And Another One… ‘Think Like A Man’ Sequel In The Works

“Think Like A Man” Sequel Planned One of our favorite movies this year is getting a sequel! It’s hardly been a secret that Sony Screen Gems has wanted to get going on a sequel to “Think Like a Man.” The studio finally made it official today, saying it’s moving ahead with a second film, hiring Keith Merryman and David A. Newman to write the script. The writing team, who also wrote “Friends With Benefits,” penned the original “Man” film. Produced by Will Packer, “Think Like a Man” was a groundbreaking African American ensemble comedy, grossing more than $91 million in the U.S. after its theatrical opening in April. That made it one of the year’s most profitable comedies, as it only cost a rock-bottom $12 million. Almost as importantly, “Think Like a Man” just squeezed past Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes to Jail,” which earned $90.5 million, giving the Screen Gems film some serious bragging rights in terms of box-office triumphs in the black comedy field. Screen Gems isn’t saying whether Kevin Hart will be back in the sequel, though it’s almost impossible to imagine the film going forward without him, especially because he stole virtually every scene he had in the film, which costarred a host of gifted African American actors, including Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union and Terrence Jenkins. Hart won’t come cheap this time around, as he’s been fielding offers from several studios eager to put him into an action-comedy. The studio also was mum about whether Tim Story, the original film’s director, would be on board for the sequel. Story, who had his first success with “Barbershop,” has also become a hot commodity with studios who are eager to get him into the director’s chair for various potential comedy projects. Hart has already signed on for another Screen Gems film, a remake of the 1986 film “About Last Night,” that itself was a re-interpretation of the David Mamet play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago.” I have to admit that it seems odd that Screen Gems is going forward with both projects, as they are both clearly comedies about a group of friends with romantic entanglements. This being Hollywood, where black stereotypes die hard, it remains to be seen whether “About Last Night” will be a remake with an all African American cast, or whether Hart, who is reprising the Jim Belushi part from the original film, will simply play the role of a white couple’s very funny black friend. Neither the sequel to “Think Like a Man” or the remake of “About Last Night” has a firm release date yet. We can’t wait! Did y’all see “Think Like A Man”? What would you want to see happen in a sequel? Who would you like to see in the cast? Source

It’s the bear. Wahlberg stars in the comedy as a Boston slacker whose BFF, Ted — a stuffed animal come alive thanks to a childhood wish — is an irresponsible, wise-cracking stoner. (Not to mention a ladies’ man — or, bear. Whatever.) TMZ reports that the CG-created Ted has become a “sex symbol” for plushophiles , or plushies, who comprise a subcategory within the furry community: ” Ted creator Seth MacFarlane has already been contacted by a XXX website that’s popular with Plushies, Clips4Sale.com, in the hopes they can acquire the rights to use Ted’s image and make him the site’s new mascot. The site fired off a letter to Seth saying, ‘Not since Alf has there been this kind of excitement over a stuffed animal.'” So, uh, eat your heart out, Channing Tatum? [ TMZ ]

‘Transformers 4’ Will Feature ‘New Cast,’ Space Setting

Director Michael Bay speaks out on his plans for his fourth and final round with the robots in disguise. By Josh Wigler “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: When “Transformers” revs up for its fourth big-screen adventure, you’ll see plenty of familiar faces along for the ride: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee. … But there won’t be a single human character from the old guard. Unless, of course, you count director Michael Bay. “It’s a new cast,” the director matter-of-factly told the Los Angeles Times about his plans for “Transformers 4,” which will not feature Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky at all. “We’re moving on to something different.” “It’s not a reboot, that’s maybe the wrong word,” Bay added. “I don’t want to say reboot because then people will think we’re doing a Spider-Man and starting from the beginning. We’re not. We’re taking the story that you’ve seen &8212; the story we’ve told in three movies already &8212; and we’re taking it in a new direction. But we’re leaving those three as the history. It all still counts. I met with the writer before I went off to do ‘Pain and Gain’ and we talked about a bunch of ideas. We let that simmer for a bit. He’s been thinking about stuff and now we’re getting back together next week to see what we’ve got and to see if it gels.” One of the new ideas that Bay has cooked up: the possibility of bringing the Autobots and Decepticons to outer space. “I think so, yeah, a little,” he said when asked if the fourth film would go off-planet. “That feels like the way to go, doesn’t it? I want to go a little off, but I don’t want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded. That’s what works in these movies, that’s what makes it accessible.” Bay said that “Transformers 4,” which will have a smaller budget than its predecessors by “about $30 million,” will be his final ride with Prime and pals. He’s said as much in the past, of course — but this time, Bay insists that he means business. “Here’s the thing, it’s tough to find someone who’s done these kind of movies and to have the complication of creating the new stuff that needs to be in this movie — not just characters but a new type of action, I hope — and that’s a lot for someone new to bite off,” said the director. “And so after this one I will leave it in the best hands possible. That’s the plan.” Tell us what you think of Bay’s “Transformers” plans in the comments below! First Image from Disney’s Maleficent: Witchy Angelina Jolie and Her Killer Cheekbones

