Carrie Underwood Opens Up About ‘Soul Surfer’ Acting Debut

‘It’s important to get Bethany’s story out,’ singer/actress tells MTV News about real-life story of surfer who lost her arm in shark attack. By Kara Warner Carrie Underwood Photo: MTV News Because the movie “Soul Surfer” is based on the true and inspiring story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack but overcame all odds to become a pro, the film was a real labor of love for everyone involved. Particularly so first-time actress Carrie Underwood. When MTV News caught up with the country music superstar, she explained why she decided to make her acting debut in “Surfer,” which opens on Friday. She also opened up about discovering how different the worlds of music and film really are. “This whole movie, this whole project is important,” Underwood said about signing on. “It’s important to get Bethany’s story out, and people being entertained but also, hopefully, people leave the movie theater feeling different about themselves in their lives and inspired,” she said. Underwood added that this was a project she really believed in and of which she wanted to be a part. “It wasn’t some silly nothing movie that in 10 years nobody is going to care [about]. Hopefully, people watch this and really take something away from it.” Regarding the differences between performing onstage and performing on a film set, Underwood said she felt a little bit like a fish out of water at first, but thanks to support from the cast and crew, she got through it. “Oh gosh, I think my singing world and the movie world are way, way, way different,” she said. “I know what I’m doing when I’m singing, I feel like on the set, everyone was so nice and they helped me out so much. They were very patient with me and very understanding that this was my first movie. … Onstage I know what to do, but in front of the lights and being on the movie set, I was pretty lost most of the time,” she admitted. “But they were great.” Are you excited to see Carrie make her acting debut in “Soul Surfer”? The Language of Love: How Miscommunication Leads to Complication

You may have heard of a little book called Men are From Mars, Women are from Venus . In the popular self-help book, relationship counselor John Gray focuses on the differences between men and women and provides some insight on the fact that women and men communicate and function differently in relationships. He proposes instead of constantly battling the urge to change one another we should accept our differences in order to develop healthy relationships. Whether you loved, hated or even read the book, John Gray does a decent job of pointing out that miscommunication usually occurs when partners in a relationship say one thing, but it is interpreted incorrectly. “We mistakenly assume that if our partners love us they will react and behave in certain ways…the ways we react and behave when we love someone,” he writes. It actually boils down to biology at its basic level. Genders think and express themselves differently, partially because our brains are built differently. Women say about 25,000 words a day; men only say about half that amount. Women are naturally better communicators. We can articulate exactly what we’re feeling in order to convey a clear message. For example, if a woman is upset about the fact that her man was late, there is no hesitation in saying, “When you’re late it makes me feel like you have no respect for my feelings or priorities.” If a guy is upset because you were late, it may come out like, “It took you that long to do THAT to your hair?” We all know the inferno that follows that comment. Men better express themselves through action, they are natural showmen. Instead of apologizing for disrespecting the effort it actually took to make your chignon look effortless, he’ll send flowers or let you have the last Oreo that he’s craving. Take a look at some quick tips that follow in the style of John Gray’s approach to understanding all of the simple misinterpretations that make our relationships unnecessarily complicated… ( Continue reading )

‘Hard Times Of RJ Berger’ Stars Tease Season-Two Premiere

‘Max is going after Miles in a big way,’ Jayson Blair tells MTV News of tonight’s sumo-suit throwdown. By Vanessa WhiteWolf Jayson Blair Photo: MTV News Season one of MTV’s “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” ended with a dramatic cliffhanger that saw RJ leaving his lifelong crush, Jenny, to lose his virginity to friend Lily … in a hospital bed before she flat-lined. But when MTV News spoke with the “Hard Times” stars , they told us what they really can’t wait to see on Thursday’s season-two premiere is what happened after a more violent altercation. “At the very end of season one, Miles beats up Max at the prom,” Jareb Dauplaise, who plays Miles, reminded us. “That’s the last time you see Miles, [he’s] straddling Max Owens and just punching him where you shouldn’t hit a man. So in the opening, you have Miles facing the music with the Max Owens beatdown.” Jayson Blair, who plays the unlucky Max, said, “In the season premiere you find Max very upset with having his balls punched in, and there will be hell to pay for that. And he’s going after Miles in a big way — in a sumo suit.” Dauplaise clarified, “Yes, we end up throwing on the sumo suits and doing a professional wrestling event for charity.” “I’m going to kill him for a good cause, it’s for charity. So whenever charity’s involved, it makes it all right,” Blair laughed. Whether or not Max and Miles can resolve their differences in the ring, Blair told us he’s really focused on what the show can accomplish in its second season. “I honestly had fears about where we were going to go in the second season. I was like, ‘We’ve already pissed off all the parents.’ The comedy is so big and in-your-face, and for this show to be successful, it has to go in that direction and break boundaries, pushing those extremes,” Blair explained. “When I saw those scripts for season two, I said, ‘Yeah!’ We went there in a big way and I’m so excited about it.” Dauplaise, meanwhile, is hoping his character gets some shine of his own in the near future. “Miles is the sidekick, watching RJ get the girl of his dreams in season one, he gets to lose his virginity in season one — Miles is sitting on the side, he wants the same things. Hopefully, we turn it around. I’m excited to see where Miles goes. I want Miles to get laid,” he laughed. Don’t miss “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” season premiere Thursday at 11 p.m. following the “Jersey Shore” season finale on MTV.

