The Universal Lesson of Russell Armstrong’s Suicide

I don’t know Russell Armstrong or anything about him except what I’ve read about the estranged spouse of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Taylor Armstrong.  I do know something about suicide, however. I know it doesn’t have to be the fate of everyone who contemplates it. The core reason for suicide is the deep sense that either the world or I myself has not lived up to my expectations – and isn’t about to. The emotional response to this belief is despair and depression of such depth and intensity that it overrides one’s natural fear of death. The core reason for anyone reaching this conclusion is that the world is a very difficult place. I believe that we all come in from a realm that feels beautifully connected and safe and, in any hierarchal culture, we find ourselves in an alternative realm where most people are very well trained in how to create disconnect with others.  Notably, this includes our parents, because in part that’s how they have been trained.  (Fortunately, on a sliding scale of success, parents and the community also reinforce our natural connecting/loving abilities – and so we end up split: each of us with a Jekyll loving side of ourselves along with a Hyde darkness.) As I describe in the  Free Download  life mastery class on my life coaching website, it’s also a savagely judgmental world we enter. This  is extremely hard on all of us – and yet so innate in our development that it puts us all on guard. It is, of course, the exact opposite experience of safe connection.    Our basic childhood responses for dealing with this world are the six coping mechanisms   I mentioned in my earlier blog . These are: fight, flight, seek approval, control, manipulate, or sacrifice yourself to “fix” or enable someone else. They don’t solve the underlying issues – in fact they make them worse – but they are survival mechanisms in the moment.  Beyond learning to rely on such inadequate life and relating tools, is the fact that psychologically as children we develop a self-image of who we want to be. If the world later supports that self-image, we tend to be at least okay, if not happy and satisfied. If it doesn’t, watch out! The awful truth about any self-image, however, is that it is an image. It is not our authentic self, though it may include elements of authenticity, such as our native talents and aptitudes. And a good rule of thumb is: t he more distant you are from your authentic self, the closer you are to suicide. For some of us, when our coping mechanisms no longer work to keep us from despair over how the world or ourselves have not met our expectations, including the expectations that come with our self-image, we might as well say goodbye to this world. The pain is just too deep to stay here. Now, here’s a story. Some years ago I met a young woman, 23, who was one of the most remarkable, loving, compassionate people I’d encountered. She lighted up a room with her essence and was literally incapable of forming a negative judgment on another person. I suggested to her that she must have had extraordinary and loving parenting.  And she said no, she had not, and in fact she had been suicidal a year and a half earlier and had failed in a serious attempt to kill herself. What healed her despair, she said, was a simple mental/emotional technique she learned at a free evening workshop a friend insisted she attend. Not having anything to do – her father was at this point paying her rent – she spent all day every day using this technique, one that deals with negative thoughts and emotions. A year later she was in the remarkable shape in which I met her. Moreover, her mind had become completely quiet- it didn’t chatter away all day long the way most of ours do. The technique was called Heartmath, and it is one of the modern tools life coaches like myself teach to help people with their emotional pain and negative mindsets. There are numerous others we teach as we coach people toward success in life and their careers, as no one technique works on everyone and it is best to offer a smorgasbord of tools. Russell Armstrong obviously either was not taught such skills or lacked an ally to help him find the will to use them, another job of life coaches and the therapists with whom we work in suicide-potential cases. The great thing about these tools is you don’t have to be suicidal to work with them. You only need a desire to move past whatever pain you might be in from some area of your life where you believe your expectations have not been met.    *** J ay Levin, the founder and former Editor-in Chief of the LA Weekly newspaper, has been a highly successful life and relationship coach and trainer for 12 years.  He recently made the core of his work available as classes in Life Rehab and Mastery and in Relationships. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills: Should the Show Go On?

