As befits one of the contemporary stage and screen’s more intense, challenging actors, Ralph Fiennes didn’t make his directorial debut easy on himself. His adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus ( opening today in limited release ) studies the vicissitudes of political pride, corruption and revenge — an unflinching stare into a familiar powder keg that looks and feels increasingly like an abyss.
If you weren’t already jealous of Brad Pitt and his free (presumably) lifetime pass to Angelina Jolie naked, then you’re about to be. In a new interview with 60 Minutes about her directorial debut, The Land of Blood and Honey , the reporter asked Angie about her days as the ’90’s most skinfamous blood-drinking, model-banging, brother-kissing wild child: “I went through heavy darker times and I survived them. I didn’t die young, so I’m very lucky. There are other artists and people who didn’t survive certain things,” she said, alluding to something a notch above knife play (she once gleefully told reporters that she and Billy Bob Thornton kept a knife in their bedroom for vampiric kicks). Angelina declined to elaborate on what exactly put her life in danger back in the day, but she did say that the tiger hasn’t totally been tamed: “You think of those too many times where you came close to too many dangerous things, too many chances taken too far,” she mused. “I’m still a bad girl. I still have that side of me…It’s just in its place now…it belongs to Brad. Or…our adventures.” We probably shouldn’t be surprised- Angelina was dolled up in a dominatrix outfit when she bagged Brad on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), after all. She’s been called “the most beautiful woman in the world,” and has often been a magnet for controversy, but Angelina Jolie remains at the top of her craft. Restless in her role as a movie star, the 36-year-old has turned to directing with a film she wrote about the Bosnian War, In the Land of Blood and Honey . In a recent interview airing last night, Angelina spoke to 60 Minutes ‘ Bob Simon about her career, her family, and the “darker times” she’s put behind her: Angelina Jolie 60 Minutes Interview “I didn’t know it was going to be so sensitive,” she said of her directorial debut, which details a love story between a Muslim woman and a Serbian jailer. She also talks about her dream of being a funeral director (seriously), but the obligatory soundbite that will get the most people talking came a bit later. Discussing her many humanitarian efforts, she admitted that her “dark side” has not fully receded. It’s just dormant. “I’m still a bad girl,” the star says. “I still have that side of me. It’s just, it’s in its place now. It belongs to Brad. Or it belongs to our adventures.” Read into that however you like. Do you like Angelina Jolie?

The actress announced this week that she’ll be making her directorial debut next year with Summer Crossing , a coming-of-age tale set in 1940s New York and based on a novella by Breakfast at Tiffany’s author Truman Capote . No word yet on whether or not Scarlett will cast herself in the lead role…or talk herself into doing a nude scene. Scarlett’s far from the first sexy actress to step into the director’s chair- see more after the jump!
Variety reports that Scarlett Johansson will soon join the ranks of actresses-turned-directors with Summer Crossing , Truman Capote’s first novella, about a 17-year-old Manhattan socialite who breaks away from her family and has an affair with a working class parking lot attendant in the summer of 1945. The Avengers star had discussed her directorial debut previously this fall, but with backers and The Deer Hunter producer Barry Spikings it seems the project is actually happening. Yes, but will it measure up to Jen Aniston and Demi Moore ‘s cancer dramas ? Gauntlet dropped, ScarJo. [ Variety ]

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz in final negotiations to pen upcoming flick. By Kara Warner Tom Cruise in “Top Gun” Photo: Paramount Pictures Just about one year ago, Tony Scott sent his “Top Gun” fans into a frenzy over the news that a sequel is not only planned, but Scott will take the directorial reins on the project. There has been little forward movement since then, but now we have word that “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been hired to helm the script. According to Variety, Miller and Stentz are in final negotiations to get to work on the screenplay, with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison signed on to produce. The trade publication claimed that there are no plot details to reveal yet, but we’re hoping the “First Class” writing duo sticks with the outline Scott shared with us last year. “It’s not even a reinvention, it’s not even a sequel. It’s a re-thinking,” Scott said of his plans for the sequel. “What