Simon Cowell: ‘X Factor’ Boot Camp Is ‘Uncomfortable’

‘You really do feel what it’s like to be a contestant on one of these shows,’ he tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Simon Cowell Photo: MTV News As if early episodes — and folks like Brian Bradley , 2Squar’d and that dude who ripped off Prince &#8212l; haven’t already proven the point, “X Factor” has been working overtime to prove that it’s nothing like “American Idol.” And if for some reason you’re still not seeing the differences, well, just wait until the “Factor” kicks off its Boot Camp on Wednesday night’s show. Because, as judge Simon Cowell told MTV News, unlike the high-gloss “Idol” Hollywood Week, Boot Camp will be, well, real. “I’ve seen them all and I’ve made a ton of them, [and] what I do know, because obviously I was there, [was] that I wanted to show the viewers what actually happened,” he said. “So the first cut you get is the producer’s cut, where everything’s fantastic and I’m hilarious, whatever, whatever. But that was not the week I saw. Just show the process — the good, the bad, the terrible. Let the audience make their own mind up. “I mean, it’s quite uncomfortable,” Cowell continued. “[And] I haven’t seen the finished cut yet, but it’s a lot, lot better, and you really do feel you know what it’s like now to be a contestant on one of these shows and what we felt; we were under pressure as well.” Highlighting that pressure is the added emphasis on choreography, which really comes to the forefront during Boot Camp — for better or worse. But, as Cowell said, viewers will get to see it all, because that’s what auditioning for a singing competition is really like. “It wasn’t a test. We didn’t judge them on it. We just said that if you wanted to be a star today, you’re going to have to be on a stage in front of lots of people, and sometimes you’re going to have to learn how to dance,” he said. “Certain people just flatly refused to do it, other people tried and failed miserably, and then other people we were kind of drawn to because we thought, ‘You should try it … we’re looking at you.’ ” Are you looking forward to Boot Camp on “X Factor”? Whether you’re talking about George Romero, Danny Boyle, Edgar Wright or any one else who has made a famous contribution to the zombie genre, some of the most important things to note are the differences in the undead. Do they run? What do they eat? How do they eat? Is the transformation fast? These are all questions any zombie filmmaker worth his weight in brains has to ask. ‘Harry Potter’ Director, Writer To Adapt ‘The Stand’

Director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves are ‘the right team’ to bring Stephen King’s novel to the screen, expert tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Wigler “Harry Potter” Director David Yates Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Hot off the success of the “Harry Potter” franchise, director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves are teaming up again to adapt another major literary property: Stephen King’s “The Stand,” for Warner Bros. For the uninitiated, “The Stand” is a post-apocalyptic novel that follows a group of survivors after 99.4 percent of the human race is wiped out by the effects of a biological weapon. The remaining survivors break off into two camps, one based in Boulder, Colorado, which represents good, and the other in Las Vegas, which represents evil. The two camps eventually face off in a stand that determines the future of mankind. When it comes to bringing a beloved novel to the big screen, Yates and Kloves certainly seem like the go-to pair, but “The Stand” is a different beast than “Harry Potter” in many ways. For one, the adult-oriented material is much darker than “Potter.” Drew McWeeny of HitFix , who broke the news, told MTV News he thinks the way Yates and Kloves treated the darker aspects of the “Potter” movies is a mark in their favor as they gear up for the “Stand” collaboration. “I think they’ve demonstrated as a team that they are capable of making extreme darkness palatable and ably depicting the struggle between good and evil,” McWeeny said. “It might not have been the first team I thought of to adapt that book, but it’s a damn good team.” MTV Movies Blog editor and “The Stand” fan Josh Wigler doesn’t think the movie can be made with anything less than an R rating. Similarly, McWeeny said the film won’t be an easy project for Warner Bros. to move through the studio. When McWeeny first broke the story , he said it didn’t make sense to bring “The Stand” to the screen again if it didn’t expand upon the 1994 TV miniseries — and he offered that the new element should be the very disturbing material that made the novel a hit. The novel, which features a massive cast of characters, is divided into three “books,” and the assumption is that Yates and Kloves wouldn’t attempt to adapt the story into just one movie. The larger question is whether Warner Bros. would make two movies or a trilogy out of “The Stand.” McWeeny thinks it could go either way. “I’ve been hearing that three is the magic number, creatively, and they want a trilogy,” he said. “[But] two films may just make better economic sense for them. I do think there’s a way to pull it off in two films, but that’s when you really start cutting this to the bone and that may not be best for the story itself.” With Universal having passed on Ron Howard’s ambitious attempt to adapt another King classic, “The Dark Tower,” it seems fair to presume that Yates and Kloves may worry about making “The Stand” too big. But there are many elements of “The Stand” that make it more adaptable than “Dark Tower” ever was, McWeeny said. “Even though [‘The Stand’ is] very big and has a ton of characters, there is a much more linear storytelling shape, and a simple film trilogy is something that Hollywood understands,” he explained. “Coming off the final ‘Potter’ film, I think Yates and Kloves are the right team to get almost anything made.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Gucci Mane ‘Can’t See’ Recording With Young Jeezy Again

