‘Men In Black’ Shoot Down ‘Avengers’ At Holiday Weekend Box Office

‘Avengers’ finally forced to #2 after nearly a month at the top. By Ryan J. Downey Will Smith in “Men In Black 3” Photo: Sony Pictures It wasn’t Loki, an army of otherworldly Chitauri nor any other super-villain that finally defeated Captain America and his pals. A satiric adaptation of a 1970s soap opera and a big-budget action flick based on a board game tried and failed. Ultimately, it was another franchise with comic book roots that ended the nearly month-long reign of “The Avengers” at the top of the box office, as “Men in Black 3” became the #1 movie in America with an estimated $70 million debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The third entry in the Will Smith/ Tommy Lee Jones franchise, based on a short-lived comic series from the early 1990s, took in another $133.2 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $203.2 million. Box-office prognosticators had predicted a somewhat stronger opening for the 3-D film, which carried a reported production budget near $250 million. Enthusiasm and nostalgia for the 1997 original, about a pair of criminal-alien-busting special agents, remains high. But the 2002 sequel was poorly received by critics, who were a bit kinder to “MIB 3,” which added Josh Brolin as a younger version of Jones’ character in time-travel scenes. The first “Men in Black” made $589 million around the world. Its follow-up trailed behind with $442 million. The opening weekend for “MIB 3” wasn’t far off from “MIB 2.” Will Smith, top-billed in hits like “Hancock” and “I Am Legend,” broke a four-year hiatus from the screen with “Men in Black 3.” Critics were not kind (the film had a 67 percent score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes at press time) and audiences who saw the movie assigned it a D-plus CinemaScore. “Chernobyl Diaries” was the only other widely released new film over the holiday weekend. The low-budget horror tale was #6 with just $9.3 million. “Men in Black 3” was able to do what “Dark Shadows” and “Battleship” failed to do in recent weeks by knocking “The Avengers” to #2, though Marvel’s superhero team-up flick still generated gigantic numbers considering how long it’s been in theaters. “The Avengers” earned another $46.9 million over the four-day weekend (and crossed the $500 million mark on Saturday, making it the first movie to ever do so) for a total of $523.6 million. Not adjusted for inflation, “The Avengers” is now the fourth-biggest movie of all time, behind “Avatar,” “Titanic” and the final entry in the “Harry Potter” movie franchise. “Battleship” sunk even further at the box office, dropping 57 percent to #3 after a less-than-impressive debut last weekend. The blend of high-seas action and sci-fi made $13.8 million over the holiday for a domestic total of $47.3 million. “Battleship” has made $232.7 million overseas but has earned even less than Taylor Kitsch’s last film, notorious big-budget bomb “John Carter,” over the same amount of time in theaters. “The Dictator” was #4 during its second weekend with $11.8 million for a $43.6 million total. “Dark Shadows” was #5 with $9.4 million for a total of $64.9 million. The latest Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton collaboration won’t make anywhere near the box-office coin of films like “Alice in Wonderland,” though it did manage to pass “Sweeney Todd” over the weekend. The movie carried a reported production budget of $150 million. In the limited-release world, “Moonrise Kingdom” collected $669,000 from just four theaters over four days. That estimate puts it ahead of “Dreamgirls” with the highest per screen average debut of any live action film. That number is also higher than filmmaker Wes Anderson’s previous best, “The Royal Tenenbaums.” Also in four theaters over the weekend: “The Intouchables,” a French film that has already made $340 million worldwide, grossed $137,438 through Monday. One of the stars of “The Avengers,” Chris Hemsworth (Thor), will appear in theaters again this weekend as one of the title characters in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” The movie co-stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron as the evil queen. It was directed by newcomer Rupert Sanders. Sacha Baron Cohen Built His ‘Dictator’ From ‘The Ground Up’