inspired me is that the world today is great, it’s so different from the world we touched originally. It’s really run by guys sitting in Nevada on computers playing war games.” Scott teased that the film will focus on the new generation of fighter pilots. “It’s a mixture of that, and it’s the end of the generation of fighter pilots. Not in a complete end to the generation, because these guys they go up in F-35s and they carry 10 drones with them. [But] it’s a very different movie,” he said. But the most pressing question on everyone’s minds is: Will Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer reprise their iconic roles? “I’m gonna withhold that information,” Scott told MTV News. “I can’t say anything. I’m talking with Jerry [Bruckheimer], and I’m going to withhold [those other details].” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
Unlikely duo will celebrate ‘Born Villain’ short film with book signing and screening Thursday in L.A. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Marilyn Manson, Narcissister and Shia LaBeouf attend the “Born Villain” screening in Los Angeles on August 29 Photo: Christopher Polk/Getty Images File this story under the most surprising of pairings: “Transformers” superstar Shia LaBeouf and Marilyn Manson have teamed up for Manson’s new music video, “Born Villain.” So how did these two artists come together? Well, they met at a Kills concert, where LaBeouf, a longtime Manson fan, casually approached the “Beautiful People” singer and struck up a conversation that sparked a genuine friendship. “Marilyn Manson to me is an indelible figure,” LaBeouf told MTV New, speaking exclusively about the collaboration for the first time. “He’s a big deal to me, and in my childhood, I don’t know of a scarier figure in art. He, in my teenage years, was the scariest thing in the world, so part of me has always been intrigued.” LaBeouf told Manson that he would love to direct his next video and showed him his previous work, Cage’s “Maniac” clip , as proof that he knows what he’s doing behind the camera. “I played ‘Maniac’ for [Manson], and he freaked the f— out,” LaBeouf recalled. “Manson goes crazy. Manson’s like, ‘I want you to do my video.’ ” The two then began prep work on “Born Villain,” which draws heavily from very intense, graphic imagery, specifically a famous French surrealist short film, Shakespeare and theology. “The song has all these references to ‘Macbeth’ and all this Shakespeare and heavy theology, so we tried to make Manson’s ‘Un Chien Andalou’ macabre ‘Macbeth’ — that’s sort of what that became.” To celebrate the LaBeouf-directed video, which is much more short film than standard clip, LaBeouf and Manson will be appearing together at a one-time-only book signing and screening Thursday at Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore in Los Angeles from 8 to 10 p.m. The 18-and-up event is private and limited to 150 attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to receive tickets, those who wish to attend must purchase the limited-edition “Born Villain” photo book at the Hennessey + Ingalls website , which also comes with a copy of the short film. Unsurprisingly, the imagery in the video is very graphic and very adult. Those who only know LaBeouf from his clean-cut film roles will likely be shocked by this directorial effort, but LaBeouf isn’t worried about those reactions. “This, for me, this is a really cool diversion for me when I’m not making a movie,” LaBeouf explained. “It gives me an opportunity to work with musicians I admire who I would otherwise never get to work with in any other capacity. I really have a fun time doing it. It allows me to be creative in another art form and work with heroes. “I also think there are fans of mine who aren’t fans of Manson’s and vice versa; that’s why I think our collaboration is interesting. I don’t really see it on paper,” he continued. “I don’t see fans of mine who went to see ‘Holes’ when they were 12 loving this. I don’t think my audience is the only thing I should exercise my artistic muscle for. I don’t necessarily always do things for the audience; this is one of those. “I love Marilyn,” LaBeouf said. “Manson is like a brother to me now. He’s a real sweet dude, a real close friend.” Related Artists Marilyn Manson
Twenty-two years have passed since Cameron Crowe made his directorial debut with Say Anything , the endearing romantic comedy starring John Cusack as a trench coat-clad kickboxer and Ione Skye as his valedictorian crush. To celebrate the ’80s classic, Crowe has released — for the very first time — the original extended opening scene to the movie, which as you recall, begins with Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler in his best friend’s (Lili Taylor) bedroom, discussing his future plans. Check out a glimpse of the script ahead.
