How Did Eminem’s Recovery Have Such A Big Debut?

Rapper’s more mature style appears to have appealed to wide audience, experts say. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope At this point, we’re used to Eminem debuting at #1 . After all, he’s done it six times in a row, including two records that sold more than 1 million copies in their first week on the charts. But following last year’s comeback album, Relapse, which sold nearly 2 million copies despite Em admitting that it was not his finest hour , it wasn’t a lock that Recovery would be greeted with the same instant success as the Detroit rapper’s previous work. There were the fans who were turned off by the weird accents he adopted on Relapse, the dark, gory vibe of the campaign promoting that album and the overall grim nature of the music, not to mention the lack of a breakout, signature hit. And while Relapse did very solid business its first week out, with sales topping 608,000, even some experts were surprised when Recovery snagged the year’s highest debut to date , with sales of 741,000 after initial projections had it in the 500,00-600,000 range. In a music industry starved for hits, Recovery became only the third album since 2008 to debut with more than 700,000 copies sold. So how did Eminem do it again? Chalk it up to a killer first single, some clever promotional gimmicks, more visibility for the rapper and a mature attitude that may have broadened his fanbase after a dozen years in the game. “I think for him, [ Relapse ] didn’t connect with his fans the way he wanted it to, so he wasn’t happy with that,” Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, told The Detroit News on Tuesday. ” Recovery offers more of an emotional connection for listeners. … I think Em made the kind of album that people were waiting for with Recovery. ” From a jokey viral campaign featuring the ShamWow guy appearances on “The Soup,” “The Late Show With David Letterman,” the BET Awards and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and a one-page profile in the New York Times Sunday magazine , in which he came out in favor of gay marriage, Eminem has done more press and appearances in the past month for the new album than he did for almost the entire Relapse cycle. The heightened exposure from the typically reclusive rapper has clearly helped keep his name in the news and might have boosted sales. “We sold a ton more of it than the last time,” said Carl Mello, director of purchasing for the 28-store Newbury Comics chain of record stores. “Which is always a surprise in these days, with trends being the way they are.” Mello chalked the big first week up to more crossover airplay and the album’s first single, “Not Afraid,” which he thinks brought more people into the store to buy the album. “On the last one, he would have a single and it would go top five and then disappear. On this one, they actually played it on the radio and there was definitely some anticipation for it.” Mello said the album did much better than he expected in the Newbury stores and had the kind of crossover appeal the rapper hasn’t shown since his heyday in the early 2000s. The album didn’t appear to be affected by leaking two weeks early and, as the News noted, it was the first of Em’s records not to announce itself with a pop-culture-skewering first single like “My Name Is,” “The Real Slim Shady,” “Just Lose It” and “We Made You.” As he typically does, Em offered cryptic details at first about the disc, tweeting in mid-April that he’d tossed the planned Relapse 2 album to work on a new disc. “Not Afraid” hit radio two weeks later and debuted at #1, and within weeks, the album’s cover leaked out , generating more buzz. The grimier “Won’t Back Down” leaked out earlier this month and was used in commercials for the shooter video game “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” and the second official single, the Rihanna-assisted ballad “Love the Way You Lie,” has already hit #1 on the iTunes singles chart, with a video on the way. By going with the pensive, midtempo “Not Afraid” — a serious-minded track in which Marshall Mathers, now 37, ponders his recent problems and tries to connect with fans who have also lived through hard times — as the first single, Entertainment Weekly correspondent Simon Vozick-Levinson said the rapper was signaling he’d turned a corner. While the CD was expected to be big, at a time when even some major career stars are struggling to follow up hit albums (Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Miley Cyrus), the more robust promotional push and the crucial first single are major factors. “When he put out the last album, people were just getting used to him being back after four or five years away, and he didn’t do many interviews or appearances,” Vozick-Levinson said. “But now he’s out front, doing late-night talk shows and reminding people that he has a new album. He’s put the work in, and it’s paid off. “But he also picked the right first single,” he added. “Last time he came back with singles that didn’t connect with people, and there was no clear idea of why he was back and what he was doing with his career. ‘Not Afraid’ was a smart choice, because it had the message that he’s older and wiser, that he’s grown up with his audience and he’s more mature than in the past.” And while he’s not sure the rest of the album lives up to that standard, Vozick-Levinson said the song clearly connected with Em’s audience, and the not-so-hidden double meaning of the album title was perfect for these tenuous times. “He sent a message that he’s connected with the audience in the way it is packaged too. Recovery has a double meaning about his own sobriety and his own recovery and also about the economic climate. People want to believe in the idea of things getting better and making a fresh start.” Eschewing the traditional violent, sophomoric between-song skits, tapping major stars like Pink and Rihanna and opening up his stable of producers after years of relying on mentor Dr. Dre has also helped Eminem connect to a new generation of hip-hop fans who are used to hearing MCs like Drake and B.o.B chant and sing their choruses in between bars. Though he can’t singlehandedly save the music biz, Vozick-Levinson said what’s good for Eminem is ultimately good for an industry struggling to turn around a nearly decade-long slide in album sales. “You can’t transfer his success to other artists, because he’s always been so unique,” he said. “But it’s good news for the industry that something like this can still happen and blockbuster sales and career artists still exist.” Were you surprised by Eminem’s blockbuster debut? By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” Photo: Matthew Simpson/ CBS After selling out their upcoming concert at New York’s Yankee Stadium before tickets even officially went on sale, Eminem and Jay-Z took the stage on the “Late Show With David Letterman” Friday night. The two veteran MCs are promoting their co-headlining hometown stadium performances in Detroit’s Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium this September. Eminem, sporting a black jacket, jeans and a white shirt, began by presenting the comedic “Late Show Top Ten” list segment featuring his “Pieces of Advice for the Kids.” “If I sign something for you and I see it on eBay, when you go home, I’m gonna be under your bed,” Eminem joked, struggling to keep a straight face. He continued with, “Always purchase music through authorized retailers that pay royalties to the artists,” and “Remember the magic words: ‘Please,’ ‘Thank You’ and ‘Step Off Bitch.’ ” Jay-Z followed Em by sitting down and chatting with Letterman about his and the Detroit MC’s working relationship. “We did a song on my album called Blueprint — the first one, I’ve got a lot of them — called ‘Renegade’ and it was good,” Jay said. “When you make good songs, you become friends.” Letterman then asked why the pair are just deciding to tour together now. “Em is a notorious non-tourer,” said Jay. Later, Hov almost argued the positives of NBA baller LeBron James leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and joining the New Jersey Nets, which the rapper co-owns, before stopping himself. “There’s rules and guidelines that I want to be very certain to follow,” Jay told Letterman. “Everyone would love to have a LeBron James on their team. He’s a free agent come July 1. We’re gonna try after July.” Letterman disagreed with Jay’s interest in James, saying, “If LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland.” At press time, the basketball player’s decision is still anyone’s guess. Then Jay and Eminem’s pre-taped performance rolled. The gents played three songs with a live band, opening with Eminem’s latest single “Not Afraid” before moving into Jay’s “On to the Next One” from 2009’s The Blueprint 3. As a grand finale, the pair performed “Renegade,” their first collaboration from Hov’s 2001 album The Blueprint. The mini-concert was originally filmed earlier this week atop the Ed Sullivan Theater . Eminem Talks ‘Recovery,’ Touring Sober