‘He’s been to comedy what Marlon Brando was to acting,’ director Larry Charles tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Sacha Baron Cohen in “The Dictator” Photo: Paramount Pictures For each of Sacha Baron Cohen’s onscreen conquests, one man has been there every step of the way. Larry Charles made a name for himself as supervising producer and occasional writer for “Seinfeld,” but his work directing Baron Cohen’s films brought him a new kind of recognition. Baron Cohen asked Charles once again to helm his film with “The Dictator,” and MTV News spoke with the director in the lead-up to the film’s release. One of the biggest challenges posed by their new film was the creation of an entirely new character. Unlike Baron Cohen’s previous films, which came out of his work on “Da Ali G Show,” the writers of “The Dictator” created the concept for General Aladeen with the comedian in mind. This meant that Baron Cohen had to work through the specifics of Aladeen to make him as fully realized. “Unlike the other movies, where Sacha had a character that he had been working on for years and years and years and was to hone, he knew how this character walked and talked and reacted to every situation when it came to Bruno or Borat or Ali G, but this is a brand-new character,” Charles said. “He had to create this character from the ground up, from the accent to the look to the body language. We needed to give him as much time as possible to evolve that character to where he was ready for the camera.” Additionally, “The Dictator” did away with Baron Cohen’s old format of real-life people interacting with the character. The more traditional structure allowed Charles to get additional takes with Baron Cohen for the first time. “I had never had a second take with Sacha in any of the movies,” he said. “We would do one take. Now that one take may last eight hours for some of the scenes we did in ‘Borat’ or ‘Bruno.’ Eight straight hours of him having to do a character. Eight straight hours of filming it. Here we didn’t have to do that.” Considering that some of the “Borat” and “Bruno” interviews resulted in lawsuits and physical threats, Charles said the “Dictator” set was indeed much safer, but that security came at a price. “It’s certainly physically safer, no question about it,” Charles said. “To be in the United States with a full crew and security and have some kind of permission to be there and not encounter the hostility that we have encountered all over the world and here. At the same time, the danger here is complacency.” The real reason Charles has been willing to work with Baron Cohen repeatedly is that he genuinely believes him to be a comedic genius. “I really classify him in that rare company of comic geniuses. I think there have been a handful of them in film and television history,” Charles said. “He has changed the face of comedy like few other people have. He’s been to comedy what Marlon Brando was to acting. Comedy will be different after him. You can’t go back to some of the old-fashioned ways after you’ve seen Sacha do his thing at his best.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dictator.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

The Avengers Sink Battleship at the Box Office

Another Monday morning, and thus another look at what carnage The Avengers has wrought at the weekend box office. And while things aren’t as bad as they may look at first for Battleship and the rest of the competition, they’re not what you’d call pretty. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $55,057,000 ($457,078,000) Screens: 4,249 (PSA $12,958) Weeks: 3 (Change: -46.6%) Marvel’s megahit settled into No. 10 all-time in terms of domestic gross, No. 6 all-time in terms of global gross, and became the highest-grossing US release ever for Disney… in three weeks . It should wind up in top three in all the major box-office categories by the time it’s done, leaving unanswered only the question of where it will stand two months from now against The Dark Knight Rises . Which I’m sure is a question you are very much preoccupying yourself with. Anyway, hats off to all. 2. Battleship Gross: $25,300,000 (new) Screens: 3,690 (PSA: $6,856) Weeks: 1 Did Hasbro and Universal want a better domestic turnout for their huge-budget board-game spectacular? Of course they did. Is this the worst-case scenario for either/or/both? Hardly, especially after a foreign run that has already pulled in $215 million. John Carter it’s not , though don’t be surprised if you happen to see at least one head rolling around the studio lot sometime in the next or two. Whose will it be? Place your wager in the comments! 3. The Dictator Gross: $17,415,000 ($24,456,000) Screens: 3,008 (PSA $5,790) Weeks: 1 On the one hand, not a terrible showing on a congested weekend for an R-rated comedy full of Sacha Baron Cohen’s usual shtick. On the other, shtick aside, we finally get an original script not based on a board-game, a self-help book, a ’60s TV show, etc., and it lurches quietly into third place. I feel like we need to support these things on principle, folks. So what if you only laugh four times in 80 minutes? It’s better than throwing up in your mouth four times or renouncing moviegoing altogether, no? OK, don’t answer that. 4. Dark Shadows Gross: $12,770,000 ($50,908,000) Screens: 3,755 (PSA $3,401) Weeks: 2 (Change: -57.0%) Oy: A 57 percent drop in week two for a Johnny Depp film — his worst since Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End plunged 61.5 percent in 2007. Of course, that was after a $139 million Memorial Day opening , so… yeah. Perspective. Not good. 5. What to Expect When You’re Expecting Gross: $10,500,000 (new) Screens: 3,021 (PSA: $3,476) Weeks: 1 Yikes! And the reviews were so good , too. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. ‘The Dictator’ Is ’90 Percent Improv,’ Anna Faris Says

