Via The Grio reports: Meneko Spigner McBeth’s bank account is about to have quite a few additional zeros. On Monday night, Frito-Lay announced that McBeth, a registered nurse, was the winner of its “Do Us a Flavor” contest to create a new potato chip flavor, reports NBC4 New York. McBeth’s winning idea for wasabi-ginger chips beat out entries for cappuccino, mango salsa, and cheddar-bacon mac and cheese flavors. Her wasabi-ginger fascination grew the first time she tasted the combination while eating sushi. “That was the way I had to have my sushi from now on,” she told the news station. For her idea McBeth, from Deptford, N.J., will receive $1 million or a portion of the year in sales—whichever figure is larger. What was your favorite chip flavor??

BBC News reports: South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been given five years in jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. In court in Pretoria, Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge. Pistorius has now been taken to the cells. Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term, and the defence argued for community service and house arrest. Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder. Defence lawyer Barry Roux said his client was expected to serve 10 months in prison, with the rest under house arrest. The BBC’s Andrew Harding, in court, says the parents of Reeva Steenkamp, Barry and June, tell him they are happy with the sentence and relieved the case is over.
