Good Idea/Bad Idea? Dimension and Miramax Making Another Amityville Horror

Horror remakes and sequels are a dime a dozen, but low-budget flicks like Paranormal Activity have boosted interest in making yet more moneymakers, no matter how redundant they sound on paper. Enter The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes , a new “found footage” sequel to the classic horror pic that will shoot this summer for a January 2012 release. What say you, Movieliners? Will this familiar concept be drawn thin or reinvigorated by the whole “found footage” shtick?

Is Spielberg’s Fox Series Terra Nova the Perfect Jurassic Park/Lost Hybrid?

The trailer for Steven Spielberg’s new Fox sci-fi serial Terra Nova , where groups of people travel to prehistoric times to save the overcrowded Earth of 2149, is filled with touches of the director’s old favorites: Jurassic Park ‘s wonderment creeps up, E.T ‘s innocence plays a part, and maybe a touch of the non-Spielbergian Lost sneaks in as well. Check the trailer after the jump.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Hits The Net

The clip, set to premiere tonight on E!, leaked early … and, as Gaga put it, it’s ‘a celebration of faith.’ By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Well, it’s here … eight hours ahead of schedule. On Thursday morning (May 5), Lady Gaga’s hotly anticipated “Judas” video premiered, though probably not in the way that Mother Monster (and the folks at E!) had hoped it would: It leaked. Originally set to be unveiled on the network during prime time on Thursday (and then again at 11:30 p.m.), “Judas” got a bit of an advance screening, quickly making the rounds on the Internet while the Little Monsters squealed with delight (or, alternately, expressed their outrage at its leaking). And despite pretty much everything Gaga had said about the video — that it was “a motorcycle Fellini film,” that it portrayed “a betrayal of a prophecy fulfilled” — it is very much a pure pop clip, albeit one that looks great and is sure to earn the ire of a few folks on the religious right. An arty reimagining of the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot, the video sees Gaga as Mary Magdalene, riding along with Christ and his apostles, who are decked out in studded leathers and set atop roaring motorcycles. They cruise through — as Gaga put it — “a modern-day Jerusalem,” with Judas tellingly racing ahead of the pack. At one point, they stop at an “Electric Chapel,” where Gaga attempts to warn Christ — who, with his cornrows and golden crown of thorns, is far from traditional — of his apostle’s impending betrayal. Whether or not he chooses to listen is largely up to the viewer, as the clip then segues into an extended sequence rife with religious iconography … and, of course, dance. And though it remains to be seen if the highly touted “uncut” version of “Judas” — which will still premiere tonight on E! at 7 p.m. ET — contains more controversial material, it’s difficult to see why some people would have a problem with the video: Sure, Jesus looks different, and Gaga is playing Magdalene (certainly one of the most controversial figures in the Bible), but its imagery isn’t nearly as sacred/profane as that of the “Alejandro” clip (Gaga does not, to the best of our knowledge, ingest rosary beads here), and in fact, with its artistic interpretations of foot washing and Boticelli’s “The Birth of Venus,” it’s almost more of a tribute to the pop sensation’s Catholic upbringing … a fact she hit on when she said the video “[is] meant more to celebrate faith than it is to challenge it.” Leave it to Gaga to push the boundaries while remaining faithful to the source material. “Judas” is, at its sacred heart, an artistic explosion contained within the confines of a traditional pop clip. And if it’s meant to be a celebration, well, you should probably start celebrating … before the clip gets pulled, of course. Have you seen Gaga’s leaked “Judas” video and, if so, what do you think? Jennifer Lopez Calls Lil Wayne ‘An Interesting Artist’

J.Lo’s video for her track ‘I’m Into You,’ featuring the MC, premieres on Thursday on BET’s ‘106 & Park.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News Jennifer Lopez certainly isn’t a newbie when it comes to hip-hop collaborations (Diddy, Fat Joe, Ja Rule), so when it came time to find the perfect guy to get on her track “I’m Into You,” she knew that Lil Wayne was the MC with whom she had to work. “He really is unique. He’s so not what you would think or what you would think him to be,” she explained to MTV News. “Like when I got on the phone with him to talk about the record, I thought he was going to be like, ‘Hey, what’s up, J.Lo?’ and instead he was like, ‘Yes, ma’am.’