‘You sort of go with it and wait until somebody calls cut,’ actress tells MTV News of the ‘general chaos’ on set of the Sacha Baron Cohen flick. By Fallon Prinzivalli Sacha Baron Cohen and Anna Faris in “The Dictator” Photo: Paramount When MTV News spoke with Anna Faris about her role in the upcoming film, it was everything you’d expect from an interview with the comic actress. Her humorous disposition led to quite a few laughs while we got the scoop on her latest flick. In the movie, Faris plays Zoey, a liberal idealist with a good heart who runs an organic, vegan grocery store in Brooklyn. When she meets General Aladeen (Baron Cohen) at a protest, she thinks he’s a refugee and jumps at the opportunity to help him. When we spoke to the “Scary Movie” actress, she opened up about the challenges of her role (in particular having to grow out her underarm hair), Baron Cohen’s stunt at the 2012 Academy Awards and his crazy antics on set. MTV : Zoey is a physical departure from your usual leading-lady roles in films like “The House Bunny” and “What’s Your Number?” What was it that led you to choose this script? Anna Faris : I’ve been such a big fan of Sacha’s for years and I just jumped at the opportunity to get to work with him. I was just thrilled. That was really exciting for me. I love, in general, just getting to transform myself for characters. That’s really an exciting process for me. When they presented me with a more androgynous look, I thought that was just perfect. You know, this is the kind of girl that the dictator has never met before. He’s used to sleeping with models and actresses, these really stunning women, so for a while he thinks that I’m a boy. MTV : Was there anything challenging for you about the role? Faris : Not so much the role, but the project was really challenging because Sacha and his whole crew, all the writers and our director, they’ve worked together for so long and they do so much improv. It’s like 90 percent improv, and so the challenge was just keeping up with that as an actor, just being on your toes. I found it really hard, but also really exciting. MTV : Of course, we have to ask: What was it like working with Baron Cohen? Faris : It was amazing. He’s just this sort of crazy genius. You just have to be prepared for anything. The scene [can go] in a gazillion different directions and you just have to sort of roll with the punches. But it was great, I loved it. I just adore him. He was in character a lot of the time, but when he wasn’t, he’s a really kind gentleman — really intellectual and very funny. I just adored him. MTV/b> : You said he was in character most of the time. Would you approach him in character as well? Faris : [ Laughs ] Yeah, I kind of would! Like, “OK, wait, is this the…? Oh, wait, he’s the supreme leader.” It was a little tricky for me because my character isn’t supposed to know that he’s a dictator. So I was like, “Well, do I then? Maybe? I don’t know? I’ll just go to craft services.” MTV : With all the improvisation, did you have a hard time keeping a straight face on set? Faris : Yeah, a lot of times! I mean, I feel really fortunate that I had the “Scary Movie” experience because I feel like that sort of prepared me for a lot of the general chaos of the set of “The Dictator,” so I just felt like you sort of go with it and wait until somebody calls cut. Until then, you just keep acting. MTV : He’s known to make people uncomfortable, like his stunt at the Oscars where he poured fake ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Did he ever do anything that made you think, “OK, where is the nearest exit? How can I escape this?” Faris : [ Laughs ] No! He was actually so sweet to me. I sort of escaped all that. But he was always, you know, such a gentleman. I didn’t know what it was going to be, but I did know that something was sort of afoot for the Oscars. And my husband [Chris Pratt] and I went and I saw Sacha, and I was like, “Honey, we just need to steer clear. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but let’s just sort of avoid Sacha.” MTV : Do you have a favorite memory from shooting? Faris : There’s a scene where Sacha and I are sort of forming our friendship in an intimate way, [ laughs ] and that’s really fun. I had to grow my armpit hair for the movie. MTV News : How was that? Faris : It was awful! I was so naive about it too. I was like, “Yeah, I’ll grow it out. No big deal.” MTV News : Did your husband say anything about it? Faris : He was such a good sport about it. He was like, “Yeah, honey! You do it. Just go.” But he also didn’t have to be around me too much that summer. I thought it would be, you know, fluffy and light, I guess. But it was so dark and thick and coarse. It was crazy. I felt very self-conscious about it. Maybe I was a little bit of a baby about it. MTV News : Before we sign off, can you tell us your favorite joke? Faris : Oh, my favorite joke! OK, let’s see. A little boy and his grampa … wait, oh no, I won’t tell you that one. It’s a little raunchy. But I will tell you this one: There’s two blondes and there’s a river in between them and one blonde says to the other blonde, “Hey, how do I get to the other side?” And the other blonde says, “You’re already there!” Yep. Pretty dumb. Are you excited to see “The Dictator”? Let us know in the comments! Hippie Romance + Terrorism Jokes = The New Trailer for The Dictator

