‘Tron Legacy’ Star Olivia Wilde Talks Sequel Plans

Actress who plays Quorra hints Cillian Murphy’s character will return. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund in “Tron Legacy” Photo: Disney We’ve long known that Disney has been positioning “Tron Legacy” as the first installment in a revamped take on the dude-gets-sucked-into-a-computer concept the studio pioneered in the early 1980s. Back in April, eight months before the new film was set to hit theaters, news broke that a script for another film already was in the works. ” ‘Legacy’ definitely ends in a way that there are opportunities to continue the story,” producer Justin Springer told MTV News at the time. Now that “Legacy” has hit the multiplex and the public at large has gotten a chance to see the fresh take on “Tron,” the question becomes: Where will the story go from here? We recently asked Olivia Wilde, who plays the digital creature Quorra. Beware of major spoilers below! As we find out at the end of the film, Quorra departs the computer world and materializes as a human being in the real world for the very first time. Wilde told us that if a sequel kicks into gear, fans should expect the story to mine her fish-out-of-mainframe tale. “I’m so thrilled to play with Quorra in the human world. It would be sort of like ‘Splash,’ ” she said, referring to the ’80s comedy starring Daryl Hannah as a mermaid unleashed in Manhattan. “I want to see her whispering to laptops and hugging toasters. … There’s a whole other chapter ahead.” Fans should also stay tuned for further development of Cillian Murphy’s character. Murphy plays Edward Dillinger, a rising star at ENCOM, the tech company at the center of the franchise’s mythology, and the son of one of the first film’s key villains. Murphy shows up in just one scene in “Legacy,” but his role is likely to expand in the future. “Cillian Murphy we were so lucky to have in this film. His part in ‘Tron Legacy’ is so mysterious and cool,” Wilde said. “His role really fits into the mythology of ‘Tron,’ the corrupt environment of ENCOM. It just shows you that this fight is far from over.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Sony’s Hana Mado Solar Panel Brings Fun Back to Solar Cells

Photo via Gizmag The ability of a solar cell to turn light into electricity is exciting. However, solar cells themselves are boring, and usually ugly too. That’s one of the reasons why integrating them into fashion and home decor has been so difficult. But Sony aims to change that with a new product called Hana Mado, or “Flower Window,” introduced at the Eco Products 2010 exhibition in Tokyo last weekend. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

92% of Afghans have never heard of 9/11, think U.S. is in country to "destroy Islam"

Note the siege mentality: why the leap to the conclusion that the U.S. must have gratuitously entered Afghanistan in order to “destroy Islam”? And with the U.S. building hospitals and schools and roads in Afghanistan, the notion is laughable — but that never stopped the conspiracy paranoia before. “Think tank: 92% of Afghans never heard of 9/11,” by Daniel Tencer for Raw Story, November 19: 'Fewer than one in 10 Afghans are aware of the 9/11 attacks and their precipitation of the war in Afghanistan, says a study from an international think tank. A report (PDF) from the International Council on Security and Development (ICOS) shows that 92 percent of those surveyed had never heard of the coordinated multiple attacks on US soil on September 11, 2001. It also shows that four in 10 Afghans believe the US is on their soil in order to “destroy Islam or occupy Afghanistan.” To be sure, the survey can't claim to be definitive: It only canvassed men, and relied primarily on respondents from Helmand and Kandahar, the two most war-torn provinces in the country. But the results nonetheless show that Western forces fighting insurgents in Afghanistan have largely failed to connect with the local population. “We need to explain to the Afghan people why we are here, and both show and convince them that their future is better with us than with the Taliban,” ICOS lead field researcher Norine MacDonald said in a statement….' Good luck with that, Norine. added by: crystalman

Review of Four Decades of Scientific Literature Concludes Lower Atmosphere is Warming

The troposphere, the lower part of the atmosphere closest to the Earth, is warming and this warming is broadly consistent with both theoretical expectations and climate models, according to a new scientific study that reviews the history of understanding of temperature changes and their causes in this key atmospheric layer. Scientists at NOAA, the NOAA-funded Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS), the United Kingdom Met Office, and the University of Reading in the United Kingdom contributed to the paper, “Tropospheric Temperature Trends: History of an Ongoing Controversy,” a review of four decades of data and scientific papers to be published today by Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews – Climate Change, a peer-reviewed journal. The paper documents how, since the development of the very first climate models in the early 1960s, the troposphere has been projected to warm along with the Earth’s surface because of the increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This expectation has not significantly changed even with major advances in climate models and is in accord with our basic physical understanding of atmospheric processes. In the 1990s, observations did not show the troposphere, particularly in the tropics, to be warming, even though surface temperatures were rapidly warming. This lack of tropospheric warming was used by some to question both the reality of the surface warming trend and the reliability of climate models as tools. This new paper extensively reviews the relevant scientific analyses — 195 cited papers, model results and atmospheric data sets — and finds that there is no longer evidence for a fundamental discrepancy and that the troposphere is warming. “Looking at observed changes in tropospheric temperature and climate model expectations over time, the current evidence indicates that no fundamental discrepancy exists, after accounting for uncertainties in both the models and observations,” said Peter Thorne, a senior scientist with CICS in Asheville, N.C., and a senior researcher at North Carolina State University. CICS is a consortium jointly led by the University of Maryland and North Carolina State University. cont. added by: JanforGore

