Piff Puffers out in Wisconsin just don’t give a fug cause they’re growing herb right in the middle of the state’s Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This isht is getting so out of control that the U.S. Forest Service has asked hunters and fishermen to look out for mary jane while they’re out in the area. That sounds like a good plan. Make hunters with guns feel like they’re in a real-life version of Call of Duty . According to CNN : Since 2008, nine marijuana growing operations have been discovered on public land within the state. Most recently, in late August, a fisherman visiting the forest happened upon a marijuana field that netted more than 8,000 plants worth $8 million. “The fisherman was walking along the banks of the Oconto River and noticed these patches that had been cleared and disturbed. Trees were down, things didn’t look right, and he reported that to authorities, and a surveillance operation was established,” said Jane Cliff, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service eastern region. Approximately 150 federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement agents were involved in the sting that followed, leading to the arrest of seven people. All of the suspects pleaded guilty and are in prison awaiting trial. The suspects each face anywhere from 10 years to life in prison, a maximum fine of $10 million and five years to life of supervised release. But this isn’t the first time this has happened, the Forest Service says. It’s actually the third big bust in three years at the forest, resulting in the eradication of more than 80,000 marijuana plants that were cultivated by large drug trafficking organizations. That’s why authorities say they are reaching out to hunters in their regulation books and offering them training programs, warning them to be careful and asking them to note the GPS location of any suspicious areas and call the authorities as soon as they can. “Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is large, secluded and heavily roaded, so our personnel cannot by themselves keep an eye on every acre,” Cliff said. “That’s why we are relying on forest users to share information with us.” “We conduct aerial surveillance, and we have seen a change in the growers’ tactics. A number of years ago, there would be large multithousand plant fields concentrated in one area, and now they have a couple of hundred plants in one location and then another couple hundred plants a couple hundred yards away which makes aerial detection more difficult,” said David Spakowicz, the director of field operations for the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s criminal investigation division. Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said he and special agents at the Wisconsin Department of Justice are “not only aggressively investigating and eradicating these grows, but also working with our local and federal partners to hold accountable the individuals responsible for operating such grow operations.” “That kind of aggressive eradication and enforcement ought to send a message to those who think they can profit from growing illegal drugs on Wisconsin’s public lands, threatening our natural resources and potentially the people who enjoy them,” he said in a statement to CNN. The concern is that a person walking through the forest will come across not only an illegal grow operation, but also heavily armed growers. “If they are protecting $10 million of marijuana plants, that’s a lot of money, and there have been gun battles with law enforcement in other states such as California,” Spakowicz said. “We worry that they will bring the same level of violence with them.” Because the concern for public safety is so great, the state attorney general’s office works in conjunction with the Department of Justice to strongly prosecute marijuana growers. “We believe we need to arrest people in order to send a message to these marijuana growers that they are not welcome in Wisconsin and that their activities will be not be accepted,” Spakowicz said. Wisconsin is targeting illegal marijuana growers because it has millions of acres of remote public land. According to the state Department of Justice, 32 people have been arrested for illegally growing marijuana since 2008, and most were non-U.S. citizens in the country illegally. All of the suspects are expected to serve their sentences before they are deported, the department says. Several suspects interviewed by law enforcement said they were recruited from California to come to Wisconsin. In some cases they were told openly that they are to work in a marijuana growing operation, while in other cases they came believing they were to work in a restaurant. Some suspects also said they didn’t even know what state they were in. “They are large, drug trafficking organizations; they are not mom and pop operations,” she said. “These are people doing this to make a lot of money.” That’s some pretty bold and stupid isht right there. Did you see this coming?? Folks are asking BET why the show airs so late in defense of poor viewer turnout and, according to The Grio , the network isn’t putting any of the blame on their shoulders: When T.J. Holmes left CNN to host his own show on BET, Don’t Sleep, some called it a risky move, while the network’s viewers seemed to be excited. Holmes saw it as an opportunity to “reach out and report on stories that directly affect the African-American community.” Unfortunately, the viewership has not lived up to hype. Holmes’ show combines comedy, news and commentary not unlike The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Don’t Sleep airs in the 11 pm time-slot and drew 400,000 viewers on to its October 1 premiere. The October 9th episode drew 1 million viewers, but since then, it has slipped to as low as 203,000. “To be honest, the ratings haven’t been great in the past two weeks. Our audience always says they want this kind of programming, but they don’t show up,” said Debra Lee, BET’s CEO. theGrio’s 100: T.J. Holmes, News anchor leaves CNN for BET As a result, Don’t Sleep will now be on for one hour once a week, instead of every night. BET released a statement saying, “The viewers have spoken and due to the overwhelming demand, Don’t Sleep will now be expanded to a one hour weekly format allowing for a more comprehensive discussion of the issues and events affecting the African-American community,” “We will now have an hour-long format to educate, empower, and engage. This will allow us more time to delve deeper into topics and determine how we can all, in our own way, be agents of change,” Holmes wrote on his website. “As part of being extended to an hour, the show will move to Wednesday nights at 11 p.m. This will allow us to do on-location reporting from cities and communities across the country.” Here’s a thought BET. The Side-Eye: ‘Don’t Sleep’ With TJ Holmes Gets Cut Back After Viewers Are A No Show!
