LA Film Critics Name ‘Amour’ Best Picture, Boost ‘The Master,’ Jazz Up Oscar Race

After so much Zero Dark Thirty domination from the New York Film Critics Circle, their West Coast counterparts in the Los Angeles Film Critics Association made a splash with more art house-leaning picks, voting Michael Haneke ‘s Amour the best film of 2012 — technically a foreign language entry, though Leos Carax’s Holy Motors earned that honor. (I see what you did there, LAFCA — and I like it.) LA critics also showed love for Beasts of the Southern Wild , whose non-professional actor/NOLA-area baker Dwight Henry earned a Best Supporting Actor nod, launching his awards season prospects. Get the full winners after the jump along with results from today’s awards announcements from the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Online groups, both boosters of Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty … LA Film Critics Association 2012 Award Honorees: Best Picture: Amour (Runner-up: The Master ) Best Director: Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master (Runner-up: Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty ) Best Actress: (TIE) Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook and Emmanuelle Riva, Amour Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix, The Master (Runner-up: Denis Lavant, Holy Motors ) Best Supporting Actor: Dwight Henry, Beasts of the Southern Wild (Runner-up: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained ) Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, The Master (Runner-up: Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knight Rises and Les Misérables ) Best Screenplay: Argo (Runner-up: Silver Linings Playbook ) Best Film Editing: Zero Dark Thirty (Runner-up: Argo ) Best Cinematography: Skyfall (Runner-up: The Master ) Best Foreign Film: Holy Motors (Runner-up: Footnote ) Best Documentary: The Gatekeepers (Runner-up: Searching for Sugar Man ) Best Animation: Frankenweenie (Runner-up: It’s Such a Beautiful Day ) Best Music/Score: Beasts of the Southern Wild (Runner-up: The Master ) Best Production Design: The Master (Runner-up: Moonrise Kingdom ) New Generation Award: Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild Douglas Edwards Experimental/Independent Film/Video Award: Leviathan Not all of LAFCA ‘s picks are watertight, IMO ( Frankenweenie over ParaNorman ? Oh, fine …) but the organization deserves massive kudos for going against the grain with the majority of their awards when every other critics group so far has played it so safe. Among LAFCA’s greater surprises, which please me greatly: Love for Beasts of the Southern Wild ‘s Dwight Henry, who’s magnificent alongside Quvenzhane Wallis (who’s also got some solid Oscar buzz of her own going, at just 9 years old); Roger Deakins’ win for Skyfall , which elicited cheers from his boosters during LAFCA’s 5-hour-plus voting meeting ; the fact that Joaquin Phoenix ‘s snarly, gnarly turn in The Master was recognized amid a season of Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln adoration — and that the runner-up for Best Actor wasn’t even DD-L, but Holy Motors ‘ Denis Lavant. LAFCA also gets points in my book for refusing to let buzz dictate voting, even if Amour ‘s Emmanuelle Riva had to share the win with Silver Linings Playbook Oscar front-runner Jennifer Lawrence , and despite the fact that even in naming Anne Hathaway a Best Supporting Actress runner-up for Les Miserables they also tacked on her turn as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises . Meanwhile, as if one five-hour critics award deliberation live-Tweet wasn’t enough to occupy a Sunday afternoon, the Boston critics also announced their awards , which yielded some surprising love for Perks of Being a Wallflower : Best Film: Zero Dark Thirty (Runner-up: TIE – Amour and Moonrise Kingdom ) Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty (Runner-up: Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master ) Best Screenplay: Lincoln (Runner-up: Moonrise Kingdom ) Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln (Runner-up: Denis Lavant, Holy Motors ) Best Actress: Emmanuelle Riva, Amour (Runner-up: Deanie Yip, A Simple Life ) Best Supporting Actor: Ezra Miller, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Runner-up Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained ) Best Supporting Actress: Sally Field, Lincoln (Runner-up: Emma Watson, The Perks of Being a Wallflower ) Best Cinematography: The Master (Runner-up: TIE – Life of Pi , Moonrise Kingdom ) Best Ensemble: Seven Psychopaths (Runner-up: Moonrise Kingdom ) Best Animated Film: Frankenweenie (Runner-up: ParaNorman ) Best Documentary: How to Survive a Plague (Runner-up: The Queen of Versailles ) Best Foreign Language Film: Amour (Runner-up: Holy Motors ) Best Editing: Zero Dark Thirty (Runner-up: Argo ) Best Use of Music: Moonrise Kingdom (Runner-up: Django Unchained ) Best New Filmmaker: David France, How to Survive a Plague (Runner-up: Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild ) And over in New York, the New York Film Critics Online (the digital critics group in NYC, not to be confused with the New York Film Critics Circle, which can be confusing), made some very similar picks, leaning a bit more toward Oscar favorites like Tommy Lee Jones, whose supporting turn in Lincoln is a sure thing for an Academy Award nomination. Best Picture: Zero Dark Thirty Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln Best Actress: Emmanuelle Riva, Amour Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables Best Screenplay: Zero Dark Thirty Best Cinematography: Claudio Miranda, Life of Pi Best Documentary: Central Park Five Best Animated Film: Chico & Rita Best Ensemble Cast: Argo Debut Director: Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild Best Use of Music: Django Unchained Breakthrough Performance: Quvenzhané Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild Of note here: Argo winning the “Best Ensemble Cast” award is probably indicative of how things are going to go for Ben Affleck’s real-life political thriller now that Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty has stolen all of its thunder. It’s also interesting to see how both Boston and NYFCO choose to honor film music with the award for “Best Use of Music,” which opens the category beyond just score or soundtrack; Benh Zeitlin’s original Beasts score is a wonderment in itself, but how do you compare it to Quentin Tarantino dropping a Rick Ross track into his Southern slavery exploitation homage? Reading Rainbow Remix: LeVar Burton Auto-Tuned!

