On Monday (April 23), we opened first-round voting in our interactive bracket competition, where 32 bands, spanning all generations, will face off. The fans determine who’ll continue, who gets eliminated and, eventually who earns the title of Greatest Boy Band of All Time . So start voting now to make sure your favorite group advances to round two and beyond. And the bands aren’t just going to stand by while you vote — they’re already campaigning for your support as the the Wanted did in their hilarious video . Voting in round one closes on Thursday at noon ET. The tourney is sure to heat up before the winner is announced on May 7. All right, it’s time to reveal our list of the 32 competing boy bands. Read on as we break down a few key matchups in the first round of competition and sound off on our list on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB! Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands interactive bracket! Midwest Backstreet Boys vs. Westlife : This will likely be an interesting first-round matchup since these two bands have one thing in particular on their side: longevity. Both groups have been around since the late 1990s, and while Westlife called it quits in 2011, the Backstreet Boys are still going strong, currently on a European tour with fellow boy-banders and tournament finalists, New Kids on the Block. Of course, BSB had worldwide success. Their 1999 album, Millennium, sold more 1 million copies in its first week. And Westlife, originally signed by Simon Cowell, had a hit song in the U.S, “Swear It Again,” and ruled the U.K. charts with 14 #1 singles. Here’s a fun fact: Westlife’s first big break came in 1998 when they opened for the Backstreet Boys at a concert in Dublin. Additional Matchups : O-Town vs. the Jackson 5 98 Degrees vs. the Beatles New Kids on the Block vs. Take That East ‘NSYNC vs. 5ive : Yes, both of these groups consisted of five members, but they actually have more in common than that. In 1998, 5ive embarked on a U.S tour with ‘NSYNC, but soon after, left the tour due to exhaustion. Interestingly, both bands notably decided to call it quits at the peak time of their success. In 2001, 5ive had just released their third album when the lead single, “Let’s Dance,” became their third #1 in the U.K. They soon announced they were calling it a day. Similarly, in 2002, after ‘NSYNC’s second album, No Strings Attached became the best-selling album of the decade, the group released Celebrity, which gave the group three #1 singles. After a tour in support of their third album, they decided to go on a permanent break. Additional Matchups : LFO vs. 112 Jonas Brothers vs. Menudo Hanson vs. BBMak West The Wanted vs. Color Me Badd : It’s not only old versus new in this matchup, it’s pop versus R&B. British boy band the Wanted have had much success overseas and recently found fame Stateside with their hit single “Glad You Came.” The group’s first U.S. EP hits stores on Tuesday and they just released their next track, “Chasing the Sun.” But don’t count out Color Me Badd: Much like The Wanted, this group had success early on in their career. From 1991 to 1992, the group had five hit singles off their debut album, including the smash hit “I Wanna Sex You Up.” Additional Matchups : The Monkees vs. 2gether Big Time Rush vs. All-4-One Boyz II Men vs. Jodeci South One Direction vs. Day 26 : This could be an exciting matchup since the two bands were assembled by two of the most influential minds in music: Simon Cowell and Diddy. British boy band One Direction got their start on the U.K. version of the “X Factor” and quickly took off from there. In March, their debut album, Up All Night, debuted at #1, the first time a U.K. group did so with a debut album . Day 26 also got their start on a television show, MTV’s “Making the Band 4.” In 2008, one year after their formation, the group released their self-titled album on Diddy’s Bad Boy records; it debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart. Additional Matchups : IM5 vs. B2K NKOTBSB vs. New Edition Another Bad Creation vs. Mindless Behavior Voting is under way in round one of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands and closes at noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan ballots, so if your favorite band made the cut, keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits daily for boy-band video takeovers. ‘Total Recall’ Remake Heads In ‘A Different Direction’ From Original

Director Len Wiseman tells MTV News about Kate Beckinsale going bad and Bryan Cranston’s complex villain. By Kara Warner Colin Farrell in “Total Recall” Photo: Sony Pictures We still have a while to wait for the August 3 release of the new “Total Recall,” but now that we’ve seen and obsessed over the official full-length trailer , we have a better idea of what to expect from Len Wiseman’s re-telling of the classic Philip K. Dick story, as well as how it compares to the 1990 cult favorite starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Paul Verhoeven. In addition to providing MTV News with his expert commentary about the well-received trailer , Wiseman also gave us some in-depth insight into how he’s handled the precedents and expectations set by Verhoeven’s film, how closely the 2012 film sticks to Dick’s original story, as well as what fans can appreciate and expect from stars Colin Farrell and a villainous Kate Beckinsale . MTV : How much