‘Everything right now is a step at a time,’ the MC tells ‘Billboard.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem on the cover of Billboard Photo: Billboard Eminem graces the cover of the new issue of Billboard . In the accompanying interview, the Detroit rapper discusses his struggle to return to rap dominance after a five-year hiatus to combat his drug dependency. Last year he returned with Relapse , an uneven collection that at its best lucidly detailed the depths of his battle and at its worst came across as hackneyed. On the recently released Recovery , Eminem decided to return to to his earlier work for inspiration. “I would go back and listen to songs off The Marshall Mathers LP , The Eminem Show , and some of Encore and ask, ‘Why don’t my music feel like this anymore?’ ” Em said. “”‘The Way I Am,’ ‘Criminal’ and ‘Toy Soldiers’ were songs that meant something. I wanted there to be a reason why I was making each song, instead of making it just to make it.” During the recording of his two albums prior to Recovery , Em said, he was either in full-blown addiction mode ( Encore ) or so freshly sober ( Relapse ) that he was unable to focus correctly on the material he made. “I was like, ‘S—, man, trees are beautiful again,’ ” Em said, describing the way he viewed the world during the making of Relapse . “‘What a nice day it is.’ I don’t think I was paying attention to what the average listener might like or not like.” Em said that he now wants to focus on earning the praise of his peers and die-hard fans with Recovery . Then, he’ll focus on hitting the road. He’s set to appear at music festivals both abroad and in the United States this summer, and he’s playing shows with Jay-Z in Detroit and New York in September. But the superstar MC is cautious about returning to a major touring schedule. “I’ll do these shows and see how I feel afterward, then set up a couple more,” he said. “I’ve had to relearn to do shows sober, because there were so many years that I didn’t know how to do it. Alcohol, Valium — all these things were crutches for me so that I didn’t have to feel anything when I went onstage. Everything right now is a step at a time, a day at a time.” Are you going to see Eminem perform soon? Sound off in the comments below! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