Robert Pattinson Says He And Kristen Stewart ‘Have Different Ways Of Thinking’

On ‘MTV First: Robert Pattinson,’ he opens up about ‘Twilight’ co-star. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart clearly have a connection: From their onscreen chemistry in the “Twilight” saga to their real-life romance, the two stars undoubtedly see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. That is, however, except for how they approach their careers as performers. During his live 30-minute chat with us for “MTV First: Robert Pattinson,” the actor discussed the differences between his outlook on the acting process compared to KStew’s. “We just have different ways of thinking,” Pattinson explained. “I like the kind of cerebral aspect of things, and she has kind of an immediate emotional response to stuff every single time.” In fact, their approach to things in real life often reflects their decision-making as actors. “She can be thrown by something someone says and notices much more about people, whereas I just want to see the meaning of something,” the 24-year-old star of “Water for Elephants” explained. So, how does RPattz’s more-mental approach to acting bode with KStew’s responsiveness? Not too well, actually. While Pattinson admitted he’s someone who can’t take on a project until he entirely gets it , Stewart will be the first to point out what there is to “get” is actually right there in front of him. “She’s like, ‘Why can’t you understand? It’s obvious . You don’t know, you shouldn’t be an actor!’ ” RPattz described with a laugh. But, then again, his approach to his acting career is very much rooted in instinct. “I don’t want to just act for the sake of acting,” he told us. “If I’m not doing kind-of cool stuff, then I don’t want to be in front of people.” The star, who confessed he doesn’t even like having his picture taken, added, “All I want to do is make movies that I want to see. I’ve always tried to go for that and … you’ve got to go through lots of different hurdles to go to that level.” While he will continue to look for projects that challenge and interest him, he fully admitted he’s not the type of actor who has a deep-rooted passion for the craft. “I don’t know what that feeling is,” he said of the desire to act. “It’s like, ‘What do you want to do?’ ‘I want to read someone else’s lines right now! I want someone to film me saying something!’ It’s, like, really weird.” Are you surprised to hear Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart differ so much in their approach to acting? NeNe Leakes, Star Jones Call Truce

Headstrong Celebrity Apprentice stars NeNe Leakes and Star Jones are trying to mend fences after a feud between them erupted earlier this week. Star went off on Nene and Lisa Rinna earlier this week amid reports that the divas actually came to physical blows on Donald Trump’s show. But even they realize the danger of this getting out of hand. “Both NeNe and Star are trying to get along better off set,” a source said. “It was really only when taping started that their competitiveness kicked in.” “NeNe felt slighted by Star, calling her a back stabber and thought was not showing her enough respect – while Star believed NeNe was a phony.” “NeNe believed Star was trying to boss the other contestants around and on top of that they were feuding over hair, wardrobe and make-up too.” “But they’re trying to be more accepting of their differences now, although producers want to ramp-up their rivalry when the cameras are rolling.” Sounds like they’re both taking the high road … but ratings losing out to respect, manners and sound judgment? We’ll believe it when we see it. [Photos: Fame Pictures]

Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness Turns Breakup Into ‘Sun & Moon’