fun has incorporating all the new technology been? Wiseman : It’s great. And, I will be honest: It’s a blessing and a curse for me, because I’m so of a school of practical effects and practical stunts. And when you develop a movie like this, which is an entire world you’re creating, you can only build so much, and then you go into your effects world. And actually, there’s a lot of practical elements in here that people assume are CG, because CG is used so often. In the trailer, we did this really complicated shot of Colin doing a fight sequence shootout. The camera is spinning around, it’s 100 percent practical. And it’s funny when I really kicked the “how much time and how expensive” nightmare kind of math in to figure that all out and everything to put in, and what surprised me is a lot of people think that is CG. I think because you maybe don’t immediately process how that’s being done. But it’s funny, because I look at that and go, “That’s actually the shot that’s entirely 100 percent practical.” So I really do find it a blessing and a curse, because I started as a prop guy. I actually started building models initially and then went into the prop department, and I’m so much of a practical mind. But then you get into a point where, “OK, now we have to build a world that is 100 and some odd years in the future.” And your construction budget, that’s a surprise. MTV : How will fans be impressed by Colin’s performance? Wiseman : I think they’re absolutely going to love him. It’s a very different take on the character. It’s much more of the internal struggle that he’s faced with, and he did such a great job with this mystery of his own soul, really. It’s such a mystery, this film. It’s got the action and sci-fi, everything hovering on the perimeter of what makes it feel like a big action film. But in its core, it’s a mystery, and it’s a mystery of himself. And I just think people will be really captivated by following his journey. He really does allow you to be him. So I really think they’ll be excited by him. MTV : What about seeing Kate Beckinsale playing a villain? Wiseman : It’s fun for us as well. She’s never done anything like that. So to be able to have some fun with playing a villain — and she had fun doing it too, because she’s always like, “You have to be so earnest when you’re saving the world. Wow, you can actually just loosen up and just, the bad guys have more fun.” I would love to get, I’ll probably put this out on the DVD, but these girls are just kicking each other’s asses and really brutal. We wanted to attack it. It was just a really vicious brawl, and in between the cuts, they both get so girly. Right on “cut.” There’s plenty of times when Kate actually just nicked Jessica [Biel]’s nose or same thing with Jessica, and they immediately just go from these vicious badass lethal killers to immediately very apologetic and very polite and girly. It’s great to see. MTV : Will we see Mars? Wiseman : We won’t see Mars. And I got to say, it’s one of the things that attracted me to the script, because I really, I along with a lot of other people, I really loved the Verhoeven film. I was very skeptical on just the reboot, just the idea. And until I read the script, with a lot of speculation going, it takes it in such a different direction from that film. Because it didn’t go to Mars, funny enough, is why I was interested. And it’s also just like I said: It plays a little bit into the threat of what the Philip K. Dick story had of, much more of bringing the threat back, really Doug’s mission to save Earth, not Mars. MTV : What can you tell us about getting Bryan Cranston? Wiseman : He’s got one really fun personality. I think a lot of people, if you’ve seen him in his prior TV show, I’m sure, I happened to be introduced to him through films and then “Breaking Bad” as well. I’ve never seen “Malcolm in the Middle,” and I was taken by how fun and charming and funny the guy is. I probably came late to that game. That’s no surprise to anyone else. He really has a balance of evil and charming, which I really like. He plays off great [with Colin]. I wish they actually had more scenes together. It’s a bit of a weird structure, where the villain is kind of split between Kate and Cranston. So when they’re together, though, it’s great. He’s really got a good balance there, where when there’s a pure tendency that a lot of people have to play just very villainous, he has a little bit more passion for what he’s doing, where you actually believe it is the right thing, rather than twirling your mustache a bit too much. More One Direction Name Suggestions: Direction 2.0, It’s Complicated

Following the lawsuit from a same-named band, your Twitter suggestions for a new name keep pouring in! By Gil Kaufman One Direction Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images It could be weeks, or months, before we find out what will happen with the $1 million lawsuit
