TAKE ACTION: Join With 350.org And Ask Obama to "Put Solar On It"

photo via 350.org By now, most people have heard this story. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the roof of the White House, but when the Reagan Revolution swept into power a few years later, Reagan famously had the panels taken down. Well, it’s a new day, and it’s high time for those panels to go back up. Solar power in the U.S. is rapidly growing, with 91 MW coming on line la… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The BP Spill and the State of Clean Energy Legislation (Video)

If at any point during your observation of this interminable oil crisis in the Gulf you’ve found yourself thinking, well, it looks like we should probably do something to start curbing our national dependence on this stuff, know that you’re not alone. And if, like me, you’re starting to get pretty ticked off that there seems to be absolutely no momentum building in Congress (or anywhere, really) behind policy that would do exactly that, then you may be scratching your head over why exactly that is. This seems like a perfect time to win political points by taking on Big Oil, right? Alas. This video from an MSNBC segment does a… Read the full story on TreeHugger

VIDEO: Watch Charlton Heston, Man of Leisure, Explain the ‘X’ Rating

It’s Friday! The drinks are flowing early at Movieline HQ East, where the discovery of a vintage Charlton Heston/MPAA ratings advisory on YouTube has left even the cleaning lady in a state of transfixed awe. It’s not just the corniness of it all; in fact, Heston’s earnest, ambassadorial zeal for explaining the G, PG, R and X ratings (this thing is at least 40 years old) yields a bittersweet taste of Hollywood’s Golden Era. Or that could just be the cheap gin. And God only knows who decided to shoot this on a tennis court. Soak it all in after the jump.

The Shelf Becomes The Box With System 1530

Sabine at Mocoloco shows an interesting bookcase system designed by Daniel Gafner of Postfossil . It is essentially made of plywood boxes held together by standard binder clips, which is clever enough. But when looked at in the framework of a more mobile flexible lifestyle, they become more interesting; the bookshelves can actually become a durable box in which you can move the contents. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bamboo Screens Shade Stunning French Passivhaus

One of the key elements of Passivhaus design has been the use of generous south-facing glazing for passive solar gain. That’s great in winter, but you can have too much of a good thing in summer. Some designers install trellises and bris de soleil to cut the summer sun, but Karawitz Architecture goes a step further with an exterior skin of bamboo screens, that can be opened and closed to adjust the amount of solar gain. They gorgeous, too…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Smart Grid Spending To Plateau at $35 Billion in 3 Years

Photo by zzzack The smart grid has been a lumbering but steady and inevitable presence in the utility industry, with a speedy uptake in the number of start-ups interested in creating everything from energy storage technology to user dashboards for home energy consumption and a somewhat slower uptake in the number of smart grid pilot projects popping up nationwide. Less than two years ago it was expected to grow to at least $65 billion by 2013 . Cisco has … Read the full story on TreeHugger

American Sea Otters Could Be Worth $700 Million in Carbon Credits

photo: Mike Baird via flickr Yes, really… An interesting presentation at the annual meeting for the Society of Conservation Biology explains how if sea otters were restored to historically high populations along the coasts of North America, the amount of carbon stored by their activities would be worth more than $700 million on the European carbon trading market. Air-Purifying Road Surface Eats 45% of NOx Pollution

Photo: Flickr , CC NOx, NOM NOM NOM Researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have tested pollution-eating concrete on about 1,000 square meters of roads in the town of Hengelo. We already knew it worked in the lab, but this was a real-world test and the results are pretty impressive: a 25 to 45% reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) over the special roads. This could mean that someday our roads and other concrete structures could be used to clean up the air. How does it work? Read on for the details…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