What are they tryin’ to say?!?! We all know someone who likes to have a drank at the end of a long day but cotdayum…these statistics are pretty crazy. Americans get too many calories from soda. But what about alcohol? It turns out adults get almost as many empty calories from booze as from soft drinks, a government study found. Soda and other sweetened drinks — the focus of obesity-fighting public health campaigns — are the source of about 6 percent of the calories adults consume, on average. Alcoholic beverages account for about 5 percent, the new study found. “We’ve been focusing on sugar-sweetened beverages. This is something new,” said Cynthia Ogden, one of the study’s authors. She’s an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which released its findings Thursday. The government researchers say the findings deserve attention because, like soda, alcohol contains few nutrients but plenty of calories. But a liquor trade association said the findings indicate there’s no big problem. “This research shows that the overwhelming majority of adults drink moderately,” Lisa Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the Distilled Spirits Council, said in a statement. The CDC study is based on interviews with more than 11,000 U.S. adults from 2007 through 2010. Participants were asked extensive questions about what they ate and drank over the previous 24 hours. The study found: –On any given day, about one-third of men and one-fifth of women consumed calories from beer, wine or liquor. –Averaged out to all adults, the average guy drinks 150 calories from alcohol each day, or the equivalent of a can of Budweiser. –The average woman drinks about 50 calories, or roughly half a glass of wine. –Men drink mostly beer. For women, there was no clear favorite among alcoholic beverages. –There was no racial or ethnic difference in average calories consumed from alcoholic beverages. But there was an age difference, with younger adults putting more of it away. For reference, a 12-ounce can of regular Coca-Cola has 140 calories, slightly less than a same-sized can of regular Bud. A 5-ounce glass of wine is around 100 calories. Here’s a thought. Maybe they should throw up the same calorie count on drinks as they do on everything else? LLS…do you think it’d make a difference? In what may go down as one of Georgia’s dumbest laws, a new immigration check on medical licenses was meant to weed out ‘illegal’ health care workers in the industry. It’s backfired only a week after it was put in place. According to NPR : Hundreds of health care workers in Georgia are losing their licenses to practice because of a problem created by a new immigration law in the state. The law requires everyone — no matter where they were born — to prove their citizenship or legal residency to renew their professional licenses. With too few state workers to process the extra paperwork, licenses for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals are expiring. Lisa Durden with the secretary of state’s office says renewing a license used to be a straightforward process and most applications whizzed through. Now, they crawl. Enactment of the law coincided with budget cuts that reduced the office staff by 40 percent. Kelly Farr, Georgia’s deputy secretary of state, says 600 nurses alone have fallen through the cracks. “There’s nothing more frustrating than getting that call from the desperate nurse, knowing … she’s being slowed down because we literally don’t have enough people to click the approve button,” Farr said. While the secretary of state handles licensing of nurses, pharmacists, and veterinarians, Georgia’s medical board is in charge of doctors, physician assistants and even acupuncturists. It’s the same story there. Director LaSharn Hughes says she sent 41,000 letters of notification out on a recent Thursday. “And by Monday, we’d burned up a fax machine,” Hughes said. “We didn’t have the staff. We didn’t have the equipment.” Phones go unanswered. Paperwork piles up. And processing delays, coupled with confusion over the new rules, mean lots of expired licenses. Hughes estimates about 1,300 doctors and other medical practitioners have lost their legal ability to work. Some didn’t submit the required paperwork. Others are stuck in the backlog of applications that haven’t been processed yet. Donald Palmisano Jr. executive director of the Medical Association of Georgia, says the law fixes a problem that never existed — at least not among doctors. “We’re not aware of any undocumented immigrants that are physicians,” Palmisano said. Even D.A. King, an outspoken activist and critic of illegal immigration who helped write the law, agrees. King says the law protects Georgia jobs, but even he believes some parts of the legislation need fixing. A bill that addressed some of the law’s shortcomings died in the last legislative session. “I am not only outraged, but sincerely disappointed and puzzled that our repair legislation was not allowed a vote,” King says. Legislative sponsors of the law didn’t respond to interview requests. Neither did Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. For now, state licensing offices will keep plowing through the mail containing copies of passports and birth certificates, then checking