Trance group gears up for Miami music week with their newest single. By Adam Stewart Tony McGuinness Photo: MTV News For Above & Beyond , and their loyal following, these are exciting times. With Miami’s annual Anjunabeats party on the horizon (at the Ice Palace on March 24), and their highly anticipated second studio album, Group Therapy, out in June, 2011 is shaping up to be a massive year for the U.K. trance trio. The album’s first single and video , “Sun & Moon,” recently hit the Web, and MTV News had the chance to catch up with one third of the collaborative, Tony McGuinness who gave us a little insight into the story behind song. “It was written about the same girl [Katy] that a lot of our early songs were written about,” McGuinness told MTV News. “It was a contender for the OceanLab album [ Sirens of the Sea ], but for many reasons, it didn’t make it on. It’s gone through a number of incarnations, and I think the reason why we were really happy for it to be the first single is that the sound of it is very now. … It is kind of classic Above & Beyond, a sad song — and that’s sort of what we do. I think when we do it well, we do it as well as anybody. That’s kind of our trademark, really.” The video, directed by Ferry Gouw, stars Alex Childs and Steve Cato as a feuding couple who have entered that “one last try” phase of a failing relationship that ends in a breakup. Eventually, she leaves him, and he turns to music and dancing for comfort. “I think everybody that you spend time with in your life, you learn from and grow through that period, and certainly that was true with Katy,” he explained. “So, she’s in my past, she’s a ‘failed relationship,’ but to me it was anything but a failure. And that’s what this song’s really trying to say, you know, whatever experiences you have, romantic or otherwise with people, there’s always a part of that relationship that lives on in your memory, hence the line, ‘You’ll never get over me, I’ll never get over you.’ I think those things are important. We’re still friends. I’m not sure how she feels about me writing about the darker parts of our relationship all the time, but, you know, I think that’s part of the inspiration that you get from other people.” McGuinness defines “Sun & Moon” as a sequel to the smash single “Alone Tonight”, from 2006’s Tri-State. “I really wanted to make sure that we represented the album, which I think ‘Sun and Moon’ does,” McGuinness said. “[It’s] smack back in the middle of what the album’s about. So I think sonically and musically and lyrically, it’s a very good advert for the album.” Will you be checking out Above & Beyond at their annual Anjunabeats party at the Ice Palace in Miami on March 24? Nate Dogg Calls His Music ‘The Truth’ On ‘Yo! MTV Raps’

‘If it got that Dogg Pound flavor, it’s always going to be a tad more,’ he tells Fab Five Freddy in 1995. By Steven Roberts Fab 5 Freddy and Nate Dogg in 1995 Photo: MTV News Nate Dogg’s death Tuesday is still sending ripples through the hip-hop community, especially for his former Dogg Pound peers . Nate, whose real name is Nathaniel Hale, is believed to have died from complications due to his two strokes — one suffered in 2007 and another the following year . His impact on West Coast hip-hop could not be overstated, as Nate helped pioneer the G-Funk sound with his deep, soulful voice on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle and his breakthrough collaboration with Warren G, “Regulate.” Nate was feature on a 1995 episode of “Yo! MTV Raps,” when Fab Five Freddy paid a visit to Cali to speak with Tha Dogg Pound and their affiliates, also including Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, Sam Sneed and Lady of Rage. “You know Tha Dogg Pound got mad flavor, multiple flavors like Baskin-Robbins,” Fab Five said. “And one of the interesting flavors in the Dogg is my man, Nate Dogg.” A reserved Nate stepped up to the microphone, detailing to Fab Five how he made a name for himself on Dre’s and Snoop’s projects. Nate cited Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson as his idols. When Fab Five asked how he makes his smooth, soulful sound work so well with the rest of Tha Dogg Pound’s rough and raw delivery, he acknowledged the differences, but said they shared the same message. “It’s something different, what we doing, but it’s the truth [that] we are saying,” Nate said. “If you can relate to it, it’s always going to be the truth, and if it got that Dogg Pound flavor, it’s always going to be a tad more.” Send your well-wishes and condolences by leaving your comments below. Eddie Cibrian-LeAnn Rimes Reality Show in the Works?

Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes are engaged and in love . But will CibriAnn soon open their world to reality TV cameras for all to see? That’s the rumor floating around … and his ex-wife would be on the warpath. Brandi Glanville says she “knows nothing” about the reported new reality show , which would also feature Brandi and Eddie’s sons Mason and Jake. Are Eddie and LeAnn coming to reality TV? [Photo: Pacific Coast News] “LeAnn tweeted that anyone who does a reality show is a fame whore so I somehow doubt it,” Glanville said, and she knows about Rimes’ Tweets. Glanville and Rimes recently got into a Twitter fight after the former blasted the famous singer for acting inappropriately at her son’s school. “I told Eddie to please tell you that I think it is highly inappropriate for you to sing in my son’s class on Friday,” Glanville wrote. “Boundries!” “It’s Mason’s week to share his family with the class. it isn’t ur place,” she added. “Let Eddie read a script. You are not his parent. RESPECT!” Although no direct response was given from Rimes, she did post a somewhat cryptic message possibly addressing the messages from Glanville. “I have asked once and would hope my fans would please respect my wishes… please do not retweet me anyone else’s drama,” Rimes wrote. Rimes made headlines when she had an affair with Cibrian, who then ended his eight year marriage with Brandi Glanville to be with LeAnn. The two women tried counseling together to attempt to resolve their differences, but they don’t appear to have reached a successful outcome. Rimes and Cibrian announced their engagement in December. A reality show would certainly not help smooth things over, but it would certainly be entertaining if they brought Brandi’s crazy into the fold.