It’s one thing to experience it, but then to watch it again on television and know that millions of other people are watching, it’s going to be tough. So said Taylor Armstrong last week about The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, a quote that referred to the focus of season two on her crumbling marriage to Russell Armstrong. Now, following his sudden, tragic death , Bravo is left to wonder: Should the show go on? The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 2 Trailer The season premiere is scheduled for September 5, but Andy Cohen – Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Development and host of Watch What Happens Live – admits he isn’t sure what the network will do: “We’re all still trying to process [the] very sad news, and looking at how to proceed with the series, which has finished primary production… we’ll let you know what we decide when we do. In the meantime, we’re sending our thoughts and prayers to Taylor and the rest of Russell’s family.” Might Bravo actually axe the season? We doubt it. Edit out inappropriate scenes? Air everything as filmed? What SHOULD it do? You tell us:

‘Madden NFL 12’: Rosters, Stats Updated, But Not Rules

Now that NFL lockout has ended, EA ‘able to flip the switch on roster updates pretty easily,’ rep says. By Russ Frushtick Madden NFL 12 Photo: EA Sports What would the world be like without football? Thankfully, fans needn’t concern themselves with such a horrible scenario (at least for another 10 years), as NFL owners and the NFL Players Association came to an agreement to end a months-long standoff that might have cancelled the 2011-2012 season. Because the lockout ended early enough, there will be no impact on the season itself, but what about this year’s installment of “Madden”? “Madden NFL 12” is scheduled to be released in about a month, but video games are often finalized months before they hit store shelves. Does that mean anyone who buys “Madden” will be playing with out-of-date rosters from before the lockout was even settled? Anthony Stevenson, the director of marketing for “Madden NFL 12,” discussed how the development team is planning to keep everything up-to-date for fans. “From the game’s standpoint, what everyone wants to know is rosters,” he said. “You’re taking what historically would be five months of offseason activity and you’re condensing it into what would be as little as two to three weeks. So, there are going to be a lot of roster moves. And these aren’t inconsequential moves: There’s Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb; these are moves that could shape a division. But we’re fortunate that we’re able to flip the switch on roster updates pretty easily.” Mike Young, the game’s creative director, confirmed that the rosters would be up-to-date not only at the beginning of the season, but also straight on through to the Super Bowl. “Our ratings people and our roster guys are going to be really, really busy,” he said. “Day one, anybody with an online connection is going to have all these moves and up-to-date rosters. All season long, we’ll support that really well.” Young confirmed that while the rosters and player stats will be up-to-date, EA won’t be able to implement all of the just-agreed-upon rules. “Some of the new rules we will not get in the game this year. Unfortunately, [the end of the lockout] happened too late,” he explained. “It’s kind of a complicated system to change with something like a patch.” As for which new rules didn’t make the cut, Young revealed, “The rookie cap stuff, a lot of the business part of football. So your Franchise mode will be using last year’s rules for another year. That was the only disappointment. But, as far as rosters, I think we’re the best at having those up-to-date.” Those roster updates will require an Internet connection for your console. If you don’t have your console hooked up to the Internet, Young suggested taking advantage of nearby gamers. “Take it over to your friend’s house, plug it in,” he recommended. “There are a lot of free trials for Xbox Live and PSN [PlayStation Network] is free. Update your game, save it to your hard drive, and bring it home. You need the rosters!” Certainly, fans who are just thrilled to have an NFL season will consider updated rosters the cherry on top. Jennifer Aniston Calls New York Gay Marriage Vote ‘Unbelievable’

