Nicki Minaj Says Drake Was Her ‘First Choice’ For ‘Moment 4 Life’

MC explains the fairytale arc of her Drake-assisted video to MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj already has a reputation for pulling off shocking outfits and spitting even more insane stuff on her records. However, her latest video, “Moment 4 Life,” may surprise some of her die-hard fans, as Minaj swaps her edgy costumes for graceful, ladylike looks and runs off with her Prince Charming — in this case, it’s Young Money bestie Drake — and gets married under a firework display. Shortly after the premiere of the video on MTV on Thursday evening, Minaj sat down with MTV News’ Sway and explained the development of the fairytale narrative and said that catching her fans off guard is just what she was looking for. “I definitely went back and forth with [director] Chris [Robinson] a lot. I just wanted it to be something a little bit unexpected,” she said. Minaj added she initially had a more bottle-poppin’ vibe in mind, which was eventually replaced by the romantic story line. “First I wanted it to be like, really just a celebration and a party,” she admitted. “But I had the idea of making it more of a romance. Chris just sort of took those little bits and pieces and ran with it, and then it became sort of this big Cinderella thing.” The concept of the video may have evolved over time, but Minaj said that her first choice to jump on the track was always Drizzy, who provided her with the instrumental. “Drake came to the studio one night and he brought me a whole bunch of beats when I was wrapping up the [ Pink Friday ] album. This ‘Moment 4 Life’ was one of the beats, and he was like, ‘Just do whatever. Whatever you pick, I’m just gonna rock with you.’ I had the beat for a while, maybe, like, over a month, and I was just sitting on it — pause — and next thing you know, I was shooting [the video for] ‘Right Thru Me’ and I played this beat for everybody in my dressing room, and I was like, ‘Do you like this beat?’ Everybody said, ‘Yeah.’ And I just went to the studio the next day, and I laid the hook and I sent it to Drake and I didn’t know if he was gonna like it, blah blah blah, and he was like, ‘I love it.’ ” Drizzy mused that their parallel journeys as budding hip-pop superstars made the inspirational track a perfect fit. “He was like, ‘It makes sense for me and you.’ We both are at a place right now that we feel like we wish we could have this moment for life,” she recalled. “We don’t know what’s gonna happen next year, but this moment feels amazing. He was obviously my first choice to be on it.” What do you think of Nicki and Drake in “Moment 4 Life”? Let us know in the comments! Will.I.Am Named Intel’s ‘Director Of Creative Innovation’

Black Eyed Peas mastermind says he’ll ‘co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain.’ By James Montgomery Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images You might think that with his busy schedule of winning Grammys and wearing things made out of Legos , will.i.am wouldn’t exactly be looking for a day job. And yet, he’s just landed one: “Director of creative innovation” for Intel. On Tuesday, Intel — the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturer — announced they are partnering with the Black Eyed Peas mastermind on a “multi-year, hands-on creative and technology collaboration,” which, much like Lady Gaga’s deal with Polaroid , will lead to the development and creation of new products. “Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity,” Will said in a statement. “Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing.” Intel added that, in his new role with the company, Will is set to “collaborate on many creative and technology endeavors … that may include such devices as laptops, smart phones and tablets.” He also will create new music expressly for the company. “We’re thrilled to tap into the limitless creativity will.i.am brings to the table. He’s not only a brilliant artist and producer, but also an innovator pushing the bounds of technology professionally and personally,” said Deborah Conrad, Intel’s vice president and chief marketing officer. “Our partnership … is a prime example of how we want to convey and deliver the Intel experience. It’s imperative that Intel and our innovations are kept in front of the global youth culture that embraces new devices and new forms of communication and entertainment.” Related Artists Will.I.Am Black Eyed Peas

Making It Rain On Them Hoes: will.i.am Lands New Gig As Creative Director Of Intel

The Black Eyed Peas may not be able to fill an arena anymore, but that doesn’t mean will.i.am isn’t getting his paper. Intel Corp., the world’s largest chipmaker, said Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am will become a creative director, contributing music and helping in the development of devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets. The Grammy Award-winning musician already has an Intel badge and was introduced today at the company’s internal sales and marketing conference in Anaheim, California. Intel, known for its rows of identical grey cubicles and worldwide network of robot-filled factories, is trying to make sure its products stay at the center of future trends in technology. A relationship with will.i.am helps Intel marry entertainment and technology, according to Deborah Conrad, the company’s head of marketing. “It’s imperative that Intel and our innovations are kept in front of the global youth culture that embraces new devices and new forms of communication and entertainment,” Conrad said. Will.i.am will be involved in a multiyear “hands on creative and technology collaboration,” Santa Clara, California- based Intel said. The company isn’t giving any more details of the partnership. Intel’s chips run more than 80 percent of the world’s personal computers. The company is trying to parlay that dominance into a foothold in the faster-growing markets for smartphones and tablet computers. That’s not too shaby for a boy from Inglewood. Source

Kelsey Grammer Signs Reality TV Deal

Kelsey Grammer is an Emmy winner and Tony Award nominee. But he’s best known these days for being the adulterous husband of Camille Grammer . How does the former sitcom star plan on changing that image? By joining the reality TV game himself, of course. Forehead slap . Kelsey has teamed up with producer Stella Bulochnikov-Stolper to form G3 Productions. According to Variety , the company will focus on the development of unscripted television shows. It’s unknown if Grammer himself will anchor one of these programs. “I knew that Kelsey loved this space and would love to pop some big shows,” Bulochnikov-Stolper said. “The idea that he would lend his name and brain and star power to working on some formats was so exciting to me.” Seriously, someone needs to call up Frasier Crane for some career advice. Now.

Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Alex Lambert Not Homeless, Rep Says

Singer tweeted that he was living on the streets of Los Angeles. By Gil Kaufman Alex Lambert Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images On the eve of the season 10 debut of “American Idol,” one of last season’s most lovable losers has gotten himself back into the news. Perhaps you remember (though probably not) stage-fright-wracked singer Alex Lambert , the talented but nervous guitar strummer whose ouster unleashed an online petition of support from more than 13,000 fans who wanted him reinstated to the show. Well, on Monday night, Lambert posted a string of tweets in which he claimed he’d been forced to live on the streets of Los Angeles since October, when he wrapped up his stint on the reality series “If I Can Dream,” the online show he fled to after being booted from “Idol.” After chatting with some fellow fans and former “Idol” pals about his frustrations with the music biz, Lambert dropped this bombshell: “Ever since ‘IICD’ ended I’ve been kinda homeless! Sleepin on the street and behind buildings. I have a choice to stay and pursue my career or go back to texas and not do music! I’m usually a strong person but I can’t take it anymore. I’ve been goin to coffee shops and other stores so I can tweet to my snaf! Because to be honest! You guys are all I really have!” According to Entertainment Weekly, however, things are not nearly as grim as they might seem. A spokesperson for an “Idol” production company, 19 Entertainment, which manages many of the show’s contestants, confirmed that the tweets did come from Lambert but denied that the 20-year-old Texas singer is sleeping behind dumpsters. “He’s not homeless. I don’t know where that came from,” the unidentified rep told EW, explaining that there’s good reason to believe that Lambert should have the ability to pay for housing thanks to his development deal with 19. “He’s on a retainer, and he’s getting money every month,” the spokesperson said. “He’s working on demos. He’s with writers, he’s working on music. … He’s not homeless. How could he be texting? How could he be going into [the] recording studio and sleeping on the streets? There’s no record deal yet, but hopefully these demos … something could come from that.” Perhaps someone at 19 had a chat with Lambert about his down and out in Beverly Hills claims, since he updated his status on Tuesday afternoon, writing, “Sorry for the miscommunication 😉 I’m just fine! MAHALO!” And even though he claimed to be living on the streets, he asked his followers not to feel sorry for him, adding, “I know a lot of people think I tweeted my living situation for publicity! But I don’t give a damn about fame!” But then he muddied the waters again with some follow-up tweets in which he stated emphatically, “I’m real! And I don’t lie! and I would never lie to y’all! (y’all being my supporters who got my back through thick and thin) F— yeah I was … sleepin outside! That sh– sucks too! I’m goin back home to get my sh– together! But I will be back! And I’m comin strong! LETS DO THIS!” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. ‘The Hobbit’ Adds Andy Serkis, Eyes Ian McKellen

Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett already signed for long-awaited movie. By Eric Ditzian Andy Serkis in “The Lord of the Rings” Photo: New Line Cinema After years stuck in the development doldrums, “The Hobbit” has been picking up steam in recent weeks, with a slew of business deals and casting moves in advance of a planned February production start. On the heels of Elijah Wood’s recent deal to reprise his “Lord of the Rings” role as Frodo, Deadline New York reports that Andy Serkis has signed on to once again play Gollum in the two “Hobbit” films. What’s more, it’s looking like Ian McKellen is poised to reprise the part of Gandalf in what’s being called “a major role” in the new films. McKellen has been eyeing a return to Middle-earth for years. Back in the fall of 2009, he told MTV News that “Gandalf is a fantastic part and I long to do it” and that he prefers the character’s “Hobbit” version to his “LOTR” incarnation. “He was more humane somehow,” he added. “He was the guy who liked to hang out with the Hobbits and drink too much and smoke too much.” McKellen, Serkis and their cohorts, it seems, won’t be the only “LOTR” faces to pop up in “The Hobbit.” Cate Blanchett has already signed on to play Galadriel , Christopher Lee is in talks for Saruman, and Ian Holm is in talks for the elder Bilbo Baggins, whose younger version will be played by Martin Freeman. There’s no word yet if Orlando Bloom, who portrayed Legolas in “LOTR,” will return for the new project. “The Hobbit” is set to begin shooting in 3-D in New Zealand in February — a full seven years after the conclusion of the “LOTR” trilogy. Few thought it would take this long. “I think they’re intending to release it on Christmas 2011,” McKellen told us in late ’09, in what would turn out to be wishful thinking. “If they’re going to do that, they’re going to have to get moving on shooting it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hobbit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