PBS has released a remixed Reading Rainbow video montage, and it’s as awesome as it sounds. The show, starring LeVar Burton, aired for 30 years and is still teaching kids each year how to read, through reruns and a 2012 digital re-launch as an iPad app. Host and producer Burton picked a different theme each week – maps, inventions, etc. – and go from there. The hip Reading Rainbow remix pays homage to him: Reading Rainbow Remix The latest in a series of remixed PBS icons was produced by Symphony of Science’s John D. Boswell (a.k.a., melodysheep) for the PBS Digital Studios YouTube channel. Earlier this year, they produced a similarly unreal Mister Rogers remix .

Shots Fired: Skincare Company ‘Nivea’ Brand Exec Says Rih-Rih Is Too Raunchy To Represent Their Brand!

Hi hater…. Nivea Skincare Exec Says Rihanna Is Too Raunchy To Represent The Brand An ad exec for the skincare company ‘Nivea’ says he’s not feelin’ Rih-Rih’s ratchet behavior and raunchy outfits as an image that should be associated with their brand. The company was originally thrilled to have the Barbados-born banger on board as a spokesperson, but they seemed to have changed their mind in light of……recent events. She’s known for her sexy attitude, raunchy outfits and outrageous behaviour. So it comes as little surprise that Rihanna’s advert for Nivea has been deemed too sexy to front campaigns for the skincare brand. The star appeared in a series of adverts for the firm, which was a sponsor of her world tour last year, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company. And now cosmetic tycoon Stefan Heidenreich – the new head of Nivea’s parent firm, Beiersdorf – has told German media that the singer should have been considered a ‘no go’ for the brand’s family image. The 49-year-old said: ‘The advert starring Rihanna was a no go. I do not understand how Nivea can be brought into association with Rihanna.’ In one ad, a family is seen moisturising with Nivea while Rihanna’s sultry hit California King Bed plays in the background. Heidenreich added: ‘Nivea is a company which stands for trust, family and reliability.’ When Nivea signed up the star last year they said they were ‘very excited’ to have her on board. Nivea board member Markus Pinger said in a press release at the time: ‘Over the past 100 years, Nivea has been an iconic skin-care brand across the world. ‘Rihanna is a music icon and her digital footprint will help us bring our anniversary celebration to consumers wherever they are. Hmmm. We wonder if Rih will start to tone it down now since this is messing with her money…. Source