Eminem Does ‘Top 10,’ Jay-Z Talks LeBron James On ‘David Letterman’

‘Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,’ Em jokes during dig at BP over oil spill. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z visits the “Late Show With David Letterman” on Tuesday Photo: Getty Images Eminem and Jay-Z will appear on the “Late Show with David Letterman” tonight (June 25), and in addition to performing on the rooftop together, the two rappers also talk with the cranky host. In preview clips released online , Em is seen participating in Letterman’s famous “Top 10” segment and Jay sits down on the couch to chat with Letterman. Letterman and the Brooklyn MC discussed Cleveland Cavaliers star (and Jay-Z pal) LeBron James’ impending free agency and the arrival of Mikhail Prokhorov, the New Jersey Nets’ new Russian billionaire majority owner. “The tall guy,” Hov joked, referring to Prokhorov. “You’re a guy,” Letterman then told the rapper. “I’m a guy. Now, if LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland. You wouldn’t do that, would you? Cleveland is in desperate decline. And one of the glimmering hopes they have —” “How’s your ratings in Cleveland?,” Jay interrupted to laughs. Jay, who holds a minority stake in the Nets , admitted if he found himself in a similar situation, he could concede to Letterman’s point. Only three of Eminem’s Top 10 items about advice for kids had been previewed at press time, including jokes about “Toy Story 3,” illegal downloading, and a dig at BP in the wake of the Gulf leak. “Don’t get mixed up with drugs, gangs or oil executives,” the Detroit MC deadpanned. The two rappers taped their appearance earlier in the week in New York. Initially, they requested to perform on top of the famed Ed Sullivan Theater marquee, but officials for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg declined to grant a permit. The pair were able to skirt the issue, however, by taking the show to the rooftop of the building and away from the streets where officials had concerns over public safety. Eminem and Jay-Z’s joint appearance was a part of promotion for their stadium concert series this September in New York and Detroit; two additional shows were announced on Thursday. Eminem Wanted Recovery To Be ‘Different,’ Alex Da Kid Recalls

‘He was looking for new things,’ the ‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Despite countless attempts to get in touch with the Shady Records camp, Alex Da Kid kept striking out. The British producer contacted Eminem’s management and sent various beats, but none of them made the Detroit MC take notice. Then Alex produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and suddenly, Em was the one reaching out to him. The rapper loved “Airplanes” so much that he dropped a verse for the remix, “Airplanes, Part II.” It wasn’t until later, however, that the Shady One realized the producer of B.o.B’s hit was the same guy who was sending him musical samplings. According to Alex Da Kid, Em’s camp then reached out and requested “something different.” “A lot of time, generally in the industry, [artists] will say they want something different, but they don’t know what that is until they hear it,” said Alex, who produced Recovery ‘s “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna . “So you kind of just go out there yourself. ‘Cause if you chase what they did before, it never really works out, and I wanna do different things anyway. That’s my thing. I took his past work into account, but he was looking for new things, and I did my thing, and luckily it worked out.” The producer, who also helmed Nicki Minaj’s first single, “Massive Attack,” sent over only one beat, and Eminem jumped at the record. The result was “Love the Way You Lie,” an ode of sorts to the rapper’s tumultuous relationship with ex-wife Kim. Rihanna recently spoke about the collaboration and explained how Eminem got her to appear on the track. “They reached out to us directly, and they just said, ‘We have this song, and we just think Rihanna would be perfect to sing it,’ ” Rihanna recalled in an interview with E!’s Ben Lyons. “And, of course, I was like, ‘OK, if I love it, I’ll definitely do it, because I love Eminem.’ And I love the song. “It’s really beautiful, and it really stands out,” Rihanna added. “It’s a really unique record. I’m really excited about it.” What do you think of “Love the Way You Lie”? Share your thoughts in the comments. Eminem Enlists Sham Wow Guy For Recovery Ad

