Beats, Rhymes & Life Director Michael Rapaport Tells His Side of the Tribe Called Quest Story

Actor Michael Rapaport was such a passionate fan of hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest , it’s almost tragic what happened after he was granted permission to film the group, reunited after disbanding in 1998, for his directorial debut in the documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest . Having captured incredibly intimate footage of members Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, Jarobi White, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad — along with a veritable oral history of the ’90s-era Native Tongues hip-hop movement culled from musical luminaries of past and present — Rapaport found himself on the outs with A Tribe Called Quest just as his passion project was on the brink of a distribution deal.

Has Angelina Jolie’s ‘Cleopatra’ Found A Director In Paul Greengrass?

‘Bourne’ director is reportedly close to being signed for the movie. By Eric Ditzian Angelina Jolie in “Alexander” Photo: Warner Bros. For a hot minute, it appeared as though James Cameron would be switching up his directorial itinerary, sweeping into the world of ancient Egypt and helming the Angelina Jolie-starring “Cleopatra” before jetting back to Pandora for his “Avatar” sequels. Now it seems that Paul Greengrass — who, for a similarly hot, similarly short minute, was circling the director’s chair for the Cameron-produced “Fantastic Voyage” — will be taking on directing duties for “Cleopatra,” the 3-D adaptation of the current New York Times best-seller, “Cleopatra: A Life.” Deadline is reporting that producer Scott Rudin has said “we’re pretty close” to signing a director for the project and that sources tell the website filmmakers “like the idea” of Greengrass for the gig. Jolie, though, hasn’t yet discussed the possibility of Greengrass, who left the “Bourne” franchise late in 2009. “I hope to one day [play her], but we don’t have it all together,” Jolie told MTV last month about the film. “All the pieces are not together.” Sony is said to be eyeing a production start in 2011 and readily acknowledges that the budget will be massive. Rudin described the script, which has been penned by Brian Helgeland (who also wrote the “Green Zone,” which Greengrass directed) and is based on Stacy Schiff’s biography, as presenting “a completely revisionist Cleopatra, a much more grown-up, sophisticated version.” “She’s not a sex kitten, she’s a politician, strategist, warrior,” he went on to explain. “In the Joseph Mankiewicz movie, Elizabeth Taylor is a seductress, but the histories of Cleopatra have been written by men. This is the first to be written by a woman. It felt like such a blow-the-doors-off-the-hinges idea of how to tell it, impossible to resist.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Little Fockers’ Director On Sequel

‘It’s funny because the end has kind of a setup for a sequel,’ Paul Weitz says. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Ben Stiller in “Little Fockers” Photo: Universal Studios/DW Studios As the “Fockers” franchise has been wont to do throughout its 10-year run, the third installment in the highly successful franchise, “Little Fockers,” brought in major box-office dollars once again during its opening weekend. This more than proves that it doesn’t matter that audiences had to wait six years between “Meet the Fockers” and the latest film: They like to see Robert DeNiro get silly with Ben Stiller. And Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand, for that matter. Given the success of “Little Fockers,” the next question on inquiring minds is, “When are they shooting a sequel?” When we caught up with director Paul Weitz recently during the press tour for “Fockers,” we asked him what talk he’d heard about a potential fourth film. “There’s been none with me,” Weitz said, indicating that this directorial romp with the “Fockers” will be his one and only. “I would be the first in line to buy a ticket [to the fourth film],” he said. But even though it sounds like Weitz won’t be involved in moving the Fockers forward, he had a pretty good idea of why people think there might be one planned. “It’s funny because the end has kind of a setup for a sequel [minor spoiler alert ahead!], where they say ‘We’re buying the house two doors down’ ” Weitz said. “Which was really a last-second thought by [screenwriter] John Hamburg. It wasn’t sort of a calculated ‘Alright, what’s the sequel going to be,’ ” he explained. “But it does seem like a good setup for a sequel!” Would you like to see another “Fockers” film? I Love You Phillip Morris’ New Likely Release Date: Never

I remember January 15, 2009, like it was yesterday — the first day of the Sundance Film Festival, where filmmakers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa had just checked in at fest headquarters and seated themselves in the industry lounge for a morning snack. They had brought with them their directorial debut and arguably Sundance’s biggest bidding-war candidate, I Love You Phillip Morris . I watched them field one phone call, then another, then depart almost as quickly as they arrived, thinking the filmmakers were at the hectic beginning of everyone’s festival dream. Instead, as a new court ruling suggests, it was the first day of their worst nightmare.