against red-hot British boy band One Direction over their name. An unsigned American group who claims to have had the same name for several years has filed the suit seeking an injunction, so on Wednesday we set up the hashtag #New1DName and asked you to offer your suggestions for a new 1D moniker. In a statement obtained by MTV News, Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment responded to the suit, indicating that 1D fans have nothing to worry about. “There is a dispute with a local group in California about the ownership of the One Direction name in the US.,” read the statement. “One Direction’s management tried to resolve the situation amicably when the matter first came to light, but the Californian group has now filed a lawsuit claiming they own the name. One Direction’s lawyers now have no choice but to defend the lawsuit and the band’s right to use their name.” And while plenty of you took the same stance as 1D’s reps and said the band shouldn’t and wouldn’t budge, way more of you came up with some creative, silly and sometimes unprintable suggestions. Many of you played the numbers game: 5 Directions (@rachy__g), 5BoysStillBelieving and 5 Boys With a Dream (@AudrieLeung143), 1Dream (@My1Defulboys), The Perfect 5 (@1DSmile4ever), 5 UK White Boys (@DrunkHaymitchPN), 1Derful (@My1Defulboys), 5 Heart-Throbs (@1DSmile4ever) and 1Dful 5 (@idancewith2phit). Others went the (slightly) naughty, or cheeky route: Wander Action (pronounced quickly as “wonderaction”) (@clairebear0011), One Erection (@ThreeDirectionz), Let’s Make Simon Cowell Even Richer (@jj_watching), The Panty Parade (@DrunkHaymitchPN), Niall and the Leprecauns and Harry and the Pussy Cats (@MarisaDelynne), Genericteenboyband123 (@tdreeves), The Curly Girlies (@AshleighKathy) and 4 Brits and an Irish (@krystenwaddell). (And those are just the ones we could print!) There were plenty more variations on the original name: The Right Direction (@LatifaML), One Dimension (@KayleeMcNally), Direction 2.0 and UK Direction (@ThreeDirectionz), Forever Direction (@AudrieLeung143), Our Direction (@UniquelyJonas), The Sexy Direction (@ColiCristina_), UK One Direction (@Lisah961), On Direction (@AliceFxxx), One Detection (@its_nazzie), Fun Direction (@catocity), The Only Directions (@contAJAous), One End (@AliceFxxx), Route 1D (@jboogy259) and a slew of anagramatical head-scratchers from @fr0stypanda that included: Coin Oriented, Recited Onion, Cootie Dinner, Rice Noontide, Eco Rendition and Ironic Denote. And some of you just went for the cute, or the confusing: The Dark Side of Nothing and It’s Complicated (@kenziecrooks53), Cutest Boyiz Eva (@amaff8), Perfection (@1d_caryl1029), Zappers (@VasZAPpening), Larry and the Jets (@MNneeds1D), The Raveeners (@LuvBieberand1D), GPS Boys (@DrunkHaymitchPN), The Young Wild and Free and Paul and the Gummy Bears (@ThreeDirectionz) and Paul’s Piglets (@AshleighKathy). One Directioner Niall Horan’s Half-Eaten Toast Sells For $100K

From Bieber’s lovely locks to ScarJo’s used tissue, MTV News looks back at the most outrageous celebrity auctions so far. By John Mitchell One Direction’s Niall Horan Photo: Getty Images Wondering just how big One Direction madness has gotten? Well, a half-eaten piece of toast left by the British boy band’s Niall Horan on an Australian talk show has attracted almost $100,000 in online bids. That’s Justin Bieber big, y’all! Digital Spy reports the toast was put up for auction on eBay by the Australian broadcaster behind the morning program “Sunrise.” The One Direction guys visited the show yesterday and were asked to try some traditional Down Under cuisine, including the country’s famous Vegemite spread. Horan was not a big fan and did not finish his toast, so the broadcaster decided to let the leftovers benefit the Australian charity Youngcare. Bidding opened at $0.99, though a quick succession of bids saw the price of the — we repeat — half-eaten piece of toast rise to $1,000. Within a few hours the price had risen to $15,000, which is when a serious shopper stepped into the mix, putting forth a $50,000 bid. The same bidder continued to make outrageous offers on the toast as other astute 1D fans got in the game, first bidding $80,000, then $85,000, $90,000 and eventually $99,999. That price was matched, meaning that even if the bidder who drove the price up so high was a fraud, there is another person out there willing to pay nearly $100,000 for a piece of half-eaten toast. Curiously, this is not the first time people have gotten all worked up on eBay over curious celeb castoffs. In other toast-related news, during the heyday of ‘NSYNC, a Z-100 DJ auctioned off a piece of French toast that Justin Timberlake took one bite of for a reported $3,154. The toast was purchased by a 19-year-old fan, who reportedly said that she would “probably freeze-dry it, then seal it … then put it on my dresser.” Yep. Justin Bieber gave Ellen DeGeneres a lock of his hair during an appearance on her talk show last year and she decided to put the hair up for auction to benefit the Gentle Barn Foundation, a California-based animal rights organization. Bieber’s luscious locks drew 98 bids and collected $40,688 for the charity. That’s about the cost of tuition at Amherst College. Though it brought in much less cash, a tissue used by Scarlett Johansson on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” still managed to bring in $5,300 for the charity, USA Harvest and online casino GoldenPalace paid $530 for, ahem, “A jar containing air exhaled by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.” Oh, and for “one piece of gum chewed and spat out by the pop princess.” The princess: Britney Spears. The year: 2004. We call dibs on the half-drank bottle of water left by whichever Jonas Brother stops through next. How much would you pay for Niall Horan’s half-eaten toast? Should Taylor Swift And One Direction’s Harry Styles Date?

