows her character, Emma, dancing to the Motown music her daughters are playing in the living room, sung by one Cee Lo Green. Houston jokes, “Yeah, y’all like that, huh? Makes you want to dance, huh? I’m going to get it and you will too. Keep dancing like that, you’ll bring home some kid you can’t feed.” The humor continues as her daughters jump into bed together to hide from Emma after arriving home after their curfew. “My babies,” she says. “I know y’all don’t love each other that much.” As the trailer progresses, the comedy dims and the weight of fame takes its toll. On the precipice of getting a record deal, Emma is hesitant to let her daughters pursue music as a career. She says, “Was my life not enough of a cautionary tale for you?” And while the sisters cope with the spotlight, one deals with an abusive marriage that may force her to abandon her dream. The trailer shows a preview of a performance that will leave fans amazed, while at the same time feeling the great loss the music industry suffered with Houston’s death. Co-star Derek Luke shared his thoughts on Houston’s last performance when MTV News spoke to him at the Independent Spirit Awards. “The beautiful thing about being in ‘Sparkle’ is that we had something that was recorded that I can hold onto, and in that time, me and my wife and Whitney … the other cast, we really bonded,” he said of working with the star. “Whitney did an amazing job, so I can’t wait for people to see it and there’s no great way to go out, but what a performance she had.” The movie centers on three talented sisters who deal with the struggles of fame after they form a musical group. Houston not only starred in the remake of the 1976 Irene Cara film, but was executive producer as well. “It was definitely her baby,” Jordin Sparks told Entertainment Weekly about Houston’s role in “Sparkle.” Sparks stars as Sparkle Williams, the title role. “Even before she passed I wanted to be able to represent this movie in a way that would honor her and respect her, because she worked so hard on it. With her passing, it’s definitely been a lot more pressure.” From the looks of the trailer, she has nothing to be nervous about. We think Whitney Houston would’ve been very proud. “Sparkle” is scheduled to hit theaters on August 17. After rocking the Palms’ poolside stage with “Do It,” “Marvin & Chardonnay” and “Dance (A$$),” the Detroit MC told MTV News, “It’s just cool as hell, period, because I used to look at all the Spring Break performances when I was coming up. To be doing it myself, I can’t even be more thankful.” While his Palms party automatically ranked as Sean’s favorite, he also recalled an unforgettable run in Miami. “Besides this one, I went down to Miami one year,” Sean said. “Drinks, mixed with girls, mixed with Detroit players — that’s a crazy combo.” As far as how one might deal with those next-day hangovers, Big Sean advised, “Don’t worry about the morning after. SMH: Detroit Students Suspended For Complaining About Unqualifed Teachers And Demanding “An Education”

“We want… education! When do we want it? Now!” About 50 students were suspended Thursday from the all-boys Frederick Douglass Academy in Detroit, Mich. for walking out of classes in protest, demanding “an education.”: Among their complaints: a lack of consistent teachers, the reassignment of the school principal, educators who abuse sick time and a shortage of textbooks. “We’ve been wronged and disrespected and lied to and cheated,” senior Tevin Hill told the Detroit Free Press. “They didn’t listen to us when we complained to the administration. They didn’t listen to the parents when they complained to the administration, so I guess this is the only way to get things solved.” One math teacher, parent Sharise Smith tells WJBK-TV, has been absent for more than 68 days. The students marched outside the school and chanted, “We want… education! When do we want it? Now!” Students and parents became increasingly alarmed when Frederick Douglass was no longer listed as an application school in the district — current students had to apply to attend. Smith told the Free Press that her son was given an A in geometry without taking a final exam. “It was by default, just for showing up. It wasn’t because he earned an A,” she said. The Frederick Douglass boys are just some of many students in a city that proved to be the worst-performing urban school area among 21 surveyed across the country. Despite its national rank, Detroit’s overall performance increased on the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress. The 17-year-old Hill told The Detroit News that so many teachers have been simultaneously absent from school that dozens of students had been forced to gather in the gym or other common school areas. Students also went for long periods without homework, and Hill said he struggled on a recent placement exam at Bowling Green State University, where he’s been accepted to attend next year. “I literally couldn’t answer a question on there,” Hill said. “Right now, I’m not going to be as successful as I should be because I haven’t been properly taught.” How sad! We salute these kids for standing their ground. It’s sad that children are being forced to protest just for a decent education SMH Source More On Bossip! Sex Is A Weapon: Detroit Man Shot Dead By Gas Station Clerk After Beefing Over The Price Of Condoms!