During ‘RapFix Live,’ Royce Da 5’9″ also shares his thoughts on hip-hop beefs. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway Calloway, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy have squashed their beef again, but don’t expect any new music from the Atlanta rappers. MTV News’ “RapFix Live” caught up with Gucci Mane for his first on-camera interview since his release from prison, and the “Lemonade” rapper confirmed to Sway Calloway that he and his longtime rival decided to squelch any further altercations between their respective teams. “On the strength of [the fact that] anything could have happened between not just me and him [but] between our camps, we just came to a sit-down of just respecting the fact that somebody can get hurt, and it ain’t going to be us,” Gucci said. “That’s what made us do that.” Although the two trap stars came to rap prominence almost simultaneously — Jeezy was featured on Gucci’s early hit “So Icey” — they began feuding soon after. Things quickly went from words on wax to real violence. In 2005, five men who were allegedly party of Jeezy’s camp, stormed into a home where Gucci was visiting a woman. One of those men, who was thought to be affiliated with Jeezy (which he has vehemently denied), was later found dead . Barbs were traded in song thereafter, with occasional confrontations between the two factions. However, during a 2009 radio interview with DJ Drama , Gucci — calling in from jail — and Jeezy said they were squashing their differences and mentioned the possibility of collaborating. But Mr. La Flare, who just dropped his Ferrari Boyz collaboration with Waka Flocka Flame , offered an “I don’t think so” when asked about the possibility of him and Jeezy creating music together again, adding, “We started the conversation, but I can’t see it happening.” Royce Da 5’9″, also a guest on Wednesday’s edition of “RapFix Live,” who famously feuded with D12 years ago, is no stranger to rap beefs and offered his own insight on the matter. “People need to realize that a lot of these beefs that stem from rap or stem from other things, it doesn’t mean you have to make a song just because you squashed the beef,” Nickel Nine said. “People should just appreciate that they’re not beefing anymore; that’s great in itself. They can stop there, and it’s OK.” Fortunately for rap fans, the Detroit lyricist has recorded with a number of individuals he, at one point, wasn’t on good terms with. Notable among them is Eminem, with the pair releasing Hell: The Sequel as Bad Meets Evil last June. Before Royce finally met up with Slim Shady again — the two had stopped speaking in 2003 — he first ended his beef with the late Proof and then the rest of D12. Sometime after, word got back to Eminem that there were no longer any issues between the MCs, and he called Royce. The phone call put in perspective how inconsequential all the previous back-and-forth was. “I answered the phone. He said, ‘Royce, it’s Marshall,’ ” Royce recalled. “I said, ‘What’s up, Marshall?’ And then we just started laughing. It’s like embarrassing. It’s so childish. That’s what happens when you in your 20s: You grow out of that.” Do you think we’ll ever hear music from Gucci and Jeezy again? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. 50 Cent Explains What Separates Him From Lady Gaga, Eminem

