Andy Samberg Will Miss ‘So Many Things’ About ‘SNL’

‘I’ll definitely miss … being able to do comedy on such a storied show,’ Samberg tells MTV News about his ‘Saturday Night Live’ exit. By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News Andy Samberg’s announcement that he’ll no longer be a part of “Saturday Night Live” starting next season surprised precisely no one. The comedian’s possible exit had been rumored for months, with buzz recently reaching a boiling point thanks to the closing lyrics of “Lazy Sunday 2,” his final Digital Short: “On these New York streets I hone my fake rap penmanship/ That’s how it began, and that’s how I’mma finish it.” But even though Samberg is walking away after a seven-season run, don’t think the comedian arrived at the decision easily. MTV News spoke with Samberg and his co-star (and fellow “SNL” alum) Adam Sandler as they promoted “That’s My Boy,” and the Lonely Island artist revealed that there’s a lot he’ll miss about working on the show, his colleagues most of all. “The people and the friends, definitely,” Samberg told MTV News ahead of the Movie Awards on Sunday night. “I’ve been saying it a lot — I’m going to miss all of my friends and the people I work with. I love them all so much, and I’m hoping to stay in touch with them.” That said, Samberg feels very strongly about the choice to depart the New York-based late-night comedy series. “Over seven years, that show is like — and [Sandler] knows — it’s like going to war or being on a sports team,” he said. “It’s just everyone working towards this common goal at full speed. When you lift your head up from that and go out into the world, you kind of realize, you’ll always be nicely shell-shocked in a way that only the people who did it with you can understand. I’ll definitely miss having such an amazing outlet and being able to do comedy on such a storied show that everyone pays attention to, but … ” “But now you can do it on YouTube,” Sandler interrupted. “Right,” Samberg laughed. “Now it’s straight to YouTube.” Sandler, like Samberg, certainly knows what it’s like to walk away from “SNL.” After leaving the show in 1995, he found enormous success through movies like “Billy Madison,” “Happy Gilmore” and many more. With Sandler’s many achievements in mind, we asked the Happy Madison founder what he thought of Samberg’s decision to say so long to Saturday night. “He’s doing it all right,” said the comedian. “This guy cares about being a good person first, and I love that about him. He’s a hard-working fool when he wants to be, and he’s really a smart, talented and great guy. I know he’s going to do everything he wants to do. “I was aggressive back in the day. I was driven and needed to get my movies made and blah blah blah. He’s less nutty about it,” Sandler continued. “He’s a very passionate and smart guy who knows about what should come first, and that’s life. Right? Something like that?” “Yeah,” Samberg enthusiastically replied. “Right!” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Jersey Shore Cast: ALL Sober in Solidarity With Snooki and Sitch?

Is the Jersey Shore cast, which just started filming Season 6, staying off the sauce to stand in solidarity with pregnant Snooki and newly-detoxed Situation? The gang hit up a bar last night in their first outing of the summer, and while Sitch was there, he reportedly didn’t have anything to drink. Willpower, dog! The Situation has said he was not in rehab for alcohol, but his trip to Cirque Lodge was indeed for both prescription drugs (which he admits) and alcohol. The crazy part is that not only did The Situation (and a pregnant Snooki) abstain from alcohol, the entire cast did as well, in an apparent show of support. Very cool of them if so, but obviously it’s a huge contrast from prior seasons. After all, this crew is famous for a show revolving around getting drunk and hooking up, and makes you wonder if the show has lived past its shelf life. Incidentally, they went to the bar where Snooki got punched in Season 1.

Andy Samberg Confirms Saturday Night Live Departure

Confirming rumors that have been circulating for months, and which were punctuated by his performance of Lazy Sunday 2 on the Saturday Night Live season finale last month, Andy Samberg has confirmed that he’s exiting the iconic sketch show. “It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life,” Samberg told The New York Times yesterday in a telephone interview. “Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back.” Samberg joined SNL in 2005 and went on to become the master of the Digital Short. He can also do a mean impression of Nicholas Cage. Referring to this move as “one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” the comedian will next be seen alongside Adam Sandler in this summer’s That My Boy . His depature follows that of Kristen Wiig, who was given an emotional send-off on that same season finale.

