‘Eclipse’ Gets Widest Domestic Release In Hollywood History

Opening in 4,416 theaters, the latest ‘Twilight’ film breaks record held by ‘Iron Man 2.’ By Josh Wigler Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment Fans of “The Twilight Saga” are used to watching dreamy vampire Edward Cullen face down routinely shirtless werewolf Jacob Black over the heart of the beautiful Bella Swan — but it seems that Edward and Jacob have put aside their differences to team up against a new, unexpected opponent: Tony Stark. Deadline Hollywood reports that “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” has already earned its first record without even officially landing in theaters. According to the report, “Eclipse” is currently slated to open in 4,416 theaters across North America, making it the single widest domestic release in Hollywood history. That same record was most recently held by Marvel Studios and Paramount’s “Iron Man 2,” which initially unspooled in 4,380 locations. Before that, “The Dark Knight” held the record in 2008 with 4,366 theaters. There is currently no official count of how many locations plan to launch “Eclipse” with midnight showings on Wednesday (June 30). Having already sunk its fangs into one record, the David Slade-directed “Eclipse” is well poised to cement its status in Hollywood history as it launches into theaters this week. In November, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” enjoyed a massive $140 million opening weekend, more than doubling the initial numbers for the first “Twilight” film. With the summer season in full session, there’s no telling how much damage “Eclipse” could do at the box office. Are you going to a midnight screening of “Eclipse”? Share your plans in the comments. All McNuggets not created equal…

U.S. McNuggets not only contain more calories and fat than their British counterparts, but also chemicals not found across the Atlantic. CNN investigated the differences after receiving a blog comment asking about them. American McNuggets (190 calories, 12 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat for 4 pieces) contain the chemical preservative tBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleum-based product. They also contain dimethylpolysiloxane, “an anti-foaming agent” also used in Silly Putty. By contrast, British McNuggets (170 calories, 9 grams of fat, 1 gram of saturated fat for 4 pieces) lists neither chemical among its ingredients. “I would certainly choose the British nuggets over the American” says Ruth Winter, author of “A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives.” McDonald’s says the differences are based on the local tastes: In the United States, McNuggets are coated and then cooked, in the United Kingdom, they are cooked and then coated. As a result, the British McNuggets absorb less oil and have less fat. “You would find that if you looked at any of our core food items. You'd see little, regional differences,” says Lisa McComb, who handles global media relations for McDonald's, which has more than 32,000 restaurants in 117 countries. “We do taste testing of all our food items on an ongoing basis.” One apparent difference is only a matter of labeling, according to McComb. U.K. McNuggets list ground celery and pepper, which are labeled simply as “spices” in the United States, she says. Marion Nestle, a New York University professor and author of “What to Eat,” says the tertiary butylhydroquinone and dimethylpolysiloxane in the McNuggets probably pose no health risks. As a general rule, though, she advocates not eating any food with an ingredient you can’t pronounce. Dimethylpolysiloxane is used as a matter of safety to keep the oil from foaming, McComb says. The chemical is a form of silicone also used in cosmetics and Silly Putty. A review of animal studies by The World Health Organization found no adverse health effects associated with dimethylpolysiloxane. TBHQ is a preservative for vegetable oils and animal fats, limited to .02 percent of the oil in the nugget. One gram (one-thirtieth of an ounce) can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse,” according to “A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives.” In 2003, McDonald’s launched smaller, all-white-meat McNuggets after a federal judge dubbed the food “a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook.” Among the ingredients that remained in the new McNuggets: tBHQ and dimethylpolysiloxane. Christopher Kimball, the founder and publisher of Cook’s Illustrated magazine and host of the syndicated cooking show America’s Test Kitchen, says he suspects these chemicals are required for the nuggets to hold their shape and texture after being extruded into nugget-shaped molds “The regulations in Europe, in general, around food are much stricter than the U.S.,” …Kimball says… added by: eden49

‘Letters To Juliet’ Is A ‘Perfect Love Story,’ Christopher Egan Says

‘It feels like real characters with real issues,’ the actor says of the film. By Jocelyn Vena Christopher Egan Photo: MTV News It’s probably common for an actor to swoon over Amanda Seyfried while shooting a film with the beautiful actress. So when Christopher Egan had to play up his character’s negative views about true love to counteract Seyfried’s positive outlook , he knew it was only a matter of time before Charlie would cave in and eventually see the brighter side of love that Sophie saw all along. “I like that it’s coming from a place of loving his grandmother,” he told MTV News about the flick, which opens Friday. “I think you can forgive him because of the loss that he’s had in his life. He’s so protective over his grandmother and this whole idea of tramping across the countryside to find this Lorenzo that’s so foreign to him, that’s so before his time — it’s too confusing for him. And the fact that Amanda’s character is so attractive is also what frustrates Charlie.” Whether Charlie and Sophie end up together is for the audience to find out, but the fact that Charlie and Sophie even entertain the idea of being with each other despite their differences is refreshing for Egan. “I think it’s nice in our movie that they don’t just hit it off straight away and it’s all just happy ever after,” he explained. “It feels like real characters with real issues and I think that’s the perfect love story — two characters that hate each other in the beginning, but end up transforming over the course of the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Letters to Juliet.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jessica Simpson Says She’s Not ‘Wild’ Enough To Join Smashing Pumpkins