The first trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen ‘s The Dictator had Megan Fox and Kardashian jokes, but those pop culture touchstones have been replaced by Anna Faris and terrorism gags in the new, longer trailer. An upgrade? Eh, sure. Maybe. Or not: Faris’s brunette pixie ‘do does make her look particularly adorable, but juxtaposed with her natural poise Cohen comes off as a poor man’s Adam Sandler . Like, hammy Zohan-lite Sandler. Here’s why Cohen’s Dictator schtick hasn’t really worked thus far, from the film footage that’s been released: When Cohen is 100 percent in character — clueless, masking any hint of self-awareness, as he was best in Borat or while Kim Jong-illing Ryan Seacrest recently at the Oscars — he absolutely slays. That unapologetic ignorance is key, and that’s how The Dictator seems to start out. But throw in those rom-com cliches and the lessons in humility and/or humanity that will surely come once Admiral General Aladeen falls for Faris’s hippie love interest, redeems himself, etc. (as the trailers suggest he will) and he’s instantly less interesting. Is it too late to cut together a version of The Dictator made entirely of Obama footage, Aladeen at the Wadiya Olympics, and scenes of Cohen frightening bigoted Americans with his terrifying “otherness?” Because that’s the movie I want after seeing all this learning lessons BS. Sacha Baron Cohen’s Dictator Spills Ashes On Ryan Seacrest At Oscars

Republic of Wadiya’s leader was armed with an urn purportedly containing ashes of Kim Jong Il on Sunday night. By Kevin P. Sullivan “The Dictator” arrives at the 2012 Oscars Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images True to his word and the threats he made on live television, Sacha Baron Cohen arrived on the red carpet for the 2012 Oscars in character as General Aladeen, the leader from his upcoming movie “The Dictator.” But appearing as the Dictator was just the beginning. Once he hit the carpet, Baron Cohen made as big a scene as many imagined he would as Ryan Seacrest became the unwitting victim of the actor’s publicity stunt. Armed with an urn supposedly containing the ashes of North Korea’s Kim Jong Il, Baron Cohen spilled the powdery contents of the container all over the E! host and his tuxedo. It was the final moment in a long battle of the wills with the Academy, which Baron Cohen ultimately won , resulting in his appearance in character as the ruler of the fictional nation, the Republic of Wadiya, flanked by his female security entourage. The appearance came after a long, public battle between the producers of the show and Baron Cohen, who was initially invited because of his involvement in Best Picture nominee “Hugo.” Word soon leaked out that Baron Cohen planned to walk the carpet in costume to promote his new film. It wasn’t long before the Academy pulled his tickets in an attempt to discourage his turning the red carpet into a self-promotional platform. Soon after the ban, Baron Cohen went on the offensive, releasing a statement in character and threatening the Academy if his tickets were not honored. “While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences.” Luckily for the Academy, they allowed Baron Cohen to walk the carpet in his large hair, beard and military garb. Not long after the reversal on the decision, Oscar 2012 producer Brian Grazer told “Extra” that he was excited for Baron Cohen’s appearance. “We’re thrilled to have him and he’ll be on the red carpet, I guess, dressed as the Dictator,” he said. Sacha Baron Cohen Will Attend Oscars As ‘The Dictator’

‘We’re thrilled to have him,’ Academy Awards producer Brian Grazer says. By Ryan J. Downey Sacha Baron Cohen as General Aladeen in “The Dictator” Photo: Paramount Action heroes like Rambo may not give in to threats, but Oscar producers caved to “The Dictator.” Of course, it’s all in good fun. In an interview with “Extra,” producer Brian Grazer confirmed Sacha Baron Cohen will arrive at the Academy Awards on Sunday as his character from his forthcoming political satire, contrary to earlier reports. “We’re thrilled to have him and he’ll be on the red carpet, I guess, dressed as the ‘dictator,’ ” he told “Extra.” Grazer, a producer on movies like “A Beautiful Mind” and “Apollo 13,” is also producing this year’s Oscars. In “The Dictator,” Baron Cohen adds the totalitarian leader of a fictitious country to his list of alter egos, which already included Ali G, Borat and Bruno, all of whom have headlined feature films since launching on “The Ali G Show.” He played a supporting role in Best Picture nominee “Hugo” but was insistent about attending the awards show in character as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen. Earlier on Friday (February 24), the English actor and comedian called in to the “Today” show (as Aladeen) to address his alleged ban from awards. The “Today” interview came on the heels of a video message on the website for “The Republic of Wadiya,” in which the dictator made a number of threats. “On behalf of the nation of Wadiya, I am outraged at being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Zionists,” General Aladeen said in the video. “While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences.” Back in 2007, Oscar producers wouldn’t allow the actor to appear in character as Borat. At press time, a spokesperson for the Academy told The Hollywood Reporter she had not heard about the plans for Cohen for Sunday. “The Dictator” arrives in theaters May 11.