Justin Bieber, Saturday Night Live Celebrate 100 Digital Shorts

Justin Bieber helped Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone celebrate their 100th Digital Short this weekend on Saturday Night Live , but the teenager immediately regretted doing so after he learned just how the pair planned on touting the feat. “Tonight we are celebrating our 100th short,” Samberg sings in the following video. “Congratulations to us, truly a major milestone. Guess what we’re going to do? Tonight, we’re gonna suck our own c-ck.” Wait… what?!? Justin responds. Saturday Night Live Digital Short: 100th Celebration At various points, former Digital Short stars such as Natalie Portman, Michael Bolton and Jon Hamm also showed up. So did Justin Timberlake, who, of course, is responsible for the most memorable edition of all-time. In case you forgot, we have four words for you: D-ck in a Box . Host Will Ferrell joined in the festivities as well, concluding the video with: “I do endorse this song. My name is Will Ferrell and I’m sucking my own dong.”

Usher Keeps It Smooth On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Plus Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake and others make special cameos in the show’s 100th Digital Short segment. By James Dinh Usher on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC Exactly one month before his new album, Looking 4 Myself , hits shelves, the wheels of Usher ‘s promotional wagon gained momentum when the entertainer provided America with a set of contrasting performances and chuckles during this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” episode, which was hosted by “SNL” alum Will Ferrell. Rocking simple black jeans, a jacket and tee, and a faux hawk, Ursh looked vibrant and energetic as he performed his brand-new single “Scream.” Unlike previous expertly choreographed numbers for his dance tunes, the sunglass-donning singer showed off minimal, but nonetheless slick, moves, while his band and two backup singers filled his Studio 8 back stage. “We at it again, ‘SNL,’ and this time we going to make you scream,” he told the crowd at the start of the energetic cut. His second performance was for the Diplo-produced cut “Climax,” during which the singer showed off his sensual and smooth side. Clearing the area of his accompanying singers, Usher made his smooth falsetto the forefront of the number. It was a simple, authentic rendition of the hit song that was essential proof of his multi-faceted vocal talents. In addition to his set of performances, the ATL singer appeared alongside Ferrell in the “2012 Funkytown Debate” skit, in which he played a character named Galactic Fantastic. Dressed in some sparkling duds and an oversized afro, the R&B entertainer played a wacky sidekick who brought in his singing voice to support Farrell’s side of the grooving song debate. Usher got even more airtime when he was joined by Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Michael Bolton, Will Ferrell and Natalie Portman, who all made special cameos in the episode’s special 100th Digital Short. Paying tribute to some of the most popular Shorts like “Di– in a Box” and “Shy Ronnie,” Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and the Biebs most fittingly put on a big-time celebration with accompanying jingle. It was an all-star affair and brought back some major giggles — especially when JT and Portman reprised their original Short roles. To add to the night’s surprises, Liam Neeson popped up during a “Weekend Update” segment for the Nicolas Cage parody “Get in the Cage.” Neeson’s upcoming summer flick “Battleship” was the main topic of conversation, with Samberg, as Cage, asking his usual “How am I not in that movie?!” Samberg went on to babble jealous nonsense about Neeson’s other flicks in his spot-on Cage impersonation. Like last week’s musical guest Rihanna , Mr. Raymond’s gig on the late-night sketch show marks his third appearance. And it’s one of the many stops that the singer will make to promote his upcoming project. He’s set to kick off the “Today” show’s summer concert series on Friday, perform at the Billboard Music Awards on May 20 and head overseas for Capital FM’s Summertime Ball 2012 in London in early June. Mick Jagger will perform double duty as host and musical guest on next week’s “Saturday Night Live” season finale. What did you think of Usher’s “SNL” performances? Sound off below. How the Wachowskis Came to Make a Super-Rare Appearance in New Doc Side by Side