‘I don’t know that I can stand onstage and represent Billy the way he is,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: MTV News Jessica Simpson recently worked with Billy Corgan on her new song “Who We Are” — so is there any chance that Simpson could become a member of Corgan’s band the Smashing Pumpkins in the future? “I don’t know that I would be a good addition to the Smashing Pumpkins,” she joked. “You gotta be a little bit more wild and crazy.” She admitted that perhaps her image isn’t a right fit for Corgan and his group. “I mean, I have some crazy moments in my life or things about me, but I don’t know that I can stand onstage and represent Billy the way he is,” she added. “He does that fine on his own.” Despite their differences, Simpson regards Corgan as a “dear friend” and shared that he was a great help to her when she recorded her latest track. “I asked him to help out with arranging the song,” she explained. “And he had some ideas to change it up a bit musically and some really cool arrangements and some great guitar things.” Simpson said that working with Corgan really taught her a lot. “To be able to sit with Billy [is a learning experience], and I always feel comfortable with him ’cause he is a close friend of mine,” she said. “And I know he had my best interest at heart and it was great to be able to collaborate with him and to have him there in the studio.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Jessica Simpson

Inward Eye Pay Tribute To Vancouver At Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony

Winnipeg-based band electrifies BC Place along with a mass of snowboarders. By Josh Wigler Inward Eye Photo: Tyrone Kerr/ FilmMagic The 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver ended with a massive victory for Team Canada over Team USA in men’s hockey, marking one of the single greatest athletic achievements in Canadian history and leading to an energetic and celebratory performance by Winnipeg rockers “Inward Eye” during the closing ceremony Sunday (February 28). Consisting of brothers Dave, Kevin and Anders Erickson, Inward Eye led the charge as a mass of snowboarders flooded the floor of BC Place and gathered around the lit torches at the center of the stadium. The band provided an upbeat rendition of the song “Vancouver,” leading the thousands of people gathered before the stage to leap up and down with unrestrained bliss, chanting the words “Oh, oh, oh, Vancouver” along with the members of the band. “Wow, that was a crazy feeling stepping out in front of 65,000 people and a few billion watching at home,” lead singer Dave Erickson wrote on the band’s MySpace page shortly after the energetic performance. “All I could think was, ‘Don’t fall off the stage!’ ” Commentator and sports journalist Bob Costas described the Inward Eye performance as representative of the differences between the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. “The opening ceremony is long on ceremonial aspects and protocol; the closing is much less so,” he assessed. “It’s a big party, and it will go long into the Vancouver night.” The sibling trio of Inward Eye have performed together since 1997, but the band only recently launched its debut album, Throwing Bricks Instead of Kisses, in August. Following the conclusion of their worldwide television debut, it’s likely Inward Eye status in the global music scene is only just beginning. “It feels good right now,” Erickson said. “Time to kick back and enjoy the moment.” Related Artists Inward Eye

Obama details plan for uninsured before Healthcare Summit

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Monday laid out for the first time a detailed legislative proposal for overhauling health care. His plan sticks largely to the approach passed by the Senate with unified Democratic support, but it makes concessions to the House version, which was more expensive and would have covered more people. Mr. Obama’s proposal is the opening act to a week of high drama around health care that will culminate on Thursday, when the president convenes Democrats and Republicans at an all-day televised health care “summit” at Blair House. The White House is hoping the session can jump start the stalled health bill. “We view this as the opening bid for the health meeting,” Dan Pfeiffer, Mr. Obama’s communications director, told reporters Monday morning, adding, “We took our best shot at bridging the differences.” The bill is intended to achieve Mr. Obama’s broad goals of expanding coverage to the uninsured while driving down health premiums and imposing what the White House calls “common sense rules of the road” for insurers, including ending the unpopular practice of discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions. The measure is posted on the White House Web site. The White House projects that the bill would extend coverage to 31 million people who are currently uninsured, at a cost over 10 years of $950 billion — more than the $871 billion the Senate would have spent, but less than the $1.05 trillion for the version passed by the House. The administration estimates that its plan would reduce the federal deficit by $100 billion over the next 10 years — and about $1 trillion over the second decade — by cutting spending and reining in waste and fraud.
