Plus: Director Joe Johnston talks to Entertainment Weekly about the politics of Captain America and ‘The Avengers.’ By Kara Warner Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Marvel Entertainment For all the “Captain America” fans who have been excited by the teaser trailer and magazine features , there have been just as many complaints about the fact that not much has yet been seen of the film’s chief and formidable villain, Red Skull. Luckily for those folks, Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first look at genre-film favorite Hugo Weaving all red and scary-looking. EW also scored a meaty interview with the film’s director, Joe Johnston, in which he addresses a wide range of subjects, including why a superhuman can be sympathetic, the politics of Captain America (played by Chris Evans) and how much he had to think about Joss Whedon’s spin-off film “The Avengers.” “What I like is he’s not a superhero in the true sense of the word,” Johnston explained of how Steve Rogers/ Captain America is unlike Superman or Spider-Man. “He becomes a superhero but doesn’t have any superpowers. He is just the best possible human specimen. Imagine the fastest, strongest Olympian athlete. Add 30 percent. That’s Steve Rogers.” Regarding the character’s historic and politically charged past (the first issue of the Marvel comic featured the now-famous cover image of Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw), Johnston said that although his film is indeed a period piece, it isn’t a “flag waver.” “He was created as a propaganda tool, but he soon became much more than that,” Johnston told the magazine. “There are all these incarnations over the decades, but the film is not a flag waver. It’s about a guy who wants to do the right thing. And that transcends all nationalities and borders.” Finally, there has been much ado over the fact that several characters who have and will have their own standalone films will come together for Whedon’s highly anticipated “Avengers” movie. “I really didn’t [think about it],” Johnston said. “Because this was a period film, because this was the origin story, I didn’t have to worry about ‘The Avengers,’ which was a present-day story,” he explained. “We have present-day bookends and bring Cap back at the end, and then I basically hand him off. And ‘The Avengers’ is its own thing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Can Legend of the Fist Live Up to This Awesome Trailer?

I usually avoid trailers for martial arts film altogether because, let’s face it, it’s not too hard to make even the worse film in this genre look mind-blowing and cool in an two-minute trailer. And while the fight choreography in Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zen indeed looks awesome, I was struck more by the chaotic opening war scene and the gorgeous period detail here, both of which set this one way ahead of the pack. At least as far as trailers go. Also, the director of Infernal Affairs , the original Hong Kong version of The Departed , is in charge here, so maybe we can expect a fun, convoluted narrative to compliment the action?

Kim Kardashian new haircut for braids

“Hype Williams came up with this Bo Derek braids look for the music video and I loved it!” wrote the 30-year-old star of the director’s hair inspiration. “It took about four hours to do, and believe it or not I fell asleep! I wish I could have worn it longer.” We don’t know what Kim Kardashian will sound like when her debut single drops, but at least we know she’ll look gorgeous in the song’s video. On her blog Tuesday, the reality-star-cum-singer revealed photos straight from her video shoot

My grandma makes the best cheesecake — cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday.” Justin also talks about his headline-making haircut a few days ago. Why did he do it? “I just wanted to, that’s all, not really a big reason; I just woke up and said, ‘I don’t want this anymore,’ so I just cut it,” he explained. “It’s not really about that. You know, the fans really liked it, but they’ll like me no matter what, because I think it’s about the music. I’m really excited to see what the fans overseas think and take it day by day.” With Bieber Fever at a fever pitch, Justin seems to take all this fame in stride, and he credits it to the people around him. “I have such great people around me, and such good family,” he says. “I just want to be a good role model to people, and to be able to just make good music. … I’m going to make mistakes, but it’s about learning from them and becoming better. … My movie shows that anything is possible and dreams do come true. … Remember to always stay humble and always be gracious and anything can happen.” ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ has made more than $50 million at the box office and this weekend Justin plans to deliver even more goodness to the true Beliebers out there: A revamped version of ‘Never Say Never: The Director’s Fan Cut’ in theaters with all-new footage! “It’s 40 minutes of extra footage, so it’s basically like a new movie,” he says. “Hopefully all the fans will go back and watch it.” Entertainment Tonight from Monday to Friday at 9.00 pm on BIG CBS PRIME. Christopher Nolan On ‘Dark Knight Rises’ As His Last Batman Film

‘We’re very much excited about really finishing a trilogy and giving a conclusion to our story,’ filmmaker says on Oscars red carpet. By Shawn Adler Christopher Nolan attends the 2011 Academy Awards Photo: Getty Images Over nearly 70 years as the World’s Greatest Detective, Batman has followed clues, pursued investigations and pounded out confessions from a diverse rogues’ gallery as tight-lipped and unresponsive as they come. But never mind the Joker or the Penguin: If the Dark Knight wanted a real challenge, he should try getting information from his director, Christopher Nolan. The ever-reserved Nolan was predictably and amusingly coy when asked about “The Dark Knight Rises” on the red carpet at the Academy Awards , where the 40-year-old was a double nominee in the categories of Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for “Inception.” We asked Nolan what the theme of “The Dark Knight Rises” would be, with fear such a major subtext in “Batman Begins” and escalation in “The Dark Knight.” “Wow that’s a tricky one. I actually don’t have an answer for you today,” Nolan smiled, having already finished the script for the film, which is set to begin shooting in a few months. “I’m gonna have to really think about that.” When asked about the casting choices of Thomas Hardy for Bane and Anne Hathaway for Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, Nolan replied, “Once you see the film in 2012, you will completely understand why they were the perfect choice for these characters.” On one note, however, Nolan was incredibly emphatic: This will be his last Batman film. “Yes,” he said when asked if he was done with the franchise after “The Dark Knight Rises.” “We’re very much excited about really finishing a trilogy and giving a conclusion to our story. And that’s what we’re doing.” Starring a large cast led by newly minted Oscar winner Christian Bale, “The Dark Knight Rises” is scheduled to open on July 20, 2012. Oscars Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