‘Horrible Bosses’ co-star Jason Sudeikis suggests to MTV News that Jay-Z add a new verse to ‘Empire State of Mind’ after Friday’s passage. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston Photo: MTV News In the hours after New York’s historic passage of a same-sex marriage bill on Friday, the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, the site of the riots in 1969 that galvanized the gay-rights movement, became a euphoric gathering place for supporters to celebrate the development on the eve of Gay Pride Week. The news reverberated around the globe, with celebrities like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Ellen DeGeneres sharing in the excitement. And the next morning in midtown Manhattan, just a few miles away from Stonewall, the stars of the upcoming comedy “Horrible Bosses” were nothing short of ecstatic about the events. “It’s great! I thought it was unbelievable,” Jennifer Aniston told MTV News. “So exciting in this time and that it happens to be Gay Pride weekend. What a great weekend.” Aniston went on to joke that she could end up taking a trip down to Stonewall to see the action up close. “I might,” she teased. “It won’t be crowded.” “Saturday Night Live” star Jason Sudeikis said the gay-rights bill is great news for everyone — except one man: “The only person I feel bad for is Jay-Z, because he’s going to have to write a new verse for that song, ‘Empire State of Mind,’ because New York just got a little more kick-ass!” Those sentiments echoed what celebs had been saying for hours on Twitter. “NEW YORK! I [love] U! You’re OFFICIALLY the coolest place on the planet!” Perry tweeted. Gaga chimed in on Twitter, “Rejoice New York, and propose. We did it! The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice + equality.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill in the comments below. Pottermore: Our Top-Five Wish List For J.K. Rowling’s New Site

‘Harry Potter’ author’s site is still cloaked in mystery, but there are a few things we’d like to see on her Web creation. By Kara Warner J.K. Rowling Photo: Daniel Barry/Getty Images There’s a lot of “Harry Potter”-related excitement going around these days, what with the release of the eighth and final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” in just a few weeks, and our own Harry Potter World Cup heating up. And on Thursday morning (June 23) in London, “Potter” creator J.K. Rowling made an official announcement about the mysterious “Pottermore” website she introduced last week. The site will deliver a free, online reading experience including, according to a press release, “extensive new material about the characters, places and objects in the much-loved stories” and a digital capability in which “the storyline will be brought to life with sumptuous newly commissioned illustrations and interactive ‘Moments’ through which you can navigate.” “[It’s] a way I can be creative in a medium that didn’t exist when I started the books back in 1990,” Rowling told reporters during the press conference. That’s exciting stuff for “Potter” fans, considering the books have long since been completed and the final film hits theaters this summer. But at this point, with no Muggle having yet explored the site, we don’t know exactly what Pottermore will offer. Here are five things we hope we can see and do while playing in Rowling’s latest fantastical creation — now or in the future. Open Class/Character Development System No matter your house, heritage or O.W.L. scores, with the appropriate amount of training or playing time, you too can become an esteemed member of the wizarding community. No matter how basic or inexperienced you are when you begin exploring “Pottermore,” there should be opportunities for advancement and/or shifting skill sets. If you want to be an animagus, an auror, a healer, or even a professional Quidditch player, you need only put in the time. Quidditch Speaking of professional Quidditch players, there ought to be a recreational area in “Pottermore” where characters learn, play and eventually compete against one another at the hugely popular game. Instead of pitting competitors and teams against one another based solely on their houses, it would be great for players to be able to assemble themselves into teams. Virtual Place to Unwind, Be Entertained One of the main reasons Rowling’s masterworks have so many millions of fans, is because she’s created a world so magical and alluring, that we all dream of apparating into the Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer or taking a walk through Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. It would be great if Pottermore featured a competition-free area for socializing in and around virtual versions of Rowling’s most beloved fictional shops and assorted hotspots. Annual “Pottermore” Gatherings Although Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter is currently a perfect place to mix and mingle with fellow Potterphiles, we would love an annual event in the vein of GenCon or Comic-Con, where fans from all over the world meet to share in everything Harry Potter. In addition to pointed panel discussions on a variety of subjects, why not also host a few live action duels in the spirit of the tri-wizard tournament? Maybe an attempt at a grounded game of Quidditch or two? Special Guest Stars And/Or Participants It’s nearly impossible to assemble the entire “Harry Potter” film casts for “Pottermore” participation, but perhaps before they all move on from their Potter associations the actors can record special interactive greetings and messages, to be carefully placed throughout “Pottermore”? Maybe Daniel Radcliffe and company can pre-record video messages of encouragement for players? Alan Rickman could instruct a brief beginner-level Defense Against the Dark Arts Class? We’ll even settle for video clips from the movies popping up every now and again. Also, if Rowling is taking the time to make this special announcement, we’re hoping she’s going to stay involved enough that she’ll consider recording some messages as well. So what did we miss? What do you want from Pottermore? Tell us in the comments! Chris Brown Hits The Studio With M.I.A.