Kanye West Pushed For ‘More Douche Bag’ On ‘Runaway,’ Pusha T Recalls

Clipse MC breaks down the making of the Yeezy track on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Pusha T Photo: Sohyung Kang/MTV News Sometimes, there is a certain element that can take a song to another level, and according to Pusha T, Kanye West had a very specific idea about the secret ingredient needed to make “Runaway” a memorable track. The G.O.O.D. Music MC recently revealed to MTV News that ‘Ye was adamant about packing as many “douche bags” into their collaboration as possible. “I’m writing a verse, and I come back to the table, and it’s something that I’m feeling, and he’s like, ‘Naw, but I need more douche bag.’ And I’m like, ‘All right, man, c’mon.’ So I go back, and he’s like, ‘Naw, more douche bag!’ He’s screaming at me ‘more douche bag’ at this point,” Push said during his “RapFix Live” interview Thursday (November 18) about crafting the douche-bag-toasting standout from ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “I just really had to, like, take myself out of it a little bit and then put … the perspective of the guy … who thinks he can fix it, but he’s not being preventative.” Push said the song developed organically but that Yeezy had unexpectedly stumbled upon a subject the Clipse MC was very familiar with: the art of douche-baggery. “It starts from a conversation. We’re talking, and he’s like, ‘I like your perspective on that. Put a verse to that.’ What he didn’t know was [that] I was going through my own relationship turmoil at the time,” Push revealed. “I was being a douche bag,” he said, adding, vaguely, that he was doing “whatever wrong you can do” in a relationship. Although the concept arose naturally enough, Push said ‘Ye was relentless about making the final product just right. “I’ve never worked with anybody like him,” Push said. “He just pushes you and pushes you and pushes you. With ‘Runaway,’ I think I wrote that four times.” While Yeezy lab sessions had their moments of intensity, Push said developing a partnership with the G.O.O.D. Music impresario easily grew out of an excursion to West’s tropical outpost. “It started from a three-day trip to Hawaii,” he said of becoming a part of the G.O.O.D. Music fold. “It was supposed to be a three-day trip, [and] it ended up being a month, just collaborating on his album. The ‘Runaway’ song was done, a couple of the G.O.O.D. Friday joints were done. ‘So Appalled’ was done. It was just a vibe thing. We got in there, and we just started vibing.” Push said Yeezy was also confident that joining forces with the Virginia spitter would be a partnership with the potential to shut down the game — or at least the 2010 MTV VMA stage , where the pair premiered the record. “He was just [like], ‘You know we about to kill this, right? It’s about to be a real problem. This is gonna be, like, one of the biggest moments right now,’ ” Push remembered. “He was like, ‘C’mon, the record’s crazy, I’m debuting it here. When people see us together, we about to shock. We about to hurt some people.’ ” What do you think a recording session with Kanye West would be like? Let us know in the comments! GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING: BREAKING: Senate votes cloture on S 510 – must now be voted on in 60 days

By a vote of 74 to 25, at noon today, the U.S. Senate voted for cloture on S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, which means it must now be voted on in the full Senate within 60 days. All amendments to the controversial food control bill must be completed by that time. One of S 510′s supporters, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, opposed cloture because modifications to the bill do not reflect its original intent, he said on C-SPAN. Chambliss fully supports giving the FDA more power over the US food supply, but is unhappy with the Manager’s Amendment submitted in August. He objects to the small farm exclusion on the grounds that the $500,000 annual gross revenue limit is an arbitrary number that is too quickly reached by small farms. He called for numerous amendments to the bill as it appears today. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio supports S 510, and called out the statistics by the Centers for Disease Control that report there are 76 million foodborne illnesses a year, with 5,000 resulting in death. What Brown did not say was that the FDA — the very agency further empowered by S 510 — is responsible for the approval of pharmaceutical drugs that results in 100,000 deaths a year. None of the supporters of S 510 will acknowledge the corrupt nature of the Food and Drug Administration. Monsanto executives now work at the FDA or on President’s Obama’s Food Safety Task Force. What legislators continue to ignore from the public is that we do not support giving federal agencies even more power — especially over something as inherently private as food choices. None of the legislators will discuss the FDA raids on natural food operations which sickened no one, while it allowed Wright County Egg to sicken people for decades before finally taking action. Yesterday, Senator Bob Casey informed his Pennsylvania constituents that the$1.6 billion price tag for S 510 will stop food smuggling in the United States. I kid you not: “These provisions add personnel to detect, track and remove smuggled food and call for the development and implementation of strategies to stop food from being smuggled into the United States.” Is food smuggling a problem in the United States? Well, the “biggest food smuggling case in the history of the U.S.” busted wide open in September. Eleven Chinese and German executives were indicted for bringing in $40 million worth of commercial grade honey over a five year period, reportedly to avoid paying $80 million in import fees. (No wonder they tried smuggling.) That amounts to 3 percent of the 1.35 billion-dollar honey market over a five-year period. Since that was the biggest food smuggling bust, food smuggling is not the problem. Clearly. It hardly seems worth it for the US taxpayer to cough up $1.6 billion so the FDA can stop such illegal activities, especially in our current economic recession. Blogger Steve Green interprets the S 510 smuggling language to mean: “It would allow the government, under Maritime Law, to define the introduction of any food into commerce (even direct sales between individuals) as smuggling into “the United States.” Since under that law, the US is a corporate entity and not a location, “entry of food into the US” covers food produced anywhere within the land mass of this country and “entering into” it by virtue of being produced.”