Join us at 6 p.m. tonight live from the Academy Awards red carpet on MTVNews.com. By Eric Ditzian Photo: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences All across La La Land in the hectic hours before the 83rd Academy Awards , nominees are putting the finishing touches on the scraps of paper containing their — fingers crossed! — acceptance speeches. Limo drivers are gassing up their rides. And somewhere inside the bowels of the Kodak Theatre, co-host James Franco (or, more likely, James Franco’s assistant) is shining his shoes. Meanwhile, you’re putting the finishing touches on your Oscar ballot or making sure your Oscar party doesn’t run out of Jesse Eisenburgers and King’s Peach Pie. Stressful! Soon, though, the action on Hollywood’s biggest night will be under way. What can you expect when the show goes live? MTV News has got you covered. Read on for everything you need to know about this year’s Academy Awards: The Live Coverage The first thing you need to know is that MTV News will be everywhere on Oscar night. To begin the evening, we’ll be launching a red-carpet live stream at MTVNews.com from 6 to 8 p.m. ET tonight, where we’ll be chatting up everyone from Natalie Portman to Christian Bale. And, of course, we’ll be churning out loads of video, analyses and breakout stories across all our Web properties, so keep it locked to MTV News for the very latest updates about the show. The Races All week long, we’ve been previewing the major Oscar categories. Best Supporting Actress might be the tightest of all the top races, with Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) grappling with Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”) and Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech”). Best Supporting Actor couldn’t present more of a contrast: Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) long ago locked up this win. Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”), too, is a sure bet to win Best Actor, while Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) should coast to Best Actress victory (though Annette Bening [“The Kids Are All Right”] could play the spoiler). When it comes to Best Director , Tom Hooper (“The King’s Speech”) is a slight favorite over David Fincher (“The Social Network”), but either of these gentlemen could walk away the victor. The same likely cannot be said about Best Picture: “King’s Speech” appears to have pulled away from “Social Network” and should end up the night’s big winner. The Rundown Deadline Hollywood has published the broad outline of the telecast, giving us a general idea of how things are going to go down. Franco and co-host Anne Hathaway will begin the evening with a pre-taped video in which they appear in scenes from the Best Picture nominees. Tom Hanks will be the first presenter, announcing both Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. Other presenters include Russell Brand, Sandra Bullock, Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Jackman, Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey. Hilary Swank and Kathryn Bigelow will present Best Director and then, just before the clock strikes 11:30 p.m. on the East Coast, Steven Spielberg will hand out Best Picture. So you think you have a good picture about what the Oscars are going to look like? Hopefully, but check out this TwitPic from Franco for what he simply calls “my view.” Will it be a regal evening for “The King’s Speech”? Can “The Social Network” dial up Oscar gold? ‘Black Swan,’ Natalie Portman Nab Independent Spirit Awards

James Franco wins Best Actor for ‘127 Hours.’ By Shawn Adler Natalie Portman at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images The day might have started out mildly overcast, but as the film community watched in anticipation, the Santa Monica beach quickly went from partly cloudy to completely black, as “Black Swan” swept the major honors on its way to dominating the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 26). A schizophrenic thriller about a ballerina’s inner demons made manifest, “Black Swan” danced away with four awards, winning Best Feature, Best Director for Darren Aronofsky, Best Actress for Natalie Portman and Best Cinematography for Matthew Libatique. The flick is nominated in the same four categories at Sunday’s Academy Awards. Among other winners, the rural drama “Winter’s Bone” nabbed two awards: Best Supporting Male for John Hawkes and Best Supporting Female for Dale Dickey. Presumptive Oscar Best Picture favorite “The King’s Speech,” meanwhile, won Best Foreign Film. James Franco, who played a man who literally had to give up an arm to be here today, finally got his due, winning Best Actor for his performance in Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours.” The 32-year-old, who is in nearly every moment of the film as the camera focuses on his character’s struggle to make a nearly unthinkable sacrifice, will be front and center as co-host of the Academy Awards. Other winners included “The Kids are All Right” for Best Screenplay, “Get Low” for Best First Feature and “Exit Through the Gift Shop” for Best Documentary. Thierry Guetta, aka “Mr. Brainwash,” accepted the award for “Exit” on behalf of the film’s reclusive director, Banksy. Hosted by Joel McHale, the show honored independent and original filmmaking throughout 2010, moving from last year’s venue, the downtown L.A. Live complex, back to the beach in Santa Monica. Will it be a regal evening for “The King’s Speech”? Can “The Social Network” dial up Oscar gold?