Cower in fear (and admiration) for the villainous Angelina Jolie ! Releasing a first look at their upcoming Maleficent , Disney announced today that production is underway on the Jolie-toplined adaptation centered on Sleeping Beauty ‘s evil witch, which “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.” Just look at those cheekbones. Scary! The retconned fairytale (in theaters in 2014) brings the witch Maleficent front and center, with innocent young Elle Fanning playing Princess Aurora. Fanning and Jolie are joined by a solid line-up: Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, and Lesley Manville round out the cast, while Disney Renaissance legend Don Hahn is among the executive producers. Once upon a time, Tim Burton and Darren Aronofsky’s names were bandied about to helm the picture, but visual effects vet Robert Stromberg landed in the director’s chair, marking his directorial debut. Meanwhile, Maleficent ‘s script is written by Linda Woolverton ( Beauty and the Beast , The Lion King ) and they’ve got Rick Baker onboard for make-up, all of which is promising enough for me…for now. Maleficent is set for release (in 3-D) on March 14, 2014.

Steve Carell Challenges Channing Tatum To An Ab-Off

Carell jokes to MTV News about his co-star in Bennett Miller’s ‘Foxcatcher’: ‘He doesn’t threaten me. Come on!’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Steve Carell Photo: Channing Tatum , the challenge has been made. When MTV News spoke with Steve Carell during a press day for his new film, ” Seeking a Friend for the End of the World ,” he filled us in on the status of his upcoming project, Bennett Miller ‘s ” Foxcatcher .” “I am beginning shooting on that in October. I don’t know when they’re going to release it,” Carell said. “I’ve signed on to do it. I’m excited. It’s a good script.” Miller, the director of “Moneyball,” will helm a cast that includes Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Tatum. “Foxcatcher” tells the true-life story of John duPont, millionaire and member of the famous family. DuPont established a wrestling training site for Olympians, and one day murdered gold medalist David Schultz (Tatum). The project is certainly high profile, considering both the A-list cast and the awards success Miller had last year with “Moneyball” and his first feature, “Capote.” Carell seemed genuinely excited about the start of production, but when the discussion turned to a potential abdominal comparison between him and Tatum, things got deathly serious and seriously funny. Asked if he was getting in shape, Carell replied: “No need. We could have a pose-off right now, and I would just win hands down — no competition there.” Not letting the topic end there, he joked of Tatum, “He doesn’t threaten me. Come on!” “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” opens in theaters June 22. ‘Catching Fire’ In IMAX: Time To Embrace The Big, Big Screen?

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we wonder if the new format is really worth the five extra bucks. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: We interrupt your regularly scheduled Finnick speculation to bring you this special announcement: “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will light up IMAX theaters come November 2013! (OK, the news broke Wednesday, but I don’t write my column until Thursday.) Anyway, this is big (as in 70 feet tall) news … if you like that sort of thing. While “The Hunger Games” was re-mastered for IMAX screens, director Francis Lawrence intends to shoot entire “Catching Fire” sequences in the larger-than-life format. As my colleague Kevin P. Sullivan noted , this will be only the sixth major studio film to be partially shot in IMAX — news to which my reaction was roughly, “Okie doke…” See, I’ve never really understood the appeal of IMAX. Isn’t it just for people with poor eyesight who need to see things really large? And why should I pay roughly five extra bucks for the privilege? I have good vision! To wit, I’ve never purposely sought out an IMAX screening. One time on vacation in Seattle my friend insisted we see “The Lion King” (nearly a decade after its initial release) in IMAX, and since I didn’t want to be a chump, I went along. I’ve probably been to one IMAX movie since (it wasn’t “Avatar,” by the way, my hometown theater is lame), but I can’t help but wonder if I’m missing something. According to conventional wisdom and my previously mentioned colleague Kevin (who graciously humored my IMAX questions and concerns), the format is considered the height of immersive movie-going technology. (So much more worth the price than 3-D, he says.) Everything’s huge! Everything’s so detailed! Everything else in the theater just disappears! It’s like that guy in the front row wearing the bowler hat festooned with Christmas lights doesn’t exist! Fine, fine. I get it. And I’m willing to give it another try because Katniss and Peeta deserve as much. (It will also give me another ready-made column idea come next Thanksgiving!) And with speculation swirling that the IMAX-friendly filming will likely focus on the nifty new Quarter Quell arena, I’m simultaneously thrilled and sick to my stomach over the idea of being completely immersed in the bloody battle. Nonetheless, let the IMAX Games begin! “Catching Fire” hits theaters November 22, 2013. Are you excited to see “Catching Fire” in IMAX? Or is it much ado about nothing?
