M adam C.J. Walker is one of the most influential Black business owners in history and now a home that she once lived in will possibly be transformed into a hub for entrepreneurship. According to Lo Hud , billionaire Richelieu Dennis , who owns Sundial Brands and Essence, plans on turning her Irvington, New York Villa Lewaro mansion into an incubator space for women of color. Billionaire Richelieu Dennis of SheaMoisture, Essence shares vision for Irvington mansion https://t.co/ptextEoVkt pic.twitter.com/HRen6pNaUR — lohud.com (@lohud) December 19, 2018 Dennis wants to use the historic residence—which is 20,000-square-feet and has over 30 rooms—for the creation of an entrepreneurship program that will help women further their businesses through collaboration. “When people think of women’s empowerment and economic inclusion, they should think of Irvington,” said Dennis, during a meeting of the Irvington Village Board of Trustees. “The idea is we would create a think tank where we would have some of the some of the best minds in the country thinking about entrepreneurs and the challenges of entrepreneurship for women and women of color.” Dennis plans on restoring the mansion and then implementing the program. As a Liberian immigrant who came from humble beginnings, he sees a lot of parallels between he and Walker’s story and believes that the incubator will be a way to pay homage to the woman who was our country’s first Black woman self-made millionaire. “The Dennis family wants to make sure that Madam Walker’s legacy continues not only through the hair care products but also through this beautiful home that was intended by Madam Walker as a place that would inspire others,” Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles told the news outlet. “They embody it themselves and they understand why it is important for other people to be able to share the vibrations that come from that house.” The home was constructed 100 years ago by Black architect Vertner Tandy . According to Fox13News, 22-year-old Halid Dedic was arrested following a dodgeball game where he lost his cool with a 15-year-old who hit him with a ball– we thought that was kind of the point of the game, but we digress. “He then charged the victim and attempted to tackle him only to then stand back up and charge the victim again. The defendant then open hand slapped the victim,” according to an arrest affidavit. Witnesses told the cops that Dedic was heavy in his trash talking bag to the other kids who were playing. A new poll of Iowa Democrats released on Saturday revealed how they viewed the chances of two potential African-American candidates to beat President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. SEE ALSO: Here’s Another Sign That Cory Booker Is Running For President Nearly a third of Iowa Democrats said they would choose former Vice President Joe Biden as their top choice in the Iowa Caucuses, Politico reported. Sens. Kamala Harris of California and New Jersey’s Cory Booker were in the middle of a crowded field of about 20 candidates. These politicians have not announced their intention to run for president, and the Iowa caucus is months away— scheduled for Feb. 3, 2020. Still, this poll is considered an early indicator of the mood among Democrats. Iowa is the first state in the presidential nominating process. The winner has won the Democratic presidential nomination in six consecutive election cycles, according to Politico. In 2008, Iowa Caucus Democrats gave then-Sen. Barack Obama its seal of approval . Harris said that she’s “ not ruling out ” a 2020 presidential run. The Washington Post ranked her third in July among likely Democratic candidates to win the party’s nomination—behind Sanders and Warren. A majority of the Iowa Democrats who were polled, 54 percent, said they want a candidate who could defeat Trump in 2020. About 40 percent said they are looking for a candidate who shares their views on key issues. They believe that Biden has the best chance of topping the president. At the same time, he was also the best-liked candidate in the field. About 82 percent of them had a favorable view of the former vice president. Additionally, Biden and Sanders led the pack in name recognition. S pelman College recently received a major gift to push the institution’s educational initiatives forward. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution , that Atlanta-based HBCU was given a $30 million donation from one of it’s trustees and her husband. Spelman College received the largest gift from living donors in its 137-year history, a $30 million donation from long-standing Spelman trustee Ronda Stryker and spouse William Johnston. https://t.co/iyESorL89s — AtlBizChron (@AtlBizChron) December 14, 2018 The donation—which was made by Ronda Stryker and William Johnston —was the largest contribution from living donors in the school’s 137-year history, the news outlet writes. It will go towards the creation of Spelman’s new Center for Innovation & the Arts. The facility will serve as a hub for programs related to art, film and photography, digital media, and dance. It will also include a theater, café, and an expansion of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Arts. Stryker—who is an executive at the Fortune 500 Company Stryker Corporation—joined Spelman’s board of trustees in 1997. She’s now the vice chair of the Spelman College Board of Trustees and leads the board’s Arts, Innovation & Technology Committee. Throughout the years she’s made several contributions to the institution; helping it to grow its study abroad program, providing funding for STEM initiatives, helping out with the expansion of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Arts and growing the school’s annual fund. “As former educators who believe strongly in social justice, Bill and I have great appreciation for how Spelman provides a superior education for students that encourages them to be global change agents,” Stryker said in a statement . “Spelman alumnae are leaders across every field imaginable, breaking new ground, while tackling some of the world’s most challenging issues from health disparities to the digital divide. We are thrilled to support a building that will encourage students to master technology, innovation and the arts.” Spelman College president Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D. expressed her gratitude for Stryker and her husband’s contribution, stating that it will ensure that students will “be prepared to tackle the challenges of our changing world through innovation, creativity and the dynamic intersection of science, technology, engineering, arts and math.” Several donors have been stepping up to further programs at HBCUs. In March, Howard University alumnus Wendell E. Mackey, CFA made a $250,000 donation to the institution’s business school. Bloomberg reports: Apple engineers have been working on an initiative dubbed Digital Health, a series of tools to help users monitor how much time they spend on their devices and inside of certain applications. These details will be bundled into a menu inside of the Settings app in iOS 12, the likely name of Apple’s refreshed mobile operating system, according to people familiar with the plans. Former Apple exec Tony Gadell said, “We need to have tools and data to allow us to understand how we consume digital media… We need to get finer-grain language and start to understand that an iPhone is just a refrigerator, it’s not the addiction.”