Fans had very strong reactions when MTV News reported about the rumored couple. By Katie Byrne Taylor Swift Photo: Getty Images Are Taylor Swift and One Direction ‘s Harry Styles a couple? They’re not talking — but you certainly are. On Wednesday, we posted some compelling evidence that Swift and Styles might be linked up (Exhibit A: This video , in which 1D rib their bandmate about Taylor during an MTV News interview), and fans certainly had their opinions on the potential pair. Many readers chalked it up to one more dude caught in the Taylor Swift rumor mill. “I think it’s time to stop the Taylor Swift likes whoever nonsense,” BrianC6234 wrote in the MTV News comments section. “First of all, why does it matter? But even if you care, these rumors have all been false. Isn’t she dating that guy from ‘Les Miserables’? I mean Zac Efron. Wait, no, it’s Tim Tebow. Get the point?” “These rumors have always been wrong,” WeeRu chimed in. “Chord Overstreet, that guy from Parachute, Zac Efron and now Harry Styles? I don’t think so.” RachV2389 added: “Guy after guy. Well … she hasn’t had a song about a British boy yet!” A lot of Taylor fans out there are hopeless romantics, just like their idol, and have their fingers crossed that the One Direction heartthrob is “The One” for Swift. “Harry is a good guy,” xLara_Stylesx wrote. “If you watch all his videos you will see that he has a good personality. And Taylor deserves a boyfriend like him (:” “I love them both,” mrs.worldwide said. “It would be nice if they were together.” (BTW, should we get started on the joint nickname? We’re thinking Haylor or Swiftles.) But it wasn’t all roses and sunshine: Some short-and-not-so-sweet reactions to the news included “SWEET BABY JESUS NO” and “no, please no!” “Heeeck no,” Stephanie Lynn Roberts posted on MTV News’ Facebook page. “Harry has class. TSwift would just break up with him to get a new hit song.” Some fans pointed out the age difference between the 18-year-old boy bander and 22-year-old country superstar. “Come on, Taylor, the kid is only 18,” Ariela M. Garcia wrote, which prompted Facebook user Holly McQuithey to point out Styles’ 32-year-old ex. “Harry dated Caroline Flack. There is no age limit for that boy. Let him be happy.” But one reader, MinkenGjerald, really made us laugh with their reason the couple will never work: “Well… no.. Harry is a sex bomb and Taylor is so innocent.” What do you think? One Direction Offer A Lesson In British Slang

In preparation for U.S. tour, fans might want to learn ‘bird’ and ‘sithee.’ By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images One Direction will soon be embarking on their first-ever U.S. headlining tour . The British imports will take their mop-top, sunny pop tunes all across our great land. Before they hit the road, MTV News caught up with the fivesome in New York City, where they performed on “Saturday Night Live.” The guys revealed some key British slang terms American girls might want to learn to impress them. To get you in-the-know before your next One Direction concert, the guys broke down key phrases to use in conversation: “Trousers” are pants, per the guys, and a “jumper” is a sweater, and therefore possibly a good thing to wear with trousers. Louis Tomlinson said “fit” is a key word to describe an attractive person, explaining, “If a girl’s fit, she’s hot.” One Directioners might use “fit” to describe the “blokes” in 1D: “He’s a nice bloke,” Liam Payne said of the term for a guy. On the other end of the spectrum, Harry Styles let us in on a word for a special lady and romantic interest. “Quite slangy,” Harry explained, “but if someone was your girlfriend, you’d be like, ‘That’s my bird.’ ” And, finally, “sithee” means “see ya” or “goodbye.” That will be perhaps the hardest thing a Directioner will say to one of the guys if they should meet them during their outing this year. The tour will kick off May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way including Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. They are also set to take the stage at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden on December 3. The guys’ debut album, Up All Night , which features their lead single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” is out now. Share your favorite British slang in the comments below! One Direction Prove Themselves During ‘SNL’ Debut