Making its North American premiere next week at Tribeca , director Chris Kenneally’s digital-cinema study Side By Side has quite a bit going for it: There’s co-producer Keanu Reeves, narrating and leading interviews with an extraordinary range of filmmakers including Christopher Nolan, George Lucas, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh, Lars von Trier and numerous others. There’s great technical insight from Oscar-winning cinematographers like Vittorio Storaro, Wally Pfister, Anthony Dod Mantle and Dion Beebe. There’s scene-stealers like Joel Schumacher and shooter Geoff Boyle, who encapsulates the digital age with his trenchant summary, “We’re fucked.” But among all the experts, insights and disclosures herein, there’s one appearance in particular that makes Side by Side worth a look: The Wachowskis. While they’ve made seemingly random news posing for photos with Arianna Huffington and others, I can’t even find the last instance of a bona fide interview with Andy and Lana Wachowski. Roger Ebert talked to them a bit in 2008 , but for a real chat about their work or style, you’d probably have to go back to their Matrix days , when Lana was still Larry and they hadn’t yet settled completely behind their cloak of personal, professional and creative privacy. But there they are onscreen, filling Reeves and Kenneally in regarding the advancement of digital filmmaking and its influence on the Matrix and Speed Racer . And that’s not all. “The delivery system of cinema is going to change, and that’s almost kind of more exciting in a way for me, beside the actual cameras,” Lana says. “This very ancient system of putting a can of film on a truck, driving it to a city, unloading it — that’s being replaced.” And as for the social-media influence on filmgoing, Andy weighs in with his support: “In some way, the virtual experience is more rewarding, because there’s an actual dialogue going on.” There’s more, which you can see either at Tribeca (where Side by Side premieres Apr. 24 ) or when the film arrives in theaters and on VOD this August. All of which leads to the question: How did Kenneally and Reeves even get the two to agree to a sit-down with them? Kenneally sent the back story in a statement to Movieline: We are very fortunate and grateful for all the amazing people who shared their time, insights and knowledge with us for our documentary Side by Side . We were especially fortunate to have been able to interview the Wachowskis since they rarely do interviews. Andy and Lana have had a very successful and close relationship with Keanu, and I believe the reason they agreed to the interview was because of this friendship. The Wachowskis continue to create groundbreaking movies and they are truly pioneers in the use of digital technology. The images they were able to create in the Matrix Trilogy and on Speed Racer pushed the limits of filmmaking art and technology. There are beautiful shots in those films that had never been conceived of before. The Wachowskis were very busy working on their next film Cloud Atlas , which they are directing along with Tom Tykwer, in Berlin, Germany, but they found a few free hours for us one afternoon. Keanu, our producer Justin Szlasa and I flew to Berlin, set up our cameras quickly and got an amazing, insightful and at times hilarious interview. The Wachowskis had a unique, intelligent perspective on image creation, digital technology, editing, archival and couldn’t have been nicer or more welcoming to us. One of the highlights of the Side by Side journey for me was seeing Lana and Andy in the audience at our screening at the Berlin Film Festival. I had the chance to speak to them afterword. They were really happy for us and had a lot of kind words to say about Side by Side . Fantastic. Of course there are plenty of other interviewees and perspectives to catch in Side by Side ; learn more about the film and check out a few clips at its Tribeca Film Festival page . Rihanna To Make Third Appearance On ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘We Found Love’ singer will be the musical guest on the May 5 episode, hosted by Eli Manning. By John Mitchell Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Rihanna will hit the “Saturday Night Live” stage for the third time when she performs on the legendary sketch comedy show on May 5. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will host. The pop star has a long history with the show and has always been a standout guest. While she always nails it on stage for her musical performance, Rihanna also tends to pop up throughout the show to flex her comedy muscles in sketches and, most notably, in rumored-to-be-departing Andy Samberg’s buzzed-about digital shorts. Her first “Shy Ronnie” short landed an Emmy nomination and she reprised the role for another digital short over Halloween weekend in 2010, playing Clyde to Shy Ronnie’s Bonnie as the unlikely couple holds up a bank and Ronnie’s bashful nature causes their plan to go array. For all intents and purposes, Rihanna’s appearance is to promote both her album Talk That Talk and her film debut in the upcoming “Battleship,” but for those still keeping an eye on the happenings of Ri Ri and ex Chris Brown, it’s worth noting that May 5 is also Brown’s birthday, so get ready for plenty of “will Chris Brown show up for a surprise appearance” speculation. The gig will be Manning’s first time hosting, though he made a brief cameo when his brother, Peyton, hosted in 2007. Are you excited for Rihanna’s “SNL” return? Do you think Chris Brown will show up with some “Birthday Cake”? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Rihanna