them against a list of acceptable documents. But that’s where the vetting ends, confirms Kelly Farr and Lisa Durden of the secretary of state’s office. The law says nothing about making sure the documents are genuine. “We really don’t have a way to do that,” says Durden. State officials say the new document requirements haven’t uncovered any undocumented immigrants. Instead, officials say they hope the process itself may discourage people in the country illegally from trying to get licenses in the first place. Cornel West Calls Obama “Republican In Blackface” Cornel West has made it clear that he feels that President Obama should be more proactive in tackling issues like poverty and the prison-industrial complex. Some African Americans see the professor’s views as divisive, while others say he’s speaking truth to power. Recently in an interview with Democracy Now, West and Tavis Smiley were asked about the president’s priorities, and while Smiley said Americans must encourage the POTUS to be the best he can be, West was much more critical… Via The Root : “I think that it’s morally obscene and spiritually profane to spend $6 billion on an election, $2 billion on a presidential election, and not have any serious discussion—poverty, trade unions being pushed against the wall dealing with stagnating and declining wages when profits are still up and the 1 percent are doing very well, no talk about drones dropping bombs on innocent people. So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming. So it’s very sad. I mean, I’m glad there was not a right-wing takeover, but we end up with a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface, with Barack Obama , so that our struggle with regard to poverty intensifies” … The language that Cornel uses about the President of the United States is inappropriate, disrespectful and not specific with words that will give volunteerism to the needs of the people in this country, and just completely outrageous with poor communication through name-calling. Barack won before Ohio, Virgina, and Florida’s votes even came in tonight! With his voice strong but quivering with passion, Barack gave a heartfelt speech after a long night of waiting for the electoral votes to come in. POTUS let us know that “The role of citizens of our democracy does not end with your vote” after he thanked US ALL for campaigning and voting during the last few months. According to The Huffington Post : President Barack Obama did not just win reelection tonight. His victory signaled the irreversible triumph of a new, 21st-century America: multiracial, multi-ethnic, global in outlook and moving beyond centuries of racial, sexual, marital and religious tradition. Obama, the mixed-race son of Hawaii by way of Kansas, Indonesia, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, won reelection in good part because he not only embodied but spoke to that New America, as did the Democratic Party he leads. His victorious coalition spoke for and about him: a good share of the white vote (about 45 percent in Ohio, for example); 70 percent or so of the Latino vote across the country, according to experts; 96 percent of the African-American vote; and large proportions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The Republican Party, by contrast, has been reduced to a rump parliament of Caucasian traditionalism: white, married, church-going — to oversimplify only slightly. “It’s a catastrophe,” said GOP strategist Steve Schmidt. “This is, this will have to be, the last time that the Republican Party tries to win this way.” The GOP chose as its standard-bearer Mitt Romney, whose own Mormon Church until recent decades discriminated officially against blacks. His campaign made little serious effort to reach out to Hispanics voters, and Romney hurt himself by taking far-right positions on immigration during the GOP primaries. He made no effort whatsoever in the black community. Obama reached out not only racially and ethnically, but in terms of lifestyle. Analysts made fun of, and Republicans derided, his campaign’s focus on discrete demographic and social slices of the electorate, including gays and lesbians. But the message was one about the future, not the American past. U.S. Census numbers tell the story. In the first decade of the new millennium, the Asian-American population rose 43.3 percent, the African-American population 12.3 percent, the Latino community 43 percent — and the white population just 5.7 percent. To be sure, the president won because of his stand on the issues — health care reform, Wall Street regulation, the auto industry bailout, among others. But his victory is something more: a sense that we are all in this together as a society, no matter who we are or how we live our lives. I saw this new America at the heart of the Obama reelection effort, in their campaign offices. In one office in Virgina, for example, the local campaign manager was Pakistani-American, the volunteers were of every race and background, the people heading out to handle the signup drive were Hispanic, and the event they were working on was a concert by Bruce Springsteen. Not only did Barack and his mayne man Joe win the electoral vote, they also won the popular vote too. While Mitt won the white vote (SMH), he failed to bring in votes with minorities. Barack also brought in votes from more than 60% of young voters (those ages 18-29) and, even though he fell from 44% to 39% of the overall white vote this election year, he still stomped Robney with a huge lead. To quote CNN “This is a crisis amongst the Republican Party”. God only knows how long the clean-up from Sandy is going to take but the MTA is already putting the Unwatering Crew to work in the city’s flooded subway tunnels. According to their Flickr site, the team is making progress: New York City Transit employees are pumping water out of two tunnels that carry the subway beneath the East River. The Cranberry Street Tunnel, carries the A and C trains between Brooklyn and Manhattan, and the 53rd Street Tunnel carries the E and M trains between Queens and Manhattan.