The boys also show off acting chops during ‘Manuel Ortiz Show’ sketch. By James Dinh One Direction performs on SNL Photo: NBC It’s usually the more seasoned artists that take to the “Saturday Night Live” stage as musical guests, but this season of the late-night NBC show has welcomed newer acts to provide entertainment mid-laughs. Back in January, Lana Del Rey raised eyebrows for delivering a pair of performances that didn’t sit right with critics. And on Saturday night, it was One Direction, who continued their Stateside domination with some smooth performances on the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode of “SNL.” Beginning with their mega-smash “What Makes You Beautiful,” One Direction worked each side of the Studio 8H stage. Dressed in blazers, vests and cardigans, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan crooned the feel-good track while showing off their boyish charm. When the boys reappeared later on for a performance of their song “One Thing,” they came with a bit more playfulness. As one of the groups behind the recent boy-band resurgence, the guys proved they have more than enough talent, teenage allure and overall packaging to keep them on the charts. 1D also got into the acting action when they made a brief appearance on “The Manuel Ortiz Show” skit. With the help of some wigs and mustaches, the British pop band acted as Spanish children of a rather dysfunctional family. And like all guests on Manuel’s show, the singers strutted onto the stage doing the skit’s signature dance. One Directioners got a double-dose of acting from the boys when they made their national television acting debut on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” earlier in the evening. MTV News recently caught up with some of the show’s actors, who had nothing but positive things to say about the British music sensations. While iCarly herself, Miranda Cosgrove, found the bandmates “really funny,” another castmate, Nathan Krauss, admitted his initial uncertainty in regards to their acting chops. “Having One Direction on set was really cool. We didn’t really know what to expect from them, because we had heard that they didn’t really have any acting experience because they have a lot of lines and are almost in every scene,” the actor explains. “But we were all very pleasantly surprised. They did very, very well, especially Harry, because he had to pretend to be sick the whole time.” What did you think of One Direction’s “SNL” set? Tell us below! The Wanted Tease Guest MC, Video For ‘Chasing The Sun’

‘There’s an American rapper, potentially, and he’s very good and I can’t mention who he is,’ Tom Parker hints to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino The Wanted Photo: MTV News The Wanted dropped their swagged-out party track “Chasing the Sun” this week, and despite any literal interpretations one might expect from a video for a song with that title, the guys say they want to go a bit more fun and less obvious. “We’re gonna be flying through space, literally, running after the sun the whole three minutes,” Nathan Sykes joked to MTV News after they stepped off the “American Idol” stage Thursday night. But bandmate Jay McGuiness quickly clarified that’s not the case at all. “We saw a lot of treatments and a lot of them took it literally, somewhere chasing the sun,” he said. “But we decided we weren’t into that. We worked with a director called Director X, so we know it’s going to be a good party. But we’ll leave the details until we release it.” Director X has already hooked up with the guys on two of their videos, the sun-drenched “Glad You Came” and the darker clip for “Warzone.” “Chasing the Sun” is the lead single from the Wanted’s forthcoming U.S. debut , set for release later this month, and Max George is counting down the days until it drops. “We’ve got an EP coming out in the 24th of April that’s all ready to go. I wish it was out now, really,” he said. “We’re really excited for it to come out. Hopefully all our fans will love the other songs. We’ve got some singles we’ve done in the U.K. We’ve got some new songs we’ve written. I think they’ll like it, I hope.” And while the album is done, Tom Parker noted there could be a last-minute guest on it. “For ‘Chasing the Sun’ there’s an American rapper, potentially, and he’s very good and I can’t mention who he is,” he teased. The guys added he’s someone who loves cats but noted it’s not Cee Lo Green, who frequently chills with his cat Purrfect on “The Voice.” Sykes said the rapper would appear on “just the single version; the full version of the track will be on the EP. Potentially the single version is with this unnamed rapper. He’s very talented.” What is your favorite song by the Wanted? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The Wanted