I met Justin Bieber on the TODAY show on November 4, 2012 but I…

I met Justin Bieber on the TODAY show on November 4, 2012 but I just finally decided to make a Bieber expierence out of it! I got there at 4 am in and I’d say I was about the 100th person in line. I was a little worried because when I tried to meet Justin at The View, I was the first person in line and I didn’t even get to meet him at all. We waited in line for hours, but then they finally let us through into the barricaded area. I sprinted to a part of the barricades where the cameras were facing because I figured that’s where Justin’s interview would be and I would be able to see and hear the whole thing. Once he came out, everything happened so fast. Despite all the commotion, I thought of something a Belieber that I met in NYC once said to me, “You’ll meet Justin one day, don’t worry. And he looks even better in person”. It was funny because just the night before I was sitting in my bedroom crying because I had lost all hope of meeting Justin until I remembered what that Belieber said to. I knew she said I would meet him one day, but what did she know? I have a one in 20 million chance of meeting him, yet her words gave me enough hope to bother convincing my mom to let me skip the first half of school and bring me into NYC which is an hour away. I kept telling myself “Never Say Never, Mak”. Then he came even closer and my legs were shaking uncontrollably . The girl in front of me screamed “I love you. Do you love me back?” and he replied “I love you more”. The rest was a blur. I didn’t even remember to get my digital camera ready or to make sure my mom was recording on the video camera or think about what I was going to say or to even breathe. Next thing I knew he was in front of me, Sharpie in hand, holding my poster. He wrote his famous initials “JB” on my poster and I didn’t even have to ask. He was already moving on, so without thinking, I screamed, “Justin! I talked to you on Tumblr!” He stopped, looked back at me and said, “What?” I screamed, “Tumblr!” and he smiled that gorgeous smile and said, “Nice”. As fast as he came, he left. I was just another fan in the crowd, but it didn’t matter to me. My life was complete. My love spoke two words to me: “what” and “nice”. I will never forget it. But Justin kept on walking down the barricades, signing posters and saying Hi to all his Beliebers and my time was over. I turned to my mom, biggest smile on my face, and I asked “Did you get it?” She had the video camera by the way. She looked away and mumbled that she forgot to hit record. I burst into tears. I couldn’t believe. It all happened too fast for me to remember so I was relying on that video. I wanted to re-watch it over and over again, but now I couldn’t.  Then Justin did the interview and I was behind him the entire time. Literally. My head was right between Matt Lauer’s and Justin’s the entire interview. I was watching myself on the monitor and waving like crazy. Later, when we were driving home, my dad called and said that not only was I on the TODAY Show during the interview, but the part when I met Justin was also on TV! Maybe my mom didn’t record the video, but the TODAY Show crew was. P.S. At the time, I thought I had his Tumblr and that is why I said that to him, but now I’m not so sure if the Tumblr was a fake or not, so I sort of regret saying that to Justin. I wish I asked to take a picture with him instead. Link to the TODAY Show video : I talk to him at 1:33 and you can see me in the background of the interview around 3:13.  See more here: I met Justin Bieber on the TODAY show on November 4, 2012 but I…

One Directioner Niall Horan’s Half-Eaten Toast Sells For $100K

From Bieber’s lovely locks to ScarJo’s used tissue, MTV News looks back at the most outrageous celebrity auctions so far. By John Mitchell One Direction’s Niall Horan Photo: Getty Images Wondering just how big One Direction madness has gotten? Well, a half-eaten piece of toast left by the British boy band’s Niall Horan on an Australian talk show has attracted almost $100,000 in online bids. That’s Justin Bieber big, y’all! Digital Spy reports the toast was put up for auction on eBay by the Australian broadcaster behind the morning program “Sunrise.” The One Direction guys visited the show yesterday and were asked to try some traditional Down Under cuisine, including the country’s famous Vegemite spread. Horan was not a big fan and did not finish his toast, so the broadcaster decided to let the leftovers benefit the Australian charity Youngcare. Bidding opened at $0.99, though a quick succession of bids saw the price of the — we repeat — half-eaten piece of toast rise to $1,000. Within a few hours the price had risen to $15,000, which is when a serious shopper stepped into the mix, putting forth a $50,000 bid. The same bidder continued to make outrageous offers on the toast as other astute 1D fans got in the game, first bidding $80,000, then $85,000, $90,000 and eventually $99,999. That price was matched, meaning that even if the bidder who drove the price up so high was a fraud, there is another person out there willing to pay nearly $100,000 for a piece of half-eaten toast. Curiously, this is not the first time people have gotten all worked up on eBay over curious celeb castoffs. In other toast-related news, during the heyday of ‘NSYNC, a Z-100 DJ auctioned off a piece of French toast that Justin Timberlake took one bite of for a reported $3,154. The toast was purchased by a 19-year-old fan, who reportedly said that she would “probably freeze-dry it, then seal it … then put it on my dresser.” Yep. Justin Bieber gave Ellen DeGeneres a lock of his hair during an appearance on her talk show last year and she decided to put the hair up for auction to benefit the Gentle Barn Foundation, a California-based animal rights organization. Bieber’s luscious locks drew 98 bids and collected $40,688 for the charity. That’s about the cost of tuition at Amherst College. Though it brought in much less cash, a tissue used by Scarlett Johansson on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” still managed to bring in $5,300 for the charity, USA Harvest and online casino GoldenPalace paid $530 for, ahem, “A jar containing air exhaled by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.” Oh, and for “one piece of gum chewed and spat out by the pop princess.” The princess: Britney Spears. The year: 2004. We call dibs on the half-drank bottle of water left by whichever Jonas Brother stops through next. How much would you pay for Niall Horan’s half-eaten toast?