End Of Days: Tornado Shuts Down St. Louis Airport

Another local weather emergency makes national headlines. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado struck the airport, and it was conducting a survey of other possible tornadoes, forecaster Scott Truett told CNN. The region was receiving more rainfall Saturday. A tornado warning for the airport was issued at 7:36 p.m. Friday, about 35 minutes before the twister struck. Truett said “one parent thunderstorm” formed near Jefferson City, Missouri, on Friday and moved east toward St. Louis. The tornado that struck the airport may first have touched down in New Melle, about 30 miles to the west. About 30,000 homes in the county remained without power, and five shelters had been established. Major highways were open, but officials advised people to stay home. Searchers were going door to door in several communities. “We’re looking for the family that may be missing,” Earls told CNN. Inspections of buildings will take several days and hauling off debris will take longer. “We are doing a second door-to-door search right now,” said Bridgeton Police Chief Don Hood. So far, everyone has been accounted for and there were no reported injuries, he said. Many homes in the town were heavily damaged. Most of the city was without power and some roads were not passable, Hood told CNN. Airport officials were relieved that the severe storm Friday evening injured only a relative few passengers. Five people were taken to hospitals for minor injuries and about a dozen others were treated at the airport for cuts and scrapes after the storm struck around 8:15 p.m. Friday, said airport spokesman Jeff Lea. “It’s amazing given the number of people and the amount of damage,” he said. Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said one terminal was in good shape and the other also will be able to provide service Sunday. A few hundred passengers were stranded, but most stayed at hotels, she said. Concourse C in the main terminal, however, will take a while to repair and carriers will have to use other locations in the airport, she said. Concourse C is used by American Airlines, Frontier, AirTran and Cape Air. A van was left hanging precariously off the edge of a terminal parking garage. A video posted on YouTube showed strong winds pushing a Southwest Airlines plane away from a walkway and passengers moving quickly away from tall windows, dark clouds moving in. Passengers were hit with flying glass and debris as winds ripped off part of the roof in the airport’s C concourse, CNN affiliate KSDK said. “All the windows were busted. … The airport looks like a war zone,” Elizabeth Rastberger, 32, told CNN’s iReport. All this stuff can’t be coincidental, man. Source

‘Scream 4’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Wes Craven and stars, including Hayden Panettiere, on what to expect. By Eric Ditzian Neve Campbell in “Scream 4” Photo: Weinstein Co. Eleven years has passed since the previous installment in the “Scream” franchise. The teens that the Weinstein Company is hoping to entice to see the new sequel were probably more keen back in 2000 on watching SpongeBob SquarePants chillax in an underwater pineapple than Ghostface bloodily terrorize Woodsboro. Yet the challenge facing “Scream 4” is hardly unique in Hollywood. Nineteen years passed between “Indiana Jones” flicks, and “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” still raked in nearly $800 million worldwide in 2008. Will audiences still care about the ongoing tale of Sidney Prescott and a knife-wielding psycho? We have a feeling they will. MTV News certainly does, which is why we’ve been closely watching the production since word of the project first surfaced in 2008 and can now present our “Scream 4” cheat sheet: everything you need to know about the new horror flick. Sharpening the Knife News of the fourth film broke in July of ’08, and shortly after, MTV News revealed that Wes Craven , who helmed the previous trilogy, was in talks to return to the director’s chair. But guess what? Not just one new “Scream” was in the works, but an entire trilogy — again masterminded by Kevin Williamson . David Arquette and Courteney Cox were reportedly in talks to re-join the franchise, though early word suggested Neve Campbell had dropped out. Cox, it turned out, would eventually sign on. “The fourth one is an ensemble,” Williamson told us in November ’09. “It’ll take place right now, 10 years later, and it’s going to take place in Woodsboro. We’ll have our three main characters, and we’ll be introducing several more.” Craven officially signed on to direct in March 2010 and production kicked off early that spring. Joining the familiar faces were Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin and others. Returning to Woodsboro Eleven years after “Scream 3,” would the next installment have enough in store to both satisfy and surprise theatergoers? “For an audience that is so well-versed in ‘Scream’ [films] and in what happens and who becomes the killer, blah, blah, blah, it’s trickier to throw them a curveball,” Panettiere admitted . “I think they’ve done a really cool job with the script. We’ve had a blast on it.” The first footage for the film popped up in September, thanks to “Entertainment Tonight” — not that it revealed much of anything about the plot. But story details had already been emerging over the previous months. As Craven explained , the film would play off the idea of “sequelitis,” referring not only to the many “Scream” films but the fictional “Stab” flicks within the “Scream” mythology. “[Sidney] has been off by herself and living her own life, and she’s even written a book that has gotten a lot of critical acclaim,” he added. “She’s kind of put her life back together in the course of these 10 years. But, certainly, there would be no ‘Scream’ without Ghostface, so she has to confront him again, but now as a woman who has really come out the darkness of her past.” The trailer debuted in October. Culkin’s character stepped in to explain the new rules: the kill has to be more extreme (cue woman plummeting to her demise atop news truck), virgins aren’t safe (cut to Ghostface chasing scantily clad virgin around bedroom), and the killer should be filming his handiwork (see Cox discovering camcorder prior to run-in with Ghostface). A second trailer arrived in January, giving us more screams and more near-kills. The question, of course, remains … Who’s the Killer? No one in the cast will cop to the murders just yet. “My character is not the killer, because she knows horror movies too well,” Panettiere argued when we caught up with her recently. “She knows how they work, and she’s too terrified in that scene in the preview.” “My character is not the killer because she’s Sidney Prescott,” Campbell added. Said Aimee Teegarden, “Why am I not the killer? I’m not the killer because I have great hair in the movie. And if you have great hair, you don’t die — bottom line.” Whoever the killer ends up being, we have not seen the last of Ghostface. “Scream 4” is only the first flick in the new planned trilogy. So where does the franchise go from here? “It’s a process that I think all of us go through, trying to stay fresh and not repeating our last acts,” Craven told us . “What is next? What thoughts are in my mind that are original, thoughts that even surprise me, as opposed to looking up and going, ‘Oh, I guess I can do one of those. I guess I can make a zombie movie!’ We just need to keep it fresh and, in a sense, inspired. The thought that you can’t even intellectually sit down necessarily and come up with something, but then a thought comes and hits you in the middle of the shower — that’s your deepest subconscious creativity talking to you.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scream 4.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