Video features pitchman Vince demonstrating the many uses of the disc, out June 21. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Now that Eminem has pushed up the release date of Recovery by a day to June 21 (following the album’s leak last week), the Detroit rapper is pulling out the big guns to promote the disc. In a new video ad called “Emwow” that looks calculated to go viral, Vince the ShamWow guy sets aside the miracle sponge for 30 seconds to sell you about the slice-it, dice-it wonders of the new Marshall Mathers disc. Wearing a black polo embroidered with the Recovery title and his signature headset, Vinny holds up the disc and announces, “Hey, it’s Vince with Eminem’s new album, Recovery, and you’re gonna be clappin’ when you hear Eminem rappin’.” He then demonstrates the “dozens of uses” for the disc, including slicing razor-thin tomatoes for your sandwich, serving as a drink coaster, a necklace for the ladies or even as bling for your garden hose (get it?). He even suggests cutting the disc in half (an unusual selling point for a CD, but we’ll go with it) and using one part to slice cheese and the other to chop onions. “Tacos, steak bone, silicone,” Vince demonstrates, tossing aside a breast implant and oversharing, “I like mine real, so forget about it.” This being Eminem, the ad ends with some bathroom humor, as Vince announces a special bonus product thrown in for free, a feminine-hygiene product called the ShamPon. The rapper surprised his fans at Activision’s E3 party on Monday night in Los Angeles, bringing out guests Travis Barker and Rihanna to help him celebrate the upcoming release. A spokesperson for Em’s label said the album, which features guest spots from Pink and Lil Wayne in addition to Rihanna, will hit stores a day earlier than expected to satisfy the rapper’s biggest supporters. “We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version,” Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said in a press release announcing the new date. “At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem. … Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans.” What do you think of the “Emwow” ad? Eminem’s Recovery Release Date Moved Up One Day

Album will now arrive in stores on June 21, Em confirms in a tweet. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope Eminem’s hotly anticipated album Recovery is set to land on shelves a day earlier than originally planned. The legendary lyricist’s seventh studio album will now get a June 21 release, according to Em’s label, Interscope, after the album leaked online. Once the full LP hit the Net two weeks ahead of its June 22 street date , many expected the Detroit rapper to move up its official delivery. But initial reports seemed to indicate the June date would stick . On Wednesday, XXLmag.com reported that Interscope rep Dennis Dennehey had confirmed the album would roll out on the originally scheduled Tuesday. Yet just a day later, the label issued a press release announcing a new drop date. Eminem has since confirmed the news, tweeting on Monday (June 14): “It’s true. RECOVERY goes on-sale Monday, 6/21 now.” Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said the public’s hunger for the hip-hop icon’s latest effort had fueled the date change. “We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version,” Berman said in the press release. “At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem.” Berman also noted that for devoted fans, adjusting the set’s availability by 24 hours was significant. “Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans.” The Recovery leak came only a few days after Em premiered the dramatic video for his single “Not Afraid.” For his latest set, Marshall Mathers reached beyond his Shady family , teaming with stars like Rihanna, Pink and Lil Wayne. The album also features production from new collaborators like Jim Jonsin, Just Blaze and DJ Khalil. Are you satisfied that Em’s album will drop a day earlier? Should the label release it sooner?