Singer tweets about the session, which also included producer Polow da Don. By James Montgomery Chris Brown Photo: Jason Kempin/ WireImage Chris Brown is branching out. His F.A.M.E. album sees him expanding his repertoire, and he’s already straddled the line between R&B and dance with “Beautiful People.” Now, he’s looking to push things even further. Though, to be honest, we’re not exactly sure in what direction. Brown recently logged studio time with the unlikely combination of M.I.A. and Polow da Don, a collaboration he broke on his Twitter account. “Was in the studio with the incredible M.I.A. and Polow,” he wrote. “Amazing artist[s]! Real talent!” Polow further confirmed the collabo on his Twitter account, and, from the sound of things, the music they made was revelatory. “In the lab wit the great Chris Brown and the incredible M.I.A.,” Polow wrote (in ALL CAPS). “Thank you dear lord!” Polow added , “I’ve waited on this moment my whole career … I feel this song in my soul!” For her part, M.I.A. remained silent about the music, but did mention that she was “shootin’ hoops” with Brown and the producer. It’s not known if the music they collaborated on is meant for a re-release of Brown’s F.A.M.E., the follow-up to M.I.A.’s 2010 album MAYA or something else entirely. Emails to reps for both artists were not responded to by press time. Brown is currently on tour in Australia, where, judging by his Twitter feed, he’s taking time to see a whole lot of movies and playing basketball with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League. What are you expecting from a Chris Brown/ M.I.A. collabo? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Chris Brown M.I.A.

Beastie Boys’ ‘Fight For Your Right Revisited’: Five Things You Might Have Missed

Star-studded film is packed with nods to the Beasties’ past and present. By James Montgomery John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black in the “Fight For Your Right Revisited” video Photo: Capitol Records By now, you’ve probably watched — and subsequently re-watched — the Beastie Boys’ new “Fight For Your Right Revisited” film, which premiered at midnight Thursday morning (April 21) on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia. In theory, it’s a tongue-in-cheek retrospective on the Beasties’ early License To Ill days, picking up where their sublimely stoopid “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” video left off, following Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA — as played by Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride, respectively — on a drunken spree that culminates in an epic dance battle against their future selves (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black, just in case you’re keeping score at home). But really, it works just as well as a rather-involved exercise in cameo spotting, as seemingly everyone in the universe pops up for a frame or three. Thankfully, the Beasties were nice enough to include a list of co-stars in the closing credits. Our favorites include Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci as the bewildered parents who interrogate the Beasties post-party, Will Arnett as a businessman who gives a shout-out to “Arrested Development” (“COME ON!”) and Orlando Bloom’s inexplicable three-second cameo as a window washer in a Def Jam windbreaker. But there seems to be a batch of uncredited cameos too — we’re pretty sure we saw Danny Masterson and Zach Galifianakis in there. In fact, outside of some of Michael Jackson’s biggest videos (“Liberian Girl” and “Remember the Time” come to mind), “Fight For Your Right Revisited” might very well be the most celeb-heavy video of all time. But, as we said, “Fight For Your Right” is also so much more. And while you were busy trying to keep track of all the cameos, you probably failed to notice some of the film’s subtler moments — nods to the Beasties’ past and present, the majority of which pass by with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it speed. Here are five we’ve noticed. And while we’ve watched the thing no less than a dozen times, we’re sure there are some we missed. Let us know in the comments below! Chateau Ted el Michel D

Zack Snyder May or May Not Return for 300 Sequel

Will the failure of Sucker Punch and the development of Superman: Man of Steel prevent Zack Snyder from being involved in the now-untitled sequel to 300 (formerly called Xerxes ). “I don’t see us waiting two years to make the movie,” said producer Mark Canton to MTV at WonderCon, referring to Snyder’s commitments to Clark Kent. And yet, “Zack is very much at the helm of it at the same time.” Got it. Thanks for clarifying. [ MTV ]