In Honor of the Batpod, 9 Other Memorable Movie Motorcycles

The Dark Knight Rises finally arrives this weekend, and curiously, amid the hype attending Christopher Nolan and his top-flight cast , two other performers have been strongly covered in the media: The behemoth tank that is The Tumbler , and the exciting off-shoot vehicle known as The Batpod. Considering the latter is one of the most arresting two-wheelers ever featured on-screen, we celebrate its revival by highlighting nine other curiosities Hollywood has offered up in the motorcycle category. Captain America Chopper – Easy Rider At first it might seem a pedestrian selection, but upon release in 1969 this was in fact a striking departure for motorcycle design. Following World War II, returning veterans kicked off a wave of automotive redesign with self-created modifications; garage-built hot rods rose in popularity, and similar to that were the emergence of “bobbers,” motorcycles mechanically altered by their owners. This involved taking a showroom motorcycle and trimming away parts deemed superfluous, such as fenders and foot boards, in an effort to make a streamlined and lighter bike. By the 1960s bobbing gave way to more extreme experimentation. Owners began making changes to the basic structure of the motorcycle itself, cutting and welding the frames into new shapes in a practice called “chopping.” This produced wholesale alterations to the appearance, and Easy Rider opened America’s eyes to the new practice. Features such as the lowered rider position, extended forks, and raised sissy-bar seat backs were stark visions at the time, and soon the term “chopper” entered the national lexicon to describe the lengthened cruising style motorcycle. Light Cycles – Tron , Tron Legacy It’s one thing to design a new look to motorcycles artistically, but to have that creation become iconic makes a real statement. Initially conceived for the video visual realm in the original movie, the light cycles quickly became one of the most popular components of the cult classic. These concept vehicles even became a linchpin component to the related video game. When Disney announced plans to remake their property years ago, much of the anticipation surrounded what the new light cycles would look like, and the studio made the digital vehicles a center point in their marketing. Where previously the design involved the characters morphing into a pixilated cycle, the new version had the rider stretched forward across and becoming incorporated into the cycle, remaining visible on camera. Even as both films had a number of detractors, the light cycles from each have maintained high levels of appreciation. Kaneda’s Street Bike – Akira What is probably the most popular anime out of Japan is one that instantly calls to mind a lone visual; any mention of the title automatically provokes the image of this highly-stylized motorcycle. Conceived with a futuristic combination of street-bike esthetics and over-sized touring-bike comfort, this vehicle provokes envy while challenging engineering. There have been many attempts over the years to replicate the physics of this hand-drawn creation into a reality (Kanye West even commissioned one to be built for a music video), but the results of those builds to date have underwhelmed. Fans still hold out hope that the proposed, yet oft-delayed, live-action version of the film will someday bring about a fully realized physical version of the famed bike. The Lawmaster – Judge Dredd When Sylvester Stallone donned the famous helmet of the violent jurist (and angered many by removing said helmet), he also had to carry forward other elements from the British comic. The opulent uniform was both true to form and ridiculous in execution (the codpiece was a nice touch); conversely, his famous ride paled in comparison to the comic origins. This is due to the motorcycle having rather cartoonish features in print, so when Stallone rode into frame for his introduction, the famed Lawmaster came off as almost a disappointment, and thus an afterthought. At the recent Comic-Con, footage of the reboot generated positive responses. Hopefully the producers worked on this detail. The Bonnevile Bike – The World’s Fastest Indian Some may have questioned Anthony Hopkins trying to pass himself as a Native American, but the Indian in the title actually refers to the make of motorcycle featured in the film. This is the true story of a New Zealand motorcycle racer named Burt Munro, who, in the 1960s, set a series of land-speed records on a bike of his own creation. Rather than state-of-the-art engineering, Munro modified his cycle entirely in his own garage simply with the tools at his disposal. More stunning was his doing so using a nearly 50-year old motorcycle. He cracked the 200mph threshold on his archaic ride, and even more amazingly, one of his speed records is still in place today. The Demon Chopper – Ghost Rider As a child stunt rider Johnny Blaze sells his soul to the Devil; later in life he is enlisted by Old Scratch to serve as a bounty hunter. In paying off his debt, Blaze changes into The Ghost Rider, and as he does the motorcycle transforms as well — into a rather daft looking set piece. As Johnny is full ablaze he lays his hands on the gas tank of his cherished bike (probably not the wisest move), and we watch as his ride morphs into a garish piece of machinery with a massive skull perched between the handlebars, long forks made of chain link, and an aforementioned gas tank webbed with bony fingers. The end result truly appears less a menacing conveyance from Hades than it does a goofy prop you’d likely see on stage during a GWAR concert. The V-Rex – Fast & Furious The fourth iteration of this car-intensive series features Paul Walker perched in the saddle of this wildly conceived motorcycle. The futuristic appearance also features a unique design function. The front wheel is not held by a traditional fork assembly but instead has a swing-arm mount, the sort normally seen as a rear-wheel set up. It is dampened by a solitary large shock absorber positioned beneath the twin halogen headlamps. This gives a vaguely robotic appearance, one which was actually pitched to Michael Bay as a possible component for the second Transformers . (He ultimately dismissed featuring a robotic motorcycle gang in that franchise.) Rather than a piece of fancy from a Hollywood design garage, this vehicle is actually a production model by Travertson, a Florida manufacturer. Moto Terminators – Terminator: Salvation One of the components included in the attempt at rejuvenation of this franchise was a collection of automaton two-wheeled terminators, outfitted with heavy ordnance and shown as distinctively riderless. The automatic gun turrets featured an articulated mounting that served as counter-balancing when the motorcycle leaned into turns. Sporting artificial intelligence and rocket launchers, the end result was a motorcycle gang on the roads more intimidating than the Hell’s Angels. The Turbine Bike – Priest Last summer’s Priest was soon forgotten by those few who watched it, and yet there has been one enduring memory: The title character’s motorcycle. The story is an odd one, set in both in a dystopian future and an alternate universe, involving a centuries-long battle between humans and vampires. Paul Bettany plays a warrior priest who breaks from the church to wage a battle, yadda-yadda. The one takeaway for most viewers was the striking bike Bettany uses to run down a train carrying vampires, a curiosity featuring an impressive turbine engine, mounted where one might normally expect the gas tank to be found. BONUS: Tricked-Out Scooter – Quadrophenia In this 1979 film adaptation of the classic Who album, disillusioned youths play out a dramatic existence in London, and mini-motor-bikes feature prominently. Some may find it a stretch to conjure a fully appointed Lambretta scooter serving as a metaphor, but the appearance of the multi-mirrored ride is enough to bring about a grin. Katy Perry Says She ‘Did Everything’ To Save Her Marriage

Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ documentary gives fans a candid look at the demise of her relationship with Russell Brand. By Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry in the “Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D” trailer Photo: It’s been a whirlwind of a year for pop superstar Katy Perry . In 2011, she earned six #1 singles off her Teenage Dream album, embarked on a worldwide tour and endured a very public breakup from Russell Brand . And now fans can share all these experiences and more as Perry is set to release her 3-D documentary, “Part of Me,” on July 5th. The movie chronicles her unparalleled year as she has career highs, but suffers personal lows. And it’s those very personal moments, especially with Brand, that many will find most surprising. For the past six months, Perry has been mum on the issue of her divorce, and now for the first time, she is opening up about the split. The film picks up just a few months after the two tied the knot , as Perry embarks on her biggest tour to date, the California Dreams Tour. Fans witness Perry put in hours of hard work preparing for the tour and traveling to hundreds of different cities. Yet, with the success that she was having onstage, it was offstage where things were falling apart. It seems her new marriage and a grueling tour schedule were not mixing well, but it was not from lack of trying: Perry was adamant that while on her nearly yearlong tour, she take time out to see her husband, but in the end, it just couldn’t save the marriage. At one point, while flying to one of her tour stops, Perry admits to the camera, “I’m trying to keep my marriage alive.” “Part of Me” gives fans a rare glimpse inside a celebrity marriage, with Brand featured throughout the film. Some moments are touching, like when the comedian comes to wish her well on the opening night of her tour, yet some are heartbreaking to watch. In one scene, Perry is crying uncontrollably, delaying the start time of the concert, but like a true professional, she chokes back the tears and puts on a brave face for her fans. Perry talks candidly about Brand in the film, revealing that it was her skyrocketing career that could have played into the downfall of her marriage. “I thought to myself, ‘When I find that person that’s going to be my life partner, I won’t ever have to choose [between the partner and my career]. They won’t be threatened or have weird motives.’ Then I started to realize, that’s not true,” she admits. Yet, when asked in the film whether she still misses Brand, Perry begins to cry and admits that she does, but says she did everything she could to make it work. “I have that same belief system with everything, from career to my life to my personal life, everything. And I will do everything it takes to not fail,” she shares. “And I did everything it took, but it still failed.” Perry recently told MTV News that even though the subject of her divorce is difficult to deal with, she felt she would be doing her fans a disservice if she didn’t include it in the film. “The truth will always prevail,” Perry said. “Everything has to be handled integrously and appropriately, and it’s not nice to air all your dirty laundry, because that stinks, so I had to be very delicate with the situation, but I couldn’t avoid the elephant in the room,” she explained. “If you were to have seen that movie and walked out and [my breakup] wasn’t at all mentioned, like it never happened, you’d be like, ‘Eh, this is weird. What is she trying to hide?’ I don’t like to hide.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Flaming Lips Reveal Guests For World-Record Road Trip