Fif tells MTV News his labelmates’ singles ‘go to top 40 and crossover radio immediately.’ By Rob Markman 50 Cent Photo: Christopher Polk/ WireImage 50 Cent knows what it takes to make a hit record. The first step for him is the groundwork, usually in the form of a street single. Before “In Da Club,” the G-Unit General set the streets on fire with “Wanksta,” and before he took fans to the candy shop in 2005, Fif started off with “Disco Inferno.” For his fifth, yet-untitled LP — which he tweeted will now come out in November — things are no different. After blasting his label on Twitter last week, 50 decided to heat up the streets by dropping “Outlaw,” his new Cardiak-produced street single. When asked how his tried-and-true formula differs from that of Interscope labelmate Lady Gaga, Fif said their respective circumstances are incomparable. “When you say Lady Gaga, a pop artist, they want them to just deliver a song,” 50 said. “They don’t have the mixshow radio platform to go through before they would actually go for adds on an actual record.” As opposed to mainstream pop artists, rappers who are viewed as more niche, for the most part, usually have to service a record that caters to late-night urban-radio formats where DJs blend records together in a continuous stream. The mixshows serve as a proving ground of sorts for edgier hip-hop music. “Her records go to top 40 and crossover radio immediately. You can’t really compare it to any artist that would be considered a pop artist or a white artist,” 50 said of his circumstance in relation to Gaga’s. “And I say that openly, because what we consider urban radio or rhythmic radio was referred to as black radio at one point. That right there is something that I am conscious of.” Still, 50 said he doesn’t place any blame; instead, he simply points out the differences. He even talked about his method of landing records on the charts in relation to Eminem. Like Gaga, 50 points out that Slim Shady bypasses urban radio as well. “You can’t compare Eminem and 50 Cent’s career on any level,” he said. “Eminem doesn’t know what the inside of Hot 97 looks like. He’s never even had to go there. So the top 40 and crossover-radio platforms are detrimental to the success of an Eminem project, and for me to get to the top 40 or crossover space, I have to have music that performs so well on your Hot 97s and Power 106s of the world until it actually goes up to that point.” Last Thursday, before leaking “Outlaw,” 50 tweeted that he wouldn’t drop his new album in 2011 unless Interscope got “on the same page.” 50 clarified to MTV News what many perceived as a serious rift between him and his label. “They’re behind it, but to get everybody moving at the same beat and moving at the same pace is the object. That was what the goal was even writing that statement and releasing the song,” he said. What do you think of 50 Cent’s radio theories? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists 50 Cent

Exclusive: Mannie Fresh Explains Lil Wayne Reunion At Bonnaroo

Wayne embraced his former Cash Money mate onstage during his Friday night set. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Ade Mangum Mannie Fresh at Bonnaroo 2011 Photo: MTV News MANCHESTER, Tennessee – One of the highlights of Lil Wayne’s headlining set at Bonnaroo on Friday – at least to the folks in attendance who’ve followed Weezy’s career since his Hot Boys days – was the moment when he brought Cash Money founding father Mannie Fresh onstage, ending a longtime separation that had existed since 2005, when Fresh parted ways with Birdman and the label under decidedly acrimonious conditions. When the two embraced onstage, it was symbolic in more ways than one: Not only did it show that Mannie and Wayne had never really been at odds, but it was a rather important passing of the torch too. And Fresh told MTV News as much, earlier in the day on Friday, when he said that the two really never been rivals … and hinted at bigger things to come later in the evening. “It’s a possibility. Like I said, there’s no beef. No animosity,” Fresh said. “I got a great deal of respect for Wayne. You know, from where he started to where he at right now. He’s on top of his game. So it’s a possibility [we could reunite]. You never know.” And as anyone who was in attendance for Wayne’s set could attest, that possibility definitely became a reality. For his part, Fresh wouldn’t speak about just how the pair settled their differences, but now that they’ve gone public with their reunion, could the duo could get back to their collaborative ways? It’s something Fresh isn’t about to write off. “That would be hot,” he said. “But, you know, my half, I’m there. We’re going to leave the rest of it on him, you know what I’m saying?” Would you like to see Wayne reconnect with Mannie Fresh in the studio? Tell us in the comments! Woman Who Blamed Acid Attack On A Black Woman Apologizes

Back in September, Bethany Storro- a woman from Washington was “attacked” with acid by an African American woman, or so she claims. It turns out that the story was a hoax, and that Bethany actually splashed acid on her own face, causing severe burns and hospitalization. The truth came out when Bethany was under serious questioning by detectives and police noticed the differences in her story each time she told it. She finally broke down and confessed that she splashed herself with acid and blamed it on an African American woman. Now, Bethany has taken a plea deal for making false statements to the police. She now must log 240 hours of community service and pay $4,000 worth of overtime to the detectives. During sentencing, Bethany apologized to the people of her community, and especially the African American community, for blaming the incident on a black woman without reason. SMH.