Ok, so maybe Jimmy-hats have suffered from inflation a bit, but damn! A man was shot and killed Friday night after an apparent dispute over the price of condoms at a Detroit gas station. WWJ’s Beth Fisher spoke to an employee at the BP gas station on Fenkell and Meyers, where the shooting took place on the city’s westside overnight. The employee said the argument was apparently over the price of a box of condoms. He said the customer bought a box of condoms, but made a comment that he was overcharged and could have bought them somewhere else for a cheaper price. After being told he couldn’t get a refund, the customer allegedly began tossing items off the shelves. That’s when, according to the employee, the overnight clerk came out with a gun and fired a warning shot, which struck the customer in the shoulder. Police say the customer was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. Ron Scott, with the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, said they are working on conflict resolution between gas station owners and Detroiters, something they will be discussing at a meeting on Sunday. “We can’t have this kind of attitude and this kind of disrespect for life. Whether it happens to people who work in the gas station or definitely if it happens to people in the community. From what I’m understanding, the price of a condom should not be somebody’s life,” said Scott. Police say the store clerk, whose name has not been released, is in custody. An investigation is ongoing. R.I.P. sir… Image via WWJ Detroit Source More On Bossip! Eff A Traveler’s Digest: 10 Countries With Beautiful BLACK Women Action! ‘Justified’ Villain Backs The Winning Side

‘He’s a bit of a wiseass, and he thinks he’s above them all,’ Neal McDonough tells MTV News about playing the bleach-blond big bad on the show. By Josh Wigler Neal McDonough on “Justified” Photo: FX ” Justified ” lawman Raylan Givens has faced no shortage of memorable nemeses in his days as a Lexington, Kentucky-based U.S. marshal: hoodlums with “four kidneys,” an “apple pie”-brewing and weed-slinging mama crime boss, not to mention the born again and born again and born again Boyd Crowder. But Robert Quarles? In a sea of backwoods Kentucky killers and thieves, this bleach-blond mobster may very well take the cake. Television veteran and “Captain America” actor Neal McDonough has graced the FX drama “Justified” with his formidable presence for the show’s currently airing third season, and viewers are better off for it — even if deputy Givens, the modern-day cowboy played by lead actor and producer Timothy Olyphant , is ruing the day that McDonough’s Quarles first set foot in Harlan County. “It’s like two great chess players in the same room,” McDonough told MTV News about this season’s ongoing battle between Quarles and Givens. “We both learn about each other. We’ve done our background checks on each other. So we both know we’re worthy opponents — but when we get in front of each other, it’s pretty awesome, because we’re on the opposite sides of the spectrum, but there’s a respect level for what each of us does. We’re both really good at what we do. But there’s also that ultimate disrespect from both of us: ‘Don’t think you’re going to beat me. I’ll let you dance with me for a while, but I’m going to crush you.’ ” Quarles has already dished out some crushing blows. In just eight episodes, the Detroit mobster has dropped by Raylan’s home unannounced, executed the deputy’s ex-wife’s ex-husband (it’s complicated), framed Raylan for the murder and set him up as a dirty cop. None of that mentions Quarles’ other atrocities, such as fatally shooting a businessman and his secretary mainly to prove a point, as well as brutally torturing a prisoner while simultaneously fielding a phone call from his very young son. What kind of monster can commit such crimes, you ask? According to McDonough, a very funny one. “He has a bit of a sense of humor,” said McDonough, who has played other villains with significantly fewer wisecracks to their names, including those in “Walking Tall” and “Street Fighter.” “This one, Quarles, his tongue is firmly in cheek in a lot of scenes. He’s a bit of a wiseass, and he thinks he’s above them all. To play that, and then have him unravel, trying to keep that veneer up, is what makes it really fun for me to play.” Indeed, the walls are closing in on Quarles. Raylan Givens is not his only obstacle: Quarles is now completely cut off from the Detroit crime syndicate he once worked for, and is starting to abuse the illicit pain pills he’s been pushing in Harlan County. “He’s a lot like me in a lot of ways: a businessman, but family first,” McDonough said of his character. “But Quarles gets addicted not just to the rush of power, but worse, to OxyContin. We all know how bad that gets when you’re hooked on junk like that.” Just how bad will Quarles’ addiction get? The actor teased, “The only thing I’ve asked of [‘Justified’ executive producer and show-runner] Graham Yost is that by episode 10 or 11, I’d like to be naked and hopped up on my own stuff. He goes, ‘Already thought of that, trust me!’ ” “Justified” marks the third collaboration between McDonough and Yost, having previously worked together on “Boomtown” and “Band of Brothers.” In fact, Quarles was written specifically with McDonough in mind, said the actor, who added that he would happily work with Yost on any project, anytime, anywhere. “If Graham Yost called me and said, ‘I have a three-minute infomercial to shoot in Bulgaria, are you in?’ I’d say, ‘Yes, what time is the flight?’ ” he said. “Graham tells me what to do and I do it. He gives me the juiciest stuff I can imagine as an actor.” The juicy stuff isn’t always cruel and unusual, either. McDonough teased an upcoming scene that shows a “beautifully altruistic” side of Quarles that he described as one of his top moments of the season. “There’s one scene in particular where a young boy comes into my trailer threatening to kill me,” said McDonough. “How I disarm him, not just physically but emotionally … it was maybe my favorite scene of the year. It’s just simple, emotional, truthful acting. Graham lobbed it in the air for me and I hit it out of the ballyard for him.” In short, to say that Quarles is an astounding addition to the “Justified” rogues’ gallery would be a tremendous understatement — and given where the character is headed in the back half of season three, it appears that we haven’t seen anything yet. “The first half of the season was great,” McDonough said. “But the second half … the second half is money. It’s fantastic for me as an actor.” Freshly renewed for a fourth season, “Justified” airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