Jackson Rathbone Says Making ‘Breaking Dawn’ Will Be ‘Amazing Experience’

‘I find myself working with people I’ve dreamed of working with,’ actor says of director Bill Condon. By Kara Warner Jackson Rathbone Photo: MTV News “Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone can’t believe his luck: Not only is he part of a hugely popular franchise, but he’s been able to work with some of his favorite directors. When MTV caught up with Rathbone, who is in two big summer movies — “Eclipse” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender” — he revealed he can’t wait to start work on “Breaking Dawn” with Oscar-winner Bill Condon at the helm. “I have not yet had a chance to meet Bill Condon, but I think it’s going to be an amazing experience to work with an Academy Award-winning director of his caliber,” he said. “Getting to work with these incredible directors that I’ve admired, ever since filming “The Last Airbender” with M. Night, even the first “Twilight” with Catherine Hardwicke. I really loved her directorial debut, [which] I think was ‘Thirteen.’ I thought that was incredible, and she co-wrote it with Nikki Reed, who’s a good friend of mine now.” Rathbone said he’s still trying to wrap his mind around it all and just wants to bask in the glow. “I find myself working with people I’ve dreamed of working with. It’s an amazing position to be in,” he said. “It’s a privilege, not a right. … I’m basking in it, loving it, because as an artist, you get those moments, you live ’em up.” As for “Breaking Dawn,” the musician/actor said he knows just as much as we do. Which is not a lot. “They’re keeping ‘Breaking Dawn’ under wraps,” he said. We’re all waiting on a script right now. It’s all up in the air — we don’t even know when we’re going to film.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “The Last Airbender.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Megan Fox Opens Up About Michael Bay, ‘Transformers’ In 2009 Interview

‘You get addicted to the Bay-hem,’ Fox tells MTV News of shooting blockbusters vs. ‘quieter’ films. By Eric Ditzian Megan Fox Photo: MTV News Depending on whom you believe, either “Transformers 3” filmmakers dropped Megan Fox from the upcoming film or the actress up and quit the production of her own accord. What is clear is that Fox and director Michael Bay have long formed an uneasy creative partnership. “Working with Michael Bay is not about an acting experience,” Fox once said. Bay didn’t let such statements fly by without a response: “Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in ‘Transformers.’ ” Before their working relationship fell apart — last summer, when “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” had torn up the box office and Fox was busy promoting her horror flick “Jennifer’s Body” — the actress spoke openly with MTV News about working with Bay. She spoke about his directorial style, doing stunt work and her confidence as a professional. For the first time, here is Megan Fox, in her own words, on all these things and more. On Making Big-Budget Blockbusters “You get addicted to those big action movies. You get addicted to the Bay-hem. You step away from it, and you’re relieved and you’re relaxed and you do something that’s quieter and you feel like you’re really working on it and you’re fleshing out and figuring things out. But then you sort of miss that abuse.” On Bay as a Director “[‘Jennifer’s Body’] wasn’t so fast-paced and it wasn’t so constantly chaotic [as ‘Transformers’]. … Continuity is a big part of film. Things need to match from previous scenes, because you shoot everything out of order. ‘Transformers,’ there’s no continuity in that movie at all.” On What’s Surprising About Bay “He actually has a really good sense of humor. You’d never know that about him, but he’s really funny, so he could do a comedy if he wanted to.” On Doing Stunts “I love physical stuff. That makes the acting part easier for me. If you’re throwing someone around or getting thrown around, or if you’re efforting that much or hurting yourself, you don’t have to feign the process. I enjoy that.” On Her Behavior During a Movie Shoot “I never cause problems on set. I become like a vampire, and I hide in my hotel room.” On Confidence and Failure “It’s easy to be confident when you’ve never failed before. Then you try something and you’re not good at it, or you fail or you suck or people have something sh–ty to say, and then you are a little less secure. Or at least that’s how it works with me. I think that’s how it works with most people in this industry.” On Her Hopes for the Future “I have aspirations to keep working and keep improving. I don’t have a specific type of movie that I want to do or a specific director I want to work with. I just want to keep working.” What do you think of Fox’s comments about Bay and the “Transformers” franchise? Let us know in the comments.