During O Music Awards, ‘Jackass’ star Chris Pontius, Neon Trees and Jackson Browne will join the Lips as they try to land Guinness spot. By Brendan Dempsey Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips Photo: It’s no secret that the Flaming Lips have their sights set on the Guinness World Record for most concerts performed in multiple cities in a 24-hour time period. The innovative rockers have just announced they will be joined by “Jackass” and “Wildboyz” star Chris Pontius, Jackson Browne, Neon Trees, Karmin and a slew of additional artists as they gun for the record, currently held by Jay-Z, who played seven shows from Atlanta to L.A. in 2006. The Flaming Lips and friends plan to play eight shows from Memphis, Tennessee, to New Orleans, beginning Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET and continuing for 24 hours. The gigs will take place in conjunction with the O Music Awards, a 24-hour awards ceremony that will be broadcast on MTV, VH1 and CMT and livestream at Omusicawards.com. The Flaming Lips will jump aboard their aptly named bus, “Endeavor,” and travel to each new location just as the opening band is finishing its set. They’ll perform what promises to be a raucous and exciting mini-set before moving on to the next location. The O Music Awards ceremony will give out 24 awards, one for each hour of the festival. Categories that artists are vying to win include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award. “The O Music Awards are all about the celebrating the wonderfully messy and soulful spirit of music,” said Van Toffler, President of Viacom’s Music and Logo Group. “This insane bus brigade and the assorted collection of artists and pranksters that are taking part not only make me incredibly happy, but pretty much sum up what a good 24 hour binge should involve, minus the libations.” Along with the pomp and circumstance of winning awards, the first 12 installments of Stop/Watch will air during the concerts. Stop/Watch is a 60-second online music series in which artists have one minute flat to perform a complete song — with a countdown clock running! The first 12 Stop/Watch artists are: Joseph Arthur, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Citizen’s Band, John Forte, the Hives, Rhett Miller, Miracles of Modern Science, Peasant, Punch Brothers, Saint Motel, P.T. ‘Prometheus’ FX Supervisor Gives Inside Look At First Scene

Martin Hill tells the Daily how he set the stage with the visually arresting opening scene. By Kevin P. Sullivan An Engineer in “Prometheus” Photo: This article contains “Prometheus” spoilers. Ridley Scott’s ” Prometheus ” begins with some of the film’s most arresting images. A hairless, pale-skinned Engineer stands atop a waterfall. He drinks a liquid that we may never learn more about, disintegrates and, in turn, creates all of life on Earth. The visuals set the stage for the rest of the film and show Scott’s use of 3-D simultaneously, and now, new videos from the Daily explore the effects work that went into making that shot and the Prometheus’ crash with the Engineer ship. Visual effects supervisor Martin Hill from WETA Digital goes into great detail during his interview about the opening sequence, the creation of life. Not only was the team challenged with creating an impressive visual, but one that succinctly told a complex story. “Because we had such a short amount of time to tell the story of the DNA getting infected, breaking apart, and then re-forming and recombining to show Earth DNA, we had to make the designs of the different DNA quite graphical, quite illustrative of what they were,” Hill said. After some time, the sequence shifts to the microscopic level, traveling inside the veins of the Engineer. For those sequences, Scott instructed the visual effects team to emphasize the destruction being done. “The Engineer’s DNA, we thought, ‘This needs to be quite sinister, but we know it’s going to get infected, and the infection has to look more messed up than the Engineer’s DNA,’ ” Hill said. “We used quite a light color palette for Engineer’s DNA, and then the infection comes on and it’s very melted looking. Ridley actually said to us, ‘It has to feel like war in there. The DNA is just being torn apart.’ ” The actual scene of genetic destruction came together from computer-generated elements, but the inspiration for the look came from a very real-life source of inspiration. “We try to use as much reality as possible, so we were looking at all different kinds of reference, so eventually we settled on fish bones, actual decayed fish spines, to represent the structure of the DNA,” Hill said. “For the infection that rolls across the infected DNA, what we did was carve actual blocks of silicone with the vein structures in there and pumped black ink and oils and all kinds of different materials through those, filmed them, and used the motion of those as the basis for all of our effects for the veins and the effect coursing through his body.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prometheus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
